What makes a generation great? For those born in the U.S. in the mid-1920s and early 1930s, it was a time of great depravation and sacrifice. And a time to band together not only for their own survival, but the survival of America. And in the end, this generation wound up taking America to new heights, forming the backbone of a country that went on to become the major superpower of the world. The term “The Greatest Generation” is credited to journalist Tom Brokaw, which he used to describe those who grew up during the tough times of the Great Depression then went on to live through World War II, whether fighting on the front lines or holding things down on the home front. He penned a book with the same title in 1998. Though The Greatest Generation officially began in 1901, with people who would have turned 18 after the end of the first world war, the term has become most identified with those born from 1914 on into the 1920s. Though World War II veterans certainly embody the essence of The Greatest Generation, there are other stories to be told as well. In 2009’s edition of Hometowns, The High Point Enterprise paid homage to veterans of all wars, including the handful of those remaining here who fought in Europe and the Pacific in the 1940s. This year, we take a broader focus and include others who lived through those monumental times, and how it shaped the rest of their lives, and America itself. There are strong bonds that were formed and still exist today among those who grew up in High Point in the 1930s and 1940s. The city boasted textile and furniture factories, but was still as much agrarian as it was industrial. Many residents, including factory workers, depended on vegetable gardens and raising chickens in order to feed their families. And when the Depression and war hit, they depended on each other. Though times were tough indeed, many of those interviewed for this publication
h o m e t o w n s remember those days as a time of togetherness, neighbors helping neighbors, a close-knit society that seems to have eroded with the passage of time. Tola Dellinger perhaps said it best. Though times were tough growing up, “there was a real deep feeling on all sides that you sort of felt that you were not fighting alone. We looked after each other.” Though she grew up in Virginia, it’s a sentiment that’s prevalent among those who grew up in High Point during those times. Ida Brannon, who was born and raised in High Point, growing up on Downing Street, says she feels blessed having lived through the experience. “We didn’t see it as difficult times,” she says, “because we never knew anything else.” That sense of coming together manifested itself with an unprecedented wave of patriotism and volunteerism. Young men quickly signed up to fight in World War II. Many of those who didn’t fight were engaged in activities here to support the effort, whether it be scrap metal drives or knitting socks for troops, a popular activity among many of the women interviewed for this publication. And all the while, they went without essentials during a time of food and materials rationing. Those times forged a sense of duty and purpose among many of that generation. They would go on to be active in local government, civic groups and other activities that gave back to their communities. As Brokaw mentions in his book, just take a look through an obituary section of a newspaper and find someone who lived during those times. You’ll likely read about service in World War II, followed by a lengthy list of civic group memberships and community activities all the way through retirement. Always involved, always lending a hand, tirelessly giving back. As time passes, there are fewer left who lived through those tough, pivotal years that helped shape modern-day America. Once numbering around 16 million, U.S. veterans of World War II are dying at the rate of more than 1,000 a day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. And that only includes those who served in the war. The number likely is quite higher when factoring in those who remained to help fight the war on the home front. Those who survived those times took with them, and in many cases, passed on, an unyielding work ethic and sense of patriotism and duty, traits that were essential in the rebuilding of an America that quickly became the leader of the free world. It’s a gift of immeasurable proportions left to those generations who came after them. Please join us in honoring those who gave us this gift, those whom we proudly call The Greatest Generation.

Newly married, he served as a commanding officer at the Army Air Force Base hospital in Topeka, Kansas during the early 1940’s. As he and his bride walked to work, they frequented a donut shop. During that time, his sister was in High Point making pulled butter mints to sell. In 1946 he returned to hometown, High Point. He had a burning desire to own his own business. His sister partnering with him, they decided to open a donut shop on English Road. The SWEET SHOPPE BAKERY name came from his sister’s husband. Knowing nothing about how to make donuts, he called his Topeka baker friend for some information.

Soon thousands of dozen donuts were delivered daily to furniture and hosiery factories that lined the streets of High Point. Sugar was rationed. He got all the sugar ration tickets he could. He drove to Raleigh to get sugar in an old beat up station wagon. The story was that the bottom of the wagon would drag on the way home due to the weight of the sugar. He attended bakery meetings all over the country while his sister managed the shop. He had a passion for the bakery industry. He held many positions in local and national organizations such as President of the Retail Bakers of America. The bakery continued to grow as he developed the tasty and popular formulas for butter cream icing, cakes, cookies, brownies, pies and more. His sister retired in the 70’s. In 1972 his son in law began to work at the bakery. In 1987 a grandson joined the staff. Fast forward to 2012: At 95 years old, 70 years of a wonderful, devoted marriage, he died. He left the bakery a legacy of 66 years hard work. We continue to follow in our founder’s footsteps. We will never forget the example made by them. Their’s was the best generation! Captain Chares R. Bradford, Jr., US Army Artillery was forced to surrender the remaining members of his Battalion at the Battle of the Bulge and spent time in six German prisoner of war camps; escaping three times only to be recaptured when too weak to swim a river. He later commanded a Company of over 100 Men and went with his men to Korea although offered the opportunity to resign his Charles Brad command and avoid Korea. His ford and his w ife, R uth, the night experience from the Battle of he returned to the states afte the Bulge led him to make good r his release decisions in similar circumstances and he was credited with saving the lives of his entire company. The State of Alabama recognized him with a memorial on the Square of Jackson County. After returning to Germany and retracing his path from the Bulge to the bridge where he surrendered and ultimately locating the Barracks where he spent most of his time as a POW, he was able Charles Brad to release his guilt and shame ford and his Grandson Ster recognizing the alternative would ba ling rracks where Bradford was have meant the death of his men POW and himself. He was then able to lecture to youth and adults and promoted service and love for our great country. Sergeant Aaron E. Smith was a tail gunner in the US Army Air Force. He was captured and tortured by Japanese when his bomber was shot down over the Philippines. He returned to the states with physical and later mental disabilities and died at a young age Aaron Smith in 1979. While not a hero in many Wings Pinnin g respects he remains a honored hero in the eyes of his son. He gave what he had for his country and fellow men.
