pletely replaced before power could be restored,” Walls said. “Once the storm system moved out of the area, then our folks came in and quickly restored the power.” Guil-Rand Fire Department Chief Brian Cox said that firefighters received a call at 2:35 p.m. Saturday which was related to the afternoon thunderstorm. Firefighters were summoned to assist when a tree fell on power lines. Cox said that high winds during the thunderstorm may have blown the tree over. “We don’t do anything with the power line itself,” Cox said. “We just secured the area until a representative from Duke Energy arrived.” Cox said that occasionally when the power goes out they receive calls from fire alarms which activate when the power comes back on.
BY DEBBIE HIGHTOWER Jason Walls, spokesperson for Duke Energy, said that 5,400 customers in the Archdale-Trinity area lost power. “There was a really, really intense storm system in the area, and one of our substations actually had a direct lightning strike,” Walls said. “The power went off about 2:30 p.m. and was restored at 9 p.m.” Technicians had to wait until the storm system moved out of the area before work could begin. “Seven spans of wire had to be com-

Generosity Hurley Hinshaw grows beautiful tomatoes — and gives them away every year. This year’s crop is now dwindling, but as of Friday he had given away 5,431 of the ‘Jack Crotts’ tomatoes from 202 plants. ‘I pray over my plants, that the Lord will bless my tomatoes, and I’ll give ’em away,’ Hurley said. He and his wife Lynda don’t can or save any, but they do enjoy a few fresh tomato sandwiches. They live in the Cedar Square area. Archdale’s pedestrian network updated S
lowly, but surely, the city of Archdale will become a walkable community. The latest Pedestrian Network Plan includes 34 miles of sidewalks and 13.5 miles of greenways.
BY ELIZABETH SAUNDERS The city updates its comprehensive plans every few years. The Street Network Plan was revised last year and the Future Land Use Plan in the spring. Jeff Wells, planning director, said the pedestrian plan needed to be revised to reflect those changes, as well as the N.C. 62 corridor access study and the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation commuter lot.
“A few years ago there was no PART lot. It was not even in the planning stage,” Wells said. The Future Land Use Plan update included mixed use zones near the PART lot, and the pedestrian plan adds sidewalks to the area. Some sidewalks will be built by developers as new neighborhoods are added. Others will be built by the city, either with grants or general funds. Near term projects include the Creekside loop trail around the disc golf course, a sidewalk along Balfour Drive using a Safe Routes to School grant and continued sidewalk construction along Main Street. Currently, Archdale has six miles of sidewalks and two and a half miles of greenway.
The Planning and Zoning Board recommended the latest pedestrian plan at their July 13 meeting. No one spoke at the public hearing. City Council will consider the plan at their next meeting, 7 p.m. July 27, at City Hall. The update adds eight miles of sidewalk and a half mile of greenway to the previous version. The proposed changes include the following: • Extend the Main Street sidewalk south into the extraterritorial jurisdiction. • Continue the proposed sidewalk on School Road to Trinity Road, to join with Trinity’s planned greenway. • Add sidewalks to the N.C. 62 and Interstate 85 interchange area, along connec-
tor streets proposed in the N.C. 62 Access Corridor study. • Add sidewalk on Aldridge Road to Rand Boulevard, to support the PART lot. • Add sidewalk on Goodman Street/ Luck Drive, to make another connection between Main Street and Archdale Road. • Add a Gregg Street/Lane Drive sidewalk, to connect Main Street with Archdale and Tom Hill roads. • Build greenway along a stream at Ashland Street, to connect Forest Hills and neighborhoods along N.C. 62. • Add a sidewalk in Creekside Park between the Senior Center and the Recreation Center. • Delete a planned sidewalk to connect Robin’s Nest with Archdale Road.

Tenn. in August to compete in the semifinal round of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest during Elvis Week 2010. Freeman often appears at the Barn Dinner Theatre. His career also includes two plays about the life of Elvis, which Freeman wrote, produced and performed. His band has opened for Charlie Daniels. Freeman has won additional awards, including the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, presented by Elvis Presley Enterprises at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. He was named by Elvis Presley Enterprises as one of the top 20 Elvis tribute artists in the world for 2009.
Trinity closer to completion of sewer system T
rinity has nearly wrapped up the Pike Street sewer improvement project, and Phase 3 of the city’s planned sewer construction will be complete by the end of the summer. The city also will complete another sewer project, and begin three more, by the end of this year. BY ROBYN HANKINS The Pike Street project, financed with a Community Block Development Grant, was completed in May. Accord-
ing to City Manager Ann Bailie, all of the homes eligible for hook-up assistance have been connected to the system. “The majority of people who are grant eligible are connected,” Bailie said. “Only a few remain unconnected.” Sewer Phase 3, she continued, will be done by the end of the summer. “Phase 3 has two contracts, one that will be done within a week or so and another that will be complete within 60 days,” she told the NEWS last Friday. Phase 3, which includes the Lakewood and Jerry Street areas, also includes two pump stations. There are currently 650 customers connected to Trinity’s
sewer system. Phase 3 and the Pike Street project will add approximately 300 more residences to the sewer system. The completion of Phase 3 marks a turning point for Trinity. In 2007, City Council agreed that the existing phases needed revision. In 2008, they decided to divide Phase 3 because they could save time and money by starting construction on two of the phase’s three parts that were already primed for it. SEE SEWER ON PAGE 4

Homeschool session set at the library The Archdale Public Library will present a panel discussion on homeschooling by Lynne Richardson and Shari Hunt at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27. Both have graduated four students over the past few years. Come with any questions and to share your own experiences with others, said branch librarian George Taylor. The event will debut the library’s new homeschooling book collection that includes information on the basics of homeschooling — how to help with math and grammar; and what is taught at each grade level. Over the next few years, the library will add to the collection as needed. “Over the years, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of parents that are coming to the library looking for help with homeschooling, said Taylor.

City Council will consider the permit at their July 27 meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The metal building, about 8,500 square feet, would have a brick and glass front and 73 parking spaces. It will add zero value to the tax base and create approximately two jobs. A technical review committee met with a representative of Mark Terry & Associates on June 10 and approved the site plan with minor changes. Highway Patrol continues investigation of I-85 wreck
T
he N.C. Highway Patrol is still investigating a July 10 wreck on Interstate 85, which involved six vehicles, including a Fed-Ex vehicle towing three tractors. The accident occurred near Finch Farm Road and closed left lanes in both directions for two hours. DEBBIE HIGHTOWER According to the Highway Patrol report, at 1:12 p.m. John Cable of Trinity was traveling northbound on I-85 in a 1996 Ford pickup while pulling a utility trailer.
Troopers said Cable’s vehicle was exceeding a safe speed while towing a trailer. Cable’s vehicle swerved out of control into the path of a northbound 1999 International tractor. The International tractor, which was towing three tractors, was driven by Gary Hoffman of Nebraska. The International struck Cable’s Ford. A third northbound vehicle, a 2009 Toyota driven by Melanie Taylor of Georgia, swerved to miss the accident. Her vehicle landed in the median and struck the median cables. Taylor and her four passengers were not injured.

When the power came on, an exploding light on a power pole at Ashland Street Baptist Church caused a transformer to explode. The Guil-Rand Fire Department secured the scene as Duke Energy technicians made repairs. According to the church, no damage, other than the light on the pole, resulted. A storm July 16 resulted in 22 customers in
Randolph County without power. A storm July 14 resulted in a couple of thousand customers without power. In the July 16 storm, close to 8,000 High Point utility customers, most of them in the northern and northwest area of High Point, were without power. Some High Point residents reported downed trees.
Hoffman, Cable and Cable’s passenger, Carol Cable, were transported by Randolph County Emergency Medical Services to High Point Regional Hospital to be treated for injuries. Estimated damages to the vehicles were $45,000 to the International and the other tractors, $8,000 to the Ford, $2,500 to the Toyota and $1,375 in damages to the median guard rail. Two lanes of I-85 were closed from 1:47 to 3:47 p.m. while the injured were transported and all the vehicles could be towed. According to the Highway Patrol, charges are pending.

This decision transferred the Woodacres subdivision, originally part of Phase 3, to Phase 4A. In 2009, it became the Phase 4A stimulus project after the city received funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Construction is expected to be complete in October. The change also will allow the city to use gravity sewer for Phases 4A and 4B, eliminating the need for a pump station in those areas. “Instead of installing a pump station and pressurized line, we’re using gravity line to connect more homes to sewer,” said Randy McNeill, vice president of the engineering firm Davis-Martin-Powell & Associates. This way, he continued, the city can connect more homes to the sewer system for the same amount of money. Construction on the remaining two contracts of Phase 4A and the Phase 4B Old Town project, which includes N.C. 62 from the city limits to Hopewell Church Road, is ex-
pected to begin in September. “We’re already sending letters about starting no-interest tap fee payments to the residents in contract 2 of Phase 4A,” Bailie said. Construction on the sewer extension for Trinity Furniture is scheduled to begin in December. Construction on the remainder of Phase 4B is set to begin in March 2011. Rural Center grants and loans are helping to finance Phases 4A and 4B. Bailie said that rising costs for materials will require the city to seek other sources of funding to finance Phase 5, and Council will have to approve a revised schedule. Potential sources include Rural Development Office loans, federal earmark grants, state bond grants and Community Development Block Grants. Current projections estimate that Trinity will have more than 3,000 sewer customers and a self-supporting municipal sewer system by 2025.

here is something inherently pleasant in learning new things. Even if we aren’t likely to ever use that piece of trivia, it’s still interesting. Indeed, our brains seem to be designed to learn new things. With a hundred billion brain cells, and about fifteen thousand connections (or synapses) per brain cell, we have, on average, about 1.5 quadrillion connections in our brain. In infants, there is a rapid increase in synapses until roughly the age of four, when children actually have more connections than adults. This is no doubt why children are such fast learners. The bad news is that the unused connections in our brains get pruned away after age 20, reaching the adult numbers around the age of 16. The good news is that even well into our eighties and nineties we can continue to learn and make new connections. We’re not going to learn a second language as fast as a 3-year old, but we can still learn. Michelangelo is said to have remarked when he was 87 that he was still learning. There’s no reason to ever stop learning, and a hundred billion reasons to keep learning, to keep those neurons firing.

... about the Supreme Court’s ruling on gun control
he Supreme Court in a groundbreaking decision June 28 ruled that Americans have the right to own a gun for self-defense regardless of where they live. A majority of the justices ruled for the plantiffs who challenged a handgun ban implemented by the city of Chicago. Sen. Jerry Tillman let his opinion be known in his electronic newsletter. “It’s good to know that our constitution still means something, but a 5-4 ruling shows the importance of strict constitutional justices bound by law and not by social values,” he wrote. The NEWS polled area folks to ask their opinions about the ruling.
Doris Hicks C.E. Hardin ‘I’m glad that they ruled that we can own and bear arms. I think that they ought to teach gun safety in the schools. The only dangerous weapon is one that is unloaded.’
Lloyd Stone ‘I’m glad they overturned it and we get to keep our weapons. We do have the right to bear arms.’
‘The Constitution is for the people. We need the Constitution, we need the Bible and we need our laws. I am glad they upheld it. Our Constitution is the only thing that is there to protect us.’
Rev. Barney Pierce ‘I believe in the right to have a gun in the home, but I’m not for carrying them around.’
Frank Gibson ‘I think you should be able to own one to protect yourself and your family if someone should break in and threaten to do harm.’
Thank you The NEWS thanks those who appear on this page for their willingness to express their opinions on gun control and the use of cell phones while driving. Those pictured were at Archdale Senior Center, Biscuitville, or Archdale Ammo and Arms.
Cell phone use while driving? Risky stuff A
proposal to provide incentives to states for enacting laws against talking on cell phones is gaining momentum in Congressional committees and some residents say they would support such a law. The NEWS polled area residents. In a man-on-the-street interview, the NEWS asked local folks about banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving and about banning all drivers 18 and under from cell phone use while driving. Here are their responses:
Lamont Davis ‘As a former volunteer for Guil-Rand Fire Department, I saw wrecks. I saw one where a kid was texting while driving and ran into an Archdale Police patrol car. I work in the tech support department at AT&T, and we really push no texting while driving.’
Bernie Miller ‘I see people all the time who are on the phone and pull out in front of you. They should give them a ticket just like when you don’t wear a seat belt.’ He is pictured with his twin grandsons, Ty Miller, left, and Matt Miller.
Pat Tabbon ‘They cause accidents. Drivers need to pay attention at all times.’
E
Doris Hicks ‘(A ban) would be a protection for the young people. It’s for their own good.’
Lewis and Linda Loflin Lewis: ‘They definitely should ban it. I was driving through here in the right lane, with a lady in a car in the lane beside me. She came over toward me, and sure enough, she was on the dang phone. It has to take something away from your driving ability.’ Linda: ‘I think it causes a lot of wrecks.’
William Green ‘I think (the ban) is a good idea. You don’t want Denise Benfield to use your cell phone while ‘I’m not really sure if driving. It’s nuts. It’s dan- age has anything to do with gerous. So many people are it. People are distracted rekilled and maimed by it.’ gardless of their age.’
Hinsons earn Archdale’s Green Thumb Award lbert and Ruth Hinson searched for four years for the perfect corner lot for their dream garden. STAFF REPORTS
On a Sunday drive, they found their corner lot at 506 Rand Blvd. and spent the next 40 years cultivating the landscape into a beautiful property, which gained the July Green Thumb Award from Archdale’s Community Appearance Commission. Elbert has worked meticulously to improve the appearance of the entire yard. In fact, there’s no one place in the yard where a single picture can tell the whole story. The couple has flowers, shrubs and trees surrounding the home, in addition to a well endowed vegetable garden. Elbert grows several different varieties of tomatoes with great success. A greater reliance on watering than normal was necessary this year given the string of dry, hot summer days. But the vegetables keep coming and the flowers keep blooming. Elbert is particularly pleased with how his knockout roses have thrived since he saved them from a clearance sale in early spring. The shrubs and flowers throughout the yard do not come from a single source, but rather from here and there and everywhere. “Whenever I see a flower or plant I like, I get it,” said Elbert. Members of the Community Appearance Commission congratulate the Hinsons on an award well deserved. According to the Commission, the efforts of the Hinsons keep their neighborhood and community looking vibrant and lively.

Elbert and Ruth Hinson grow flowers and vegetables at their Rand Boulevard home. The Commission selects a yard of the month winner for each of Archdale’s four voting wards during their scheduled monthly meeting. From those four winners, a Green Thumb Award is chosen as the best looking yard of the month.
To nominate a yard for this award, call City Hall at 4347333 or e-mail zholden@archdale-nc.gov. The Commission has a vacant seat available. To serve on this board, contact Zeb Holden at the same number and address.
