a number of strong pieces in place to start the season but will have to also build in a few areas. Its defense, anchored by N.C. State commit Germaine Pratt at strong safety, is strong but is overall younger than in years past. The Bison’s offense returns a number of standout players but features new faces at both quarterback and running back, as well as kicker. So, the potential is certainly there to have another strong season, but it might take a while to click as they prepare for the rugged Piedmont Triad Conference.

HIGH POINT ― Despite losing some players at key positions and facing adjustments in filling those roles, High Point Central still has the potential to have a very good season. After going 9-3 overall and finishing second in the difficult Piedmont Triad 4A Conference, the Bison return 15 players who started last season ― including all-conference standouts Juwan Foggie (a UNC Charlotte commit) at receiver, Jarariel Simmons at defensive end, Josh Wilson at linebacker and Germaine Pratt (an N.C. State commit) at safety. “It’s always exciting to have a new group,” said coach Wayne Jones, whose coaching career at Central began in 1993. “We’re going to have some challenges with them, but it’s always nice to see what kind of group they’re going to grow into. So far, these guys have shown that we’ll have an opportunity to do well.” Perhaps the biggest questions will be at two of the most prominent offensive positions: quarterback and running back, following the graduations of Justin Johnson and Jon Ervin. Fortunately for

Central, juniors Jamiel Mack (quarterback) and Kavin Logan (running back) saw some time at their positions last year. So, although they’re young and haven’t had full-time experience, they do have some taste of what it’s like under the lights on Friday nights and now look to grow into their roles, aided by a number of experienced players who are looking to get back to the playoffs after falling in the ﬁrst round last year. “You always want to go back and look at what you did in previous years and try to improve upon it,” Jones said. “But at the same time, as a team, you’ve got to make your own history. You can’t live off what those guys have done in the past. You’ve got to be this year’s team. … “We’ve got some experienced players on the ﬁeld. So, we’re just looking to get those guys to jell as a unit. And as soon as they can do that, we’ll start playing with a fast tempo on offense and ― hopefully ― that can be a strength for us as a strong offensive unit this year.”

Pratt, a three-year starter and an N.C. State commit, is one of the elite defensive backs in the state, garnering attention on a number of preseason all-state teams. Going into his senior year, though, there’s still plenty for him to achieve. And in a conference like the PTC he’ll have the opportunity to put his ﬁnal stamp on an outstanding career. “He’s one of those kids who’s played football for a long time. He’s got good ball skills and a good football IQ. He’s one of those kids who loves to play the game. He knows what’s going to happen and what the responsibilities are of those around him. They’d been among area’s best teams but weren’t quite at the elite level yet. Eleven straight wins, a top-ﬁve state ranking and a PAC-6 title changed that. They were poised to reach the 2AA state semiﬁnals, but a stunning fourthquarter rally by Salisbury to win by one ended their hopes. That’s huge motivation for this year, with a number of top players returning.

HIGH POINT ― Nine months ago, T.W. Andrews players and coaches stood on the field at A.J. Simeon Stadium angry and disappointed in suffering the cruelest of losses, just two wins away from playing for a state championship. Now, after months of hard work and preparation, the Red Raiders return a number of standout performers who are hungry to make another state playoff push and compete for their ultimate goal of a state championship. “I’ve always said we want to win a state championship,” coach Rodney McKoy said. “That’s what everybody wants, and that’s not going to change for us. … It’s a matter of doing the right stuff over the course of a season so you’re playing well at the end. We’ve concentrated on being more consistent over the entire season.” Andrews (11-2 overall, PAC-6 2A champion at 5-0) was poised to reach its first regional in seven years. Salisbury, however, rallied from 21 points down in the fourth quarter to win by one point on a field goal with 4.6 seconds left. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Red Raiders, whose only other defeat came in week 1 to archrival High Point Central. But, despite the bitter memory, now it serves as an incentive for this year’s team and its goals. “We felt like we left a win on the table,” McKoy said. “So, it serves as a huge motiva-

tion for the entire school. The whole school wants to win. When the football program wins, everything goes well for the year. We set our goals high, and we want to make it back and this time win it ― and win a state championship.” Andrews returns 13 starters, including players like PAC-6 Offensive Co-Player of the Year Marquell Cartwright at fullback (who ran for over 1,800 yards) and all-conference quarterback Lamar Raynard (who threw for over 1,800 yards). All-conference defensive back Jo Jo White also returns, anchoring a defense that features defensive back Dre Thommasson and all-conference linebacker Mark Love, while all-conference running back Rontei Wilkes will also be key. “We’ve gotten progressively better (over the years), but just last year you started to see the fruit of the labor,” McKoy said. “I thought we planted the right seeds about four years ago, and sometimes in football it takes four years to get the crop where you can harvest it. “And I think we’re at the point now where we can harvest all the things we think the school deserves and our kids deserve. Nobody’s going to give us anything, so we have to get out here and show we can work for everything we want to have for this season.”

the last several years has struggled. A one-win season last year was a particularly disappointing ﬁnish. But, with new head coach Eric Rainey, they’re looking to change that. They know it won’t happen overnight. But they are working to build a solid foundation with a number of talented athletes, vie for a .500 ﬁnish and continue improving as they seek to turn around the program.

ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER HIGH POINT ― After two disappointing seasons in a row, Southwest Guilford is looking to start fresh with first-year coach Eric Rainey and right away begin instilling what it takes to be a successful program. “We’re extremely excited,” Rainey said. “We’re fortunate (former coach) Scott Schwarzer left us with something that’s kind of the acronym for the new Southwest ― BANDITS: Believe And Never Doubt In This Southwest. “So, you’ll see it, and the kids have embraced it and they believe that things are changing. It’s about consistency. The level of intensity is there. So, right now, it’s maintaining that intensity and then turning it up once the season gets here.” The Cowboys return 11 starters, but they know the progress they expect won’t just magically happen. They will simplify what they run, work relentlessly to run it well and steadily build their confidence as a program. “We’re fast, so we’re going to play fast and try to create some mismatches and use our speed to our advantage,” Rainey said. “Our level of focus and our football intelligence is what we’re trying to work on so that we don’t have to coach up everything. We’re looking to have coaches on the field.

“It’s repetitions, repetitions, repetitions ― a lot of reps. It’s not a matter of putting in a whole bunch. Because we are simple, we’re able to do multiple reps, and it’s a lot of the same thing.” Southwest (1-10 overall, 0-6 Piedmont Triad 4A), which was also not allowed to participate in the 2011 playoffs after surpassing the limit for ejections, has a number of talented athletes who could help turn things around. Seniors Rick Mack (receiver/safety), Justin Hensley (receiver/safety), Landon Cheviron (kicker) and Ethan Hill (lineman), as well as junior Eric Cunningham (quarterback) and sophomore Jeremiah Brown (receiver) will ﬁll key roles. “You look at last season and we only won one game. So, anything above .500 would be successful from the outside looking in,” said Rainey, who will run a spread offense and 30 defense. “The No. 1 goal is to put a better product on the ﬁeld. “So when people come and see Southwest football, they’ll say: That’s a fundamentally sound team and a disciplined team. If we can be paid those two compliments, that’s satisfying. Ultimately, though, we want to win.”

Mack, a senior transfer from High Point Christian Academy, where he performed well in both football and basketball, gives the Cowboys a big dose of speed and athleticism. Although he might face an adjustment period, he very well may catch offguard teams unfamiliar with him and end up being one of the area’s better receivers by season’s end. “He’s explosive. So, after reaching the playoffs for the first time last year, HPCA certainly has the potential this year to reach its goal of hosting a playoff game for the first time and, in turn, win its first playoff game.

Cougars hope success blooms this season ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER HIGH POINT ― On the ﬁrst day of practice, High Point Christian Academy coach Steve Lechner was out buying ﬂowers for his wife when the lady at the store recognized him as the school’s football coach. Not long ago, hardly anyone knew much about the Cougars. Now, particularly after the success of last season, a lot more people do. That’s something, as a young program, they want to continue to build. But they also know there’s still work ahead. “We’re extremely excited,” said Lechner, who has been head coach since the program’s founding six years ago. “I speak for the whole coaching staff, the school and the administration and parents who’ve been involved. There’s a buzz about what we’re doing, and that’s a great thing. “The fact that that buzz is out there excites us. But, really, to be a successful team you’ve got to have the measurement within the group. We know what we’re capable of and when we hit the mark or miss it. I think these guys are not only excited but determined and with a purpose.” HPCA returns 14 starters from last year’s team that went 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the Central Piedmont Football Conference and

qualified for the state NCISAA playoffs for the first time in three years at the varsity level. The Cougars have a wealth of talent at the skill positions, including Geoffrey Wall, Nate DeGraffinraedt, Tristan Gilmore and Simeon Gatling at running back, David Norris at quarterback, and Malik Streater and Luke Lewallen at receiver. Add in players including Colby Gable, Aaron Gibson, Nate Alley, David Horton, Ridge Boykin and Langston Styles and HPCA has a solid mix of youth and experience across the board. “A successful year goes beyond just the football field,” Lechner said. “In football terms, we want these guys to be the absolute best version of themselves, meaning they’ve maximized what they’re capable of. I think this team’s capable of competing for a conference championship, being in the mix in the last couple weeks. “And the reward for that we hope will be a home playoff game as well. Things can happen, like injuries and things like that, but barring the unforeseeable that’s the measure of our success. Unless you win it all, success has to be getting one step closer. So, can we get one step closer?”

college programs) STORYLINE: The Bobcats return a number of players in key positions, giving them tremendous potential on both sides of the ball. But they lack experience on the offensive line. The goal early in the season is to play solidly as their less-experienced players learn their roles, gain conﬁdence and prepare to compete among the top teams in the very difﬁcult Piedmont Triad Conference.

ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER KERNERSVILLE ― The last couple years have been challenging for Glenn. It’s been close to being a very good football team, but, for whatever reason, it just didn’t happen. Now, the Bobcats look to simplify what they do, gain the conﬁdence to do those things well and compete with some of the best teams in the area ― particularly the ones in their own conference. “Every year our expectation is to win,” said Aldine Payne, entering his fourth season as head coach. “But the funny thing about that is you have to believe you can win. That’s the hardest thing. When I took over, we knew the ﬁrst couple years would be tough. “When you lose, the kids start to think about it. This team’s worked hard in the weight room ― it’s the strongest we’ve had ― and our expectation is to win by competition every day. To be successful, you’ve got to have competition. That’s where we still have to get to.” Glenn (3-7, 2-4 Piedmont Triad 4A last year) returns 15 starters ― seven on offense, eight

on defense ― including almost all skill positions, like senior running back Terrell Jones and junior quarterback Greg Keller. The offensive line is a bit inexperienced, Payne said. So the defense, highlighted by heavily recruited senior defensive end Yiannis Bowden, will be called upon to play well, particularly early in the season. If the Bobcats can push each other in practice and play well in their nonconference schedule ― which features just one home game through the ﬁrst six weeks ― then they look to compete against a tough PTC slate. “I really think we have a chance. But we can be good and be 0-for in our conference,” Payne said with a laugh. “... Every Friday night you’re playing someone who’s great. But that’s the way I want it. “I believe you make your breaks. All I want to do is compete every play, every day. And if we can do that, then we’re winners. If I see improvement on our team, then I’m happy.”

ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER TRINITY ― When a program has had as much turnover at head coach as Trinity has the last several years, it’s hard to maintain any success. After three coaches in three years, coach Clayton Trivett looks to turn that around. “It’s showing them I’m not going anywhere,” Trivett said. “I’m here to stay as long as they let me stay. As long as they see that consistency, then the kids will start turning around, and we’ll start getting more numbers and all that.” The Bulldogs (1-10 overall, 1-4 PAC 2A last year) return 13 starters ― six on offense, seven on defense ― and many have the experience and the size to help rebuild within the team’s new pistol offense and 3-3-5 defense. Junior running back D.J. Pratt will be featured prominently in the team’s offense, while junior receiver/linebacker Adam Johnson and seniors Tanner Addison (offensive/defensive lineman) and all-conference Jordan Johnson (defensive lineman) will also play key roles.

“I expect it to be, not a complete turnaround, but we should see a lot of improvement off the last couple years,” said Trivett, who was the offensive line coach last year. “That’s what I’m looking forward to. “The biggest thing is discipline. Getting rid of the little mistakes ― penalties, fumbles and that kind of stuff. The things that kill drives, basically, and get things rolling in the right direction.” Trinity’s schedule is also notably different. It has moved from playing a number of 3A schools to facing more comparable programs ― particularly three 1A teams to begin the year ― with the aim of building conﬁdence. “Right now, I want to start out of the gate with a win,” Trivett said. “That’s what I’m shooting for because that’s going to set the tone for the rest of our season. If we can get that one win early in the season, I think a lot of things will start turning around.”

By Michael Lindsay ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER TRINITY ― It’s clear to see what first-year coach Jason Bear Bradley wants out of his team. He wants intensity, and he wants to take Wheatmore to the next level as a program. The Warriors (5-7 overall, 2-3 PAC-6 2A) have done reasonably well over the last couple seasons, with two straight five-win seasons and playoff appearances. But, in their fifth year as a program, they want to achieve more. “Right now, we’ve come in and tried to set the tone over the summer,” said Bradley, who was defensive coordinator last year. “I think if you ask the kids, they’ll say there are major changes going on. We got a lot more disciplined. Our kids are enthusiastic, they’re flying around, and they’re doing a great job communicating with each other. “Our defense (3-3-5) will stay the same, so we’ve been able to add to that. Our pistol offense is coming on quite well. It’s been a great learning time. Our kids have been enthusiastic, and that’s the biggest thing. From my perspective, it’s definitely a good thing to hear the kids say: There’s a new sheriff in town.” Wheatmore returns 13 starters and will prom-

inently feature Brayton Hardin, all-conference Hunter Sheets and Alex Kestner in the running game, as well as Bryan Robles at quarterback and Adam Peace on the offensive and defensive lines. And, while it is less seasoned, the offensive line has dedicated itself to working hard and improving, Bradley said. Once everything ― the offense; defense, which should be a strength; and special teams ― click, the Warriors look to compete in a challenging Piedmont Athletic Conference. “The biggest thing I tell our guys is that there’s not a gimme on our schedule,” Bradley said. “There’s no one we’re going to mark and say, ‘We can beat that team.’ Every week’s going to be a challenge for us and hard-fought. But I think, with our kids, our expectations are to build off what we’ve done. “Our goal is to go back to the playoffs. Our goal is to go to the second round. We want people to talk about Wheatmore. We want them to kind of say: ‘They’ve arrived; they’re not a push-over anymore.’ We’re trying to lose that attitude and that perception. Tigers expect success with new faces By Patrick Budd SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE JAMESTOWN ― Last season’s first-round exit from the state playoffs certainly wasn’t Ragsdale’s ideal ending to its season. Nor was finishing fourth in the Piedmont Triad Conference standings. Now entering his 16th season, coach Tommy Norwood has come to the point in his career where he, his coaches and his players expect conference championships and a winning program. “We’ve been here 15 years and won nine conference championships,” Norwood said looking at pictures on the wall of his office of all the title teams. “We expect to win the conference every year.” The Tigers return five starters on each side of the ball and are looking to build on its seven-win 2012 season. But they have lost key players, such as 1,000-yard passer Colson Herndon and Division I signees Duncan Sparks and Winston Craig. In total, Ragsdale put seven players on the all-conference team last season ― all of whom graduated. Still, though, Norwood is optimistic about the young, new faces. “I don’t think we really rebuild here. I think rather we’re regrouping,” Norwood said. “We’re inexperienced, yeah, but we’re fast and have guys that are willing to step up.” Replacing the quarterback position seems to be the biggest challenge so far for the Tigers.

Juniors Mike Hukill and Alec Cobb are competing for the starting spot, in which Norwood sees as wide-open. Whoever wins the quarterback position, he will have a nice target on the outside in T.J Parker. Parker, a junior wide receiver, finished with more than 300 yards receiving last season and two touchdowns. Defensively, Ragsdale expects to beat opponents with its speed. Two cornerbacks and two lineman return to a defense that recorded 29 sacks last season. “We expect to be great on defense,” Norwood said. Junior linebacker Bryce Walker, who saw significant playing time a season ago, has been a standout in practice thus far for the Tigers and is expected to be a key contributor to a young group of linebackers. Overall, Ragsdale faces many challenges, including its nonconference schedule. Four of its six out-of-conference games this season feature teams that had above .500 records last season. The Piedmont Triad 4A Conference also won’t be a walk in the park for Ragsdale, which finished fourth after tying East Forsyth and Northwest Guilford for the title in 2011. The three of them, plus High Point Central, are perennial contenders, and Norwood expects the same this year. “We’ve got to play well, we’ve got to reach our full potential. I want to see us be physically and mentally tough week in and week out, and that would be a success,” Norwood said.

PLAYER TO WATCH As a sophomore last season, Walker ﬁnished the season as one of the top linebackers for the Tigers. He recorded over 70 total tackles, one sack and one interception. He provides the Ragsdale defense with some experience, speed and leadership. Expect Walker to even play a little offense at the fullback position. “He’s only a junior, but has become one of the biggest leaders of this football team. STORYLINE: After being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round last season by Monroe, the Villains look to build on their five wins. The core of its offense and defense is returning, but many holes are needed to be filled. Last season’s starting JV quarterback Andrew Rowley has won the starting quarterback job and will be supported by all-conference running back Joe McNamara and last season’s leading rusher Greg Salomon.

Familiarity breeds optimism for Villains By Patrick Budd SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE KERNERSVILLE ― Ten years have gone by for Charlie Jones as Bishop McGuinness’ head coach, and he’s seen a lot of players come and go through his program. But assessing his team this season, he sees a unique characteristic trait that most teams may not possess: camaraderie. “Many of these guys have been around each other since grade school, even kindergarten,” Jones said. “They trust one another and that really makes a difference on the playing ﬁeld.”

Seven starters return on offense and seven on defense for the Villains, as they look to build on last season, in which they won five games and exited the state playoffs in the first round. They return a core group of starters and expect to be a legitimate threat in the Northwest 1A Conference. “Last season we had quite a few games where we are almost there,” Jones said. “Taking teams to overtime or down to the last minute. I think this year, it’s going to take a little extra to get over that bump.” A big part of determining Bishop’s success this season will be the guys in the backfield: Joe McNamara (all-conference last year) and Greg Salomon. The two carried much of the offense last season and return to

training camp ready to go. “We’re returning out leading rusher and scorer from last year, and that’s huge,” Jones said. The third fold of the offense is quarterback Andrew Rowley. Last year’s starting junior varsity quarterback won the starting spot over senior J.J Dunn, in a decision that was one of Jones’ hardest to make in his time at Bishop. “I’ve never seen a guy that has been that invested about football,” Jones said of his 2013 starting quarterback. Jones is conﬁdent in Rowley’s ability to be the ﬁeld general stems from watching him lead his junior varsity squad to a nine-win season in 2012.

Defensively, Jones is concerned about the size and secondary of his personnel – so much concerned that he moved his star linebacker Salomon, (who led the team in tackles) to safety. “We’re not very big up front and we have many holes to ﬁll in the secondary,” Jones said. “It’s a calculated risk to move Greg into our inexperienced secondary.” Bishop’s 5-7 record last season was an improvement from 2011, Jones said. But this season he sees his team needing a big win to keep the positive momentum going. “We got to win a big game,” Jones said. “That’s the difference between .500 and 5-7.”

STORYLINE: Southern graduated 18 of its 22 starters last season and has many new faces and holes to ﬁll. Nathan Stoner will be under center for the Storm, a strong-armed quarterback that was a JV starter a season ago. But the buzz is around Reggie Gallaspy, all-conference running back who ran for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. With three-year starter and Southern Guilford all-time leading rusher Malik Moseley gone, Gallaspy is expected to carry a bulk of the offense.

New faces look to lead Storm By Patrick Budd SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE GREENSBORO ― On a steamy Saturday morning in August at Southern Guilford’s practice ﬁeld, it’s hard not to notice all the missing faces from a season ago. Following a magical season in which they won 11 games and reached the third round of the state playoffs, falling to eventual state champion Northern Guilford, the Storm return only four starters, with many holes to ﬁll on both sides of the ball. Perhaps the biggest hole is at running back, following the graduation of Malik

Moseley, who ran for over 2,500 yards and 36 touchdowns as a senior. But that’s not stopping coach Darryl Brown from eying another Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference championship, which they won outright last year and shared two years ago. “We aren’t really looking to replace him, but rather take our personnel we have and work with what we got,” said Brown, entering his ninth season as head coach after last year’s team tied the school record set in 1979 for wins in a season. One player who seems to have Southern Guilford fans buzzing ― and potentially could ﬁll Moseley’s shoes ― is junior running back Reggie Gallaspy. Last year, he

split reps with Moseley but still ran for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns, earning all-conference honors. “He’s a guy we’re really going to count on to really be a special player for us,” Brown said. “But we think we have a lot of other pieces to go with him that are going to make us a complete football team.” Expect Gallaspy to be taking handoffs from Nathan Stoner, a 6-foot, 2-inch junior quarterback who has been one of Brown’s most vocal leaders. Stoner, a JV starter last season, has a powerful arm that ﬁts well into Southern’s spread offense. “He really studies the game, always asking me for more stuff to read and study,”

Brown said. “But, just like many of the other guys we have out here, he’s inexperienced. But that’s not going to stop him from getting better each and every week.” Southern’s defense is expected to pick up the slack for the young offensive line, receivers and quarterback, Brown said. But even on that side of the ball, eight starters are missing. Brady Stover and Jamal Williams, both Division I college prospects, will be the senior leaders on defense. Stover (defensive tackle) was all-conference last season, while Williams will be the leader of the Storm’s secondary.

THOMASVILLE ― Taking over a program that last had a winning season in 2008, ﬁrstyear East Davidson coach Vance Hanner is determined to bring a change to his alma mater. “From the little league to the middle school to the band, we’ve got to have everyone working together, where before it seemed everything was separate,” said Hanner, who was an assistant under predecessor Bryan Lingerfelt and said he graduated from East in 1998. “But we know as coaches we have to win games. I’m not going to let the kids do less than their best. It helps that I went to school here and have those ties. “The thing I’m trying to do is ― when I was going to East Davidson, what would somebody have done for me to make it cool to play. Trying to establish a tradition and things like that is what we are trying to do. One tradition that we will try to establish is have at least 15 seniors every year. Last year, I think we had four, and other years it has been small. We’ve got to keep that leadership.” He’ll have it this year, with 12th-graders accounting for just over half of the 43 players on the varsity roster and contributing to a wealth of returning starters. “It’s a good time to be a coach at East, with the phenomenal senior class we have,” Hanner said.

Leading them on defense is all-conference linebacker Nathan Campbell, who had 170 tackles last season and will also carry the ball on offense at times. The defense will look different as the Golden Eagles go to a 4-2-5 alignment trying to stop spread offenses, which Hanner said he expects to be used by the majority of teams on the schedule. Other defensive leaders include lineman Cody Fowler, outside linebacker Tyler Rhodes and backs Lester Garcia and Drake Holbrook. Seniors also make up the entire offensive backﬁeld ― quarterback Austin Wallace, tailback Michael Ramos and fullback/tight end Bryce Bolen. Hanner said the Golden Eagles must be successful with a power running game while operating out of a no-huddle offense. “We’re going to be no-huddle and be uptempo to dictate the pace to the defense,” Hanner said. “You can be no-huddle and run it inside. You see a lot of no-huddle teams, but they are not power teams. We’re trying to be different. We’re going to try to be fast and physical. “We’ve got to embrace that we’re grinders. By Greer Smith ENTERPRISE SPORTS WRITER THOMASVILLE – Unlike last season, the Thomasville Bulldogs begin their 2013 campaign without anyone expected to be the main man. Gone is Gabe Brockett, who ran for more than 3,000 yards as the Bulldogs overcame a 0-6 start to go 4-1 in the Central Carolina Conference, finish 6-8 overall and reach the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs. “This year, we are planning on dividing that time,” assistant coach Dickie Cline said. “Hopefully, we’ll have the same results but it will be dispersed between different guys.” The load will be divided between Ike Marsh, Demoris Payne and Josh Scott. Marsh returns as the first-team quarterback but will also see time at tailback and wide receiver if sophomore Jalen Jenkins proves capable of running the offense. Payne, a senior who is playing for the first time, is expected to see time at tailback while sophomore Scott can play fullback, tailback and wide receiver. “We’re not going to make any bones about it that we’re going to run the ball,” Cline said. “But, we have to throw it better. When you get

to the playoffs, you can’t win it all if you can’t throw.” Cline sees Jenkins giving the Bulldogs another dimension as a passing option quarterback. “We have the personnel to do it as far as receivers,” Cline said. “The quarterbacks have to become more consistent. If they do, we’ll be able to mix it up more.” The biggest question comes along the offensive line, which will have Kharice Wilder as the only returning starter while Cline is unsure who will ﬁll one tackle slot. On defense, the most experience is in a secondary led by all-conference choice Akeem Davis and Tommy Davis. The line, featuring 6-3, 250-pound all-conference selection Zack Anderson, is the biggest in years according to Cline. And there is more depth as linebacker. “If you’re offensive and defensive line are competitive and consistent, you’ve always got a chance,” Cline said. “That may not be speaking for everybody but that’s what I think and (head) coach Brown echoes that. STORYLINE: The Panthers are excited about this season, following a season last year that was close to being excellent. This is coach Chris Adams’ fourth year, so the entire program is ﬁlled with players who’ve run his system their entire careers. Although it does lose some notable players, Ledford will feature several key players who have experience and who are looking to make an impact and help continue building the program with a successful season.

Panthers prepare to build on successes THOMASVILLE TIMES WALLBURG ― To hear Ledford coach Chris Adams and his players talk about the upcoming season, no one would guess this is a team coming off a losing season. Entering his fourth year with the Panthers, Adams is excited about his group that ﬁnished with a 5-7 record. He sees an upward trend emerging despite losing one more game last year than in 2011. “The difference between last year and the year before last is we lost four games by less than a touchdown,” Adams said. “If you ﬁnd a way to win two of those games, you have a seven-win season. It’s a pretty exciting time, especially with this senior group. This is the group we started with when they were in ninth grade. We’ve had them for four years, and we’re excited about how far they’ve come.” In order to improve on those successes, Ledford must replace the production of departed quarterback Duke Boger. In his place, senior Bubba White will give the team a more traditional

look in the passing game. Instead of using his feet to keep defenders off-balance, White relies on a superb arm to attack defenses. Joining him in the backﬁeld are Dalton Harris and George Melvin. Harris, a tailback, led the team in rushing last season after Melvin, the squad’s fullback, went down with a season-ending injury. Up front, Ledford believes it has the size and tenacity to move the chains. The Panthers also return more than half of their starters on defense, including an experienced linebacking corps led by senior Austin Stilley. Tyler Hall, Chaz Shields, Drue Canada, Chris Craven, Tavis Lindsay and Lupe Cervantes are among the upperclassmen who have logged playing time. “I think, this year, we have a lot of talent coming back, a bigger offensive line and the same coaching staff coming back,” White said. “We’re going to keep building and this year, we’ve got that core group of guys back who have really made our offense successful. Although he played in four or ﬁve varsity games last year, he becomes the starter this season following the graduation of three-year starter Duke Boger, whom White played behind last season after two years as the JV starter. “I like his competitiveness, and I like his leadership. He’s very intelligent in both football and school, and he understands the offense and what we’re trying to do.
