Spring season finally arrives S
now still covered shaded areas around Ragsdale’s baseball diamond, and the whipping wind sent thoughts of spring careening from one’s mind as fast as it scattered the dry leaves on the ground. DeSean Anderson proudly donned his uniform jersey, bare arms and all, and pronounced the weather just fine. Scout Albertson, meanwhile, attempted to keep her teeth from chattering out of her mouth. Plenty of days in the sun loom for the Ragsdale baseball and Trinity softball stars, year-round players who nonetheless couldn’t wait for their senior high school seasons to arrive. No matter the temperature on a frigid mid-February day when they were asked to pose for the cover of The High Point Enterprise’s Spring Sports Guide. “I’m really excited,” Albertson said. “During the summer, I don’t play with the girls I go to school with. It gives me a chance to play with people from where I’m from.” Anderson spends his fall racing up and down football fields, and other free moments wowing professional baseball scouts. Spring provides a chance to simply hang out with friends in those blue Tiger jerseys. “This spring season means a lot more because it’s my last year playing with (Billy) Stone, (Walt) Sparks, (Ben) Fultz,” Anderson said. “We’ve been playing together since we were 6 years old.” Plus, there’s a little something for Ragsdale to prove this season after a stunning first-round exit from the 2009 playoffs. “The new rankings came out and we’re not ranked,” Anderson said of the Tigers, who lost a number of top seniors from last year’s squad. “Everybody’s overlooking us. We’re ready to come out here and surprise
a lot of people.” Albertson, a third baseman and shortstop, leads Trinity into the new PAC-6 2A this spring. After turning down a number of scholarship offers, including SPORTS a full ride to Campbell, she’ll head to N.C. State Steve next year to play for the Hanf Wolfpack. ■■■ “State’s where my heart was set at. I just knew that was where I was supposed to go,” said Albertson, who will be a non-scholarship player her first year. “They needed a catcher, had to put money somewhere else my first year, but my next years I’ll have some scholarship money.” Albertson plans to major in Life Sciences, part of the pre-med program, and said she’s leaning toward medical school after her State career ends. Anderson has other choices to make after leading the Tigers through the treacherous Piedmont Triad 4A. Baseball won out over football a while ago, and now it’s top-notch South Carolina vs. the major league baseball draft, full ride vs. a nice signing bonus and fast track to the majors. He’s yet to make up his mind and likely won’t decide until July or August. “It’s been tiring, but it’s also been a privilege,” Anderson said of the process. “Not everybody has the opportunity where, if I don’t want to play pro ball out of high school, I can play college baseball at a high-level Division I team.” Clearly, good days are coming for these local prep stars. And warm days are coming for them and all the area’s athletes. shanf@hpe.com | 888-3526

Coach: Todd Farlow (first year with varsity), assistants Jeremy Cecil, Angelo Gonzalez and Cindy Cecil Last year in review: 9-5 overall, lost in first round of state playoffs to eventual champion Northside Christian; lost all-state recipients Bethany Gesell and Rebecca Leigh Key returners: Shortstop/third baseman Mychelle Gonzalez, outfielder Madison Kiser, catcher/pitcher Tatum Fogle, second/first baseman Macy Scarborough Key newcomers: Pitcher Cayla Cecil, shortstop/second baseman Lindsay Cecil, third baseman/outfielder Sarah Bridger, pitcher/outfielder Margo Cochran The coach says: “We will be very young, as we do not have a senior on the roster. We look forward to playing a very challenging schedule. Hopefully, we can say every day that we have gotten better. Our theme verse for the season is I Corinthians 12, which deals with everyone understanding her role for the betterment of the team. In the long term, it is our goal to win a state championship. That may or may not happen this year, but we are building a foundation with a young core group along with a balance of key veterans returning to produce the best product HPCA DON DAVIS JR. | HPE has to offer. I am excited about this season because of the effort that I see coming Top returning players this spring for High Point Christian Academy’s softball squad are from the girls already. It will be a challenge, yet one that we are willing to meet (from left) Madison Kiser, Tatum Fogle, Mychelle Gonzalez and Macy Scarborough. and defeat.”

Top talents back for the HPCA soccer team include (from left) Rebekah Severs, Mackenzie Allred, Meredith Morris, Hannah Steele and Tara Moseley. DON DAVIS JR. | HPE
Key newcomers: Freshmen Kenzie MacDonald and Brennen Moore The coach says: “This is going to be an exciting year for our team because we have a lot of strength returning as well as some strong newcomers. Last year we had a great season and are
hoping to build on what we accomplished. The Triad Athletic Conference always seems to be strong in girls soccer, so we have put together a strong schedule with the addition of some out-ofconference teams. We are looking forward to a great season with a great group of girls!”

Coach: Heather Foster (third year leading 3-year-old program), assistant Jeff Pack Last year in review: Boys – second in Triad Athletic Conference, sixth in state (highest ever), a majority of All-TAC and allstate athletes graduated; Girls – fourth in TAC, 12th in state with 11 girls. Key returners: Boys – junior Trent Gabriel – TAC champion, fifth in state in 800, strong in 400 and 800, distance relays; freshman Connor Flater – fourth in state in 3200, seventh in 1600, coming off superb cross country season, should place high at state meet; sophomore Davis Pack – 400/800 specialist coming off All-TAC XC season, should be one of the top 400 runners in the TAC and a key member of 1600 and 3200 relays; senior Jack Dula – versatile athlete who was fourth in state in the pole vault in first season competing, also has good speed and will help 800, 1600 relays; eighth-graders David Loy and Will Cliff – coming off great XC seasons, should be strong in 1600 and 3200; junior Kolton White – solid hurdler with good form, has improved his speed, should be one of the top hurdlers in the TAC, could place high at state; ninth-graders Ryan Rush and Caleb Beane and sophomores Jake McKinney and Zach Blackmore – counted on in the sprints and field events to offset losses to graduation; eighth-grader Shep Byles – looks promising in the 300 hurdles; Girls – sophomore Jordan Gibson – fourth in TAC in 100 hurdles, seventh in state, on sprint relays, hopes to do both hurdle events; sophomore Catherine Byles – second in TAC in 300, also strong at 200 and 400, and will compete in sprint relays; junior Claire Phipps – versatile athlete used in sprints, middle distance and high jump, injured last year for TAC
---
and state, will compete in four events this year depending on where the team needs her; sophomore Mary Katherine Field – provides speed and experience in the 200 and 400 as well as sprint relays, fourth in TAC last year in 400; freshman Catherine Phipps – looks to build on XC background in third year in track to improve her times in the distance events. Key newcomers: Boys – junior Matt Ardoin – promising in shot and discus; junior Reid Ashby and senior Jarod Saintsing – depth in the sprints and may compete in high jump; senior Austin Gentry, a six-year XC veteran who is a newcomer to track but has plenty of distance experience and is expected to contribute; Girls – sophomore Carly Black – strong in the sprints and possibly the long jump; sophomore Tess Allison – should help in distance events; seventh-graders Abby Auman and Jackie Love – XC runners who will help in middle distance. The coach says: For the boys, “After losing 75 percent of point production to graduation, HPCA looks to rebuild in the sprints and field events but has great experience in the middle distance and distance events. We should have the best middle distance and distance team in the conference, but will need to get some of our young sprinters contributing to the points to have a shot at the title. We have a good combination of talented veterans and newcomers to send the program in the right direction.” For the girls, “It’s a relatively young team with 13 on the roster. We hope to have strong seasons from the veterans in some specific events, but lack the depth and experience to field a successful, wellrounded team this year. Key newcomers with young veterans should plant the seeds for the next several years.”
Coach: David Spencer (eighth season) Last year in review: Runner-up in Triad Athletic Conference tournament Key returners: Junior Brian Segars, sophomores Tulley Dominguez and Steven Kowal, freshman Josh Craft Key newcomers: Aaron Quate, Brandon Bennett, Caleb Hardee, Zach Eanes
DON DAVIS JR. | HPE
Tulley Dominguez (left) and Josh Craft are part of a youth movement hoping to lead High Point Christian Academy’s golf team to a big season this year despite playing in a tough conference.
The coach says: “This season, we have no senior leadership with one junior, five sophomores and two freshman. Not only are we young, but we are inexperienced. Only three of our golfers have varsity match experience (Segers, Dominguez, and Craft), and three of the remaining four did not play at the middle school level. Playing in the TAC can be tough. There are usually several very talented teams that we will face. Last season, we finished runner-up in our conference tournament. We are going to have to grow up fast to keep pace this season.”

ship from their senior class in order to reach their goals. We have a very tough nonconference schedule to help prepare us for the TAC and state tournament. Pitching will be our key. If our pitchers pitch to their capabilities, all of them could have outstanding seasons.
Many of our players have worked very hard this offseason and I am anxious to see them play. We are a different team than last year’s championship team and we will need to find our team identity to have a successful season. The potential is here to have another great run.”

Coach: Adam Schwartz (10th year, fourth leading varsity) Last year in review: 13-5, Triad Athletic Conference champs, fourth in NCISAA 2A state tourney; All-TAC honors for Jonathan DiIanni (Player of the Year), Will DiIanni, Grey York and Andrew Bauer; the DiIanni brothers earned all-state status Key returners: Seniors Bauer, Will
DiIanni, Austin Greeson and Braeden Moore; junior Aaron Caffey; sophomores Jonathan DiIanni, York and Chris Anderson Key newcomers: Junior Logan Icenhour (returning from Ragsdale); seventh-grader Thomas Walsh The coach says: “This is one of the most anticipated golf seasons in our school’s history! Returning all
but one player (Stephen Kimsey, Hampden-Sydney) and adding Logan Icenhour and Thomas Walsh to the mix, every practice and match is going to be a competition. The sad part is only six of these great-student athletes will be able to play in the state championship. So, bringing a high level of play is important throughout the season. Coach: Mark Scott (third year) Last year in review: Boys – Won Triad Athletic Conference title and finished runner-up in the state championship each of the last two years; most of the team made all-conference each of the past two years; Girls – runner-up in TAC each of the last two years, fourth in state championship last year. Key returners: Senior Logan Yeager (state pole vault champ) and junior Jay Kennedy, who both demonstrated they can compete on the state level in a couple of field events and have potential to be state-caliber sprinters; senior Taylor Christiansen and junior Adam Goho, who handle the distance duties and 4x8 relay; freshman Will Thomas and eighth-grader Will Moore, who ended strong last year in the distance events and should fill 4x8 relay spots; sophomore Ben Bruggeworth (discus, pole vault); Girls – junior Whitley Glosson, freshman Claire Councill (former all-state runner) and freshmen Mary Bryan Smith, Hunter Hess and Emma Thomas; junior Molly Harris (placed in the 400 at state). Key newcomers: Boys – freshman C.J. Plummer (jumps) and senior “Z” Grier (throws) should help in field events; a versatile and healthy Will Holland returns after nearly a two-year absence due to injuries and could contribute in a variety of events and provide senior leadership; Girls – sophomore Mattie Strickland brings a combination of strength and speed that along with Glosson, Councill and Harris makes the team strong in middle distance; senior Elizabeth Coughlin could make an imme-
diate impact with her speed and senior leadership to help a talented but young sprint crew of returning freshmen Leigh Tyson, Olivia Greeson and Hess. The coach says: “WCDS is typically the smallest 2A school in the state and that makes it very difficult to compete on the state level in a sport that has 18 events for the boys and 17 for the girls. The success of the boys the past two years has been directly related to the fact that no less than six members of those teams could have competed and scored at the state level in almost any event, filling virtually any holes in the lineup. They simply needed one more such athlete with the talent and hard work ethic to win a title last year. Though we lost most of that group, our returning athletes have tasted the success and have seen what it takes to achieve it. Led by hard-working and talented seniors Taylor Christiansen and Logan Yeager, I believe they can help develop those around them enough to compete for a third straight conference championship.” The Wildcat girls will miss graduated star Becky Plyler, who won the state title in the long jump last year. “With all the middle-schoolers last year, we jokingly referred to her as the team mom. Those youngsters are now a year older and saw just how good they could be with the fourth-place finish at the state meet. They certainly have some fast shoes to fill. The Wildcat girls are fortunate to have such great and versatile athletes in Whitley Glosson, Mary Bryan Smith and Claire Councill that could each probably place in about 12 different events at the state meet. Coach: Cory Evans (sixth season) Last year in review: 6-10 record, Elizabeth Kennedy had 18 of the team’s 26 goals and was all-conference along with midfielder Abbey Pfister. Key returners: Senior midfielder Abbey Pfister (five goals, four assists), a smart player excited to take on the role as captain this
year, has started since eighthgrade, great on and off the ball and has a tremendous work ethic, will be asked to score more goals this year; senior defender Courtney Shannon, a co-captain and anchor of the defense, does a great job organizing the defense and gets involved in the attack, stepped up last year with a new keeper and injury-riddled defense to have a great season,
her leadership is irreplaceable; junior keeper Mary Ragan, last year was her first ever playing soccer, stepped in and did a tremendous job, still learning the ins and outs of the game but is very athletic and has great reflexes, had a save percentage of 75 percent; senior defender Amy Rowley, played a lot in the midfield last year, is great in the air on 50-50 balls and does
a lot of the little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet; sophomore defender Rachel Nulty and junior defender Jessica Grzyb, marking backs who have played a lot of soccer and know the game very well, smart and tough players who will be asked to play larger roles this season; junior forward Robyn Terrell, one of the focal players up front who will be asked to
pick up the scoring load from Kennedy, has a quick first step and uncanny ability to score in a crowd, had four goals and three assists last year; sophomore midfielder Alex Simpson and senior midfielder Sara Couch, first-year starters last year who progressed well, will play on the flanks along with Sarah Lindner

Coach: Amy Dillingham Last year in review: Second in Triad Athletic Conference; two players from that team lost to graduation, three to other schools and three to other sports. Key returners: Clayton Brewer, sophomore, played No. 1 last year; Luke Vandeplancke, sophomore, played Nos. 5 and 6; senior Chris Lewis, got time at No. 6 last year; and eighth-grader Chris Staton, a key player in the top six all last year. The coach says: “We hope to be competitive in our conference, of course, and I would like to get the lineup nailed down as soon as possible so the boys can just concentrate and work on their games to get ready for a quick start.”

(junior) and Carson Thorn (junior); Simpson scored four goals last year and is great possessing the ball on the outside. Key newcomers: Freshman midfielder Meghan Ingram, talented and hardworking, will start at defensive mid and bring energy and toughness; eighthgrade forward Avery Keefe, will start up front and some in the midfield, maybe the team’s most skilled player, a great athlete with potential to score a lot; freshmen Sarah Kate Christiansen (defender/midfielder), Kennedy Thompson (forward), Oby Nwamu (forward/defender) and Elizabeth Lawrence (keeper). The coach says: “Last year’s team was talented, but young. The players this
year have adjusted to new roles and improved their all-around game. While we lost most of our scoring, I feel confident several players will fill the void. Defensively we are strong. The key to this year’s success will be how much time we can possess the ball in our attacking third. Every year our goal is to play on the final weekend of the season, and this season is no different. We have a good mix of talent and experience – something that was missing last year. There are some really good teams in our conference, but the girls feel they can compete with some of the best in the state. They have worked extremely hard so far and have a great attitude. We’re looking forward to an exciting and successful season.”

The coach says: “This season is going to be an exciting one to see how our kids respond to the challenge and step up their level of play. We are still a young team, with the majority of our roster being sophomores and freshmen. However, I am looking forward to seeing the team’s progression as we continue to lay the foundation for success

Our team learned a lot last year, as we were able to persevere and learn from our experiences week to week. I am very excited about how the team is meshing so early in the season. Defensively, we have several players who can play each position, and that has created a lot of competition to see who the starters will be. With the addition of five new faces,
it has inspired a harder work ethic and focus during practice and I am looking for that to translate over to our games. Offensively, we have added depth in our lineup, top to bottom, and speed to go along with it. I am very proud of how hard they have worked, the fresh attitude they have and the level of intensity they are bringing to the field. Let’s have a great season this year, girls!”

Last year in review: Lost six seniors, including Wil Myers (K.C. Royals, 91st pick), Logan Self (Campbell), Clinton Ingram (Campbell) and Tyler Hickernell (GTCC); finished as PACIS cochampions and reached NCISAA 3A championship series, losing to Charlotte Christian one year after beating the same school for the 2008 title; 17-5 overall; five All-PACIS performers. Key returners: Senior second baseman Cameron Hendrix – shifting after being three-year starter at third, hit .377 last season, counted upon to be a big run producer, in tremendous condition and has developed a lot of strength; junior third baseman Casey Corn – shifting from second, where he started last year, hit .388 and had second-highest OBP at .492 (Myers, .663), will lead off, go deep in counts and also provide some power, has gotten stronger and quicker, also will be a rotational starter on the mound; junior catcher Chris Ferrante – starter since eighth grade at numerous positions, hit .361 last year, productive hitter also counted upon as a pitcher; senior right fielder Nathan Midkiff – starter since freshman year, has improved greatly and will be counted upon to provide offensive punch due to a revamped swing and approach, also will catch in cer-

Key newcomers: Junior pitcher/shortstop/ catcher Bennett Hixson – Ragsdale transfer, the ace of our staff, will hit in the middle of the lineup and be counted upon as a big RBI guy, can play anywhere on
the infield; sophomore first baseman/pitcher Nick Blackwood – Southern Guilford transfer, started as a freshman at third base, could be used there in key situations depending on who is on the mound, hits from the left side, very disciplined, has some pop and the ability to drive in runs; sophomore outfielder Kyle Washam – Southern transfer, started in center as a freshman, outstanding speed, will compete for a starting spot; sophomore outfielder Cameron George – up from JV, excellent athlete, good speed, will compete for time, if he hits could play a lot; sophomore pitcher Ethan Brown – full-time JV player who could see key varsity innings on the mound; junior infielders Greg Key and Vincent Banks – up from JV, will add depth.
The coach says: “We expect to be very competitive in conference play. Our conference is getting much more competitive, as Greensboro Day and Forsyth Country Day are putting a bigger emphasis on their baseball programs. We lost the biggest senior class in 2009 and are very, very young; however, we will always have high expectations. This team has the potential to be the most athletic and best defensive team we have had in many years. We have lost a tremendous amount of run production (30 homers, close to 200 runs scored in 22 games), but we should play much better defense. Our pitching staff will be very young and inexperienced, but will compete hard. We look forward to watching these kids grow and develop together.”
Key returners: Senior Michael Hunter has played between the No. 2 and 4 positions, senior Andrew Welborn has played between Nos. 4 and 6, and junior Jamie Canaday has played between the second and fourth spots
in the lineup. Canaday played a busy schedule of tournament golf in the offseason and has worked hard on his game. Sophomore Davis Womble, in his fourth season on the varsity, has continued to improve his game while growing at a tremendous pace. He won the Donald Ross Junior Championship at Pinehurst in December and has moved up the rankings on the national scene. The coach says: “Our goal is to make the effort necessary to improve throughout the season and hopefully make the state playoffs, which is a difficult challenge.”

throughout the order. The strengths of our ballclub will be defense up the middle, and we will be fundamentally sound. I feel like we will be very competitive in a very difficult conference. The Piedmont Triad 4A Conference consists of three conference champions from last year and all seven teams made the playoffs.”
Key returners: Senior Joel Shuford at No. 1 (9-3 singles, 10-2 doubles); junior Andrew Daniel at No. 3 (13-3 singles, 6-2 doubles); senior Christian Pfuhl at No. 5 (7-2 singles); junior Greg Funk at No. 6 (7-3 singles, 5-1 doubles); senior Kevin Lyons at No. 7 (1-2 singles, 10-2 doubles at No. 3); junior Andrew Everhart at No. 8 (5-0 singles); junior Stephen McDaniel at No. 9 (5-2 doubles); sophomore Stuart Michel at No. 10 (3-0 doubles). Key newcomers: Freshman Austin Lynk most likely will play in the top four this season – talented and extremely competitive, with a good pedigree
(brother Travis played No. 1 from 2005-07); freshman Danny Gillespie has a chance to make an impact in doubles; junior Gray DePasquale played golf last season and is coming off a broken ankle. He is trying to get back into the tennis groove after not having played for several years and could make an impact by midseason. The coach says: “We have a very good mix of experienced upperclassmen with some talented newcomers this season. Joel Shuford gives us a veteran at No. 1 and will help anchor our doubles with Andrew Daniel. Kevin Lyons has really stepped forward and is playing some excellent doubles. Greg Funk, Stephen McDaniel, Andrew Everhart and Stuart Michel are all talented doubles players and will be competing for playing time in singles and doubles. Moving into 4A presents new challenges and a much more competitive conference. We anticipate competing with Northwest Guilford and Ragsdale for the conference championship with High Point Central and East Forsyth nipping at our heels. Hopefully, our experience and challenging nonconference slate will help us to achieve success.”

ball; sophomore midfielder Samantha Henry – has shown a lot of improvement, could really take charge and help in the midfield by winning early balls and getting solid crosses in for finishes, a key player; sophomore attacker Claire Deese – probably team’s most athletic member, a threat up top with speed, agility and a great attacking mind, a big weapon. Key newcomers: Half the roster – the biggest surprise is the play, ability, maturity and overall outstanding skills of freshmen Maggie Clark, Kristen Edwards and Brooke Masi, who will play major roles in team’s success; two keepers will push each other for playing time in junior Kayla Krueger and sophomore Rebecca Mortenson; juniors Kristen Nanney and Gabbie Sinteral up from the JV will provide help; freshman Hannah Burnette will be a consistent player as the year progresses.
The coach says: “Our outlook is simple: Improve each and every day, be better today than what we were yesterday. If we carry that mentality throughout the season, we will hopefully advance in the playoffs. This is the youngest team I’ve ever had to coach, so my approach will be a little different. Our conference will be very tough and we hope to compete in every game. We will be in every game, no doubt about that; whether we get the results or not will depend on how quickly we learn our system and begin playing off of each other and working together. Although we are really young, I am extremely excited about this team. I think our youth will help us out, our training sessions have been long and tough, and they continue to respond, ‘Give us more.’ Our key positions will be finding the right keeper and finding a consistent goal scorer.

Key returners: Senior Houston Ison (outfielder, right-handed pitcher,
catcher), senior Evan Aguilar (shortstop, right-handed pitcher), senior Alex Bridges (first baseman, right-handed pitcher) Key newcomers: Freshman Weston Wilson (infielder, right-handed pitcher) The coach says: “Our hope for the season is to develop an attitude for winning and an understanding
of the work it takes to compete at a high level. We believe that with the young men we have out here there is a potential to create a lot of positives for our baseball team. The conference is expected to be one of the best in the state, so it will be a grind every time you cross those lines. There are some very talented players who are well-coached, and that makes for a strong conference.”

three freshmen as Nos. 1, 2 and 3. This is a first for any Bison golf team. Starting three freshmen on any varsity team normally spells disaster – I choose to think of it as building for the future. When Drew Weaver was a freshman he started in the six hole for our team. There are two eighth-graders at Ferndale who can play. We will add them next year to our young squad and be formidable. If our youthful squad this year can compete in every match against all competition, it will be a successful year!”

Key newcomers: Caleb Collins, senior left fielder/ shortstop – returning to Andrews for his last year, brings leadership, confidence and heart; Ed
Squires, junior outfielder/ pitcher – up from JV, has something to prove to his teammates and himself by showing he is the right man for the job; Daniel “DJ” Troupe, sophomore outfielder/pitcher – hard worker who is open-mind-
ed, learning new roles he did not have on JV; Qualin Price, freshman infielder/ outfielder. The coach says: “2009 was a bittersweet year – we lost a lot of hard-fought games but learned a lot
about ourselves in the process. Last season is a catalyst for this year and will feed our hunger for winning. With the new conference (PAC-6 2A), we will be able to surprise and open some eyes.”
Net-minders Members of the T. Wingate Andrews tennis team looking to play well this season include (from left) Syed Ahmed, Allan Herendeen, Corey Perry and Chris Fairley. The Red Raiders will play for a second straight season on newly resurfaced courts, and once again will share their facility with Southwest Guilford as the neighboring Cowboys await word on when their new on-campus courts will be constructed. Last year, Andrews and Southwest were conference rivals in the Piedmont Triad 3A, but won’t meet with league bragging rights on the line this spring: Andrews now calls the PAC-6 2A home, while Southwest moved up to the Piedmont Triad 4A. DON DAVIS JR. | HPE
Key returners: Mya Wilson (captain), a senior, main position is forward but plays great on the defensive side as well; Stephanie Joseph (captain), a senior, plays aggressively at forward and also led the team in scoring last season; Aqsha Zaman, a junior left-midfielder, a versatile player. Key newcomers: Freshman Chelsea Larkin (forward), junior Sanjuana Rojas (right-midfielder), senior Porsha Spears (first-time goalie). The coach says: “Over half of the squad is made up of freshmen. However, I feel that experience may not be an issue for us. I see a lot of potential in my players and a willingness to get the win. This season we’re hoping for a great deal of growth individually and as a team, and for an overall great last season for the seniors.”

Key returners: Infielder Scout Albertson, the catalyst that will make us go, a great player and great leader, very good defensive player, and has the stick to be a great offensive player, makes any coach’s job easier because she is like another coach on the field; Brittany Donathan – a pitcher who can take over any game because of great control
and knowing how to mix pitches to be really effective, how well she pitches will determine how well we do, has a smooth lefty swing and can surprise with her power; Tori Butler – utility player willing to play wherever needed for the team to be successful, will play center field and pitch, can be dominant on the mound if she continues to learn how to hit spots and work corners, puts fear in opposing pitchers’ eyes because of her ability to hit the best pitch and hit it well, causes problems with her speed; Ashley Stacy – a coach’s dream, asked to play catcher this season and has not complained, has worked hard and is willing to take a beating behind the plate to make her senior season

I have put
in a lot of work with this team. We started out young when I joined on as coach two years ago. We have grown together. I think this will be their season to shine. It is a new conference (the PAC-6 2A) and it is our chance to start strong and make a bold statement. I was worried that the split with Wheatmore would limit our number of interested players as it did with the ladies’ team (in the fall), but was surprised to have about 15 enthusiastic players show up. a winning record, conference championship or playoff appearance since 1990 – before all of our player were born – and our seniors have set goals in all those areas. We plan on putting Trinity on the map as far as baseball is concerned and it all starts with the seniors. You can have good players, but you have to have senior leadership to win championships. I believe we have a good formula this year to do some damage. This is my senior class, because I’ve been here for four years and the seniors I have now I have had for four years under me. Hopefully the hard work and commitment I’ve put into them and the hard work and commitment they’ve given back to me and their teammates will pay off this year.”

Greg Mauldin and Dillon Shoe. Mauldin qualified for the state tournament and played well in his first appearance (rounds of 75 and 78). Senior Christian Steffen also returns. The coach says: “All four returning players were vital in our success last year and will have to carry the weight this year. Although we have a strong core, we are not as deep as last year. Key newcomers: Sophomores Amber Lake, Hannah Johnson and Hannah Haggerty can play big roles solidifying the corners; freshman Susan Yates will play second and has improved footwork and arm strength with great work ethic. Our team motto is, ‘Our team’s destination is another team’s dream.’ I look forward to this season
and I expect big things for this group as long as we can learn to play together and become one. We expect to be playing in June, and with hard work and commitment we can make that dream become reality. This goal of ours is attainable if our senior leaders lead this team and we control the things we can control: keep teams to three outs an inning, do small things at the plate. I expect us to be in the mix this year for a PAC-6 title between Randleman and Trinity. The players are working on getting better every day and making this season the best Trinity has ever had. Our goal is to not just leave a mark on this season, but a footprint for others to follow.”

Coach: Wayne Patterson Key players: Freshman Colin Miller will be the top player for first-year school Wheatmore. He has played in tournaments all across the state and is a solid striker of the ball. Garrett Rains, Justin Pang and Dakota Patterson all seem to have potential to be good golfers, but only time will tell. The coach says: “This is a very unique situation that I’m looking very forward to here. I have always been a basketball
coach (JV, middle school teams at Southwestern Randolph). Golf is my second passion and I love to play it as often as time permits. I’m excited about the team here. We will have a very young team and a team that will keep improving as the year goes on. I think with the guys we have in place and the work ethic of our team that we will have a strong showing in the PAC-6. I think we might surprise a few of the teams out there and I’m positive that our kids will continue to grow and mature into good guys on the course as well as off of it.”

Coach: Bret Garrett (12 years coaching as an assistant at Southeast Guilford and as JV head coach at Trinity and Ragsdale) Key newcomers: Seven freshmen, four sophomores and three juniors on the first-year team at the new school, none of them with varsity experience.
The coach says: “The freshmen are going to play a big role this year and I have a lot of confidence in them. The sophomores and juniors are also going to have to fill roles they are probably not accustomed to or wouldn’t have to play if they were on an older team, but I feel that they will fill these roles great. I have great expectations for
this season even with our youth. The kids know they have a great opportunity given to them that they wouldn’t have at most schools and they want to make the best of it. Coach Smith and myself are very excited to watch this team grow. It’s going to be fun watching and helping these kids grow up and get better and better for the next few years.”

The coach says: “Our quote/motto to live by is ‘Without self-discipline, success is impossible. Period.’ by Lou Holtz. We want to have at least 10
kids make the regionals. I would love to win the PAC-6, but a total team finish of third in conference our first year out would be outstanding.”

LEDFORD SOCCER

Coach: Adam Duncan (first year) Last year in review: 12-8, reached second round of 2A playoffs before OT loss to Hibriten The coach says: “We have a great group of girls. I’d rather not mention specific names, but so far we have had good conditioning sessions for the past three weeks. With a lot of hard work/team building/team bonding, we will be very successful. Staying healthy and having quality practices with everyone present
is a huge point of emphasis. I won’t be happy unless we make it to the playoffs. That is what the girls expect, so I am grabbing the torch, working hard with the girls and the girls are working hard to make that happen. We are in a very tough (Mid-Piedmont 3A) conference – brand new to us – and there are a lot of talented teams. It always comes down to the same thing: Who wants it more? If we want it more consistently more than the other team, then I have every bit of faith we will have a quality season.”

We’re ethic who is a leader by not sure what to expect example on and off the because we have not court, already drawing competed against them interest from college
in the past. We do know about Asheboro, a regular nonconference foe: The Blue Comets always field a very strong team and I expect the same from them this season. We are expecting big things from our returning players. The Edwards boys – not related – will bring us another year of valuable court experience. They have both worked hard in the offseason and will be expected to be leaders. Jay Buchanan falls right there with them. As a senior, we are counting on him to step up and perform to his ability, and he is talented! The No. 6 spot is going to be a battle between senior David McSwain, junior Zach Fischer and freshmen Will Klemme and Land McGinn. We are working on our doubles teams, but typically, we’ve been able to work through those combinations as the season continues to progress.”
New girls coach Adam Duncan will be looking for big things this spring from Panthers such as (from left) Elizabeth Hughes, Carman Pericozzi and Sara Canada.

Coaches: Chuck Henderson (boys, seventh year) and Marlon Morris (girls, second year as head coach, fourth overall) Last year in review: Boys – fourth place in Central Carolina Conference, placed several athletes in 2A regionals and three in the state meet; Girls – lost key performers to graduation in Onna Elswick (state qualifier in pole vault) and Amber Chappell and Neidy Perdomo (middle and long-distance). ELIOT DUKE | THOMASVILLE TIMES
Jessica Christian (left) and Sara Persiani are ready to help the Panthers leave their mark on the new Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference.
Key returners: Boys – senior Ben Polk qualified
for the state meet and was CCC champion in the 400 meters; other returners include senior Jacob Crickenberger (pole vault, 800), sophomore De Greene (long jump, 100), junior Ty Anderson (shot put, discus) and sophomore Chris Murphy (1600, 3200); Girls – sophomore Sara Katherine Kirkpatrick (800, 4x8, high jump), senior Myia Franklin (100 and 300 hurdles), senior Riley Holman (sprints, long jump) and senior Kaylin Bartlette (sprints, long jump). Key newcomers: Boys
– freshman Anthony Hughes (1600, 3200); Girls – Sophomores Alex Crouch (middle distance) and Madeline Leonard (high jump, sprints).
The coach says: For the boys, “We are entering a new conference (the MidPiedmont 3A) and don’t know a lot about the other schools. We have run against Southern Guilford and Asheboro in the past, so we are somewhat familiar with them. We are looking forward to competing against the other five schools and to improving as the season progresses.”

the 3A competition. Our nonconference schedule is loaded (playing all four classifications’ state champions: East Surry, Central Davidson, SWR and Alexander Central) plus the likes of North Davidson to help us compete on the 3A level. I’m excited about our returning players and the experience they have playing tough competition. I’m also excited about our newcomers and the talent I’ve seen so far. The key for our season is putting the remainder of the puzzle together as well as having some young players step up.”
LEDFORD BASEBALL
Panthers seek return to form FROM PAGE 28
Key returners: Senior pitcher/first baseman Brian Connolly led team in most offensive categories; senior outfielder Jonathan Reid is one of the best athletes in the county with great range in the outfield and speed on the bases; junior middle infielder Victor Zecca has very quick hands and feet and is solid at the plate and in the field; sophomore catcher Pete Guy is solid behind the plate with a strong bat. He led the team in homers last year as a freshman. Key newcomers: Senior outfielder/pitcher
Jonathan Shelton, transfer from Glenn The coach says: “Moving up to 3A and not knowing much about the teams in our new conference (the Mid-Piedmont) definitely poses a challenge going into this season. And even though we return seven out of nine starters, we are still very young with almost half of the returning players being underclassmen. I think if we can get good leadership out of our veterans and have our young players step up, we can be very competitive in our conference.”

Key newcomers: Boys – Zach Greely in the 100 and 200 and possibly in the 110 and 300 hurdles; Girls – freshman Amelia Roddenbery, a distance runner with potential. The coaches say: Workman “hopes to improve on last year’s sixth-place finish.” For Schilly, “A majority of our athletes are first-year competitors. If these athletes show some loyalty to the program, we may see some improvement in future seasons.”

East Davidson’s golf team will be looking to improve on last year’s finish in the Central Carolina Conference while impressing a new head coach. Key performers for the Golden Eagles this spring are expected to be (front, from left) Zach Palmer and Justin Fryar along with (back, from left) Dustin Black, Chris Cox and Andrew Barker.

Coach: Justin Sink (first year) Last year in review: Fifth in the Central Carolina 2A Conference Key returners: Seniors Zach Palmer, Chris Cox, Andrew Barker and Justin Fryar, plus juniors Spencer Everhart and Hayden Smith Key newcomers: Senior Dustin Black, freshmen Wes Cline and Bryce Deweese
The coach says: “I feel that I am inheriting a mature, well-seasoned team (from former head coach Terry Allmon). Last season we were relying on sophomores and juniors with little match experience. The big positive in that is, this year we have juniors and seniors with significant match experience. I believe that we are going to surprise some people this season. If we can make small improvements match to match, I feel that we will be very competitive in conference play.”
Osborne (junior infielder) are all up from JV. The coach says: “Losing five starters from last year and only having two seniors, we will be a young team. We have had great attitudes out of everyone so far and they are all working hard to improve. We want to improve each day, and if we can do that we will have a successful season. As far as the conference, three-time defending state champion Central Davidson will be very good again this year. West Davidson should also be good. Salisbury and Lexington improved a lot last year and should be better. This is Thomasville’s first year in the conference, so we don’t know a lot about them. We know we will have to play our best each game, and if we do that, we hope to be competitive in the conference this year.”
Junior Addie Chaney is one of several key performers back for a strong East Davidson softball squad. Chaney and fellow senior Spencer Embler are returning fourth-year starters for the Golden Eagles. They’re the only seniors on this year’s team.

Coach: Sidney Cecil (first year leading Wildcats) Key performers: A number of underclassmen, many of whom are first-year runners, make up the Wildcats’ 18-member team this spring. Matthew Bryant should perform well in the sprints. Korby Chappell is strong in the distance events and should score in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Zack Cooley is a top returner with ex-
perience in the 300 hurdles. Chris Smith figures to excel in middle distances. Valerie Myers is coming off a personal-best of 4 feet, 3 inches in the high jump. Melanie Williams in the girl “with the fastmoving legs” and will compete in sprints. Other keys for South will be Jessica Ayers, Miles Buie, Josh Bundy, Zach Cody, Arther Flood, Caroline Harrison, Haven Leigh Hartman, J.J. Kennedy, Jason Martin, Brooke Snother, Randall
Witcher and Christina Young. The coach says: “I am really looking forward to this season – this being my first year – and the runners are really excited as well. The athletes have been working hard these past two weeks getting their legs in shape even though Mother Nature hasn’t been our best friend. With so many underclassmen, our future track program looks like it will continue to grow.

Coach: Benny Clodfelter (first season), assistants Lawren Cody, Barrett Clodfelter Key returners: The 14-player roster includes four girls who played last year: seniors Jessica Cook and Samantha Justice and juniors Chelsie Boyce and Courtney Krayniewski. sophomores Brenna Ferrell, Savannah Thompson and Stacey Wagoner, juniors Casey Jones and Ashlyn Lyndon, and seniors Leah March and Madison Walker. The coach says: “Due to weather, we have had only two practices outside. The team is inexperienced but very eager to learn. We have the possibility of becoming a good team, but it will be a work in progress. The girls’ attitudes are positive and they are coachable – I look forward to a great season.”

Coach: Bob Weckworth (fifth year) Last year in review: Third in Northwest 1A Conference at 7-5, went 10-6 overall Key players: Junior Joseph Riazzi, a twotime All-NWC performer, will play No. 1; senior Christian Immel and sophomore Lane Kiser will be in the second or third spots; freshman Kevin Weckworth will start off at No. 4 but could quickly challenge for No. 2; sophomore Conor Wilson will be a solid No. 5.
The coach says: “Overall, this will be a young team, with only one senior on the roster. However, the talent lies in the youth, as the additions of Kiser (injured all of last year) and Weckworth (a freshman) should make the team stronger from top to bottom. Riazzi is ready to step up and make a run at conference Player of the Year. Immel and Wilson will also be key factors, as they should be formidable as a No. 3 doubles team.” Picture this: Villains’ photo, Page 47

Given we are in a tough conference for tennis (the Central Carolina 2A, with state powers Salisbury and Lexington), we hope to pull out some victories and strive to place higher than last year. Coach: Brien Braswell Key returners: Alex Kubrick and Karina Menjivar lead the senior group. Kubrick, a keeper who has signed with Charlotte, has had a wonderful career and will need to continue that trend as well as be a senior leader on a young team. Menjivar has overcome injury and will hopefully provide quality minutes in the defensive third. Juniors Allie Scheffer and Elise Widman also are back. Scheffer is the lead marker and anchors one side of the field. She has done a great job in the past and is being counted upon to do the same this spring. Widman returns from an ACL tear the first day of practice last year and hopefully will provide quality minutes, most likely in the defensive third. Key sophomores with experience include Claudia Menjivar, Eroncia Berry, Leah Flem-

Taylor plays up top and will have to carry some of the scoring load vacated by graduated Ruthie Lile. Frawley is another utility player who will be valuable in the team’s success. Key newcomers: Freshmen Anne Scheffer (Allie’s sister) and Lauren Merritt will be impact players, with their positions to be figured out in the early weeks of the season. capable of shooting even-par or better. We need to be consistent in our work throughout the season to improve in our short game, and have set a goal of qualifying for the regional and working hard to qualify for the state championships as a team. Last year we were inconsistent around the greens, and with continued improvement, we should be able to shoot scores that will allow us to be competitive with the stronger teams in 4A. Herron and Thompson have worked hard to improve their ball-striking and should improve in course management; the addition of Snyder should anchor the team with consistent scoring in the No. 1 position, and Boyce and Turner should combine to give Ragsdale the fourth score that is needed to compete in conference play.”

Leitner and Chris Armwood, junior catcher Trey Swaim, junior pitcher Tyler Southcott, sophomore pitcher/third baseman Mitch Carstens, junior outfielder Logan Erath, junior pitcher/outfielder Sean Faherty, junior pitcher TyQuan Roberts. The coach says: “Everything we accomplish will be based on how well we pitch. We lost 21 wins on the mound last year, including a fifth-rounder as well as a kid who went 22-2 in his career (David Coffey). However, our pitchers should continue to get better and hopefully will be throwing it best at the end of the season. Our pitchers are inexperienced, but they have talent. I think a lot of teams would love to have our staff. We are excited to bring back a combination of speed and power on offense as well as a very experienced defense. I expect this defense to be a real strength, as the entire middle of the field is full of veteran players. Hopefully these veterans will help our young pitchers and allow them the confidence to attack the strike zone. All seven teams in our league (the new Piedmont Triad 4A) made the playoffs last year. Five of us are used to making the playoffs every year. It should be challenging, but fun. If our players are competitors, they should really be looking forward to this league.”

Daniel Branston, Justin Koenig, John Ritter, Lance Jones, Emmanuel Obi-Rapu Coach: Sara Harmon (second year) Last year in review: 13-3 record, Mid-Piedmont Conference champions, made it to the 3A state quarterfinals before a 5-4 loss to Lake Norman; all-conference honors for Cameron Smith, Justin Koenig and Emmanuel Obi-Rapu Key returners: Smith, a sophomore, competed at No. 1 last season and reached state tournament in singles; Koenig, a junior, will play No. 2 after being No. 3 last year. He was 11-0 in doubles. Obi-Rapu provides great senior leadership along with John Ritter. Key newcomers: Senior Daniel Branston transferred in and will contend for a spot in the top six. Freshman
Steven Walsh should get quality matches, especially in doubles.
The coach says: “You always hope you can go undefeated or be No. 1 in the conference at the end of the regular season. All the guys want to be successful and are really pushing each other in practice to elevate their game since we know we’ll be playing a lot of tough competition this year in (the Piedmont Triad) 4A. I’ve been really impressed with the offseason improvements of Justin Koenig, Stephen Miller, Christopher Wood and LaBryant Ashworth. All their hard work is going to benefit us during the season. We’ve got a lot of tough matches scheduled, hoping it will better prepare us for a chance at postseason play.”

We are playing three defending state champions – 1A East Surry on the road, 3A Southwestern Randolph,

Coach: John Fowler (sixth season as head coach, 20th in program) Last year in review: 18-9, secondplace regular season and Piedmont Triad 3A Conference Tournament champions, lost in second round of state playoffs to Marvin Ridge Key returners: All-State senior infielder Parks Jordan has signed with North Carolina – polished hitter, solid fielder and great baserunner, exceptional leader; senior pitcher Justin Hunt has signed with UNC-Asheville – 6foot-3, 215-pound power pitcher was dominant at times last season and will “carry the load” this year; sophomore third baseman/catcher Jason Smith – strong-armed, solid hitter who was called up for 2009
playoffs and hit .800, looks to lead both defensively and offensively with potential for power numbers at the plate; junior outfielder Ryan Parker – good left-handed swing, speedy, possibility for power at the plate; senior outfielder Luke Manuel – hit .450 and led team in doubles in limited action. A healthy senior season could produce big numbers at the plate. Key newcomers: Sophomore Noah Pearl, a transfer from Andrews, will pitch and play infield or outfield – swings bat well and runs well, a plus to the program; sophomore Garrett Motsinger – a left-handed hitting middle infielder with good speed, arm and fielding who will provide an offensive spark; freshman Alec Hodges – a 6-2, 195-pound pitcher
with a heavy fastball and good breaking ball: could be dominant, can play first and third base as well, has power potential as a hitter. The coach says: “The Bobcats will be ‘young’ in many ways, having lost four starters, including 70 percent of last year’s pitching. Players will move to new positions and be asked to play various places throughout. With hard work and patience, the possibilities for success are there. Last year was the first in 14 years NOT winning a conference title, so the Bobcats will be focused to return to the top. Team verse for the year is Isaiah 40:31, which underscores the realized need for patience combined with hard work as we progress through what then could be a championship season.”
Last year in review: 3-9 overall, 2-6 North State 2A Conference, fourth place; all-conference honors for Mason King and Aaron Perry, who finished in second place for doubles in the conference tournament and have just started their season playing for Winston-Salem State. Key returners: Junior Omar Ramirez, easily the fastest player on the team, will take the No. 1 seed after winning five singles matches last season; junior Cody Hanks takes No. 2 – he’s our slicer; junior Garrett Glidewell will play in the third spot – don’t let
his size fool you; sophomore Josh Richardson is also back on the court. Key newcomers: Good turnout for tryouts included sophomore soccer player Zack Creed – “Speedy Creedy” – along with potential talent from sophomore Jordan Tilley and freshman Cody Richardson (Josh’s brother). The coach says: “With having six of my players graduate last year, my returning players are extremely important. This season is extremely important to my returning guys. This is a new conference for us (Mid-Piedmont 3A) and my guys feel like

Coach: John Funderburk (third year with varsity, fourth overall) Last year in review: 15-7 overall, 7-3 North State 2A Conference (second place for a second straight year) Key returners: All-conference players Lindsay Inman and Jessica Frame (seniors) and Brittany Kallam and Morgan Hendricks (juniors); Laura Daly was honorable mention All-NSC. Key newcomers: Freshman Robin Stoner; players up from JV are Akeala Goins (senior), Amanda Holliday, Heather Sisk, Amber Stanley, Harley Randolph and Katie Nelson. The coach says: “We are very excited about the upcoming season
and very aware that we have our hands full not only because of moving from 2A to 3A (the Mid-Piedmont Conference) but having defending state champion Southwestern Randolph and state powerhouse Ledford in our conference. This alone can cause some sleepless nights. With always-solid Asheboro and North Forsyth also in the mix, our plate will be full. Our schedule this year includes Eastern, Northwest, Northern, Randleman, Providence Grove, Northeast and Trinity, all teams that are always solid performers. Pitchers Morgan Hendricks and Robin Stoner will face some of the best players in the state, but will depend on our veteran infielders to make solid defensive plays. Our outfield will be young and testing varsity
waters for the first time. They definitely will have to grow up quickly. Heather Sisk, Akeala Goins, Amanda Holliday, Katie Nelson, Harley Randolph and Amber Stanley are all experienced middle school and junior varsity players. Hopefully they will accept their new challenge and have a very good year. Playing with West Stokes in our conference the last four years has given us great experience. I feel with the abilities and enthusiasm we have seen as a coaching staff, we will try to put our best step forward. The returning seniors are setting the bar high for this season and if they will lead by example we could have a successful year. Our hope is for a winning season and to make the state tournament – then, anything could happen.”
Key returners: Senior pitcher/infielder Daniel Doss – team captain, a hard worker who had a great junior campaign, led conference with a .630 league-only batting average, hit .447 overall with one home run and 12 RBIs; junior pitcher/catcher Kelly Patram – a versatile player who has a strong arm and the ability to play several positions, started every game last year hitting close to .300 with two home runs and 11 RBIs, honorable mention All-NSC. Other returning seniors are outfielder Ian Hanson and first baseman Christian Hutchens. Key newcomers: Sophomore pitcher/infielder Blaine Lamb, will be called upon to shore up a portion of the depleted
middle infield; junior pitcher/third baseman Daniel Jones, a steady JV player last year with the ability to develop into a solid everyday player; junior outfielder James Sara. The coach says: “The Storm will face an uphill battle as they enter into the tough Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference. The Storm graduated six seniors off last year’s team and also lost two underclassmen who transferred to Wesleyan. This edition of the Storm will be both young and inexperienced, but I am excited about the opportunity to watch the younger guys develop. We are not going to intimidate anyone when we get off the bus; however, we are planning on showing up. We are trying to instill the mindset of improving every pitch of every inning of every game – if we can achieve that goal, good things can happen. This is a great group of guys, and if we will focus on what we can control instead of what we can’t, we will be fine.”

they have something to prove and really want to get out there and win. In years past, it was all about King and Perry. This year, Ramirez, Hanks and Glidewell are looking to shine in the spotlight. I know that some of these guys practiced over the winter and I can’t wait to see them in action. Our team goal is to have more wins than last season and to make a positive impression on the new conference. As the coach, my goal is to have the young players learn as much as they can from the older players so in a year or two, it’ll be their time to shine.”

We have a lot of talent from last year, but we have also gained a lot more talent in areas we were lacking.
The girls will have high expectations. We have a very experienced team, so they know what they need to do. The girls will be looking to carry over the success of the indoor season, and with this being the largest team we have had, we should be deep in a lot of events.” For the boys, “I’m looking for a good season. We have a lot of the team coming back and have added some new members that should make us stronger in the events we were weak in last year.
