Nearly 40 years later, Toshumba is running eight miles a day and isn’t slowing down a bit. His yearly wardrobe choice is a testament to that. “I am the same size I was 37

I think people will have interest in learning the history of fashions and in bringing Shakespeare to the schools. As former owner of the Antique Emporium in Thomasville, Hunter has accumulated an extensive collection of vintage clothing, including a dress worn by an actress on Bonanza who played Little Joe’s (Michael Landing) girlfriend. Also on display will be an assortment of parasols, hats, purses and antique jewelry. Hunter said she thought

“I am the same size I was 37 years ago, Toshumba said. “Running makes me feel good. Anything can become an addiction and running is addictive. You have to keep all your parts working. Sitting around doesn’t help. What started out as a inexpensive way to stay in shape has grown into a lifestyle for Toshumba, a retired counselor who worked with the organization CAPPS (Children and Parents Partnership Services). A vegetarian since 1972, Toshumba maintains a healthy diet and rarely misses a day of exercise. Rain or shine, warm or cold, Toshumba finds the time to get in his hour and a half run from his home to Optimist Park and back. The route totals eight miles and gives Toshumba time to reflect on his thoughts and get ready for the rest of the day. “It makes me a calmer person, said Toshumba. “My wife will sometimes tell me to go run if I’m getting into a bunch of different things around the house. I use the time to pray and to give thanks for everything I have in life. I’m retired now and am comfortable with my life. I’m thankful that I can still do it and it’s nice having a little time to myself. Regardless of where he is or what the conditions are like outside, Toshumba is determined to get his daily jog in. Letters to the Editor Winter wonderland

Our anticipation of the winter’s beauty in the form of pure white snow gives memories of childhood. Only nature at its unique best can produce such a gift. Does everyone really love snow, that beautiful white, pure, mystical gift from above? I often said that snow is one way God has of beautifying His Earth. Even the unattractive and ugly sights that man is responsible once covered with gentle snowflakes. Sights of His Creation become clean when covered with snow if only for a brief period of time. When we were children and at a younger age, we loved that part of winter and looked to those first snowflakes. Sleds, making snowmen and other snow related events, were a real thrill. From the mountains to the seashore, people choose their residency using the various temperatures and weather as a factor. Nature pretty much determines who and where gets the most snow. Nationwide, those pure soft crystal white flakes visit the earth almost everywhere. Most people, I believe appreciate this part of nature’s gifts to us. Everyone may not agree with my thoughts but that’s okay I guess I still have a child like spirit still remaining. Let us stay young as long as we can. Remembering the “Good old days” and the song, “Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow.” What a beautiful Winter Wonderland. By the way, man cannot control or call the shots. God has the authority over His creation. Van E. Brinkley and granddaughter Gabriana D. Kennedy

To the Editor

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Joe, Amy, and all the staff at Thomasville Pharmacy for all the wonderful years of customer service they provided to me and my family. It was always a pleasure to walk in and and be greeted by your name and with a smile. They provided the kind of personal service that you rarely see in businesses these days. I wish Joe and Barbara a wonderful retirement and am so glad that Amy and her staff will still be providing superb service in their new postions at Rite-Aid. Cindie Bollinger Thomasville

To the Editor

Everyone feels the effects of the recession. Everyone, that is, except for the Democratic majority in Raleigh. The farleft liberal politics go on as usual, and despite the layoffs, cuts in health and education and despite the claims of “budgeting” by the Governor, the fact is that our General Assembly spent as much as they have in previous years and the debt has grown proportionally. Some examples of the big-spending N.C. General Assembly are: • HB 628 - $25 mil-

lion to build a fishing pier in Nags Head • HB 1508 – insures $347 million in new State debt without voter approval. • SB 200 – Sets current gas tax as minimum (without this legislation the N.C. gas tax – which is the second highest in the Southeast – would have dropped by 2 cents per gallon on July 1, 2009). • SB 202 – Itemizes House version, which adds $860 million in tax increases, including income tax, sales tax, corporate tax and services tax. Do they really consider this a budget? During what has been called “the worst recession since the Great Depression,” the North Carolina Democratic majority has raised taxes $1.1 billion dollars (SB 461) — a 6 percent tax burden on all residents. (All this despite N.C. receiving $1.7 billion in federal aid). These tax increases are taking place when N.C.’s unemployment rate is 11 percent – one of the highest in the Nation. N.C already has the eighth highest total tax rate at 7.75 percent (two of the seven other states have no sales tax) and one of the highest corporate tax rates in the Southeast. The largest growing employment sector in North Carolina since October 2008 has been — you guessed it — in Government jobs. Our General assembly has spent over $40 million tax dollars on museums, art councils and symphonies while we struggle to feed our families. Do you still believe the Democratic Party is for the “common man?” Our own Represenative Hugh Holliman supported these Bills as well as refusing to stop forced annexations. Check for yourself at nccivitas.org or the State General Assembly website — Holliman’s voting record is public record. On social issues, they gave us a smoking ban. They also gave us the dishonestly named “healthy youth” act (HB 88) which removes control of sex education curriculum from local school boards and eliminates the teaching of abstinence until marriage. SB 461 — dubiously called the “Racial Justice Act” — reduces sentences for convicted criminals based on race. If that is not enough, they gave us SB 489, which reduces “point ranges” for criminals with prior records and reduces their sentences additionally (despite Governor Purdue’s denials, this was a Democratic majority Bill). It is time for a change. It is time for jobs, not more handouts. We do not need another “professional politician” in Raleigh, we need a regular person who is one of us and who understand our struggles, and Rayne Brown is that person. Vote for Rayne Brown in the Republican primaries on May 4 and the general elections in November. Keith Bost Sapona, N.C.

Snow deadlines and other this-n-thats THIS-N-THATS

LARRY MURDOCK Guest Columnist Well, if you‘re reading this article on Saturday morning, a lot of things happened to make it so. With the impending forecast of heavy snow, an early news deadline was set so that those things that assure that the Times would be delivered on time happened. The Times is printed in Durham on the presses at the Durham Herald-Sun — a sister newspaper of the High Point Enterprise and Thomasville Times — and then trucked to Thomasville where local carriers pick up their bundles of papers and get them out to you, the reader. ••• Caution: Gayle and I stopped for gas at a local combination gas, convenience store and mini-restaurant the other night. We, as a matter of convenience, use this place fairly regularly and we insert a major gas company credit card at the pump. Most pumps have a button to push if you want a receipt. However, this particular place prints a receipt whether you push the button or not. After filling my vehicle, I make it a habit to get my receipt. I don’t think there is enough information on the receipt that would allow someone to get a duplicate card, but, I’m not going to take a chance. On the night in question, I reached into the slot to get my receipt only to find the opening jammed with receipts for purchases made prior to mine. Several purchases

were made with a Visa and MasterCard with the name of the card owner on the receipt. I took all the receipts home and shredded them. Several years ago someone apparently got our card number and purchased quite a bit of fuel in Miami. The gas company noticed that our account had been charged with an unusually large amount of fuel and called to verify if we were making those purchases, which we were not. If you purchase with a gas or credit card, check for your receipt before you leave. ••• On Sept. 7, 2007, I wrote about a unique man who lived in Piedmont Center. I reminisced about Hubert Norris. At that time he was, 98 years young. I wrote about how he would be out pushing his walker which was equipped with wheels. I commented that he was not “lollygagging’ along and how he walked fairly fast for his age. Gayle and I often talked about his gardening capabilities. He raised tomatoes and other vegetables in a small area behind his apartment and a small tomato garden beside his apartment. We use to joke with him and told him that if he would throw a seed in a bucket of concrete, a tomato plant would grow. Mr. Norris passed away this week just 58 days from his 101st Birthday. He would have turned 101 on March 24. The Rev. Kelly Barefoot delivered the eulogy and he too remarked about Mr. Norris’ tomato raising abilities. A kind man, we’ll miss him on our walks through Piedmont. ••• I’ve known Joe Greeson for quite a few years. I first met Joe at Mann’s Drug on the Square. That was when downtown was really booming. Joe later opened his own drug store. Joe and Amy sold their drug store, Thomasville Pharmacy, on Randolph Street, a couple of weeks ago. Joe says he is going into full retirement, which probably means getting in Barbara’s way around the

house. I hope Barbara will let Joe run things around the Greeson house, like the vacuum, the washer, the dryer, the iron. The Greeson’s are all good people. Amy and her staff are now affiliated with Rite-Aid on Randolph Street. She will continue to focus on her interest in the “Healing Seekers” program. To see an excellent story on Amy and the Healing Seekers program, go to this web site www.healingseekers.com. ••• Morris, an 82-year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, ‘You’re really doing great, aren’t you?’ Morris replied, “Just doing what you said, Doc. ‘Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.’” The doctor said, “I didn’t say that. I said, ‘You’ve got a heart murmur; be careful’” ••• Here is heart warming story to close out this session on this cold snowy morning. A recent NBC Today Show told of a Kirkwood, Colorado High School mentally challenged student who had served as the manager of the Boys Basketball team for several years. The Coach and his teammates decided that they were going to let him play in a game during his senior year. He was substituted into a game and made quite a few baskets. Spectators were overcome with joy at his triumphant plays. Likewise, members of his team and the opposing team came onto the court and surrounded him with hugs and high fives. Can’t you just envision that scene? Doesn’t it make you have cold chills? This is a good ending to this week’s column. Stay warm and safe today. RELIGION

Spiritual growth for men and women of faith VIEWPOINT

DOUG CREAMER Syndicated Columnist

Last Sunday I was invited to speak at the First Baptist Church of Spencer as part of their men’s day celebration. I was warmly greeted by the members as I arrived just before the start of Sunday school classes. After Sunday school, I was escorted up into the sanctuary, which was incredibly beautiful. Its beauty was only surpassed by the sweet presence of God I felt while I was there. I normally get a little nervous before I speak someplace, but I was enveloped by the sweet spirit of God because some good friends were lifting me up in prayer. In preparation for my message, I sent an email out to some friends asking them, what makes a boy a man? I got some great responses. One friend had a one word answer, “selfless.” Another

person said that a boy becomes a man when he has to pay the bills for his own apartment. Another pointed out that when a boy takes responsibility for his actions, faces the consequences, and makes restitution, he has become a man. One person wrote me that sadly, some boys never grow up and become men. While their bodies have grown physically, they have never taken full responsibility for themselves. I think one of the best and most concise definitions I received was, “I believe a man takes responsibility for his actions, does not shirk his duty to God, family and country, and is a gentleman in manner and bearing.” I liked this definition because it looks at every aspect of a man’s life in how he relates to God and others. More important than being a man or a woman, in my opinion, is becoming a man or woman of God. When we ask Jesus into our lives we become born again, brand new Christian babies. It’s at this point we have the responsibility to grow up in the faith to become mature Christians who are able to rise up and train the next generation of believers. Sadly, many people never grow spiritually.

They come to church as babies and never make an effort to grow up and take responsibility within the church. There are three things I believe a baby Christian can do to help themselves grow and become men and women of faith. The place to begin growing is by spending time with your Heavenly Father. You need to learn more about Him through reading His word. He will reveal Himself to you in unique ways as you begin to read the Bible. You also need to talk with Him and that is done through prayer. Prayer is a two way conversation where you both talk and listen to God. These are the first baby steps of growing up.

As you begin to grow, it is vital that you learn to give back. Babies are very self-centered and must have all their needs met. Adults take others into consideration. They look out for the needs of others. Growing up spiritually means that you will play a part in helping others grow. There are so many ways you can help around your church. Every church needs nursery, children’s and youth workers. God looks for you to be faithful in the little things before He allows you to take on big responsibilities. So find something that needs to be done around the church and jump in with both feet. In order to grow up spiritually, we need to

complish that that goal, you should be investing your time in growing through reading the Bible and praying, learning to give back by working in the church, and carrying yourselves with honor when you walk out of the church doors into your mission field. Are we men and women who represent the Christian faith in such a way that others are attracted to it? That’s what it means to be men and women of faith.

live our lives with honor and respect. People will examine your life to determine if faith in God is making a positive difference. If they see evidence that faith in God is having a positive impact then they will want what you have in their lives. We have to remember that we carry the light and hope of the world in our lives and the world is anxiously searching for it. If we could learn the art of giving it away in such a way that it is inviting and desirable, then we will be showing signs of spiritual maturity. I want to encourage you to grow up spiritually so you can become strong men and women of God. In order to ac-

Matt Ridge is, and forever will be, a part of the University of North Carolina basketball family. But after Wednesday’s 101-69 demolition by Davidson County Community College over his alma mater’s junior varsity team, he might be considered more of a stepchild. Having played in the Carolina blue for two seasons on the UNC JV team, coach Ridge has experienced the feeling of donning a uniform with North Carolina written across the front. On Wednesday, he also realized how special it feels to beat the program in which he once competed. It was a memorable night for everyone in the Storm community and Ridge intends on enjoying it for a little while, but there are bigger prizes ahead for him and his team to claim. “We hope when we look back on the season it is not the highlight,” he said in a phone interview on Friday. “We are trying to keep things in perspective and use it as a confidence builder. As coach of the Storm, Ridge entered the game 0-3 against the Tar Heels — the most recent loss at the Dean E. Smith Center where UNC won 81-69. North Carolina came in undefeated, but left with a thumping that made the bus ride back to Chapel Hill quite long. Shockingly, DCCC was up 22 at halftime, playing one of its finest halves of basketball to date. Everyone in the building was aware of what the scoreboard read during play, except for the Storm coaching staff. “I honestly try not to look at the score in the first half,” Ridge said. “It is funny, because at halftime we came in and coach (Brandon) Mullis said, ‘I didn’t know we were up 22 until I walked in here.’” I told him that is a sign of a great coach, because you are focused on what we are doing and not the scoreboard.” Now aware of his

team’s status, Ridge proceeded to give a halftime speech he has heard several times before. “I told them the same message I heard for four years at Carolina — No basketball game is won or lost in the first half,” said Ridge. The team was slow in response to the message to start the second half, allowing two UNC baskets in the first minute. The Storm burned a timeout to get refocused, and it was all DCCC after that. A 15-1 run doubledup the Tar Heels, making the hyped up event quite

uneventful for the last 14 minutes. Still not all that worried about the score, Ridge finally looked up at the scoreboard at the time DCCC held its largest lead of the night and was stunned at what it read. “We were up 80-42 and I looked up at the scoreboard and was a little taken back,” he said. “I think it was the most complete game we have played this year.” Defense set the tone for Davidson. Seminoles drop ACC game at Duke BY BRYAN STRICKLAND Durham Herald Sun DURHAM — At what proved to be the end of a spirited comeback bid by Florida State on Wednesday night, the Seminoles somehow fought for offensive rebounds on three consecutive missed free throws. None of those rebounds yielded points for FSU, and Duke senior Jon Scheyer calmly drained a jumper at the other end after the last of those failed put-back attempts. Florida State brought energetic effort and defensive pressure that have become trademarks in recent seasons, but the Blue Devils

brought the same and then some to come away with a 70-56 victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Scheyer scored 22 points, Kyle Singler added 20 despite deep foul trouble, and Duke’s defense forced the Seminoles into 22 turnovers and held them to 34.5-percent shooting in the second half. The Noles hurt their own cause with a 4-of-11 effort from the free throw line after halftime. Florida State had been on a 120 run to pull within 51-47 with nine minutes left before the flurry of failed follows off missed free throws, but the Seminoles mustered just one field goal over the next seven-and-a-half minutes as Duke answered FSU’s push with a

methodical 15-2 run to lead 66-50. “After that little stretch, I looked around at the guys and said, ‘That can’t happen,’ ” said Duke senior Lance Thomas, who added six points and six rebounds. “Our guys took that personal, and from there we took off. We were in control of the game. “We didn’t let their 12-0 run stop us at all. We just played really poised and closed out the game.” Six different Duke players scored in the decisive push that followed FSU’s run, helping the No. 8 Blue Devils (17-3, 5-2 ACC) win their 39th consecutive home game against unranked oppo-

It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve been active in competitive long range shooting. One of the things about being involved in something and dropping out is how fast things change. My last years at Camp Perry, the standard scope was a BR24x Leopold. These scopes cost about $800 then and, while there were more expensive scopes available, the Leopold BR24 worked about as well as anything. For a scope to work well for a competitive long range shooter, it must not only hold its zero and be durable, it must be able to be constantly adjusted in repeatable movements and always return back to that zero. This is because long range shooters have to make big adjustments to compensate for bullet drop and wind conditions and the scope has to go right back to the same spot when the match is over. I recently did an interview with Charles Ballard, the 2008 and 2009 F Class National Champion. These matches are shot at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards. When I asked Charles if they were still using the BR24, he looked at me like I was describing something from the civil war. The scope of choice now sells for about $1,800 in the standard version and can go over $3,000 if you add a lot of options. Normal shooters and hunters don’t need as much precision as the guys who shoot the length of ten football fields and put 20 bullets in a circle about the size of a grapefruit. Normal shooting situations call for clarity, durability and the ability to make repeatable adjustments. Except for the initial sight in, it’s very unusual to make a 10 minute of angle adjustment in normal situations. This week, I tested the Alpen Apex series 6 to 24 scope. This is a 32 MM tube scope with 1/8 minute of angel external click adjustments for windage and elevation. The Apex series scopes also have the parallax adjustment on the left side of the scope for convenience.

SPORTS Mood a lot different in Tar Heel locker room BY BRIANA GORMAN Durham Herald Sun CHAPEL HILL — The mood in the North Carolina locker room was palpable after Tuesday’s 77-63 win over N.C. State that stopped the Tar Heels’ three-game losing streak. For the first time in three games, instead of silence and tension there were smiles, laughter and joking around by the Tar Heels. And no player looked happier than Deon Thompson. The senior, who seemingly has disappeared from games this season, made his presence known from the start, scoring UNC’s first three points and leading the Tar Heels with 20 points. It was the fifth time Thompson has scored at least 20 points this season but the first since posting 23 in a win over Nevada on Nov. 29. “I’ve been more aggressive in practice and just more determined, more into it and intense, Thompson said. “As a

NIGHT From page B1 pressure applied by Phillip Williams, Justin Glover and Derrick Mayo caused UNC turnovers and disrupted their offensive sets. The offense was not that shabby either. DCCC nailed 12 of 20 from 3point land, getting the ball to wide open shooters for much of the night who made big shot after big shot. Having never beaten the Tar Heels, there

leader, you’ve got to be intent and enthused about things, and I’m just trying to be a better leader. Thompson’s aggressiveness was evident in the first half as he grabbed two rebounds, his only offensive rebounds of the game, after missed free throws and muscled them in for four of his nine first-half points. But arguably Thompson’s most significant field goal came in the second half. With 10:09 left, he picked off a pass at midcourt and instead of handing it off to one of UNC’s guards, the 6-9, 245-pound forward dribbled it up the court himself. Thompson took the ball all the way to the basket for a crowd-silencing dunk to cap a 13-0 run that put the Tar Heels up for good. “I was just happy, said Thompson, who let out a ferocious yell after the dunk. “It was definitely kind of a turning point in the game for us.

Thompson finished the game 9-of-14 from the floor, the most shots he has attempted since a win over Albany on Dec. 30. Thompson had been a combined 11-of-22 in losses to Clemson, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. But Thompson’s impact was not just felt on the statistics sheet. The senior could be seen cheering on his teammates, offering a fist bump and seemed to energize the Tar Heels. “Deon had a great game tonight, Drew said. “He was doing everything that we know Deon can do. He was posting low, [getting] offensive rebounds, finishing in the paint, making stops on the defensive end. He just had a very solid allaround game. Despite Thompson’s big night to help the Tar Heels break their slump, after the game he mostly wanted to talk about the team effort and less about his individual performance. “I’m more happy with the team performance,

could have been a lot of added pressure for Ridge, but he saw it as any other game, despite it being the same team he played for years ago. “Pressure is something self-inflicted, he said. “I feel pressure every game whether we are playing Piedmont Baptist or the UNC JV team. I honestly didn’t feel any more pressure against UNC than I did against Piedmont. The Tar Heels play just one away game each season, so the chances of them coming to Brinkley Gym again next season is unlikely. Considering

the outcome, they may not want to come back anyway, but Ridge has already planted the seed for next season asking UNC coach Jerod Haase to put in a word to the staff for next season to once again schedule a home and home. Regardless, it was an accomplishment that can never be taken away from Ridge, his staff and his players. The record may read UNC, 3, DCCC, 1, but that one is all that matters for now. kepley@tvilletimes.com

The only event uncertain on Patrick’s schedule is the Feb. 13 season opener at Daytona International Speedway. The No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet is entered in the event, but its driver will not be determined until after Patrick’s race in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) event on Feb. 6. Patrick will compete in the Daytona ARCA race in a JR Motorspor ts-pre pared No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet. Beyond Daytona, Patrick’s 2010 campaign is confirmed starting with the Feb. 20 race at Auto Club Speedway and the Feb. 27 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Following Vegas, Patrick will take a four-month hiatus to focus on her IndyCar Series responsibilities before returning to drive the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevy in the Nationwide

FSU’s final offensive rebound off a missed free throw resulted in Singler’s fourth foul at the 8:36 mark, but Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski opted to leave Singler on the floor. After Scheyer stopped the drought with his jumper and then Brian Zoubek tipped one in, Singler drained a 3pointer. Singler also keyed an early second-half run that put FSU into a perpetual catch-up mode. After the Seminoles trimmed a 39-29 halftime deficit down to 39-33, Singler carried the team during a 12-2 spurt for a 51-35 lead, reeling off nine points. He scored from everywhere, hitting a 3-pointer, a jumper, a layup and a couple of free throws. “Kyle played really well,” Krzyzewski said. “Hopefully his shooting, his scoring, is coming out of it. We didn’t take him out because we had confidence in him to not foul. “Also, I felt like the game was going to be won from the eight-minute mark to the four-minute mark, so we had to leave him in there.” Freshman Michael Snaer powered FSU’s second-half stand, scoring nine of the Seminoles’ 12 unanswered points that made it 51-47. The tracks we’ve selected not only compliment the IndyCar schedule, but will give me quality seat time at a variety of facilities.” While Patrick’s participation in the Daytona race is to be determined, JR Motorsports will still field two cars for the Nationwide Series season opener. ton paced FSU with 14 points apiece. Both teams shot around 50 percent in the first half, but Florida State got off eight fewer shots because of turnover troubles, and the Devils headed to halftime with a 39-29 lead. The Seminoles, averaging an ACC-high 16.8 turnovers, outdid themselves with 14 in the first half — many forced by Duke but several of the unforced variety, as well. For the most part, Duke’s big three came up big in the first half, as Scheyer, Nolan Smith (11 points) and Singler combined to outscore FSU 30-29 in the first half. Scheyer led the way, getting 13 before halftime while hitting 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Even so, Duke led just 28-26 going to the final five minutes of the half after Xavier Gibson and Ryan Reid combined for six points in about a minute. The Blue Devils, however, finished the half strong. Scheyer and Singler drilled 3-pointers, and Smith hit a pair of free throws on a lastsecond foul 25 feet from the basket on Gibson the provide the halftime margin. While FSU kept it interesting, the only time Duke trailed was when Alibi opened the game with a dunk. “They’re a really good basketball team,” Krzyzewski said. “Our team had to show great resolve.”

Once the ARCA race is complete, we will get with Danica and make a decision based on the best interests of her, the team, and our sponsor Go Daddy. I’m extremely pleased with the working relationship between Danica and (crew chief) Tony Eury Jr. They are communicating well and working extremely hard in preparing for this season.” GoDaddy.com will serve as primary sponsor for 10 of Patrick’s 12 races in the No. 7 Chevrolet in 2010.

SPORTS From page B1 Parallax correction is tantamount to getting the best accuracy out of a rifle since it directly affects group size. Parallax in optical devices might be described as distortion of light waves that happens when magnification is present. Any optical device has a certain amount of parallax. In spotting scopes and binoculars, it’s of little importance. In rifle scopes where the position of the image affects where the bullet goes, it’s a big deal. To set the parallax, put the scope/rifle on a stable platform with the crosshairs on a target and move your eye vertically and laterally across the ocular lens or eye-piece. If the cross hairs crawl across the target, parallax is present and the position of your head on the stock will affect group size. On an adjustable parallax scope, the error can be removed at each specific range by adjusting the parallax knob until the parallax disappears. Normally, this also focuses the scope for that distance at the same time. Having the knob on the left side of the scope makes it much easier to set than when the adjustment is out front on the objective lens. For a test platform, I put the scope on a sleeved Remington 700 .308 that took second place in the 1990 United States Palma Match. If accuracy can be boring, this rifle is boring. It will put 10 shots in one ragged hole at 100 yards with the right ammunition. For this test, I used Federal Premium 168 grain match ammunition. After mounting the scope and zeroing it at 100 yards I fired one shot, moved the crosshairs 60 clicks right (one revolution of the knob) and fired another round. I then moved 60 clicks down and fired one round and then moved 60 clicks left and fired one round and then 60 clicks up and fired a round. The target reflected a square set of holes equally distant. The upper, left hole was slightly larger because it reflected two shots. I repeated this process and only had one shot that didn’t at least touch the other. This is very good news because it indicated that the scope repeats. I could have done the same exercise with the scope on a vise looking at a distant target but the non firing exercise wouldn’t have reflected the scopes ability to resist the effects of recoil, a big factor in repeatability. The only down side of this was that the square should have been 7.5 inches square and it was 8.5 inches. To the average varmint hunter or short range target shooter, this isn’t a big deal. For the long range shooter who moves the scope 38 or so minutes of angle to go from 200 yards to 1,000 yards, it’s a fairly big deal since the error accumulates. Having said all that, the Alpen Apex is a remarkable scope for under $400 MSRP. Few if any scopes I’ve ever tested in that price range come close to that kind of repeatability. If

the scope had a better method of getting back to original zero and a better way to keep track of movements, I would consider it as a candidate for use in long range competition. For short range shooting like Rimfire Metallic Silhouette and Steel Challenge shooting, it would work great. For the varmint hunter who rarely makes adjustments of more than six or seven minutes of angle, it would certainly be an excellent choice. Overall, the Apex is a lot of scope for the money. It’s bright, sharp, repeatable, waterproof, and has a lifetime warranty. For more information on Alpen riflescopes and other optical products, go to alpenoptics.com.

AROUND THE STATE North Carolina receives $545 million from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act TIMES STAFF REPORT RALEIGH — Gov. Bev Perdue has announced that North Carolina is receiving $545 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for further development of the Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor, a nearly 500-mile route that will allow trains to travel between Charlotte and Washington, D.C. at top speeds of up to 90-110 miles per hour and an average speed of 86 mph. “Building this highspeed rail corridor will put our people to work on critical infrastructure projects and boost local economies in North Carolina,” said Gov. Perdue. “This is a huge leap toward making high-speed rail in North Carolina a reality.” Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson announced the funding award today during a ceremony at the newly renovated Durham train station. The project is expected to create or maintain 4,800 private sector jobs in North Carolina and provide environmental and energy benefits through reduced congestion and improved air quality. “Every dollar we spend on high speed rail is an investment in job creation and in cleaning the air we all breathe,” said U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “Building high speed rail will put people in North Carolina to work right away, lay the foundation for long
