Preventive care a priority in health care reform bill BY ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer
so glad to have been a part of this year’s campaign and privileged to be able to serve as campaign chair.” United Way of Davidson County President Lee Jessup cited Walker’s enthusiasm as a positive force in achieving what the agency did this year. “Josef is the kind of individual that is both inspiring and a pleasure to be around,” Jessup said. “His positive attitude rubbed off on the board of directors and the staff. With his wit, humor and compassion, he made us all want
The new health care reform bill will give all Americans free preventive care as part of its goal to make health care more affordable across the board and to save the national health care system money in the long run. The bill, also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, requires all new private health insurance plans to eliminate copayments for preventive care and exempt preventive services from deductibles. This will go into effect six months after the bill is approved and will apply to all insurance plans in 2018. Starting Jan. 1, 2011, Medicare must eliminate such preventive care copays and deductibles. “We want to encourage preventive care,” said Hugh Holliman, North Carolina representative. “If people go to their doctors regularly to get checkups, then they can deal with things before they become a critical illness.” Preventive care includes regular checkups from a primary care doctor as well as age-appropriate screenings such as mammograms. Screening for genetic conditions, such as heart disease and depression, will also be covered according to an individual’s family his-

Champions of Advocacy United Way honors donors to 2009-10 campaign BY LISA WALL Editor
The United Way of Davidson County held it’s annual awards banquet Tuesday at Davidson County Community College to honor donors and volunteers from its 200910 campaign. Despite the recession and historic unemployment rates, the campaign raised more than $1.7 million toward its $2 million goal, in support of 31 community assistance programs throughout the county. Campaign Chair Josef Walker says the decision to remain consistent with the goal of

Walker still considers the campaign year a victory. “Anytime someone has done all that they can do and given all they can, that, in my book and by any definition, is success,” he said. “It warms my heart to think of all the families whose lives have certainly been enriched because of donor’s generosity. Soldier conveys Iraq experience BY ELIOT DUKE Staff Writer
Thomasville Lions Club hosted a very special visitor Thursday afternoon, a person who saw firsthand how the United States fought and struggled to bring peace and order to Iraq. Lt. Col. Mac Grimes, son of city councilman Neal Grimes and a Thomasville High School graduate, spoke during a luncheon for Lions Club members at Big Game Safari Steakhouse about the trials and tribulations his brigade faced during his year and half serving in Iraq. Grimes, a national guardsman who commanded 750 soldiers
before returning in January, presented personal photos, diagrams and maps of the region he and his fellow soldiers patrolled and interacted in while trying to restore and maintain luxuries most Americans take for granted. Grimes also fielded questions from those in attendance about his experiences. “There’s a lot of normalcy that has returned to the country,” Lt. Col. Mac Grimes said. “You don’t have the daily explosions and run and gun battles. People don’t want to live like that. They want a secure homeland. They want to live in peace and prosperity, and trying to jump-start their economy is an important part of the work we’re

doing.” Mac Grimes described Iraq as a mostly rural country with varying terrain and an extensive canal network. Palm groves provided insurgents with cover for complex attacks as trafficability in the country is limited. Citizens only have about 12 hours of electricity a day and running water is one of the country’s main issues. Iraqi families are very close knit and many live in the country, growing food and raising livestock. As U.S. forces begin leaving the country, Grimes said Al-Qaeda is trying to re-emerge only to find resistance

Members of the North Carolina Campers On Missions, a group of Christian campers who are involved in a number of service-oriented projects, helped sort and inventory donated items for Baptist Children’s Homes’ “Food Roundup in 2009.
Children’s Homes hopes to rally with food drive TIMES STAFF REPORT
Providing for the boys and girls living at Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina’s (BCH) Mills Home in Thomasville, as well as its additional statewide locations, is no small task. Each year, the residential child care agency asks community friends to participate in the “Food Roundup to help meet children’s daily needs. After 2009’s food drive saw a drop in total support, BCH is hopeful friends will rally for this year’s efforts. “Last year, churches, businesses and individuals gave it their all during a time when economic struggles made giving difficult, says BCH president Michael C. Blackwell. “We are thankful for the sacrificial efforts of so many in the midst of these challenges. Blackwell says the Children’s Homes, like any business or organization, has not been immune to challenging economic conditions. The nonprofit agency has seen its charitable giving dip during the past year. “It’s a trickle down effect for us, Blackwell explained. “As a nonprofit, our life’s blood is the sup-
port we receive from people who desire to make a difference in children’s lives. With many of them affected by the economy they have less to give. As a result, this year’s Food Roundup is crucial. BCH depends on the Food Roundup to offset the immense food costs to provide nearly 725,000 meals and snacks to children and developmentally disabled adult residents each year. In 2009, Food Roundup totals were down more than $100,000 from the previous year. BCH is setting a 2010 goal to collect $350,000 in nonperishable food items, paper products and gift cards throughout the month of April. “The Food Roundup is a tremendous opportunity to help children and anyone can participate, Blackwell says. “Businesses can place collection boxes in their lobbies. In some churches every family takes a box home and returns it filled with food. Others have donated hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards. It’s a simple concept that makes a huge impact. BCH is asking anyone who is interested to collect throughout the month of April. State-

The rules of chocolate BY BILL HILL Guest Columnist
Well , since I have retired my sister said the only thing she can see was the back of my head. I am constantly on my computer. “Well, we all need a hobby. I went to this web site called EASTER HUMOR .COM. Uncle Bill, began to think and act like the character, Forest Gump--Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. I am going to share with you THE RULES OF CHOCOLATE! If you get melted chocolate all over your hands, you’re eating too slowly. Chocolate-covered raisins, cherries, orange slices and strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want. The Problem: How to get two pounds of chocolate home from the store in a hot car. The Solution : Eat it in the parking lot. Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It’ll take the edge off your appetite and you’ll eat less. A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Isn’t that handy? If you can’t eat all of your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer. But if you can’t eat all the chocolate, what’s
wrong with you? If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on the top of the frig. Calories are afraid of heights, and they will jump out of the chocolate to protect themselves. Money talks. Chocolate sings. Chocolate has may preservatives. Preservatives. make you look younger. Why is there no such organization as Chocoholics Anonymous? Because no none wants to quit. Put the “eat chocolate at the top or your list to do things to do today. That way, at the least you’ll get one thing done. Chocolate is a health food. Chocolate is derived from cacao beans. Beans = vegetable = protein. Sugar is derived either from sugar beets or cane, both vegetables. And, of course, the milk/cream is a dairy. So eat more chocolate to meet the dietary requirements for daily vegetables and dairy intake. Well, with all this being said---I am going to the front porch act like Forest Gump and get me a snickers bar and enjoy life! “ I never know what I am going to get Uncle Bill says, bye for now ,see you soon! Happy Easter, everyone! Guest Columnist Bill Hill, RN, can be reached at billyunclebill@aol.com.

Masters of distraction VIEWPOINT
DAVID HARSANYI Syndicated Columnist The mob is furious. And while it hollers about “killing” bills, Republicans stoke the fury by calling on citizens to “target” races in “battleground” states. Get it? “Target.” The violent intentions are palpable. Most Americans abhor violence, and no serious person has offered excuses or rationalized the actions of the smattering of loons who have threatened politicians who voted for health care reform. But this campaign of distraction mounted by Democrats meaning to smear millions of Americans involved in legitimate political expression is as transparent as it is distasteful. The narrative: Fearful underdog Democrats (true if you ignore their notable majorities in both houses of Congress and control of the presidency) are fending off hordes of ferocious, irrational detractors to do what’s right. Democrats insist Republicans must condemn — over and over — this imaginary rise of widespread radicalism. In doing so, they implicitly are accusing Republicans of controlling the aforementioned radicals. Other Democrats, such as House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, went so far as to claim that Republicans are “aiding and abetting terrorism” against Democrats. For those grappling with history, here’s what a “mob” looks like: furious citizens raiding the Bastille, stabbing and decapitating its governor, Marquis Bernard-Rene de Launay, and placing his head on a pike to parade around Paris streets to cheering crowds. Or, to put it in more contemporary terms, think anti-capitalist, stone-throwing, Starbucks-hating, economic-justice thugs. Or perhaps radical environmentalists who burn down
housing projects and research facilities for Mother Earth. For a domestic terrorist, you won’t need to go farther than your local Chicago university to spot a Weatherman — sorry, Weatherperson. And one would think that with all the threats politicians get every year, they would be more serious about whom they accuse. Rep. Russ Carnahan, for instance, claims that a coffin was displayed near his home, which I will grant would be awfully intimidating — unless, of course, it turned out that the coffin was used in a peaceful political candlelight prayer vigil, as it was. (Go to Google for pictures.) Maybe Carnahan confused prayer candles for torches. We also heard terrible (third-hand and unsubstantiated) reports of folks spitting out N-words and F-words at representatives walking through Washington protests. Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened. It happens all the time. “I’ve received threats since I assumed elected office, not only because of my position but also because I’m Jewish,” said House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, who had a bullet shot through his office Monday. “I’ve never blamed anyone in this body for that, period.” Democrats claim that the “mischaracterizing” of the substance and motives of their health reform legislation generates angry and violent reaction. Well, I suppose that’s subjective. There is a strong case to be made that the Republican characterization of Obamacare is far closer to reality than the one offered by Democrats. The real problem is that tea partyers represent the means of obstruction. They must be discredited, first as robotic foot soldiers of the insurance companies and then as out-of-control and potentially violent mobs. Neither is true. Times’ stories and Palm Sunday THIS-N-THATS
LARRY MURDOCK Guest Columnist Last June, I wrote about a wild duck sitting on eggs under an azalea bush in our front yard. We took extra precaution not to scare her away. My son, Jerry, found a black snake in the nest and threw it out. So we placed a grass “rope” around the nest and sprinkled sulfur on the ground around the nest. Either, sulfur or the rope was supposed irritate the snake’s skin and keep snakes away from the nest. We enjoyed watching her and her ducklings. Would you believe that last week there were two ducks in our front yard near the nesting spot? They were seen in the area for several days, but not within the last week or so. We suspect that she has built a nest and is in the process of laying eggs. We were told by those who are familiar with wild ducks that they would return to old nesting places. ••• Some people will do anything for a vote. An article in the Monday, March 15 edition of the Greensboro News & Record had a short story about Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page who is seeking re-election. I quote a portion of the News & Record story: “Rockingham Sheriff Sam Page has volunteered to judge a chili contest, ride a motorcycle and get dunked in a water booth, all for charity. But he has never “scooped poop” for a good cause. Page offered to be the “clean-up”

reverse side of the obituary, it read: “Neat Appearing young man over 25 for special work, willing to start for $18 per week. Labor was cheap, love to know what year that was. ••• Vice-President Joe Biden. What can I say? “Shame on you, keep your mouth shut or be sure there is no camera or recording device close by.” ••• Tomorrow is Palm Sunday. A Christian moveable feast, or a holy day which always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday.” The feast commemorates an event mentioned by all four Gospels, the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his Passion. It is also called Passion Sunday or Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. In Christianity, a moveable feast or movable feast is a holy day — a feast day or a fast day — whose date is not fixed to a particular day of the calendar year but moves in response to the date of Easter. ••• The Procession of the Cross will be held on Good Friday, April 2 at 11 a.m., beginning at Memorial United Methodist Church and ending at Brown New Calvary Church on Doak Street. As is tradition, stops will be made along the route for reading of scripture and prayer. Bus transportation will be provided back to Memorial United Methodist Church for those who need it. ••• Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God. Something to reflect on during this Lenten Season. Guest Columnist Larry Murdock can be reached at larry.murdock@hotmail.com.

For those who didn’t get to read the article. Ms. Litwin was the first Miss Thomasville in 1937. Back in those days the crown was made of paper. Recently, this was corrected when she received her jeweled crown. What a great day that must have been for Mrs. Litwin who is now a resident at Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center. ••• I also enjoyed Thursday’s Times’ story entitled, “Living History.” On Wednesday, Fair Grove second graders put on the second annual wax museum presentation of historic figures. The students had spent six weeks prior to the “Wax Museum” researching a historic figure or their choice. I must say that the photograph of Krista Stillwell portraying Lucille Ball bore a true resemblance to “Lucy.” ••• A lady passed me a combination “old news article and obituary” at church several weeks ago. The obit dated April 25, year unknown, announced the death of David T. At that time Main Street Methodist (now Memorial United Methodist Church) was located on East Main near Commerce Street. I found a classified ad on the

Name change reects Carolina Cancer Services’ range of patient care BY ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer
The former Davidson County Cancer Services changed its name to Carolina Cancer Services in February. The original name — which the organization has had since its beginning in 1996 — limited the center’s services to patients in Davidson County. And while Carolina Cancer Services will continue to serve County residents, the new name allows the group to expand its reach. “Our focus is still very much on the people of Davidson County, and we don’t want to go away from that, said Caron Myers, executive director of Carolina Cancer Services. “This will now allow us to serve the people in the surrounding areas as well. Because cities have moved and shifted over time, changing with increases in population, some city limits have ex-
panded outside Davidson County lines. Some Thomasville residents, for example, actually live in Randolph County, and parts of High Point stretch into Guilford County. “All of those things considered, we knew that we had to also help the people that are in the fringe area of the county, Myers said. “We eliminated the county line so we could help everybody. Since the name change, Carolina Cancer Services has received calls from people in Guilford County and Rowan County asking for assistance. And because the organization is one of only 54 agencies nationwide, the expansion allowed by the name change will help North Carolina citizens, Myers said. “What we do is very unique in that we raise money to help take care of people who have cancer and can’t afford their bills, she said. “The need is ever-growing – cancer is not going away.
FROM PAGE A1 CARE From page A1 tory. Abortion will not be covered. The services considered preventive health and therefore exempt from a copay are derived from the recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. The bill also calls for an office to put recommendations together on women’s health preventive services, according to U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan’s (D-N.C.) office. “Free preventive care will help everyone be healthier, said Stephanie Allen, communications director for Hagan. “Beyond the cost factor, helping people prevent illness before it gets serious will help the overall health. But the costs factor still remains an important plug in the preventive care provision. According to Hagan’s office, helping to reduce the cost
of health care was one of the main reasons for the push for preventive care. The idea is to encourage people to seek health care before it becomes costly. And with more people in the health insurance system — whether paying for it themselves or getting financial aid from the government — the system itself will be saving costs long-term, Allen said. “Now there’s going to be so many more people that actually have coverage, she said. “People’s premiums have been exploding. The idea behind this health care bill is that will stop. Holliman said that, even though he wasn’t sure whether or not the elimination of preventive care copays would cause hikes in other fees, he still thought the overall push for preventive care was important. “We don’t have a fiscal note on that to say it helps us or it hurts us,
he said. “My own opinion is that’s one of the things we want to do, is take road blocks away for why people wouldn’t go to the doctor. If one of those road blocks is they would have to spend $25 in copays, if we could take that way and save $1,000, that makes sense. He continues to describe the reasons he needed Triad’s help “I was so weak, I couldn’t turn, couldn’t stand, couldn’t care for myself and I felt it was such a burden on my wife to physically lift and maneuver me... I needed real help if I were going to get better. Mr. Fitzgerald happily speaks of his recovery at Triad, but more eagerly shares that he can’t wait to get back home and has no plans to leave there again. Tearfully he shared, “I know I would not be able to go home without what they have done for me and for that, I am grateful. When asked if he’s return to Triad if the need arose, he warmly replies, “yeah, I’d trust them with my care again.

Understanding the value of true friendship KEEPING THE FAITH
DOUG CREAMER Guest Columnist
In the last month I have been dealing with some difficult issues at church. There have been some changes that have required each of the members of our congregation to step it up. The immediate future is becoming clearer and even though we haven’t figured it all out yet, there is a sense of hope. I believe that no matter what ultimately happens it will all be in God’s hands, and that is the
best place for us to be. Throughout this whole time, I have turned to some good friends and family for advice. I have to admit that each person has listened patiently and given me wisdom and guidance. Through their help and understanding I have found the faith and the courage to take the steps and make the decisions that were required of me. Through their encouragement I have found faith not only in God but in myself. During this time I have been very thankful for these friends who have helped and prayed for me. Recently, I caught up with a friend that I haven’t seen for several years. The friendship hadn’t waned because of distance or time. After we parted I wondered why he had spent so much time with me. The answer was obvious, because we had invested
so much into each other. We are friends and we both care deeply about each other and our mutual faith in God. I have recently reconnected with several good friends. I caught myself wondering why these men would want to reconnect with me. The answer was simple. The connection had never been broken. Even though we haven’t spoken in a while, the interest and concern for each other is real and legitimate. We are friends because we have been there for each other in the good times and the bad times. I work hard to maintain my friendships. Every summer I try to reconnect with old friends. We meet for breakfast or lunch or just catch up on the phone. My friends know that I will be there for them and I know that they will be there for me. Recently, a friend went
through a very dark time in his life and we stayed in contact with each other quite often through that very difficult time. Because of that, I know that we have a friendship that will last a lifetime. The Biblical David and Jonathan had a very close friendship. Jonathan stood up for David even against his own father. The scriptures tell us that Jonathan knew that David would someday become King of Israel even though Jonathan was the rightful heir. Jonathan wasn’t jealous of David; in fact, I believe if Jonathan had lived, he would have been one of David’s closest mighty men of valor. Jonathan was David’s friend and he wanted the best for him because that is what friends want for each other. Jesus was close to his 12 disciples. The scriptures reveal that Jesus was closer and more
intimate with a few of the disciples. The Bible tells us that one of his followers was called “the disciple Jesus loved.” It’s natural to become intimate and closer with some friends over others. You reach a deeper connection based on openness and shared experiences. Jesus, like us, drew closer and built strong friendships that were based on love and devotion to one another. The Bible teaches us that we are brothers and sisters in the faith. I am lucky because I am close to my brother and two sisters. Our relationships are not perfect, but we are there for each other. We care about each other and want the best for each other. In God’s family it should be the same way. We should be there to support and encourage each other as we endeavor to walk out our faith. There will always
be rough patches, but we are family and we should be there for each other. I want to encourage you to take the risk and invest in others. Building friendships takes time and effort, but it’s time well spent. A friend will stand beside you. A friend will believe the best about you. A friend will not give up on you. We all need friends and we all need to be friends to others. You never know when your hour of need will arise, but it will. It is comforting to know that no matter what you have to endure, you will not have to endure it alone as long as you have friends. Doug Creamer teaches Marketing at East Davidson High School. Greenwood Baptist Church will present an Easter drama entitled, ‘The Witness’ today and Sunday at 6 p.m.
Greenwood Baptist Church to present ‘The Witness’ Easter drama TIMES STAFF REPORT “I’ll be your witness Lord, your witness Lord, your witness till the end.” Those are the words sang by Brad Livengood, who will portray Simon Peter, at Greenwood Baptist Church in Thomasville today and Sunday, March at 6 p.m. On both evenings, Greenwood will present the musical/drama “The Witness.” Joining Livengood will be a total of 37 cast members under the director of Joe Hedrick, formerly with the local quartet The Father’s Four. “The Witness” is the story of Christ as told by Peter. Hedrick says “this is a musical that I sang as a teenager many years ago, and when I took on this project it was the first thing that came to my mind. It has everything, times of laughter and times of tears, but
most of all the wonderful story of Christ’s love and how he died for our sins” Aside from those performing on stage, countless others have worked diligently sewing costumes, building sets, painting scenery, and editing video. This has really turned into a church wide effort and has brought a lot of people together for a common goal. The goal of reaching the community for Christ. Hedrick adds “We would love to see our sanctuary full on those
two nights. Not to honor us, but to honor Christ and hopefully reach lost souls within our community” The Greenwood congregation wishes to invite those within the Thomasville community and encourages them to leave the building with the same desire as Peter, “to be a Witness till the end.” Greenwood Baptist Church is located at 1010 Lexington Ave. in Thomasville. BY ZACH KEPLEY Sports Editor The final score read 15-2 in Friday’s Central Carolina Conference tilt between Central Davidson and Thomasville, but the game was actually much closer than the score indicates. After four innings it was only 3-1 Spartans, but 12 runs over the final three frames helped the conference favorites roll on at historic Finch Field. “We have been looking for bright spots, and the first four innings we played sharp and acted like we knew what we were doing,” said THS coach Brian Kennedy. “People were doing great things, but we struggled hitting and couldn’t put it all together today.” Central, who banged out 19 hits for the day, scratched for two runs in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Cody Beck and single from Ethan Conrad. Beck pitched a complete-game four-hitter striking out 10, but did allow the Bulldogs (2-4) a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sam Everhart reached on an infield single, then advanced to second on a throwing error. Beck, possibly having trouble with his footing on the

‘New’ season brings new look for Heels BY BRIANA GORMAN Durham Herald Sun
BY ZACH KEPLEY Sports Editor There was very little the Thomasville Lady Bulldogs had to be concerned with Thursday evening, running away with a 7-1 victory over once Yadkin Valley conference rival South Davidson. Heather Smith recorded a hat trick with three goals, leading THS to a 23 record on the year. “We are athletic and skilled in the positions we need to be, but we are young and inexperienced at other positions,” said head coach Huey Turner. Thomasville appeared to be more skilled at almost every position, controlling tempo and possession throughout. The Lady Bulldogs were all over the goal in the first 20 minutes, but had nothing to show for. Frustration began to build for Turner, but the tide would start turning

CHAPEL HILL — When North Carolina was announced as part of the NIT field, despite it’s 16-16 overall record, the Tar Heels said they looked at the postseason tournament as a fresh start. Who knew that fresh start would carry them to another Final Four? Even though it might not be the NCAA Tournament Final Four, getting to play in Madison Square Garden in New York City to end the year will at least help the Tar Heels ease the disappointment of their worst season since 2002-03. Make no mistake, UNC would have much rather been in the NCAA Tournament, no matter the seed, but stringing together three consecutive wins since December has given the Tar Heels back some confidence that they lacked while going 5-11 in the ACC. The competition might not be as strong in the NIT — William Mary, Mississippi State and UAB are not exactly marquee basketball programs — but there is no denying the Tar Heels have played better the past three games. And part of that reason is UNC is finally making some shots. Coach Roy Williams has frequently said things look better when the ball is going in the basket, and he could not be more right. UNC struggled to score at times during

SPORTS At Ledford High School, where I took biology, I listened carefully and never heard any reference to sap rising in human beings. There were references to sap rising in trees and numerous mentions of glandular secretions. Apparently, we experience glandular secretions rather than rising sap. This time of year, my sap is rising or my glands are secreting. It’s time to get out and fish again and I’m getting ready. I mentioned in a recent article, while cold winds blew and snow lay in piles that it was time to spool reels and clean out tackle bags, but now it’s time to get the boat ready. Boats are like women, if you don’t pay them enough attention, they’ll make you suffer. Every year I see springtime fishermen at the boat ramp with dead batteries, gunked up carburetors, or smoking wheel bearings. No one wants to work on a boat during a fishing trip, so it’s best to do the work ahead of time. Once you’ve done everything on the list, take the boat out and check performance. If there’s a problem, you need to get in line for service now. This is the busiest time of the year at the boat dealers and mechanics. The motor is the most complex system on the average boat and we’ll start there. You must change the oil in the foot of your outboard at least once a year. If you have an encounter with fishing line, you should do it at the end of the next trip. Fishing line will cut the seal around the prop shaft and allow water to fill the lower unit. This will result in a catastrophic repair bill if you don’t catch it in time.
OFF THE PORCH
DICK JONES Outdoor Columnist If you drain the lower unit and see milky looking oil, you have a leaking seal and it requires immediate repairs. Water provides no lubrication and can wear out the gears in one trip. Left in the unit when not in use, it’ll rust the shafts and bearings causing as much damage. You have to fix it, now. With two stroke motors, especially older models, it’s a good idea to change plugs. Two stroke engines are hard on plugs and plugs are cheap to replace. Why take a chance? Modern fuel injected two strokes don’t require as much attention this way since mixtures are more controlled but boats with carburetors’ often run with less than ideal fuel/air mixtures which fouls plugs. Inspect the prop and the shift and throttle linkage. Look at the fuel line and wiring for damage from weather or use. Grease the steering and tilt pivot points. I spray my motor with WD40 both under the cowl and outside to keep condensation down and the motor looking good. A regular dose of WD40 keeps rust away in all but the most hostile environments. The condition of your steering cable is of utmost importance. Numerous boaters have
died from being thrown from a boat when the steering cable failed. When the cable fails, the boat makes an abrupt, full lock, right turn which throws the boater out and the boat circles around and runs over him. It happens every year. Make sure that cable is in good condition. Also make sure you lubricate the exposed part of the cable. Turn the cable all the way to the right to extend the steering arm and use light grease on the shaft. If there is crud on the shaft, use WD40 to clean it and reapply grease. Electricity and water are natural enemies. It’s important to check all your electrical connections every year from the battery terminals to the connections under the instrument panel. Don’t forget to check the running lights, horn, and bilge pump for operation. If you have depth finders, radios, and chart plotters, check them out now or on a spring shake down trip once you’ve finished your maintenance check. Check out the hull, looking for cracks or damage that could allow water to soak into the foam flotation and weigh the boat down. Many boats today have little or no wood in them but water soaking into the foam will weigh the boat down and have serious adverse effects on performance. Now is a good time to clean out all the storage and get stuff you don’t need out of the boat. A light boat is a fast boat that planes up quickly. Finally, go over the trailer with a fine tooth comb. It’s hard to imagine mechanical and electrical components having a tougher job than those on a boat trailer. Often, the trailer is towed for miles in summer heat and then doused in cold water when the boat

And it has not just been the easy shots falling, but players are finally making some plays. Senior Deon Thompson scored 20 points in the first-round win over William Mary, while Tyler Zeller added 13, including a key steal and dunk at the end of the game. Against Mississippi State junior Will Graves made a 3 with 31 seconds remaining to give UNC the lead and then sophomore

Larry Drew II made a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Tar Heels the victory. Saturday, Thompson had his first double-double since the end of December and Drew, Dexter Strickland and Marcus Ginyard combined to make six consecutive free throws in the final 21 seconds. The players insist they never gave up on the season, even though it looked like it at times, and now they are playing like they never want the season to end. The Tar Heels seemed to have finally found the sense of urgency that has lacked most of the year. “You have to have it now or our season is over,” Drew said before the UAB game. “If we lose we are done and nobody wants to be done. Everybody wants to still play.”

SPORTS DRILL From page B1 a minute later. Star midfielder Alex Solis, created with her skills for the initial tally. She worked herself open on the left wing and sent a ball across the frame to Emily Styers, who finished on the backside with a flick of the foot. The shield that seemed to be blocking the goal had been lifted, and THS started firing away with greater success. Liz Cruz accounted for the second goal three minutes later, drawing a foul and lifting a direct kick well outside of the box into the corner of the net. Solis then grabbed a score off a feed from Smith, quickly making it 3-0. South’s defense barely had enough time to catch its breath, before Thomasville was ramming another goal in the net. This time, Smith picked up a loose ball in the middle, turned, and ripped a shot for her first marker. Styers ended the 5-0 first half for the Lady Bulldogs on a rare play. She did one of her patented flip throw-ins from the wing that went through everyone untouched and into the goal. Turner, who once coached the Wildcats, expressed his appreciation to the coaches now leading South. He said they have not had stabil-

Second half, Smith got a pair of goals to give THS a 7-0 lead. South got its lone goal on such a bizarre play, that the referee is not
even sure he made the correct call. Asia Davenport substituted in goal, as Turner gave everyone a chance to play. She scooped up a ball and punted it high in the air. Her punt did not go anywhere, though, coming right back down to her where she caught it. The official ruled it a penalty, and the Wildcats scored on the penalty kick.

BOAT From page B2 is unloaded. The rapid temperature change is hard on all the components especially bearings and lights. Check to see that all bolts are tight, check the condition of the hitch, and check wiring connections and lights. Look for excessive rust or corrosion. Check springs and shackles for damage or looseness. Give the tires a good look for uneven wear and bring them up to proper pressure. It’s a good idea to lift each wheel with a jack and check the bearings for smoothness and end play. There should be just a slight bump when you flex the wheel with the wheel off the ground. If there’s no play, the bearings will wear prematurely; too much play indicates excessive wear. Pulling and repacking the bearings is a good idea if you really travel a lot of miles. I generally do it about every other year and I haul in excess of 5,000 miles a year. The bearing system is about the same setup as older cars had and they would go 30,000 miles between repacking the wheel bearings, but they didn’t get submerged in a river or lake while hot at the end of every trip. Bearing Buddies or similar products are a great idea. They don’t mean you never have to repack your wheel bearings but they do one thing that’s a great benefit. They put the grease in the wheel under a slight amount of pressure with the spring loading. This means that, if a seal goes bad, the excess grease will be pushed out and noticing the bad seal will be easier. The pressure also means that when you back the hot bearings into the water, and that
working on the boat is good for sap production.
big temperature change happens, no water can come into the bearing area because it’s pressurized from the inside. If all this seems like a lot of trouble, consider how much trouble it is to have to fix a bad bearing on the side of the highway or have a boat motor that won’t crank when you’re six miles down the river. A little prevention goes a long way. Besides, spending a nice spring afternoon

SPORTS FADE From page B1 wet hill, then tossed two wild pitches that brought Everhart all the way around. Central got the run back the next inning, but Thomasville hung tough, keeping it a 3-1 game through four complete. “We played them tough through four and the defense really stepped up,” said Kennedy. The fifth inning brought an end to the good play, as Central started to pepper hits all over the field and the Bulldogs started making errors. CDHS put a four-spot up in the fifth off Thomasville starter Rashaun Anderson, and had three
more for reliever Steven Stanley in the sixth to make it 10-1. After Beck fanned the side in the bottom half, Central greeted reliever Troy Butler with their biggest inning, plating five runs to lead 15-1. “We were looking good, but the last three innings we really showed our youth and inexperience,” said Kennedy. “There were a lot of mental errors that went along with the actual errors we made. We are still working and it is still a process for us. If we could just make up for some of the mental stuff, we can play well.” Conrad led Central with a 4-for-4 effort and two RBIs. Thomasville got its four hits from four different players.

Breast Enlargement Now Less Painful and A Great Time of Year To Do It Breast augmentation has, again, become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. The silicon gel breast implant “fiasco” has faded (where it belongs,) and besides, we use saline implants most of the time anyway. Let’s talk about breast enlargement. When I am seeing a patient thinking of enlarging her breasts, the biggest reason she hasn’t already had the operation is usually the fear of pain. Now, pain is always an important reason. But, we have a great gadget to help with pain. The ON-Q Pain pump has been a true blessing for many of the painful operations we do. For instance, if you are considering a tummy tuck, we use it here too. This pump is like blowing up a balloon, except we use numbing medications (like
lidocaine which a dentist might use to numb your teeth.) The numbing fluid is slowly passed through a small tube that we insert next to your breast implant. The implant is bathed in the lidocaine for TWO DAYS. WOW! The worst of the pain occurs in the first two days, so you get help during the most painful time. We still give you narcotics, but narcotics sometime have side effects like nausea and constipation that obviously are less if you need less, and use less. Fantastic. So, what are you waiting for? Bathing suit season is coming soon. Having your surgery now is a good idea. The reason is that we are probably going to place the implant under the pectoralis (chest-come on, you can learn some anatomy too)
muscle. The thing about putting implants there is that it takes time for the pectoralis to stretch out. We need this stretching over weeks to months to allow the implant to lower itself into a correct position behind your breast. OK, what’s your excuse now? We can help you with the pain, and NOW is a great time to have breast augmentation. Get the body balance you want. I tell my patients we are in the Happy Business. And it’s true. Our breast enlargement patients are some of our happiest! Virgil V. Willard, II, MD

Artist visits Thomasville Woman’s Club TIMES STAFF REPORT
On March 9, the Woman’s Club of Thomasville conducted its monthly meeting with Carolyn Ray as its guest speaker. Ray, an artist, has visited the club for the Art’s Department meeting in the past. This year, Ray gave a different presentation centered on birds, which depicted her interest in natural themes. She brought in pictures of birds and magazines, displayed on a table for the club members to view, as well as a carved dove. Her program centered on information about birds in her yard – such as their migration patterns - and on the care of birdfeeders – such as the different types and how to clean them properly. Born in San Diego, Calif., while her father was stationed there in the U.S. Marine Corps, Ray graduated from the nurs-

Dealing with concerns about change
MARILYN TAYLOR Business Columnist
The concerns listed below were identified last week as the “Big 6, according to Pat Zigarmi of the Ken Blanchard Companies: 1. Informational Concerns — What is it about? 2. Personal Concerns — Can I succeed? 3. Implementation Concerns — How is this going to work? 4. Impact Concerns — Is this going to make a difference? 5. Collaboration Concerns — How are people going to work together? 6. Refinement Concerns — How will we make it better? Let’s take each category and identify how it can be addressed. With informational concerns, it’s important to note that people want facts, not fluff. Managers may rush to ‘sell’ the change, thinking that is a necessary step. Most people see through that tactic and know that they are being ‘sold’. The resulting attitude is often resentment — hardly what management was hoping for. Better to give the facts and lay out a solid business case for the change. If it is smart and inevitable — people will get it. Personal concerns include are driven by the proverbial WIIFM that we all carry in our pockets. As we hear about a change, it is natural to question – “What’s In It For Me? Or to wonder: “Am I going to come out OK in this deal? Change-ready managers can help by painting as detailed a picture as
Servpro has change in ownership TIMES STAFF REPORT
SERVPRO of High Point has changed ownership. When fire or water damages occur, commercial and residential property owners have a new ally ready to aid them in their recovery efforts. Owned by Carlos and Lauren Olvera, SERVPRO of High Point has opened its doors for business offering a full line of fire, water and mold cleanup and restoration services to help home and business owners regain control following a loss. “We look forward to providing our customers with the highest level of service and commitment that Servpro Industries, Inc. is nationally recognized for, said Carlos Olvera. In the event of a fire or water damage, SERVPRO of High Point provides 24hour emergency service.
cannot see how to: Work together easily; balance work load; make it fair, then balking or stalling are both natural, if not helpful, responses. Refinement concerns rarely come about if the first three concerns are addressed early on. But if not, the remaining three are sure to surface. People will see ways to make the change even better. When these continuous improvement opportunities are brought to light, how does management respond? “Thanks, we’ve got it covered does little to promote ownership and engagement. The best folks to refine the process are usually the ones doing it. Concerns about change, as Par Zigarmi reminds us, are simply unanswered questions. Therefore, they are not the enemy. The real enemy is apathy. Contact marilyn@ taylortrain.com to provide professional support services in leading organizational and personal change. possible. When people don’t have details they may: Make them up; ask others wheat they’ve heard; or worry silently None of these options are particularly useful for organizational health, but count on them to happen. Better to share your vision for the future and own any misgivings you may have. People don’t expect perfection, they do expect honest projections. Implementation concerns come about because it is the job of top management to envision what happens next and the job of middle and first line management to make it happen. Managers may not know how everything is going to work and frankly, don’t want to be bogged down with all the operational details early on. It will be the task of those hearing about the change to make it happen — so the implementation piece is huge. Ownership is key here. Best to take down all the implementation suggestions you can get and park them until you’re ready. Impact concerns are a big part of motivation and morale. If it seems right away that this change is not going to create much impact, you’ll see the smart players quietly backing away. They’ll put their energy into other areas that will bring a bigger payoff. If, on the other hand, they sense that this change will truly impact the organization in a positive way, they’ll rally around it and lead the charge. Collaboration concerns are subtle in the way they are exhibited. People may not come out and ask: “How are we going to work together on this? But if people
