FEMA surveys tornado damage BY ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer With local residents still trying to pick up the pieces of broken homes, representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) came Thursday to assess the damage caused by the March 28 tornados. FEMA visited the Valley Mobile Home Park,
the Chestnut Grove Mobile Home Park and the Countryside Mobile Home Park — the areas hit hardest by the storm — as well as some remote damage sites in Davidson County and High Point. The assessment will determine whether or not local governments will receive federal money to help pay for damage repair and cleanup.
“At the earliest, next week we’ll know if the damage was wide-spread enough to qualify from assistance from FEMA, the small business administration or the state of North Carolina,” said High Point City Manager Strib Boynton, who said he expects to hear from the federal agency by Monday. “If we do not qualify for FEMA assis-
tance, there’s a chance that we could get some assistance from the state.” Though Doug Lowe, director of emergency services for Davidson County, estimated storm damages between $1.5 and $1.7 million, Boynton said it was premature to put numbers on the damage and that he would have a better idea by
next week. Both governments will have to submit a damage estimate to qualify for FEMA funds. Once FEMA concludes its report — a compilation of assessment figures from all of the sites in the region — the agency will pass on its findings to Gov. Bev Perdue. Damage in High Point has affected 649 buildings, according to the city.
About 320 of those were seriously damaged, and 25 were condemned. In Davidson County, about 18 mobile homes were completely destroyed and about 41 were damaged between the various sites. The Associated Press reported six tornados in North Carolina Sunday — the worst of

Thomasville High School is used to sending at least two rising seniors to Governor’s School every summer. This year, two just wasn’t enough. Three THS juniors have been selected to attend Governor’s School and will join 800 other students from around the state in a six-week residential program for intellectually gifted youngsters. Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide residential program in the nation. Juniors Gleb Chupak-
hin, Mary Jasperse and Walker Williams Jr. were selected as three of the top minds at THS and will use the experience to help them get ready for college next year. The top two high school students are normally selected, but names also can be submitted under the proper criteria based on grade point average and percentile scores. Jasperse was picked due to her academic prowess and her selection marks the first time THS has ever sent three students to the school. “This is a prestigious award,” Karen Harris, a THS guidance counselor, said. “They will be inter-
acting and involved with some of the top students in the state. For us, this symbolizes what we’ve always known at Thomasville that we have some of the best and brightest students in the state. We’re excited to have this kind of representation. With this opportunity comes great responsibility.” Chupakhin also received the Oscar Merit scholarship from the American Freedom Association (AFA) for winning a school-wide essay contest on how the United Nations should enforce treaty laws on the seas.

Those close to pastor D.W. Long affectionately call him “Poppy.” As the founding father of several Thomasville churches, it’s easy to see why. On Easter Sunday, “Poppy” will start winding down a career that has spanned more than six decades when he presides over service at the Shepherd’s Inn at 310 Hinkle St. “Never in my life did I think I would accomplish what I have,” Long said. “I have preached all over the United States and have been on 30 radio stations. I can’t say it’s my last service, but we’re getting close.” While his love of preaching still exists, 62 years of speaking some 350 days a year have taken its toll on Long. His voice lacks the stamina of a young man, but the impact Long has left on Thomasville for future generations is time-

Miss Thomasville crusades against childhood obesity
From page 1 those six touched down in High Point. But despite the extent of the damage, no one was killed and the only injuries sustained were minor. “We were blessed, I think, Boynton said. “There was plenty of warning. People were able to take cover. Boynton gave the city crews Easter weekend off of the 12-hour days they had been putting in during the week to clear debris. “I want them to have some time off for rest, he said. “After a while safety gets to be a con-
BY ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer It’s the story line of every little girl’s make-believe — walking sedately in a flowing gown while others place a sparkling crown upon a head of curls. But when Mallory Honeycutt felt the pressure of the crown on her head, it wasn’t in the midst of her own madeup fairy tale. Instead she stood, glowing, as Miss Thomasville 2010. Crowned on Feb. 13, Honeycutt was crowned the 74th Miss Thomasville in a pageant that is the longest-running in the state. She has spent the time since her crowning speaking at events throughout the community and pursuing her pageant platform: childhood obesity. “It’s exciting and a blessing to be able to represent a community that’s dedicated to supporting women like myself in believing and achieving their dreams, said Honeycutt, 21, originally from Salisbury and a senior at UNC-Greensboro. The Miss Thomasville Pageant is a local feeder pageant to the Miss America Pageant organization. Girls crowned Miss Thomasville have the opportunity to compete for Miss North Carolina and ultimately for Miss America. The pageant itself consists of an evening gown competition, fitness and wellness swimsuit competition, a talent competition, and an interview. Each contestant must also have a platform, or a cause she wishes to speak out for if she wins. Winners of the pageant — as well as the first and second runners-up — also are awarded scholarship money. In fact, the Miss America Organization is one of the world’s largest provider of scholarships for young women, giving out more than $45 million last year. But beyond the money aspect, Honeycutt said she has gained a lot from her Miss Thomasville experience. The preparation required for the interview and talent alone meant dedication, as did the time spent working out for the fitness part of the pageant. And throughout the endeavor, the new Miss Thomasville got to know her fellow contestants. “We bond knowing that we’re going through the experience together, she said. “It is an individual sport, nonetheless, but to be among other young women who have similar dreams and visions as you do is amazing. On a more sophisticated level, Honeycutt said all of her preparation boiled down to gaining self-confidence. “That’s the important part, she said. “It’s not necessarily how everyone else feels but how that young woman feels on the stage. The confidence Honeycutt gains from her experience counts among one of the many nonmonetary benefits of the many Miss Americarelated pageants, says Patricia Carroll, former executive director of the Miss Thomasville Scholarship Pageant. “I saw them grow into so much more mature young women after be-
cern with fatigue. This week, crews mainly focused on cleaning up brush and trees. Volunteer crews came out to cut up the large limbs and brush, and county staff hauled it off. Next week, the crews will start taking away gutters, doors, windows and other large piles of debris that people have dragged to the curbs. “On Monday, the focus will shift to picking up some of the debris that can’t be taken away by contractors, Boynton said. The volunteer effort seen this week has helped cleanup efforts dramatically, Boynton said. About 175 people showed up at the High Point Police Department
volunteer registration site on Thursday alone. People have come from all over the area to help out. “All in all, it’s going very well, Boynton said. “I’m very humbled by the incredible outpouring of volunteers who are helping people clean up their yards and homes from all of the destruction. After the curb-side cleanup concludes next week, Boynton said city staff will return to its normal duties and the rest of the effort will fall mostly on homeowners. “There’s a cleanup for homeowners and those that need to rebuild, he said. “That’s going to take some time. We’ll stay with them as long as it takes.

A singer all her life, she liked the idea of having an outlet to perform. “I love to sing and love to be on stage, she said. “The more I found out about the American Pageant Association, the more I fell in love. After the initial attraction of the performance, the organization’s emphasis on community service hooked the new Miss Thomasville. “I think it’s an important message to get to young women, she said. “That’s actually what one of the points on the Miss America crown stands for — service. Aside from the Miss America Organizationrequired involvement in the Children’s Miracle Network — Honeycutt must raise a minimum of $250 for the organization in order to compete in Miss North Carolina — Miss Thomasville reaches out to the local community. “After seeing the community service that I’ve been able to do and these other young women across the state have been able to do — it has really opened my eyes, Honeycutt said. “It’s not just an on-stage competition. So far, Honeycutt has been to schools throughout the Triad area, reading a book called “The Monster Health Book and talking to children about making healthy decisions. “I have a big passion for nutrition and physical fitness, especially with encouraging children, said Honeycutt, a nursing major at UNC-G. “The epidemic proportion that the nation has reached with regards to obesity, with it being a

disease — something has to be done. Honeycutt’s next step is the Miss North Carolina pageant in June, which she said she is beyond excited for. But in the meantime, she says that she is enjoying her reign as Miss Thomasville. “You never expect to win a title like this, Honeycutt said. “And you’re blessed at having the opportunity. I have a year ahead of me to be able to touch people out in the community.

Big brother on your tail VIEWPOINT
STEVE CHAPMAN Syndicated Columnist Suppose I approached you with a request. I want you to carry a small gadget that will automatically transmit your location to the police, allowing them to track your every movement 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Chances are you would politely decline. Too late. You already accepted. That gadget, you see, is called a cell phone. For years, the cops may have been using it to keep close tabs on you without your knowledge, even if you have done nothing wrong. They don’t have to get a search warrant — which would limit them to situations where they can show some reason to think you’re breaking the law. All they have to do is tell a judge that the information is relevant to a criminal investigation and send a request to your service provider. This does not appear to be an uncommon event. Al Gidari, an attorney for several service providers, told Newsweek they now get “thousands of these requests per month.” Oh, and the data are not limited to your movements today or in the future. The government can also see records of where you’ve been in the past. So if you got skittish and decided to stop packing a wireless communications device, your privacy would still be at risk. You can be vulnerable even if the police have no particular interest in you. Michael Sussmann, another lawyer for service providers, said in 2006 that sometimes, “we get a subpoena for information on one person and then they want all the information on the persons calling or called by them.” These developments explain why a coalition of organizations and companies — including Google, AT&T, the Competitive Enterprise Institute and the American Civil Liberties Union — have joined in asking Congress to drag our privacy laws into the 21st century. They think search warrants should be required before law enforcement can demand this sort of electronic communications information. You might assume unchecked government surveillance of innocent people went
out of style when George W. Bush took his leave. But this is one of those instances that seem designed to show the futility of trying to change policy by changing the party in power. Barack Obama’s Justice Department also insists it should have the authority to conduct such tracking without a warrant. Some judges don’t buy it. A couple of years ago, a federal court in Pennsylvania said the practice was at odds with both federal law and the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, which forbids “unreasonable searches and seizures.” Cell-phone location tracking, the judge concluded, invades the privacy Americans have a right to expect. No kidding: It can reveal if someone is having an affair, visiting a gay bar, attending a militia meeting or tea party event, going to an abortion clinic, seeing a psychiatrist, getting treatment for substance abuse, worshiping at a mosque and any number of other activities some people would rather conceal from a government they do not fully trust. Those on the other side think a warrant requirement would be unreasonable, since a cop doesn’t need court permission to follow you down the street on a hunch. But Northwestern University law professor Albert Alschuler says, “There’s a big difference between watching you all the time, everywhere you go, and watching you pass by.” Police departments will never have enough cops to physically tail you and millions of other people constantly. But the spread of cell phones makes it possible for law enforcement to conduct endless surveillance on a scale that is both vast and intimate. Privacy protections can become meaningless if we don’t adapt them to new inventions. Today, we take it for granted that the FBI can’t listen to our phone conversations without a search warrant. But in 1928, the Supreme Court said the Fourth Amendment did not apply to anyone “who installs in his house a telephone instrument with connecting wires … to project his voice to those quite outside.” Not until 1967 did the court correct that blunder. It ruled that “the Fourth Amendment protects people, not places,” including those things a person “seeks to preserve as private, even in an area accessible to the public.” Maybe it still does. Or maybe not.
Should health care be a right VIEWPOINT
ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer The concept has been drilled into our heads from childhood — the right to practice your own religion, the right to bear arms, even the right to remain silent. Your average sixth-grader could sit down and recite the basic freedoms granted to each citizen of this country. On a humanitarian level, we claim individuals have the right to food, clothing and a place to sleep. Thomas Jefferson said all humans have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And yet the basic definition of what is a right eludes us. In light of the health care reform bill debate, the question of whether or not health care can be mandated by the government has arose. Now, I’m not going to gush about whether or not the bill will help or hurt the American public, mostly because I think the basis of the issue actually lies on a deeper level. Few people will actually stand up and say that uni-
versal health care coverage, on principal, is bad. The numbers ride against that argument on every level. Even the politicians don’t argue that fact — Republicans and Democrats alike have acknowledged that each individual needs health insurance not only for themselves but for the betterment of the nation and the system itself. Where paths diverge is when the government starts to get involved. Supporters of the government-imposed fee for those who refuse to get insured base this mandate on the idea that health care is a universal right. In steps that elusive concept — health care is a right. Of course, health care, in a way, was a right before, it just cost the system thousands of dollars a week to pay for the uninsured who showed up in emergency rooms with a bad case of the flu. The difference here is that the right granted to previously uninsured individuals is an equal opportunity to see primary care doctors and gain access to preventive medicine. Now, I see the logic behind the argument. In order to cut down on the heavy costs incurred by hospitals who treat uninsured patients free of charge, everyone must have health insurance. Why would someone not take it? But if it comes through the government it will, of course, involve paperwork, and if it’s no difference to your pocket book why go through the hassle? So some people will opt out
of the free health insurance, knowing full well that hospitals won’t deny them care and that ultimately the cost won’t fall on them. Enter the government-imposed fee. With a punishment in place, it’s much more likely that those who might skip out on governmental paperwork will avoid the financial hit and take the insurance, saving the system money in the long term. What confuses me is why the term “right” needs to be tossed all over this process. I heard the analogy to speeding from Rep. Mel Watt the other day. If you speed, you get a ticket, which is true. But the right imposed there is not the reckless driver’s right to speed, but other travelers’ right to safety. So is our right health insurance? Or is it not spending ridiculous amounts of money to fund the uninsured? Everyone should receive health care — and everyone does. Putting the right-orwrong argument on the health care reform bill aside, the legislation’s overall purpose is to encourage preventive care among those who before couldn’t access it, as well as to lower costs for not only individuals but the system as a whole. That purpose alone should carry the bill, not an idealized, value-driven use of the word “right.” Staff Writer Erin Wiltgen can be reached at 888-3576 or at newsdesk@tvilletimes.com

Chupakhin’s essay detailed global law on the sea and how the best way to enforce it with respect to piracy, pollution and economic impact. Chupakhin, who would like to an engineer one day, will spend his six weeks at Meredith College in Raleigh. “I didn’t know anything about [the treaty] until I started the essay,” said Chupakhin. “I found out the United States hasn’t ratified it yet and that was surprising to me. It was interesting to see how the UN works and the actual people there work.” Jasperse said she plans on using the experience to help improve her writing skills and explore other facets of writing made available through the Governor’s School curriculum. From page 1 less. From his first church with the saw dust floor to the Church of Tomorrow, Long’s career is filled with stories of success spreading the word of God. Long started his career preaching college prayer meetings in 1945, but he would soon have to leave North Carolina for Italy after being drafted during World War II. Long would spend the next two years overseas, a period of time he says shaped the man he would become. “[Going overseas] really was a blessing for me,” said Long. “Spending time in Italy allowed me to experience some many different things, like seeing where the Pope lived. I felt like I was being groomed for something.” Long returned home in 1947 and began preaching at a small church near the Greensboro airport, where the floor re-

sembled a saw mill and patrons spit tobacco out of side windows. Two years later, Long founded the Gospel Light Baptist Church in Walkertown with nine charter members. By the time he left in 1956, the church had over 200 members and Sunday school averaged 153 children. Last June, Long was invited back for the church’s 60-year anniversary where more than 3,000 people attended. Gospel Light Baptist Church is now the largest church in North and South Carolina. “I’ve only pastured two churches that were started by someone else,” Long said. Following a short stint in Knoxville, Tenn., Long came back to Thomasville in 1957 and helped start Calvary Temple Baptist Church on Blair Street, where he would stay for the next 31 years. In 1991, Long founded Church of Tomorrow at the Day’s Inn. Over the next few years, Long worked tirelessly to find the church a new home. Serendipity even-
tually landed Church of Tomorrow at its home on Oaklawn Drive where pastor Huey Turner and associate pastor Billy Parham continue his work today. Parham can’t remember life without Long’s guidance and said his mentor was a driving force in creating the Shepherd’s Inn, Thomasville’s lone outreach ministry. “[Long] has been my pastor ever since I’ve been in the world,” said Parham. “He has always lived his life like an open book. He means the world to me. Poppy was out walking in the park and saw some people laying in the bushes. He saw there was a need and felt we had to help people with no place to go. [The Shepherd’s Inn] came from D.W. The whole idea and concept.” Sunday’s service at the Shepherd’s Inn starts at 8:30 a.m. Staff Writer Eliot Duke can be reached at 888-3578, or duke@tvilletimes.com.

RELIGION
The expedient route VIEWPOINT
DR. GEORGE JACKSON Religion Columnist After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead in the hill region of Bethany, many once skeptical Jews believed that he was the Son of God. Seemingly all of his miracles won him disciples and increased his fame, but raising a man from the grave after
being dead four days was arguably his greatest miracle. So much so that those loyal to the established Jewish leadership rushed back to the Pharisees to alert them to what Jesus had done. The chief priest called an emergency meeting of the 70 Sanhedrin council members. There was only one item on the agenda, ‘What shall we do about Jesus of Nazareth?’ He was becoming an increasing threat to the status quo and their political and economic strangle hold on the nation. After much debate, the high priest Caiaphas, though vile and degenerate in his heart, spoke into the atmosphere words of Messianic salvation. He said, “You
do not understand that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish.” These cold words of conspiracy triggered the week of passion and ultimately our Savior’s tragic death on Calvary. In our attempts to control situations or manipulate people, we often choose the most expedient route. This route is often selected because it is self-gratifying. Close examination of the expedient route will reveal a road cluttered and crowded with the atrocities of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. The Sanhedrin Council went to great lengths to manufacture Jesus’ ultimate defeat, yet he
warned them of what would happen to the world if they carried out their devious plot. He declared, “If I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me.” Killing Jesus gave his detractors momentary joy, but it gave his disciples a perpetual Savior. Nineteen hundred years later, one of those drawn to that victim of expediency would lead an oppressed people out of a wilderness of disenfranchisement towards the Promised Land of social and economic equality. After assembling more than 250,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in peaceful protest for jobs and freedom in 1963, after winning the Noble Peace Prize
in 1964, after securing the Voter’s Rights Act in 1965, and speaking against the Vietnam War in 1967, the forces of evil wanted to know, “What shall we do about Martin Luther King, Jr.? If we don’t stop him soon, his ‘war on poverty’ will disrupt the status quo and expose our capitalistic greed.” It was expedient to assassinate Dr. King 42 years ago in Memphis, Tenn., the day after he declared, “I’ve been to the mountaintop and I’ve seen the Promised Land.” Killing Dr. King gave his detractors temporary relief, but 15 years later, his supporters would celebrate his birthday as a national holiday. Kind of ironic is it not?
Joseph’s commentary on these pivotal events in history is, “But as for you, you thought evil against me; but God meant if for good, to bring it to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive,” (Gen. 50:20). This Easter Sunday, we remember Christ who got up from the dead and Martin King to whom Jesus promised, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25).

East falls to Central in 8th Spartans tie Eagles at 2-1 in CCC standings BY ZACH KEPLEY Sports Editor East Davidson had the chance to put some pressure on the Central Carolina Conference field Thursday when it had favorite Central Davidson in trouble late in the game, but let the calls by the man in blue behind the plate get in their heads. The Golden Eagles had what would have been the winning run 90 feet away in the fifth inning, but could not scratch for a run, as the game would later go to extra innings. In the top half of the eighth, the Spartans got the leadoff man on and scored twice, leading to a wild 5-3 win. CDHS is tied with East Davidson at 2-1 in the standings. “The kids did not quit,” said East coach Dan Tricarico, whose team fell behind 3-1 before rallying for two in the fifth. “I am proud of them for getting back in the game, but we had an opportunity to put ourselves in the driver’s seat in conference, and we did not take advantage of that.” East starter Keaton Hawks found immediate trouble in the first inning allowing two Spartan runs. The damage could have been more, but he got the final two outs to end the inning. He again found trouble in the second, loading the bases with two outs, but picked off a runner at second for the final out. He settled in after that,

allowing just one more run the final innings of his day before getting relief in the seventh. “First inning the way things started, it looked like it was going to be really rough, but he settled down and did a great job keeping us in the game,” said Tricarico. Central’s Cody Beck (41) found out quickly what the strike zone would be for the day, and worked the corners high and low to strike out seven in the complete-game effort. Tyler Lequire was able to score a run off of him in the fourth when he walked, went to third on a double by Justin Mounts, and came home on a Taylor Warren RBI groundout to short. NEW YORK — One year ago, North Carolina’s Marcus Ginyard was standing at halfcourt at Ford Field in Detroit celebrating a NCAA Tournament championship. But Thursday in Madi-

the Flyers accepted and hoisted their third NIT championship trophy. “It was brutal, absolutely brutal,” Ginyard said. “Yeah it hurts, but you still got to stand out there and congratulate them. They played a great

Duke run built on strong bond BY BRYAN STRICKLAND Durham Herald Sun DURHAM — Like every team that earned a spot in this year’s NCAA Tournament, the Duke Blue Devils don’t want their winding, wonderful journey to end short of Monday’s championship game. The Blue Devils also don’t want it to end after the championship game.
“This team will really be brothers forever. It’s as close a team as I’ve had,” said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose team will continue the journey Saturday against West Virginia in the national semifinals (8:47 p.m., WRAL). “You want great things to happen for people who are great with us. I mean, they’ve been spectacular to coach.

Learning a lesson about love and hate I may have turned a corner in life. As sports fans go, I consider myself pretty passionate. I’ve lost sleep over a Miami Dolphins loss to the wretched J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets and can’t remember how many times a Duke fan has rubbed me the wrong way, causing a heated argument. With 40 on the horizon, I seem to have lost my zest for sports hatred, at least when it comes to college basketball. The thought of Duke University winning anything used to send cold shivers down my spine, regardless of the tournament, but especially the NCAA championship. This is not so anymore. Tonight, I will watch the Blue Devils play West Virginia in the Final Four. My chances of

Final Four city has storied history
Hot fishing in Calabash
There’s an old adage that goes, good fences make good neighbors. Uncle Evander said good neighbors make good neighbors. He was always ready to drop off a mess of catfish or a brace of ducks to his neighbors and he never had neighbor trouble. This past week, we got new neighbors and I have to say they started off on the right foot. Brian and Melissa Liebhardt just moved down from St. Louis, Missouri. Brian’s the Executive chef at Bravo Restaurant at Friendly Center, in Greensboro. We met the Liebhardts last week and I knew we had something in common when Brian told me how much he enjoyed fishing. They told us they planned a fishing trip out of Calabash on Friday. I really knew we’d hit it off when Brian brought us a nice tuna for dinner after his trip. The Liebhardts had a great day in the gulf stream on the Hurricane Fleet’s 77 foot Westwind headboat. With calm, crystal clear 70 degree water under the boat and 70 degree air around them the fish more than cooperated. In fact, Brian reported it was the best offshore trip they’d ever had. He was really impressed with the fishing experience on the Hurricane fleet. “They told us all about how to fish, how far off the bottom the fish were, and everything else we needed to know.

When this paper hits your driveway, Cherie and I will be on our way to our first excursion this year to Weldon, North Carolina. The Halifax County location offers probably the finest fishing opportunity in our state for the next six weeks or so. Our target species will be Hickory shad, a member of the herring family that gets up to almost four pounds and offers great light tackle action. Fishermen are reporting catches of over 100 fish per day with one reporter stating two anglers caught 80 fish in an hour and a half. The bite should improve even more by next week as the water
warms with the great weather predicted. Once the shad have spawned, the stripers will arrive. By later in the month, we can expect good catches of spawning stripers which should last into mid May. This fishery is so good, the North Carolina Wildlife Commission put out a running weekly report. INDIANAPOLIS -— Even before Duke’s team bus passed Lucas Oil Stadium on the way to the hotel Wednesday night, junior guard Nolan Smith caught a glimpse of the massive structure where the Blue Devils will do battle in the Final Four on Saturday. “I actually saw it from the plane,” Smith said. “I just started smiling that we were about to land here for the Final Four. “It hit me then. ... It definitely became real.” While the chance to play in the Final Four is a new experience for Smith and his teammates, regardless of venue, this isn’t the first time the basketball hotbed that is Indianapolis has opened its arms to a group of college basketball players chasing their sport’s ultimate dream. When Butler, located just five miles outside of downtown Indianapolis, and Michigan State tip things off Saturday at 6:07 p.m., followed shortly thereafter by DukeWest Virginia, the city’s sixth Final Four will commence. Smith and his coach both have personal ties to the Final Four in Indy, the site of many a memorable moment in March lore. In 1980, Smith’s father competed in the first Final Four in Indy, helping
Louisville win the title over UCLA. The Final Four returned to town in 1991, a signature year for Duke basketball. “Great, great memories — we won our first national championship there,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “I’ve always felt over the years that Indianapolis is as good a Final Four setting as any. Having it right downtown, Indianapolis is such a beautiful city, and they’ve done a great job with their downtown area.” While the Blue Devils have nothing but fond memories of Indy — the 1991 title is famous for Duke’s victory over undefeated UNLV in the semifinals — rival North Carolina has logged as many frequent flyer miles to Indy as anyone but hasn’t punched a ticket. The Tar Heels appeared in three of the previous five Final Fours held in Indy — in ‘91, ‘97 and 2000 — but they’ve never even advanced to a title game. In 1991, UNC rather than Duke was supposed to advance to the final, but Dean Smith lost a showdown with Roy Williams and Kansas, and got ejected in the process. In 1997, UNC was one of three No. 1 seeds victimized by Arizona on its

It was a better experience than we could have asked for,” Liebhardt said. “It’s probably the most comfortable headboat we fished, too.” They left the house at 2:15 a.m. and arrived at the docks at just after 6:00. “Our Garmin GPS took us in the back way and got us there fast,” Liebhardt reported. “We were off the boat at 6 p.m. and got home about 11 p.m. that night. We caught a little of everything, red snapper, sea bass, bonito tuna, calypso bass, and lady fish. Other anglers on the boat caught flounder and shark as well as two octopus. It was a great trip.” Though the Liebhardts have fished offshore out of Jacksonville they’re hooked on Carolina Coast fishing. “We started drifting and anchored where we found fish the captain put us right on the fish. I caught three False Albacore, with the largest weighing ten pounds. Man those fish can create a mess on a boat.” He chuckled, “One of the albacore tangled up four guys and when it came over the side, they were all were claiming it. For the Tar Heels (2017) it was a disappointing end to a disappointing season. UNC, which ranked as high as No. 6 in the Associated Press poll, never wanted to be in the second-tier tournament, but after going 5-11 in the ACC it was grateful to sneak into the NIT as a fourth seed and for a chance to keep playing. The Tar Heels reeled off four straight wins for the first time since November to reach Thursday’s title game, but the intensity and timely buckets that had carried them faltered against thirdseeded Dayton (25-12). The Flyers led 45-32 at halftime thanks to a 17-4 run to close the first half, and even though the Tar Heels cut the deficit to two four times in the second half they never could get over the hump.

the top of the fifth, but gave it back plus one in the bottom half to tie the score at 3-3. Preston Gammons singled, then Justin Weavil got aboard after striking out but reaching first on the wild pitch. Gammons scored on a swinging bunt off the bat of Justin Hulin, and Lequire brought in the final run on a grounder to second. East still had two men in scoring position with only one out, but the varying strike zone by the umpire got them rattled. The final two batters struck out to end the inning. “We let the umpire take us out of the game,” said Tricarico. “We were too concerned about what the calls are, versus going up there and focusing on what we need to do. If a umpire calls two strikes on me then I change my approach at the plate, instead of getting upset. That is where we gave the game away to Central.” Hawks found serious trouble in the sixth loading the bases with one out, but a superb diving catch by Weavil in right field set up a double-play situation as he threw to first to get the final out. Lequire came in to pitch the seventh and got out of a jam, and the Golden Eagles went quietly in order in the bottom half. Central put the goahead run aboard in the eighth, and had another runner on base behind him with two outs. Landon Clark made good use of the situation, driving a double to right to plate both, leading to the Central victory. “We were in the driver’s seat in the late innings, but we lost our composure and lost our self control,” said Tricarico. Clark finished with three hits for the Spartans. East will visit Ledford next Friday.
“I’m ecstatic about it. I can’t tell you how happy I am about them taking our staff to Indianapolis.” While strong personalities on teams can clash, these particular personalities mesh. With three seniors and two juniors in the starting lineup and little used fifth-year senior Jordan Davidson as a unifying presence on the bench, this team and been through just about everything together. Both the good and the bad have been for the better, not for the worse. “We have a genuine love for each other,” senior Lance Thomas said. “There are no separate cliques on the team, with certain guys just hanging out with certain guys. “We know that we need each other to win. Not one guy is going to lead us to victory in a game.” Thomas and fellow senior Brian Zoubek often have been overshadowed by the statistical contributions of Duke’s big three — Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith. But internally, Thomas and Zoubek share the spotlight. The tight bonds that have been developed between the players and their coaches have overwhelmed any hint of jealousy that could lead to team turmoil. “I think people have grown into knowing the value of their roles,” Krzyzewski said. “Like for Brian, he knows that even if he scores just four points, it can be because of him that we win the game. Lance, it’s the same way. “They take value from what we see as value, but that takes maturity. These kids are very mature, so they understand that.” Importantly, the relationships don’t shut down once the lights go out in the gym.

playing together,” Smith said. “That really is what drives us. We’re not ready for it to end. “This team has been the best team I’ve been a part of. It’s been fun.”

“We have so much fun, on and off the court,” Smith said. “We go bowling. We go to movies together, go out to dinner. We do pretty much everything.” The close relationships that have developed through such shared experiences — and lots of them over time — have helped things go well enough for Duke to reach the Final Four. Along the way, they helped the Blue Devils survive when things didn’t go as well. “I think it starts with trust from the time they were freshmen,” Krzyzewski said. “We’ve been together for a long time, and we not only like one another but we respect one another and we trust one another. So you can say things in a moment that you might not say to other people in the manner in which you would say it, whether it be in anger, in joy, whatever. You can express your emotions right away with them. “We’ve had that on a lot of our teams; we’ve had it on our teams the last few years. It’s just that we’re a little bit better this year and a little bit older.” The players feel comfortable taking much the same approach with each other. “When one of us doesn’t make a play we should or messes up, the ability to tell that person that they need to do better and to have that person say, ‘I’ll do better,’ not many teams have that,” Scheyer said. “We have a really great ability to tell each other the truth.” Win or lose this weekend, the official journey for this particular Duke team is about to come to an end. The players certainly hope to close out this chapter of their lives with a championship celebration, but there’s little doubt they will remember this team fondly regardless of the on-thecourt outcome. “This team has so much chemistry. We love

SPORTS LESSON From page B1 to raise a “die hard” Carolina fan. Call it the curse of my last name or God’s funny sense of humor, but I am raising a little Blue Devil. Twenty years ago, I would have laughed at the thought, feeling that my sheer love for something would carry over to my offspring. Thomas doesn’t dislike the Tar Heels, but he clearly favors Duke, despite objections from most of his middle school friends, who painstakingly reflect their parents opinion to the point of being closeminded and plain rude. Apparently, in central North Carolina, pulling for Duke basketball makes someone an outsider, shunned by the sheer gall of cheering for any team besides the all-mighty Tar Heels. Some people may take objection to this, but Carolina fans can be pretty pompous at times. I don’t know if it’s a feeling of entitlement, jealousy or envy, but UNC supporters actually turn people off with their blind devotion and inability to comprehend another shade of blue having success. This goes both ways. I have met my share of Duke fans who can be equally obnoxious, but since Tar Heel fans out-number Blue Devil fans, I’ve seen more of the former. When the ball goes up in the air tonight, my son and I will sit and cheer for Duke in unison. I will show him that Duke and Carolina fans can get along and that sports don’t define who you are or what you believe in. Sports are entertainment, an outlet for people to take a few hours out of their hectic schedules to enjoy the spirit of competition. Once the game is over, life goes on and the ball keeps bouncing. I can remember when the Philadelphia Phillies won the 1980 World Series and how happy my father was. What made it so memorable was sharing that with him and the thrill of seeing “my” team win it all. Moments like that transcend time and stay with you forever. That is what I want to share with Thomas, and if it means pulling for Duke, than so be it. Hatred is easy, especially when it comes to sports. I will never, ever, never, root for the New York Yankees, unless my son is playing for them, but they are professionals and make millions of dollars. College sports are different. A passion exists in collegiate athletics that seems to fade once contracts are involved. Once I took a step back, I couldn’t bring myself to hate the Blue Devils any more. I don’t want to be the dad who argues with his son over who lost a ball game. Don’t get me wrong, you won’t see me sporting a Duke hat or shirt anytime soon. I find it hard to even buy Thomas Blue Devil clothing. I will be the dad who sits on the couch with his son and shares in something he enjoys and cares about. This is not about me anymore. I don’t want my son to be me, a person who grew up loathing instead of appreciating. I don’t want him to be the person you see that is so wrapped up in one team or the other that
they can’t see past their own nose. When it comes down to it, these players are nothing more than kids themselves, 18 and 19-year-olds who are living a dream of playing college basketball. How can you find hate in that? I used to, but thanks to the miracle of life and the love I have for my son, my hatred will be saved solely for the Yankees. Duke is off the hook. At least until the Devils beat Carolina again.
HISTORY From page B2 way to an unlikely title. In 2000, a UNC team that advanced to the Final Four as a No. 8 seed fell to Florida in the semis before Michigan State earned its first NCAA crown since Magic Johnson and Co. triumphed in 1979. All told, Michigan State is 7-0 in NCAA Tournament games played in

It’s primarily the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts but is the first building ever built with the needs of the Final Four specifically in minds. Lucas Oil Stadium will seat approximately 7,000 more fans for basketball than it does football, welcoming roughly 70,000 fans Saturday.

Change may be easy — transition is tough TAYLORMADE
MARILYN TAYLOR Business Columnist Change gurus like John Kotter, Spencer Johnson and Ken Blanchard have helped millions of people cope with change. Another giant in the field, William Bridges, draws
an important distinction around the human side of organizational change in Managing Transitions, Making the Most of Change: “It isn’t the changes that do you in, it’s the transitions. They aren’t the same thing. Change is situational: the move to a new site, the retirement of the founder, the reorganization of the roles on the team, the revisions to the pension plan. Transition, on the other hand, is psychological; it is a three-phase process that people go through as they internalize and come to terms with the details of the new situation that the change brings about.”
The three phases referenced above are: Endings — Letting go of old ways, thought patterns, or identities. Neutral Zone — Going through an uncertain, in-between time. Beginnings — Developing new ways and experiencing fresh energy. At first it may sound counterintuitive to start with endings. Isn’t that what beginnings are for? But Bridges instructs us that the endings must be managed first In the Endings phase, we know that a change is needed or that one is coming. Yet we resist and are unwilling to let go. It seems unfair or too hard to do so. Letting go
of something that has sustained us, brought us pleasure, financial gain or deep satisfaction can be extremely difficult. It is a step we must take, however, to enter the Neutral Zone… The Neutral Zone can be confusing, even terrifying. As we step in, we become aware that we’ve never been in exactly this same place before — it is unchartered territory. Stepping away from the known into the unknown; our comfortable routines and patterns fall beneath us. No longer can we rely on how things have been. New ways and mores

Kids say the darndest things BY BILL HILL Guest Columnist
From 1952 until 1970, millions of people tuned into CBS to watch Art Linkletter and the show called “House Party. Linkletter interviewed more than 20,000 children from different backgrounds and different shapes and sizes, races and religions. They all said what they thought. Here are just a few of the achieves, I thought were hilarious. Just sit back, read and enjoy! Mr. Linkletter: “What do you want to be, Tommy, when you grow up? Tommy: “Well a bus driver or a pilot. Mr. Linkletter: “What would you say if all four engines on the plain quit working? In deep thought, Tommy said, “Our Father, which are in heaven, with a big smile on his face. Mr. Linkletter: Randy, “What do you want to be when you grow up to be a man? Randy: “An actor. Mr. Linkletter: “Say, Art Linkletter, like you are mad. Randy, with a grim face and a twisted mouth, replied, “Say, Art Linkletter, like you are mad! Mr. Linkletter: “I am sure you will win an Oscar for that, The audience just roared with laughter. Mr. Linkletter: “Patty, what instruction’s did you get from you parents before you came on the show? Patty, talking very fast, said, “To act like a lady, sit still, sit up straight, don’t cross my legs, don’t put my fingers in my mouth or nose, to be very polite to everybody, not to chat, and chat and
must be learned or created. Talk about being out of our comfort zone! Yet there is a glimmer of hope here that things are going to change and work out, that we are going to move on. And this is where the third phase comes in with‌ New beginnings. The reactions from people in this phase are much more positive: Ahh, I see. This can work. The direction is clearer now. I feel better, more confident, and energetic. I know what I need to do and how to do it. Although challenges remain, new beginnings bring the needed rewards and reinforcement to pull us through the cycle of change. Bridges three phases are reflected in the popular Who Moved My Cheese? story. The choices of the little characters reflect various ways we real people move through Bridges’ process. The mice saw the ending, let go, and quickly moved through the neutral zone to find new beginnings. Hem, on the other hand, consistently refused to let go of what wasn’t working, and lost out. Haw eventually experienced an ending, carefully entered the neutral zone and eventually found his way to new rewards. Whether your taste runs to hoop cheese, a petite round of brie, or a slab of Monterey Jack — mounds of new cheese just have to beat
chat, talk and talk and talk, not to act like the baby doll Chatty Cathy, and to ... I don’t remember the rest!Mr. Linkletter to Patty, “I think that is enough. Let’s move on. Patty smiled and waved into the camera with a big grin on there face and said, “Hi, Mom! Hi, Dad! The child got a standing ovation! Mr. Linkletter: “Gregory, how did God punish Adam and Eve for eating from the apple tree? Gregory: “Well, he made Adam sit down and read the Bible. I mean write the Bible. And he made Eve, be the housewife. Then after that, he sent them both to California! Mr. Linkletter; “Charles, who do you think is the most important person in America? Charles: “Well, George Washington. Mr.Linkletter: “ Well, he is married isn’t he? Charles: “Yes sir, Mr. Linkletter: “Do you know who he is married to? Charles replies, “Miss America. Mr. Linkletter: Sam, “What is the hardest thing for you in school? With a big smile on his face, Sam says, “Buttoning my pants. The audience roars! My personal experience: I was asked by a second grade teacher, “Billy, Where do you get your mail? My reply, “Out of the mail box. Laughter is the best medicine for the soul. Have a great week! Uncle Bill, signing out! For now! Guest Columnist Bill Hill can be contacted at billyunclebill@aol.com.
