Council to consider bus service Business privilege license also on Monday’s agenda BY ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer
Thomasville City Council will discuss a letter of support for a fixed loop bus service in Thomasville and consider a business privilege license at its regular meeting on Monday, April 19.
The 18-passenger bus will run a 30-minute route from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bus stop locations, as well as the location of the three bus shelters, are still being studied by Davidson County Transportation Department. “I think it’s wonderful,” said Thomasville Mayor Joe Bennett. “I’ve heard a lot of folks say there is a need.” The bus service is a pilot project, meaning that the route is subject to change
depending on a variety of factors, including riders’ needs. On Monday, council will vote on whether to write a letter in support of the bus service. “We’re just so appreciative that Davidson County Transportation is going to implement this,” Bennett said. The council also placed consideration for a business privilege license under regular session for next week’s meeting. The ordinance creating the
license will be effective July 1, 2010, if council approves it, and the issuance of the license will begin in October. The city must also hire staff to oversee the administration of the privilege license. All positions will be advertised for, and hiring for the program will be completed by June 1. The total operation cost is estimated at $24,000. That amount accounts fro the purchase of the com-

Commissioner candidates share views at forum BY ERIN WILTGEN Staff Writer
With only four seats up for election in the Davidson County Board of Commissioners’ race, non-incumbent candidates preach the need for change. Five of the 13 challengers — Democrat Jason Hedrick, Republican Owen Moore, Republican Larry Allen, Republican Eddie Gallimore and Republican Kenneth Cavender — attended the commissioners’ forum on Friday, April 9, to discuss the issues facing the county. “Not to say these guys haven’t done a good job, because they have,” Gallimore said, acknowledging Sam Watford, Don Truell and Billy Joe Kepley, the three incumbents running for office. “But I think it’s time that new people get involved and start working to take Davidson County into the future.” “If we get our people back working, our economic development will follow,” said Jason Hedrick. “I think with the jobs that’ll come, people will start spending money around the county, which is something we’ve been lacking a little bit.” And while the candidates agreed that one way to increase employment was to encourage busi-

With winter in the rearview mirror and warm weather becoming the norm, the yard sale season has arrived. Thomasville residents already have started holding weekend yard sales throughout the city as people try to make a few dollars unloading stuff that others covet. This year, thanks to a pair of ordinances passed by Thomasville City Council last November, residents either wanting to have a yard sale or sell goods, such as produce, will need permission to do so or face a possible fine. In an effort to ensure weekend shoppers don’t turn into victims of fraud, City Council set up a permit system for yard sales and itinerant merchants, establishing guidelines

in some sort.” For-profit yard sales are still allowed in Thomasville, but they must be held on a residential property and not in the commercial district. Yard sales are prohibited on commercial properties such as local businesses. The new ordinance also prohibits having a yard sale on a vacant lot. “That’s sort of what brought all this to light,” said Hepler. “We had people coming from out of town setting up on a vacant lot without a clue as to who owned to property. They would just set up and start selling stuff and that’s what a lot of this is about.” Hepler said one vendor came to town last summer and sold a woman a used washer and dryer that didn’t work. When the woman came to city

Colonoscopy screening has proven track record
HPRH honored by American College of Radiology TIMES STAFF REPORT
HIGH POINT – According to the American College of Radiology (ACR), the High Point Regional Cancer Center’s Department of Radiation Oncology has received its highest designation, making it the only ACR-accredited radiation therapy facility in the Piedmont Triad, and one of only two in the state of North Carolina. “While most clinics in our field are committed to delivering high quality care, we chose to take the next step by allowing ourselves to be measured by a standard greater than ourselves, said Medical Director, Dr. Bart Frizzell, Department of Radiation Oncology. “This accreditation is not the end of a process, but rather proof of the value of our ongoing commitment to delivering the best care possible. Patients should know in order to receive the ACR accreditation, the Cancer Center has voluntarily undergone a rigorous review process, in which nationally accepted standards were met. In addition, the ACR accreditation ensures that staff in the Radiation Oncology Department is qualified through certifications, licensure and education. The equipment and the technologies used have been found to be of the highest quality, ensuring High Point Regional’s facility either meets or exceeds quality assurance and safety guidelines. There have been a number of national reports regarding adverse events related to radiation oncology procedures and CT scans; therefore, the ACR is calling for mandatory accreditation of all advanced imaging and radiation oncology providers. “We realized years ago that everyone in our field tends to promote that they have the newest, latest and greatest technology, said Frizzell. “The quest for ACR accreditation represents an ongoing commitment to provide the best possible care, through innovative technology, delivered by compassionate and highly qualified staff. The Cancer Center is affiliated with
the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Combining High Point’s outstanding patient-centered personal care with the resources of a nationally recognized academic medical center affords patients an exceptional environment for healing. Multiple advanced imaging and treatment technologies, designed to assist in more accurate detection of cancers and to provide for better targeting of tumors, are available at High Point Regional. These include: Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Magnetic Resonance DR. that the worst part is not the screening, but rather the preparation. One day prior to the test, it is clear liquids only and a gallon of polyethylene glycol (GoLytely), which must be finished within four hours. Though the mixture is a painful concoction to stomach (I felt like GoLytely was bubbling up through my nose, eyes and ears), by the next day my colon was as clear as a whistle. The procedure itself is simple. But because the test can be very uncomfortable, I willingly received an intravenous injection of Versed, which causes sedation and memory loss, and Demerol to help reduce pain. Some people attempt to do the procedure without sedation or analgesia, although I strongly recommend against it. However, Versed does affect memory. For this reason, you should avoid driving after the procedure and should probably take the day off from work. My family history of colon cancer is particularly serious, though

Each year, approximately 150,000 patients are diagnosed as having colon cancer and 50,000 of these will die, making colon cancer the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Fortunately with earlier diagnosis, prevention strategies and newer approaches to treatment, death rates from cancer appear to be declining. FROM PAGE 1 VIEWS From page 1 ness, they had different ideas on which businesses to promote. “I think we really need to focus on the people that we have here and now and foster their growth at the same time that we’re trying to get other businesses to come into town, Hedrick said. “That’s going to be our largest source of growth. Moore, Gallimore and Cavender promoted the local business angle, saying that keeping local companies in business is part of what makes the county attractive to outside merchants. Local companies not only generate revenue for the county, but they have a built-in incentive to support the community because they’re already here. “We need to worry about what we’ve already got instead of what we may get, Gallimore said. “The companies that are already here are the ones that we know, as long as they can survive, are going to be the biggest supporters of the people who live in this county. If it’s one job that puts one more person back to work, that really helps. But attracting new companies into the county also forms a crucial part in developing the economy, and both Allen and Cavender emphasized a need for an increase in such projects. “That’s something we’ve been swallowed up by the surrounding counties, “We still have occasions where children show up and they have never been identified, said Karen Sylvester, TCS’ exceptional children director. “I don’t think there’s an understanding of autism, for one. In the past two years, Logan has made a lot of progress at Thomasville Primary School, such as saying words and spending time in a normal classroom environment. Bugg credits the TPS staff as the reason for her son’s improvement, and due to the financial difficulties of treating autism, she relies on that support heavily. “This is our only outlet, Part of that commercial development involves increasing the tourism opportunities in the county by building on the entertainment options such as malls, theaters and even developing High Rock Lake. But as the candidates pointed out, economic development only forms one corner of the commissioners’ multi-faceted job description. Catering to questions posed by Piedmont Crossing director Dwight Story, the commissioner-hopefuls touched in various visions for the county’s future. There are currently 13 autistic students in TCS — 12 boys and one girl. Statistics show that one out of every 110 students are autistic, and in North Carolina, the number is one out of 97. Four boys to every one girl are diagnosed with autism. Sylvester said TCS receives funding for special needs children, but there’s not extra money available for autism. Being that TCS only has around 2,600 students, available resources tend to be smaller than larger school systems. “With our 13 autistic children, they tend to need more than the average child with a disability because of the unique characteristics they display in a school setting, POLICIES From page 1 hall for help, nothing could be done because the man skipped town and nobody knew who he was. Under the new ordinance, anyone wanting to conduct a yard sale must obtain a permit from city hall. The permit costs $5 and will include the person’s name having the yard sale, the name of the property owner where the sale is taking place, the location of the yard sale and the date. A person can have no more than three yard sales per year and the permit is for one day only during daylight hours. The permit must be prominently displayed through the entire yard sale, and failure to do so could result in a $50 fine. Alternate dates for the yard sale can be made, but it must be due to inclement weather. Hepler said the city has seen a rise in the amount of yard sales in town in the past year as people try to make a few bucks amidst the national recession. “We’ve seen a lot of people setting up just trying to make money to pay their bills, said Hepler. “This is not money to go on vacation. Hedrick said such a merger would cost the system time and money, citing his experience working with the Guilford County School System, which has its central maintenance office in Greensboro and requires maintenance workers to drive to the office first and then out to schools across the county. “They spend half the day in the car, Other topics included the I-85 bridge project, building a new jail, cleaner water, transportation and preserving the county’s farms. “There are a lot of needs, but the number one is we’ve got to market this county, Allen said. “We’ve got to look at our untapped resources. The eight absent candidates either cited conflicts or gave no response. The missing candidates were Democrats Kevin Williams, Ronald Swicegood, Donald Switzer and Philip Olshinski; and Republicans Eric Osborne, Dwight Cornelison, Joseph Byerly and Jeffery Yates. Last year, Thomasville High School graduated its first autistic student, and while he will have special needs for the rest of his life, Sylvester said he is out in the community and can still be a productive member of society. Bugg would like more communication between teachers and parents of autistic children so that both parties can work together and gain a better understanding of each child’s specific needs. street right-of-way. All signs must be removed within 24 hours after the yard sale is over. Itinerant merchants also will have to obey certain guidelines under a similar ordinance. An itinerant merchant is anyone who transports goods or merchandise, being used or new, to any outdoor location in the city and offers to sell them. This basically applies to someone selling produce or fireworks during the Fourth of July. Itinerant merchants will have to get a similar permit, requiring the applicant’s name, address, employer, the nature of the goods being sold, the location where the goods will be sold, a photograph of the person, a photocopy of a valid North Carolina driver’s license and a letter from the property owner where the merchant will engage in business. This permits also costs $5, but a person can purchase one for a year for $100. “In these tough economic times, we realize people are trying to make money any way they can to make ends meet, anything like that. We really don’t to this day know what causes autism. I think it’s a lot of things. It’s never-ending grief. Sylvester said it’s important to keep autistic children in a normal classroom and not in a separate setting because she feels learning from peers in a social environment is key to their development, both short and long term. “We don’t want to write anyone off, Sylvester said. “If we put them in a separate setting room, especially in our district, a lot of the kids are low functioning and don’t have verbal skills. How can we give them the skills they need if they’re not around others kids? Autism is a neural development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, accompanied by restricted and repetitive behavior.

It’s far-reaching and there was a lot of compromise. Anyone found violating the permit will be asked to leave and will have their permit revoked. Charitable organizations may apply for an annual permit at no charge, but a letter must be sent to the owner of the property being utilized. Customer parking has to be provided by the applicant on the same premises where business in being conducted. “This is just to regulate who is here and what they’re doing, Hepler said. “We had people coming in setting up shop and leaving behind an eyesore. We’re trying to eliminate that. All permits may be acquired at City Hall.
RECORD From page 3 should begin screening at age 40. A person is at high risk if more than one family member has had colon cancer, if the disease was diagnosed under age 45, if it is present in more than one generation, or if a close relative has had 10 or more polyps identified during colonoscopies. A person is also at high risk of colon cancer if other cancers, such as breast, lung, prostate or kidney, are common in the family medical history. With the controversy regarding unnecessary biopsies after mammogram screenings for breast cancer and PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screenings for prostate cancer, some patients have become wary of too much cancer screening. However, of all the cancers that can be screened for, colon cancer offers the best chance of success with the fewest false positives. Sadly, less than 50 percent of the population receives appropriate screening for colon cancer. The simplest test for colon cancer is the fecal occult blood test, which involves screening the stool for microscopic amounts of blood. This easy procedure should be done annually in everyone over the age of 50 and beginning at age 40 in those at high risk. This simple test, combined with regular colonoscopies, is more effective at preventing colon cancer than any comparable procedure to detect or prevent breast or prostate cancer. For individuals at low risk of colon cancer, screening for blood in the stool should be done annually after 50 and a colonoscopy should be performed every
five years until age 75. For those at high risk, colonoscopies might be needed more frequently. For all forms of cancer, prevention and early detection is the best way to avert any health problems. Thanks to advances in science and technology, cancer prevention is more and more successful. For example, my gastroenterologist recently suggested genetic testing to determine if I had the genes associated with a high risk for colon cancer. This knowledge will be an important tool to help my children know how and when to be screened for the disease as they grow older. For the baby boomers, if you or someone you love has never had a colonoscopy, it is time to talk to your doctor. Never refuse to have a proven screening test because it seems difficult, uncomfortable or inconvenient. The right screening, at the right time, can save your life. The currency bubble VIEWPOINT
MARTHA R. CARR Syndicated Columnist One of the bigger obstacles to the US economy gaining substantial numbers of jobs is the battle over valuation of currency among different nations. The amount a currency is valued at is largely tied to the strength of their economy but it’s possible for individual countries to manipulate the pricing in either direction so that they can gain an advantage on the international markets when exporting their own goods and services. There’s still a certain amount of balance that generally has to be maintained in order to avoid inflation as well as a recession but in times of international economic crises where things are already off kilter, like the Great Recession that’s been rippling through countries, it’s possible for a country to work their advantage. Currently, China’s yuan is seen as greatly undervalued at least since the beginning of 2008, which has given them a significant advantage in the export of goods and services. Made in China has lead to a trade imbalance and the US owing China billions of dollars, which can make foreign policy a little trickier. It’s hard to press a controversial point home to someone who’s holding all of your chits. According to the US Census, the US international trade deficit in goods and services decreased to $37.3 billion in January from $39.9 billion in December, and even better news, our imports decreased more than our exports. That means we sold a little more and we bought a little less. However, the report also showed that when it came to China the opposite was true. The goods deficit increased from $18.1 billion to $18.3 billion increasing the trade imbalance and our bill. There are two ways to approach any market when it comes to pricing and making money. Either a price can be set higher and an established quality will be what drives the market to want the goods or the price can be set so competitively that the market buys the goods based primarily on low cost. Think of it as Tiffany’s jewelry counter versus WalMart’s. While Tiffany’s little blue box ensures a certain
cachet and quality and the prices can make most shoppers gasp, there are still enough shoppers. Wal-Mart does a bigger volume in jewelry sales but at a much lower price point. Both stores win because they’re appealing to different markets. However, when it comes to the world of imports and exports it’s pricing that trumps and can mean the difference of billions of dollars and thousands of new jobs. It was established awhile ago that Americans buy mostly on the basis of price rather than quality. But when we get something at a really low price, we still end up paying for it with a stalled economy. It’s not possible to keep buying on the cheap without any kind of consequence. As China started to develop a more commercial economy they began by developing foreign sources, such as the US who already had the means to pay for goods and services, rather than pour all of their time and efforts into strengthening domestic growth. Then, when the recession started and households had to make their money stretch further, China was able to take advantage of their established markets and push price and volume over quality till they became the largest player on the block. That is now costing American jobs and slowing down our recovery. The European market and the euro is having its own crisis and has had to come to the rescue of individual countries, most prominently Greece, in order to avoid a sudden decline in the valuation of the euro. Greece’s economic instability is another potential bubble in a general recovery and some believe the recent deal struck with the International Monetary Fund is not enough to stave off collapse. That could devastate our exports if the European market were to severely contract. President Obama recently said in his January State of the Union address that he wanted to see US exports double in five years. It would have a tremendous impact on the employment rate in our country and have a positive impact on our economy that would be lasting and spread out to the general economy. In order to do that, the administration is going to have to negotiate with China and show them why it is to their advantage to also try to build a domestic market for their own goods. However, without a democratic push in a country without voters pushing for a better quality of life it may be a hard sell.
Traveling through the eyes of others VIEWPOINT
D.G. MARTIN N.C. Columnist If we had a choice, would we opt to see the world? Or, instead, would we take an opportunity to see ourselves as others see us? Last week, I got to do a little of both at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham. For a hundred years, films have made it possible for viewers to travel almost anywhere and to experience vividly the life stories of other people. Documentary films have done this job well. But it has been a tough road. The great expense of securing and using high quality equipment and talented and creative artists put a limit on the number of films that could be made. It has been tough to get enough funding — especially when few documentary films are commercial successes. But the great improvements in video cameras and editing equipment now make it possible for talented filmmakers to shoot and process documentaries on a very low budget. The result has been an explosion of productions. For instance, the Full Frame Festival was barraged with more than a thousand entries. It crowded about
100 films into four days last week, leaving many, many very good films that will have to look for another venue to share their stories. With one of the selected films, “Last Train Home,” I took a jam-packed, tense train ride from one end of China to the other. I rode with workers returning from a new factory town to their home in rural China. There, I experienced with them how China’s industrialization has destroyed traditional family life. Another film, “Kings of Pastry,” took me to France for a brutal competitive event in which an American chef sought, bravely but unsuccessfully, to gain recognition as a French Master Chef. Every viewer shared the agony of his defeat and was also inspired by his spirited assertion of the value of the entire experience. “Garbo: The Spy” told the unbelievable story of a “double agent” whose false reports to his German handlers helped “prove” that the main Allied attack was not aimed, at Normandy, but at the beaches near Calais. What brought me back home to North Carolina was “How to Fold a Flag,” about four soldiers who fought together in Iraq. When they got home, they had to fight their personal battles alone. Every returning soldier’s challenges to readapt are different. The film’s stories shout out that our country is not doing enough to ease the way for soldiers coming home. For instance, one of the subjects, Michael Goss, who was unfairly dismissed from the army, could not get the medical help he needs to deal with the haunting
guilt he feels for participating an incident that inadvertently resulted in the death of Iraqi children. Another returning soldier, Jon Powers, bravely mounted a hopeful campaign for Congress. He gained wide popular support based on his military service. But in the end, his rivals’ million dollar negative TV ads denied him success. In North Carolina, Javorn Drummond, returned to rural Cumberland County near Fayetteville to live in a dilapidated mobile home while trying to fund the completion of a college education at Fayetteville State by working in a hog processing plant. It was hard for all of them. For them the war continues. Quoting German author Ernst Jünger, the film asserts on its subjects’ behalf, “We were asked to believe that the war was over. We laughed-for we were the war.” Thanks to Full Frame, I visited China, France, World War II Europe, and Iraq. I saw the inside of the lives of those who lived and fought there. And through their lenses I saw something of myself, as others may see me. D.G. Martin is hosting his final season of UNC-TV’s North Carolina Bookwatch, which airs Sundays at 5 p.m. For more information or to view prior programs visit the webpage at www. unctv.org/ncbookwatch/. This Sunday’s (April 18) guest is, is Marianne Gingher, author of “Adventures in Pen Land, ” a “writer’s memoir” in which Gingher describes her life leading to the publication of her first novel, the still popular “Bobby Rex’s Greatest Hit.”

BY REID SPENCER NASCARMedia.com AVONDALE, Ariz. — It was a game of numbers — two and four. Capitalizing on a late caution that extended Saturday’s Subway Fresh Fit 600 three laps past its scheduled distance of 375 laps, Ryan Newman and crew chief Tony Gibson snatched victory from Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch with a two-tire call under the final caution. Both Busch and Johnson took four tires on Lap 373, under caution for Scott Riggs’ blown tire in Turn 4 one lap earlier. Gordon, who took two tires and left pit road with the lead, spun his tires on the decisive restart on Lap 377, allowing Newman to surge into the top spot. After two circuits under green at the flat
one-mile track, Newman crossed the finish line .130 seconds ahead of Gordon to win his 14th NASCAR Sprint Cup race and his first since the 2008 Daytona 500—a 77-race drought. Johnson charged from seventh to third during the green-white-checkered-flag finish. Mark Martin, also on two tires for the final restart, ran fourth, one position ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya. Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano completed the top 10. Johnson extended his lead in the series standings to 36 points over Kenseth in second and to 96 over third-place Greg Biffle, who finished 22nd Saturday. “I’ve got to throw Gibson under the bus — he wanted to go four, and I said, ‘Just give

Thomasville allowed West Davidson striker Mo Yarboro to score five goals, as the visiting Green Dragons walloped the Lady Bulldogs, 6-0 in Central Carolina Conference play. The first 20 minutes were brutal for THS, with Yarboro scoring four of her goals during that stretch. Her first tally came around 10 seconds into the game when she took the kickoff, dribbled down the field and booted the ball in. She was at it again at the 10 minute mark, breaking away on the left side for a goal. Joslyn Spires had the best scoring opportunity for THS moments later, but her shot was safely defended by the West goalie. Yarboro picked up the first half hat trick with 22:30 still to play, and added one more a minute later to make it a four-goal night. West added one more goal before the half. Thomasville played considerably better in the second half, limiting West to a single goal scored off the foot of Yarboro. “We start out flat and get deflated so easily,” said Thomasville coach Huey Turner. “If we take away the first 10 minutes of a game, we will be all right.” Thomasville falls to 0-3 in the CCC and is currently 2-7 overall.

More than just a green jacket for Mickelson’s
That first qualifying lap of the season will be crucial, especially for new drivers to the division who need to turn a fast lap in order to make the field. Joseph “Bobo” Brown will be one such driver to jump behind the wheel of a Sportsman car this season. Brown won three races last season in the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series and finished an incredibly close second-place in the final points standings.
There have been plenty of feel-good moments throughout the years in sports, but perhaps none as tear-jerking as Phil Mickelson’s Masters win on Sunday at Augusta National. Lefty already had two green jackets, but this one did more than just place him in rarefied air with some of the tournament’s greatest players — it represents hope, and a realization that there are things far greater than the game of golf. Mickelson’s wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, making the past few months some of the most difficult for the family. Golf was the last thing on Phil’s mind for a while, but the Masters is golf ’s grandest stage, and what better place to bring awareness to cancer than there. With a pink ribbon on his cap throughout the tournament, Mickelson made a steady climb up the leaderboard, but Amy was not on course to see it. Beginning the final round of competition one stroke back, Mickelson made a charge on the back nine that is one for the ages. He pulled off a miraculous shot at No. 13 out of the woods with a 6-iron to make birdie, moments after rolling in a crowd-roaring putt at No. 12.

Sportsman Division grows at Bowman Gray TIMES STAFF REPORT As Bowman Gray Stadium prepares to kick-off their 2010 racing season on April 24, the complexion of the Sportsman field may be changing. Judging by pre-season registrations and by the attendance at the GRIZZLYPre-Season Practices, the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series may have 30 or more cars vying to make a 24car field. The quantity of cars is due in large part to
the relatively low cost of competing in the Sportsman Division. “The Sportsman Series is really one of the most affordable classes of racing right now,” said Gray Garrison, promoter of Bowman Gray Stadium Racing. “Sportsman cars can have economical ‘crate’ motors and we also run an affordable tire. Many drivers feel they can be competitive and still keep their costs reasonable.” To set the field of 24 cars for the open-
ing night 40-lapper, the Sportsman Series will be qualifying the previous day. The 14 fastest qualifiers will make the field, with 10 provisional spots being given to drivers who were in the top 20 in 2009 points standings and were unable to enter the lineup on qualifying time. If there are any remaining spots, they will be given to the remaining competitors in order of qualifying time. Then, the entire field of 24 cars will draw for starting positions.

On two tires, I was kind of impressed—but there were a lot of cars behind us with two tires. It was a good situation to be in. It was just the right time, right place. Busch and Johnson had dominated the two long green-flag runs that preceded the two-lap dash to the finish. In fact, Busch, who tied Johnson for most laps led with 113, stayed out front from the time he passed Johnson on Lap 262 until Riggs’ accident 110 laps later. “I can’t freaking believe this, Busch lamented on the radio to crew chief Dave Rogers when the ninth and final yellow flag flew. “What do you want to do? Busch and Rogers opted for four tires. Johnson made the same call for his No. 48 team. “I was excited to see the caution come out, because it was an opportunity to win, Johnson said. “I decided—I made the call for four tires. It’s the first time that I can remember in a long time that I actually said
what I wanted for a pit stop, with the way Martinsville played out and Bristol and last night’s (Nationwide) race (where four-tire calls proved successful). I knew with the green-white checkered there weren’t a lot of laps, but I felt we might get a caution with everybody racing so hard. “So I made the call for four and made the most of it. We got from seventh to third and just did what we could. So, not a bad night at all. Excited to see us stretch out the points a little bit and get another top-five finish here. Racing for the first time since March 31 surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, Denny Hamlin completed the race in 30th place, two laps down. Asked after the race if he was in pain, Hamlin replied, “More than I can tell you. I’m pretty sure I didn’t do any damage or anything like that, but I’m absolutely exhausted right now. Hamlin had Casey Mears standing by as a relief driver, but opted not to use him. “I got a lot of encouragement from the team, said Hamlin, who fell three spots to 18th in the standings. “Through thick and thin, we’re a team. I feel like they’d give their left leg for me and do everything they could do to make sure we were successful, and I felt
Burton to 25th at the finish. ‌ Polesitter AJ Allmendinger came home 15th. ‌ Kyle Busch, Logano and Edwards supplanted Paul Menard (29th Saturday), Kurt Busch (35th) and Brian Vickers (37th) in the top 12. ‌ Newman improved six positions to 16th in points.
like it was my duty and my job and that’s what I’m hired to do, is to try to do the best I can and keep this team as good as we can. Notes: Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 12th and held on to 10th in the Cup standings. ‌ A one-lap penalty for pitting outside his box dropped Jeff

Tax-free income is the best gift you can give yourself at retirement. Converting to a Roth IRA from a traditional IRA allows for tax-free accumulation as well as tax-free withdrawals in retirement – which means you don’t have to worry as much about what income tax rates will be in the future. There are tax considerations and other factors that determine whether converting to a Roth IRA is right for you. And changes set for 2010 will eliminate the $100,000 modiďŹ ed adjusted gross income (MAGI) limit, which means anyone can convert to a Roth IRA. Call today to schedule an appointment to learn more. We’ll discuss your retirement goals to help determine if a Roth IRA makes sense for you. Edward Jones, its employees and ďŹ nancial advisors do not provide tax or legal advice. SPORTS FRIENDSHIP II WINS TITLE Friendship II Instructional boys team won the 2010 Davidson County basketball championship. Friendship finished with a perfect 10-0 record. MORE From page 7 His round was made even better by another birdie at No. 15, and it appeared the tournament was at its climax as he strode up to the green at 18 to stand over another birdie putt. The best was yet to come. With a commanding lead, he ended the way all of us aspiring golfers dream of doing — he rolled in the birdie putt as the fans sprung to their feet. He had done it, Masters champion once again. With all that was on his mind, he overcame all emotions and finished the job. Yet, the tournament’s finest moment did not come inside the ropes with a six-iron or a putter, it came steps away from his memorable putt in the gallery. There stood his wife, courageously awaiting the arrival of her husband. He spotted her, and the two embraced, surely bringing tears to viewers
all over the world. It was a fitting, ironic end to a tournament that was anticipated by the return of Tiger Woods — a man who was once believed to be the ultimate family man, only to find out he was not staying to true to his vows. Woods remains a great player, and will likely win himself another green jacket before his career has ended. But on Sunday, the TRUE family man was crowned. Throw the term ‘good guys finish last’ out the window, because Mickelson just proved that wrong. A Masters win is not a cure for breast cancer, but for one day, it brought joy to a family that has been through so much the past year. At a place where women are not allowed to become members, the most heroic person on the golf course turned out to be Amy Mickelson. I think Phil will have no problem sharing this green jacket with her.
