Davidson County Sheriff ’s Office has charged a Thomasville woman with embezzling thousands of dollars from a local church. According to a DCSO press release, Kathy Koonts Sechriest, 53, of 206 Hasty School Road, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one felony count of embezzlement of greater than $100,000 after an investigation alleged she stole money from Zion United Church of Christ where she worked as a secretary. Sechriest Representatives from the church declined to comment Friday. Detectives received information from Zion United Church of Christ members about possible misappropriation of funds in January, prompting an investigation. A warrant for arrest filed by detective Sam Rabon stated that Sechriest “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did embezzle $186,000” from the church and at the time “had been entrusted to receive the property.” “Folks from the church gave us a call and we started our investigation,” Davidson County Sheriff David Grice said. “[Sechriest] was the church’s secretary and was responsible for writing the checks and balancing the books, and things of that nature. She obviously wasn’t balancing the books.” Grice said he couldn’t say exactly how Sechriest allegedly embezzled the money because the information is a key piece of DCSO’s investigation. Sechriest was issued and posted a $100,000 unsecured bond. Conditions of Sechriest’s release include that she can’t “harass, assault or threaten” members of the church. The investigation alleges that Sechriest embezzled the funds over

homasville Police Department has worked to build respect and rapport with the citizens it serves and protects through its Community Policing policy. Officers with TPD continued those efforts Thursday at Doak Park by kicking off its second year participating in the Badges for Baseball program. Founded by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, Badges for Baseball pairs youths in at-risk communities with local law enforcement officers as a way to teach children lessons both on and off the field. TPD Lt. Raymond Widener says the program is a good way for children to build relationships with officers as well as learn lessons that will help them in every aspect of life. “Officers act as mentors and the kids learn how to interact with other children, good sportsmanship, ethics and good decision making,” Widener said. “It also helps them learn how to deal with conflict in a sportsmanlike manner.” When fully implemented, Badges for Baseball is a multi-faceted mentoring program that brings the tenets of “The Ripken Way” to young people through a variety of programs, including Healthy Choices, Healthy Children and baseball/softball-themed activities, according to the Cal Ripkin Foundation website. Most importantly, law enforcement mentors work directly with children to enhance life lessons while providing young people with new opportunities to learn, grow and make positive choices for the future.

State Highway Patrol changes chase protocol

Chair City offers cool summer activities BY ELIOT DUKE Staff Writer

BY ELIOT DUKE Staff Writer North Carolina state troopers will have to follow new protocol when it comes to chasing suspects who are fleeing the scene of a crime. Policy changes within the N.C. State Highway Patrol now states that troopers can’t join in on vehicle pursuits being conducted by other law enforcement agencies without being asked first. SHP adopted the policy change in June that says troopers must receive a formal request from a highway patrol communication center through the participating law enforcement agency before taking part in any type of chase scenario. Troopers are not allowed to take action by simply receiving a request from another officer. “The change has to do with allied agency chases,” Sgt. B.D. Stalvey with the SHP station of Davidson

When it comes to summer, people often think of spending hot afternoons at the beach or by the lake with family, enjoying some well-deserved time off. Thomasville is positioned equally between the coast and the mountains, offering families a vacation choice not too far from home. Thomasville Parks & Recreation, however, uses summertime to showcase a variety of services right here at home for parents who still have to work during the day while their chil-

dren are out of school. While most Chair City residents know about the city pool located at the corner of Memorial Park Drive and Salem Street, TPR often has a lot more going on for children who need something to do until their parents get home in the evening. “We’ve got that going on about every day,” Billy Freeman, director of TPR, said about the pool. “We’ll be offering swimming lessons starting on July 13 for a two-week period. We try to give kids the best experience we can.”

93-year old shovel operator runs out of steam TIMES STAFF REPORT

DENTON — After 40 years of providing maintenance to equipment at Denton Farm Park — 33 of which he operated the Steam Shovel at the Threshers Reunion — Willard Moore, 93, announced his retirement on Wednesday, July 1. Plant Services Magazine, in Chicago, and SkillTV.net recognized Moore’s service with their first national Lifetime Achievement Award during a presentation on Friday, July 2 during the Southeast Old Threshers’ Reunion in Denton. Moore claims his parents, Mother Nature and Father Time, urged him to turn the controls over to someone else. He’s been a busy man. For the past 40 years, Moore has cleaned, greased and kept equipment operating at the Denton FarmPark. For 33 of those years, he operated the 22-ton 1916 Erie Steam Shovel at the Threshers Reunion. During the past 39 years, Moore has held a fundraiser, Yesteryear in Motion, at his home for the Jamestown Lions Club. The event has been a smaller version of the Threshers’ Reunion and has focused upon all kinds of engines. Nearly 40 years ago, his passion for machinery led him to become the chaplain of the Triad chapter of the national Association of Facilities Engineers. He is still active in the group. But it’s his command of the

bucket which has made him one of the most popular people at the Thresher’s Reunion. Throughout the years, hundreds of thousands of festival goers have watched him navigate the large scoop, digging up red clay and then dumping it for use later. The sheer size of the shovel and the volume of dirt it holds, has made it one of the most photographed ob-

jects at the park. He has been a magnet for children’s curiosity to see how he’s been able to manipulate that big machine. “It’s physically challenging running that machine, said Moore. “You have one lever for forward, another to swing, one for backward, but you have to know exactly when to put your foot on the brake. If not, you lose the cable and drop the bucket. It’s not a simple job. You have to think and act accordingly.

A plant maintenance supervisor and machinist for Carolina Springs, which later became Leggett and Platt, Moore stumbled across the old shovel in Harrisonburg, Va. in the mid 1970s. It caught his eye because he had played with a small steam shovel as a young boy. That unit is on display in the Radio Museum at the FarmPark. The big one had been used to dig rock in a quarry. Later on, owners turned it into an outdoor advertising sign. Moore was troubled by that and thought it needed to be put to better use. He told Brown Loflin, founder of the Threshers’ Reunion, “If you buy and restore it, I’ll operate it. That’s what happened. Moore recounts the old machine needed a lot of work. He and Loflin rebuilt most of it. “Brown has been a big help to me, Moore said with a smile. “We help each other. And he has a background of helping other maintenance guys, according to Joel Leonard, former AFE national vice-president and writer for Plant Services Magazine. “As chaplain, his prayers revolve around helping guide maintenance guys with their work. His passion and ingenuity to make things work correctly has always been phenomenal. So, it was because of their 15-year relationship that Leonard contacted Putman Media in Chicago, owner of Plant Services Magazine and collaborative partner with him on

CHASE From page A1 County. “In order for the highway patrol to be involved in an allied agency chase there has to be an official request from that agency to our communication center. There can’t be one officer calling another officer. The highway patrol can be involved but only as a secondary chase unit. We will not take over another agencies chase. The agency has to formally request our assistance. According to the SHP, the policy change is not a reaction to the recent traffic fatality in Jamestown when a Thomasville woman and an 11-yearold girl were struck and killed by a state trooper allegedly in pursuit of a speeder. Troopers still have the authority to chase a vehicle they find violating the law. “The highway patrol will still chase somebody, said Stalvey. “Depending on the circumstances or why the person hasn’t stopped or the violation, determines whether we chase or not. We still have a chase policy and are governed by that policy. The only thing that has changed is allied agency assistance. On May 23, Sandra Allmond, 55, and Taylor Strange, 11, died as a re-

sult of a high-speed crash on Interstate 85 Business when trooper J.D. Goodnight slammed into the side of Allmond’s Honda Accord while chasing a Buick Skylark for speeding. Goodnight claimed he clocked the Skylark going 85 mph heading south on I-85 Business and turned around on Vickery Chapel Road to begin a pursuit. An investigation revealed Goodnight reached speeds near 120 mph before crashing into Allmond, who was turning left at the River Road intersection. Goodnight struck Allmond’s car going at least 90 mph, according to the investigation, ripping her car in two. Allmond died at the scene and Strange succumbed to her injuries hours later at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Two other children were in Allmond’s car and suffered injuries. “That wasn’t a chase, that was an enforcement response, Stalvey said. “A chase is somebody willfully failing to stop for bluelights or a siren and attempting to get away. Goodnight was placed on paid leave but has since returned to his regular duties following an internal investigation by the SHP. SUMMER From page A1 For nine weeks out of the summer, TPR holds a summer camp at Central Recreation Center for kids from pre-school through middle school. The camp can take up to 100 children at a time, offering them plenty to do like skating, putt-putt, watching movies and playing games. The camp runs Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and costs $24 a week. “That’s our biggest thing and it’s the best deal in town, said Freeman. “We try to provide as much as we can with the resources we have. We hire about 10 part-time workers for the summer camp and we have the lifeguards and inside workers at the pool. The fact we are able to hire those part-time people allows us to do those things. “It helps working parents know that there’s a place where their kids will be safe and will get to do different activities with their friends. It’s a good service. Youth little league baseball and softball is wrapping up with football and cheerleading to follow in August. TPR’s Central Recreation Center on

East Main Street has an indoor gymnasium and tennis courts, and a new center recently opened on Ball Park Road. Doak Park on Carmalt Street is equipped with baseball fields, a skate park, basketball courts, a picnic area and a playground. One of Thomasville’s biggest attractions over the past few years has been the HiToms, a coastal Plain League franchise featuring college level players using wooden bats. The HiToms recently won three consecutive league titles and their home park, Finch Field, hosts the Chair City’s annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration. “There’s only four or five cities in the state the size of Thomasville who have baseball like this, HiToms President Greg Suire. “We work a lot with the middle school and the Legion teams, as well. We do quite a bit. People don’t have to leave town to have a great time with their family. The pool is open Sunday-Friday from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday from 12-6 p.m. The cost is $2. You’ve been there. In a conversation with high stakes, differing opinions and strong emotions, anything can happen. Authors Kerry Paterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler outline the steps to count on in their bestseller Crucial Conversations: Start with Heart Learn to Look Make It Safe Master My Stories STATE My Path Explore Others’ Paths Move to Action We’ve reviewed the first three skills in earlier columns; today we will consider what it means to “Master My Stories. When is the last time you heard this statement, “He made me so mad! Crucial Conversation authors (along with many behavioral specialists) offer the following audacious claims: Claim 1: You create your own emotions. Claim 2: You can act on them or be acted on by them. In other words, when the other guy states his opinion, we first hear what is said and then immediately begin to react internally. Our reactions are based on many things – far beyond the words we just heard. We each have a rich databank of assumptions, beliefs, and habits (including prejudices and biases) that comprise our process pool. When involved in a difficult, emotional conversation, we access that deep pool with blinding speed – often completely unaware of what is going on beneath the surface. Once our story has “registered, then we experience a specific emotion and act

on it in some fashion. Here is how that process is depicted in the book: There is an intermediate step between what others do and how we feel: See/Hear Tell a Stry Feel Act Did the other guy really make you mad? Stories are just interpretations of the facts. What kinds of stories do we tell ourselves when caught in a crucial conversation? Examples include: It’s not my fault: there’s nothing I can do about this; he’s the one at fault here. We tell ourselves such stories, which often do not match reality, because trying to figure out alternatives is so much harder to do. But useful stories can be told as well. They are often framed around questions such as: What do I need to look at here? Am I minimizing my contribution to this issue? What would cause a reasonable person to act in this way? In this way, emotions can be created that lead to healthy dialogue and mutually beneficial solutions. To sum it up: The WORST at dialogue are hostage to their emotions and don’t even know it. Those GOOD at dialogue know they need to control their emotions so they fake it. The BEST at dialogue negotiate their emotions by thinking them out. After the holiday week, we’ll get back on the path with Skill No. 5 “State My Path. Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July! Making the world more dangerous BY MONA CHAREN Syndicated Columnist The timing could hardly have been worse: Just days after President Obama shared a chummy hamburger with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev — the better to dramatize our newly “reset” relations — the FBI announced the arrest of 11 “deep cover” spies who have been paid and plied by Moscow Center for decades. The Obama administration seemed more embarrassed about it than the Russians, rushing to reassure the world that this will not affect our new relationship with Russia one bit. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon explained that “We would like to get to the point where there is just so much trust and cooperation between the United States and Russia that nobody would think of turning to intelligence means to find out things that they couldn’t find out in other channels.” It’s not easy to divert the Obama administration from its pursuit of “engagement.” Not even repeated slaps in the face will do the trick. Consider another diplomatic initiative — that toward Syria. This week, it was revealed that Syria had obtained a sophisticated radar system from Iran (in violation of U.N. sanctions — but don’t hold your breath for an emergency Security Council session). The radar would make it much more difficult for Israeli jets to fly undetected over Syrian air space en route to Iran. If shared with Hezbollah, a Syrian/Iranian client based in Lebanon, the radar would vastly improve the accuracy of Hezbollah’s missiles and bolster its air defenses. This is merely the latest signal of contempt by Syria for the Obama administration’s sedulous courting. Two months ago, Israel announced that Syria had transferred SCUD missiles (range: 400 miles) to Hezbollah, permitting the terror group to hit Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Dimona, and Ben Gurion International Airport. In 2006, when Hezbollah launched a war against Israel, its missiles had a range of 20 to 60 miles. But, never daunted, the administration interpreted this provocation as proof that even more friendliness was required of us. “Sending an ambassador to Syria who can press the Syrian government in a firm and coordinated fashion ... is part of our strategy to achieve comprehensive peace in the region,” the White House explained. Since January 2009, a procession of high-level officials, including Under Secretary of State William Burns, Sen. John Kerry, and George Mitchell (three times) has trooped to Damascus for talks with

Bashar al-Assad. The administration also announced the appointment of an ambassador, Robert Ford, for the first time in five years (though Republicans have so far effectively blocked him). The Obama White House also relaxed export licenses, invited the Syrian deputy foreign minister to Washington, and withdrew U.S. objections to Syrian admission to the World Trade Organization. Kerry stressed that his visit and the decision to send an ambassador to Damascus reflect the fact that engagement with Syria is “a priority at the highest levels of our government.” Others drank the Kool-Aid as well. Newsweek magazine praised the engagement initiative as recently as February, saying, “President Bashar al-Assad may finally be ready to play ball ... Those small steps (like Ford’s appointment, for example) are exactly the thing Syria is looking to respond to.” Or not. Just a day after Secretary of State Clinton conveyed to Damascus Obama’s hope that the Syrians would draw closer to the U.S. and distance themselves from Iran, al-Assad hosted Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for a lavish state visit. At a grinning joint press conference, the two competed to spew insults at the United States. Ahmadinejad looked forward to a new Middle East “without Zionists and without colonialists.” Al-Assad, referring snidely to Clinton, said, “I find it strange how they talk about Middle East stability and at the same time talk about dividing (our) two countries.” Regarding the suggestion that Syria distance itself from Iran, al-Assad noted coyly that he must not have understood “maybe because of translation error or limited understanding.” Apparently, al-Assad was too subtle for this crowd. For even after this, and even after the SCUDs, and even despite the radar, the Obama administration truckling continues. According to the June 15 Wall Street Journal, “The State Department has dispatched a high-level diplomatic and trade mission to Syria, according to senior U.S. officials, marking the latest bid by the Obama administration to woo President Bashar alAssad away from his strategic alliance with Iran.” This is beyond naive. This is profoundly dangerous. Who can possibly fail to notice that the Obama administration not only imposes no costs on those who cross it, but redoubles its efforts to appease? Sunset Sounds kicks off series THIS-N-THATS

LARRY MURDOCK Guest Columnist In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day ••• Hope you enjoyed Thursday’s first session of Sunset Sounds with the Tom Holladay Orchestra. This was the first musical group of the season to be followed next Thursday by New Wine Gospel Quartet. This group recently played at the “Bandstand” on Spring Daze. I’ve mentioned here before how much I love good Southern Gospel music. I will take the opportunity here to make note that Greenwood Baptist Church and Pastor Mike Ferguson will be hosting the “Kingsmen” quartet on July 18 at 6 p.m. No admission, but a love offering will be taken. I hope to be there, hope you will, too. The church is located at 1010 Lexington Av. ••• Gayle and I use the Daily Guidepost and the Upper Room for our daily devotionals. I was rather amused by Daniel Schantz (Daily Guidepost) material in a recent devotion. Daniel is enjoying his 42nd year teaching at Central Christian College in Moberly, Mo. In a recent devotional, he speaks of the good things about getting older; one of them is that you get to see how it all turns out. He relates that some of his classmates from school days have surprised him. The knock-out blonde who always had a dozen boyfriends is seven times less appealing. Then there was the overconfident guy who has made a career of job-hopping, each job worse than the last. The slowest boy in the class is already retired, with three sources of income. He indicates that some

of his classmates were openly hostile to religion back then but now they have fond faith in God. He wrote, “All of these changes have reminded him that it’s not over until it’s over. As long as we are alive, we can improve our lives.” Nuf said! ••• I know that I have written about the “Flight of Honor” program. I am so impressed with the program that I want to continue to share the “Flight of Honor” program with you. Gayle and I attended the “Senior Links” program at Thomasville Medical Center a couple of weeks ago. They had a very interesting presentation on the “Flight of Honor” program. Jeff Sims, a primary contact for the Flight of Honor program, presented the program that featured a video about how it started in Hendersonville and has spread. You might recall that I have previously written about several Thomasville veterans who have had the opportunity to take the flight to Washington to see the memorials and other sights. Gayle and I, and several other Thomasville residents, have applied to be “guardians” on a future flight. Fall flight dates will be on Sept. 18, Oct. 6, and Oct. 30. Departure time is 8:30 a.m. and return time is 8 p.m. George Atkinson, Piedmont Center resident is scheduled to go on the Oct. 30 flight. If you are interested in learning more about this program, get on the Internet and enter: www.honorair.com. It is a very interesting video. It tells the story of how the program started in Hendersonville. Please remember those fall flight dates, Sept. 18, Oct. 6, Oct. 30, and make it a point to drive to the Piedmont Triad International Airport to welcome home a plane load of veterans returning from a “Flight of Honor,” enter the passenger terminal where you will form a welcoming line for the returning veterans. You will have a lump in your throat, a tear in your eye and a heart full of appreciation for our WWII Veterans. ••• I recently noticed an obituary for Joe Louis McKnight in the Times. Joe was in the concrete business and owned a vacant lot on Martin Luther King Drive. Prior to my retirement as the Police Chief several years ago, I approached Joe about building a small park on that piece

of land. The purpose was to have a playground for the children in that area. This was a part of our “Community Policing” program. Joe cordially agreed to allow the park to be built. It bears the name “MLK Park.” It would be nice if Joe’s name would be added to the park as a memoriam to him for his gift of the land. ••• A loyal reader of the Times and this column shared “Interesting Trivia” with me. I do find them interesting and will share a couple here and in the future columns. Question: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs? Answer: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called “pygg.” When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as “pygg banks.” When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a bank that resembled a pig. And it caught on. Question: Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches, while pennies and nickels do not? Answer: The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren’t notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave. More next time! •••

in Annas’ absence Thursday. Due to the success of last year’s program, the Cal Ripken Foundation awarded the Thomasville Boys & Girls Club a $10,000 grant to continue this year. “It’s a great program, just to get officers to come out and work with kids so they’re not afraid,” Bannister said. “I see it as a gang prevention program because it helps build healthy relationships, and teaches life lessons and skills. It means a lot of the kids.” This year, volunteering officers will meet with children on the diamond two days a week for seven weeks, and hope to culminate the season with a game against the Lexington Boys & Girls Club. This is the first year the Lexington Police Department has been involved with the program. “We enjoy teaching them aspects of the game,” Widener said. “The are a good bunch of kids. They learn some new skills and get to be outside and get some energy out.” Strawn Wilson, who celebrated his 10th birthday Thursday by throwing out the first pitch, is in his second year of the Badges for Baseball program. “It’s fun,” Wilson said. “I like being with my friends and they [officers] taught me how to catch the right way.” The program is open to all children in Thomasville. To learn more, call TPD at 475-4260. To make a donation to this or any other Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs program, call Bannister at 472-7800.

Grice said other churches and non-profits should use a committee to oversee how funds are allocated to avoid being taken advantage of. “We would advise churches and non-profits to have oversight by a committee of three of more people,” said Grice. “They should have regular and consistent checks and balances so that way everybody can stay friends and there won’t be the opportunity for anything like this to happen again. At a church, people may be too trusting. If you have a committee you won’t have that happen.” Sechriest is scheduled to appear in court on July 21.

BY DANIEL KENNEDY Times Correspondent The Post 87 HiToms opened the first round of the Area III American Legion playoffs with a bang Thursday night, taking Game 1 of a best-of-three series against Surry County with a thorough 9-1 rout. Connor Scarborough pitched a gem for High Point, breezing through eight shutout innings while allowing just three hits. He struck out eight. “When you have confidence in the guy on the mound, you’re going to step your game up,” Post 87 coach Rob Shore said. “You’ve got somebody like Connor Scarborough, who was just mowing them down tonight and had a very low pitch count, with that type of swagger and confidence. It’s that type of trait everybody (feeds off of).” Scarborough set the tone of the game in the opening innings, striking out four of the first six hitters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the fifth. DICK JONES Outdoor Columnist It’s remarkable how many shooting events happen within a 50 mile radius. Every weekend here in North Carolina, there are rifle, shotgun, and pistol events that range from national level competitions to friendly, informal shoots for entry level competitors. Some of those events require only a minimum of equipment that the average shooter would have. Others require more specialized gear like spotting scopes and shooting mats. The really great thing is how friendly and interested competitive shooters are in sharing their sport. At almost every small match that requires specialized equipment, there’s someone there that’s glad to loan what you need and don’t have. Some clubs even keep equipment for just that purpose. A few weeks ago, I

was made aware of a change in the rules for NRA Conventional High Power Rifle that makes the sport much more attractive to new competitors. In the past, almost all High Power matches required the shooter to use iron sights. Most iron sighted rifles don’t have sights suited for the accurate, repeatable adjustments that are required for that kind of shooting and many potential new shooters are intimidated at the prospect of accurate shooting at 200 yards and more without a scope. The “new” rule change allows the use of scoped rifles in “across the course” High Power Rifle matches. My first reaction was that a tradition had been forever lost and then I considered the facts. High Power Rifle matches have been shot with iron sights for over 100 years and when they began, scope sighted rifles just weren’t practical. Now, iron sighted rifles aren’t really practical and optical sights are on 98 percent of rifles used for hunting. In fact, almost all military rifles used in combat now have optical sights. The idea behind the NRA’s promotion of competitive shooting is to get people involved in shooting and marks-

Sports Editor GRAHAM — Dale Moser summed up Thomasville-Davidson’s Area III American Legion first round playoff game with Burlington-Graham in one sentence. “It was one of those games where I don’t care what you threw, they were hitting it,” said the Post 284 coach, after Post 63 walloped his squad 12-1 in seven innings in Game 1 of their best-of-three series. Burlington banged out 12 hits, drilled three home runs and virtually tore the cover off the ball spraying it everywhere on the diamond. Thomasville’s bats were lively in the first few innings — a positive sign to coach Moser. The only problem, though, was the ball went right to the Post 63

defense. Thomasville went down in order the first three innings. Burlington, on the other hand, had no problem at all finding holes against Post 284 hurler Ryan Coleman. The former East Davidson standout masterfully escaped two jams in the first and third innings, only allowing a pair of runs. In the fourth, Brock Phillips singled home Justin Weavil to steal a run back, giving a positive vibe to the patrons who made the trek to Graham. That change in emotions would take a downward spiral in the bottom half, as the tight playoff game turned into a rout for the home team. Coleman worked the corners effectively, but Post 63 did whatever it wanted to with his pitches.

NASCAR Hall nominees announced NASCARMEDIA.COM DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR announced today the list of 25 nominees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s second induction class. From that list, five inductees will be chosen via a process that includes a nationwide fan vote on NASCAR.COM. The 2011 inductee class will be announced in October and honored next year at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. This year’s inaugural induction class consisted of Dale Earnhardt, Junior Johnson, Bill France Jr., Bill France Sr. and Richard Petty. The second round of nominees, which again includes many of the sport’s legendary names, were selected by a 21person nominating committee consist-

ing of representatives from NASCAR, the NASCAR Hall of Fame and track owners from both major facilities and historic short tracks. The committee’s votes were tabulated by accounting firm Ernst & Young. Joining the 21-person committee this year is Jody Deery, owner of acclaimed quarter-mile short track Rockford (Ill.) Speedway. She replaces Tom Blackwell, former owner of Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway, who passed away in April. The HOF’s inductees will be determined by the Voting Panel, which has 53 members – the entire Nominating Committee, media members, manufacturer representatives, retired competitors (drivers, owners, crew chiefs) and recognized industry

The barrage clearly left the Thomasville squad deflated as they watched the one-run deficit balloon to nine. “He (Coleman) is one of our better pitchers so I left him in there,” said Moser. “I don’t think he pitched a bad game. to bridge that gap, God required the sacrifice of His son. That’s how passionate He is about having a relationship and friendship with us. God has paved the way for us to have friendship with Him. We can be ourselves with God, totally open and honest about all we feel and think. He knows us better than we know ourselves anyway, so why don’t we relate to Him like we do our best friends? Why do we only call out to God when things are going badly? God wants to hear from us when things are going well. He also wants to talk with us about the everyday things of life. The trouble is not on God’s side, it’s us. We have to make the effort to spend time with God, to open our hearts to the friendship that He desires. I want to encourage you to spend some time with God. He wants to be your best friend. He will never leave or forsake you. He still wants to be your friend even after you have failed Him. He does expect you to turn from doing wrong. He’s got a plan and purpose for your life that will bring you fulfillment. He expects you to give your best, live with integrity, and to share with others the hope of your salvation. Friendship with God is a high calling, available for every believer, and filled with eternal rewards. Doug Creamer teaches Marketing at East Davidson High School. liam, Antioch Christian Church’s Public Relations Director. This event will be celebrated with women in white, an all female choir, and speaker Judge Denise Hartsfield.

Someone once said that the way to a friend’s house is never long. They don’t know who my friend is and how far away he lives. I took my annual trek up to Sparta last week. It is an annual pilgrimage to a place of rest, relaxation, and time spent with a good friend. As the last few weeks of school grind to an end, looking forward to spending the day with my friend in Sparta helps me make it through. This friend and I taught at Elkin High School for five years where we forged our friendship. We shared stories, helped each other maintain sanity, and encouraged each other as we struggled through the daily grind. The friendship we created is something we both work to maintain, something we both value highly. This year’s trek up the mountain was interrupted by a stop in Elkin where my friend’s wife has started a new business. I wanted to see her new shop and offer some encouragement to her in her new adventure. She has a unique store that I believe will bring her both joy and success. What is unique about this couple is that I have developed a friendship with both of them. The three of us really enjoy talking, laughing, and sharing our lives together. What is great about being with them is that I can just be myself and talk about my true feelings, good or bad, and they still love and accept me. They are both highly valued friends. I was talking to another good friend on Sunday afternoon and I asked him what qualities

he looked for in a friend. He gave me three. First, he likes people who are positive and encouraging. Second, he likes people with whom he can drop his guard and be real; who will still love and accept him. Third, he wants to be around people who are serious about growing spiritually, who are living what they believe. Imagine what great friendships we would all have if we lived like that. Recently I was reading an interview with a traveling minister from England. I have heard the man speak on several occasions and he is spellbinding. He told the interviewer that he tried to spend four months a year in meditation with God. Wow, imagine that, four months not traveling and speaking, but alone with God. Now that is an example of spending time with his real best friend. Why do we have trouble thinking of God as our friend? Many people have this wrong image of God as a wrathful, vengeful being who is looking for opportunities to get us. They think He is waiting for us to make a mistake so He can punish us. Others possess an equally wrong imagine of God as a marshmallow sweet, loving God who never corrects or disciplines His children. He loves and has no other emotion. God has every emotion from love to hate. He hates sin because it separates us from Him. He does love every person, more deeply and completely than any of can comprehend, but He is holy and righteous and we are far from that. In order

SPORTS RULES From page B1

manship and the more accessible the sport is the easier it is to achieve that goal. Originally, High Power Rifle competition used firearms similar to those used by the military or by hunters eventually, as time passed the guns became more specialized and a competitive competition rifle no longer resembled a hunting or military rifle except externally. The rules change allowing scopes certainly brings currently popular styles of rifles into eligibility. Thanks to North Carolina’s Durham Rifle and Pistol Club, there’ll be awards this year for scoped rifles in the National High Power Rifle Championships for the first time. So, what do you need to shoot a High Power Rifle match now that your scoped rifle is eligible? You’ll need a rifle with the ability to reload with at least five rounds rapidly since the rapid fire part of the match requires a reload. This means that for practical purposes, the gun must be magazine fed. Of course, the most popular rifle in the world today is the AR 15 and its variations. AR 15 platform guns comprise most of the guns in High Power competition today. You’ll need some kind of shooting mat or ground cloth, a spotting scope, and a luxury would be a padded shooting coat. Chances are, you can arrange to use someone else’s equipment if you call the match director in advance. As I said, competitive shooters are generally generous to new prospective shooters. Most courses of fire require 50 rounds for record and you’ll want to shoot a few sighter shots to confirm your zero. Two matches in our immediate area are Piedmont Handgunner’s Assn. and the Rowan County Wildlife Assn. PHA’s match is shot at 200 yards and the RCWA Match is at 100 yards. The course of fire is: • Ten shots standing, slow fire in a time limit of ten minutes • Ten shots sitting, rapid fire, in a time limit of 60 seconds • Ten shots prone, rapid fire, in a time limit of 70 seconds • Twenty shots prone slow fire in a time limit of twenty minutes. Typical rifles at these matches include M1s M1As and a few bolt actions, but most are AR platform guns. The AR

15 type guns are made by dozens of US companies and are reasonably priced, easy to shoot and amazingly accurate. Ammunition is reasonably priced as well. If you decide to get involved, you can practice with smallbore or air guns and increase your skills at a greatly reduced cost. Competitive shooting is good practice for hunting and a great recreational use for firearms, but most important, it’s fun. If you undertake

it with the intention of improving yourself and not worrying about how much better the masters can shoot, you’ll make yourself a better shooter, make new friends, and improve your skills. Of course, if you lean towards shotgun or pistol shooting, there are great opportunities in our area for that as well. Look for more shooting opportunities in our area in my columns. I hope to see you on the range.

ahead of hitters, he developed an easy rhythm and pounded the strike zone early before utilizing his breaking ball to put them away late. “I had more velocity early on. I was just trying to get the fastball in there,” Scarborough said. “When they zoned in on my fastball, I just started mixing it up, trying to keep them off-balance.” Offensively, the action picked up in the third inning, when Houston Ison scored the first run of the game by hustling home courtesy of an error at

Two batters later, Kevin Sanders broke the contest open with a two-run triple and was followed in line by Ben Fultz, who added an RBI double to make it 4-0 in favor of Post 87. “These guys really get along well. We’re really starting to gel,” said Shore. “This time of year is always the best to get hot. We started off the year on fire, cooled down and now we’re starting to pick it back up.” The HiToms scored another run in the fifth, two in the sixth and David Coffey added a solo home run in the team’s two-run seventh. SPORTS

No matter if you are new to the sport or an old pro, most golfers have the same complaint: finding time to hit the golf course. That’s why for most of us, getting in a round of golf is relegated to weekends or vacations. Unfortunately, the weekends are the busiest times for most courses and securing a good tee time can be tough. By arming yourself with some tricks of the trade, however, there are several ways to land the best tee times, even on the busiest weekends. “It’s all about knowing how to stay a step ahead when competing with other golfers for tee times. This way you can book the best times before others get to them, or can choose to play during lighter periods,” says Ron Ward, General Manager of ActiveGolf. com, a part of Active Network, a Web site that allows users to book tee times at hundreds of golf courses across North America. Here are some tips from Ward on how to get those prized tee times: • Beat Them to It: Most golfers book tee times 2.4 days in advance for most courses, according to statistics from ActiveGolf.com. So book your spot on Monday or Tuesday for the coming weekend, instead of procrastinating until later in the week. You’ll have more choices of courses and tee times and lower prices available. • Heat it Up: Golfers

golfers are sleeping. • Take a Drive: Go off the beaten path. Drive a bit out of your way to find less-crowded courses. You’ll broaden your horizons and vary your game. And you might even improve your game by tackling new challenges. • Pony Up: When all else fails, shell out a little more green to get on the green. The best times at top courses will cost more than other tee times. So dig deeper if you really want that certain spot on a busy weekend. “Just like knowing what club to hit off the tee, being educated on the best ways to book a tee time gives you an edge over the rest of the field,” adds Ward. “And once you’ve landed a choice tee time, make sure to give yourself ample time to stretch out, warm up the swing and get a feel for the greens.”

tend to book tee times more in advance during months when there is more sunshine. Be willing to play in the heat and sun, when others are retiring to the clubhouse. • Book Lighter Times: According to Ward, most golfers crowd onto the course at the same times — typically between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on most courses. So, the early bird or late risers usually can get a tee time, even when booking later in the week. • Tap the Web: By going online to book your time, you can move quickly and avoid hassles. For example, ActiveGolf.com enables users to book tee times at hundreds of golf courses and even offers last minute tee time specials and daily emails offering discounted times. Booking online also enables you to secure tee times even in the middle of the night, when other
