FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What is the purpose of this field advisory? A: The purpose of this field advisory is to ensure HPE sales representatives have the necessary information on the OS Support Matrix and HPE Policies that govern the HPE Solutions for SAP HANA. We recommend you take this opportunity to review this advisory in detail and discuss OS upgrade options with your customers. Q: Does this advisory apply just to SAP HANA appliances, or does it also cover SAP HANA Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI) solutions? A: This advisory applies to both HPE SAP HANA appliances, which include the HPE ConvergedSystem portfolio, and the HPE SAP HANA TDI Solutions and Base Configurations. Q: Where will information on future OS version support or recertification be published? A: Additional details and timelines on future OS version certifications or any planned updates to the OS support matrix will be communicated throughout the product lifecycle. This living document will be posted to the SAP HANA Sales Briefcase on Seismic and kept updated. Check back frequently to ensure you have the latest information. Q: What is HPE’s policy on recertifying the HPE Solutions for SAP HANA on newer OS versions? A: ConvergedSystem customers, HPE will make available a service to bring existing appliances up to the latest HPE available OS revision after HPE has certified the OS update for use with SAP HANA. HPE will review major and minor revisions for suitability for the ConvergedSystem lifecycle, and will make appropriate versions available to customers. Not all major or minor revisions will be certified. Unless not possible per SAP certification processes, HPE will ensure at all times there is a major/minor version available that is supported by the OS vendor either in mainstream or extended support. TDI Customers: HPE will support any new OS revision certified by SAP, and enable customers to implement on their own. For customers wanting OS upgrade assistance, please contact HPE Pointnext Services A&PS local consulting for custom quoting. Customers may upgrade to new OS versions once SAP certification has been published. Q: What ConvergedSystem generations may need a major OS Upgrade? A: ConvergedSystem using Intel Ivy Bridge or Haswell architecture were originally shipped with versions of SLES for SAP 11.x or RHEL 6.x, and will require a major OS upgrade in order to be able to run latest versions of SAP HANA including SAP HANA 2.0. ConvergedSystem using Broadwell and Skylake architectures shipped originally with SLES for SAP 12.x or RHEL 7.x and are therefore already on the latest available major OS. Westmere appliances will not have a certified major OS upgrade available. The last HPE Certified OS version for Westmere based systems is SLES for SAP 11 SP4. Q: Where can customers access the most current and accurate information on which OS versions are supported on the HPE SAP HANA Solutions? A: SAP’s Certified SAP HANA Hardware Directory is the only definitive source of customer viewable information on which OS versions are supported on different HPE SAP HANA Solutions. Operating System compatibility matrices published in this document are meant for easy field and sales reference only, and therefore, always refer to SAP’s Certified SAP HANA Hardware Directory for the latest information. Q: How is the compatibility of particular OS versions determined with a specific version of SAP HANA Support Pack Stack (SPS)? A: SAP determines the compatibility of OS versions with SAP HANA SPS releases. Always refer to the SAP HANA SPS Revision Notes for information on the minimum OS version required. Refer to the SAP HANA note 2235581 on supported operating systems, and the following OS version specific SAP notes: SUSE SLES for SAP: • SUSE SLES for SAP 15 (GA, SP1)—SAP Note 2684254 • SUSE SLES for SAP 12 (GA, SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4, and SP5)—SAP Note 2205917 • SUSE SLES for SAP 11 SP4—SAP Note 2240716 • SUSE SLES for SAP 11 SP3—SAP Note 1954788 • SUSE SLES for SAP 11 SP2—SAP Note 1824819

RHEL for SAP HANA: • RHEL 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5 and 7.6 for SAP HANA—SAP Note 2292690 • RHEL 6.7 for SAP HANA—SAP Note 2247020 • RHEL 6.6 for SAP HANA—SAP Note 2136965 • RHEL 6.5 for SAP HANA—SAP Note 2013638 Q: How can customers determine if a particular OS version will be supported with a future SAP HANA Support Pack Stack (SPS)? A: SAP will maintain supportability of a particular OS version for as long as that OS is supported by the OS vendor. As an example, the Long Term Service Pack Support (LTSS) for the SUSE SLES for SAP 11 SP4 ends on March 31, 2022, and therefore, after that date, SAP will no longer support this OS. For a list of supported operating systems please see the SAP note: 2235581—SAP HANA: Supported Operating Systems. Q: Where can I find more information on the lifecycle dates for SUSE and Red Hat? A: Refer to the links below for the most current information: • SUSE SLES for SAP OS Lifecycle Dates and Information • RHEL for SAP HANA OS Lifecycle Dates and Information Some information on the RHEL link may or may not apply to RHEL for SAP HANA. See Overview of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for SAP HANA Subscription for more details. Q: What are the benefits for customers to upgrade their OS version? A: The first reason to upgrade a minor OS version is that the current version running has reached end of general support. To maintain support coverage for reactive events and availability of patches, especially security patches, customers should upgrade to a currently supported OS version. Another reason to upgrade may be in a reactive support event where an upgrade will resolve the support issue. Another reason for upgrading is when SAP HANA service packs requires a minor version higher than the one currently in use. For example, SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 00 offerings require a minimum OS version of SUSE SLES for SAP 12 SP1 or RHEL 7.2 for SAP HANA, while SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02 requires a minimum OS version of SUSE SLES for SAP 12 SP3 or RHEL 7.3 for SAP HANA, necessitating an OS upgrade. For SAP HANA minimum operating systems, please refer to SAP note: 2235581—SAP HANA: Supported Operating Systems. Q: Why is a new OS install required when upgrading from SUSE SLES for SAP 11 SPx to SUSE SLES for SAP 12 SPx, or from RHEL for SAP HANA 6.x to RHEL for SAP HANA 7.x? A: HPE recommends customers perform a fresh OS install when upgrading between major versions of an OS, for example when upgrading from SUSE SLES for SAP 11 SPx to SUSE SLES for SAP 12 SPx or from RHEL 6.x to RHEL for SAP HANA 7.x. HPE recommends a fresh OS install because it ensures the best approach for the greatest reliability and supportability of the environment. A fresh OS installation instead of an OS upgrade is required for the following reasons: • For customers wanting to upgrade their systems from HANA 1.0 to HANA 2.0, SAP recommends a new installation. Refer to SAP HANA Master Guide—SAP HANA Platform 2.0 SPS 04 for more information (see section 5.5.2.1.1 Upgrade the Operating System). • OS vendors introduce several configuration and architectural changes to their software across major versions, which when combined with changes in the SAP HANA software stack can create several compatibility issues which cannot be fixed without a clean OS install, such as: – Changes to the filesystem or the filesystem layout will require resizing, which can only be done during a clean OS installation. – Any required changes to the root filesystem, such as changing partition sizes cannot be done without a fresh OS installation. • Troubleshooting and resolving these issues may require a collaborative effort between HPE, SAP, and the OS vendor, leading to potentially extended downtime periods for the customer. • Recommended by SUSE: Source: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Documentation. • Recommended by Red Hat: Source: Red Hat Knowledge Base—“Does Red Hat support upgrades between major versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux?”

Page 7

Q: What is the HPE strategy for OS upgrades to SUSE SLES for SAP 12 SPx or RHEL for SAP HANA 7.x from previous major versions? A: For the reasons articulated previously, and based on HPE and SAP best practices, for HPE ConvergedSystem 500 or HPE ConvergedSystem 900 customers, the HPE strategy is to perform a fresh OS installation when upgrading to SUSE SLES for SAP 12 SPx or RHEL for SAP HANA 7.x from previous major versions. For TDI and Base Configurations customers where an OS upgrade can be done by the customer or their systems integrator, HPE strongly recommends a new OS installation to avoid extended downtime, data loss or compatibility issues. Q: Is a fresh OS installation more disruptive than an OS upgrade? A: No, in the context of SAP HANA use cases, a fresh OS installation is recommended to minimize disruption, errors and to reduce downtime. In fact, an OS upgrade can be disruptive and unstable. Depending on the particular OS version installed, upgrading to the latest OS version may require multi-step, interim upgrade processes (which in turn may cause disruption and increased downtime), due to the absence of a direct upgrade path being available. Q: How is version compatibility maintained for any ecosystem elements including Dual Purpose, System Replication, MultiSID, Workload Aware Security for Linux (WASL) and Serviceguard as well as third-party applications and interfaces configured on the appliance in the event of an OS upgrade? A: With major OS version changes, combined with changes in new versions of SAP HANA, several compatibility issues may arise. Customers are responsible for validating version compatibility for HPE ecosystem elements installed on their HPE SAP HANA. Customers are responsible for verifying, validating and maintaining version compatibility for any third-party applications installed on their HPE SAP HANA infrastructure being upgraded. Neither HPE nor SAP is responsible for ongoing compatibility with any third party applications in the event of an OS or a software upgrade. For all OS upgrade scenarios, customers must work with their third party software vendor to ensure ongoing support and compatibility with the new OS version being installed. Customers are responsible for documenting all configuration details for any third-party software prior to an OS installation, and then reinstalling those applications post OS upgrade or installation. Q: What choices does a customer have when an OS version goes End of Support? Is upgrading to a new version of the OS the only option available to customers? A: As customers approach the End of Support of their OS version, there are 3 alternative choices, each with impacts and benefits. 1. Continue with the existing OS version: This approach avoids a disruptive upgrade, but the OS would now be in an unsupported state. In the case of a support event related to the OS, the customer will be required to upgrade the OS to a currently supported version, adding to the total time to resolve the support event. 2. Upgrade to current OS version: This is the recommended approach, but it is disruptive as it requires a planned outage. There is also a service price for the upgrade. Some customers may have pre-paid credits that can be used for this upgrade service. 3. Obtain extended support coverage: In certain situations, customers that do not want to upgrade to a new OS version and want to prolong the use of their current OS version, may be able to procure extended support coverage. Customers considering this alternative need to understand the deliverables of the extended coverage as they are reduced from general support deliverables. Refer to the links below for more details on support programs including additional fees and availability dates by OS vendor: – SUSE SLES for SAP Long Term Service Pack Support (LTSS) – RHEL for SAP HANA Extended Updated Support (EUS) Some information on the RHEL link may or may not apply to RHEL for SAP HANA. See Overview of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for SAP HANA Subscription for more details.

Q: For a customer that has decided to obtain SUSE LTSS, do they purchase it from HPE or from SUSE directly? A: A customer purchasing SUSE LTSS should purchase the LTSS subscription from the same vendor where they purchased their initial SUSE OS subscription. For ConvergedSystem for SAP HANA, the SUSE OS subscription is sold by HPE, so customers would purchase LTSS from HPE. Q: For customers requiring SUSE LTSS coverage, when should a customer purchase the SUSE LTSS subscription? A: SUSE LTSS will provide extended support coverage for an OS version that has gone end of general support. As such, customers do not need to purchase LTSS subscriptions until their current OS version is out of support. And, they may end their LTSS subscription at the point in time that they upgrade their OS version to a currently supported version. Q: How do customers purchase SUSE LTSS? A: SUSE LTSS is sold by HPE via support contracts. Please contact your regional HPE Pointnext Services HANA support lead. Q: How do customers initiate an OS version upgrade on a ConvergedSystem for SAP HANA appliance? A: HPE Pointnext Services has a variety of services for ConvergedSystem for SAP HANA appliance OS version upgrades. These services vary depending on the OS version level. Please contact your HPE Pointnext Services sales representative for assistance. Q: How do customers initiate an OS version upgrade on HPE TDI? A: HPE Pointnext Services has the capability to perform OS version upgrades for TDI with a custom engagement. Please contact your HPE Pointnext Services sales representative for assistance. Q: Who should I contact if I have questions? A: Bret Gibbs, document author, at: bret.gibbs@hpe.com, +1 (832)-502-6535. Q: Who can I work with for HPE Pointnext Services options?
