INTERVIEW
AN INTERVIEW WITH NADINE MIRADA BY HARSHIT Hello Nadine, how are you? Thanks for being our cover girl for our …. issue of 2020. Are you working at the moment? Thank you so much for choosing me as your cover girl. Actually I still work a lot with Guess/Marciano. And there are a lot of shootings and single projects for different brands who want to get the extra glamorous touch. Emotionally I have definitely matured since I was younger. I can say with complete honesty that 10 years ago I would have hoped and dreamed to be exactly who I am today. I feel confident in myself, my body and my capabilities and love to share that with others. Physically I am really comfortable being in me - even despite the rejection I experienced early on in my career. Self care has always been a huge priority of mine. I go to sleep early, work out, stay away from alcohol and nourish my body with healthy foods. I believe this is a must for everyone no matter what your career goal is. Was it harder to be a model growing up? I am always positive. In my teenage the model industry was not open for girls like me. I was too special. But I took the chance finished my college and started university. That pause in my career was good for me. Due to the fact that my body differs from the “classic model” type, I am incredibly proud to be a famous model today and break that mold. I feel like I am a symbol for millions of women around the world who have a body like mine - we should be proud and own it! What was your first experience as a model? Were you nervous? I was in front of the camera for the first time at 3 years old. But as I got older, the industry just wasn’t very open to or accepting of healthy, natural curves. But I am really happy that the mentality of the industry has changed and I believe that my time is now. Even though I might be a bit older than most models, I am happy that I took the time to get a good education and develop my personality...both of which are really invaluable qualities to me. Did you always want to be a model? This is definitely a YES! it was my biggest dream in my entire life! What do you think about the message that the fashion world is giving to all women around the world nowadays? I feel that Americans are more open and courageous to take chances and “go against the norm” than Europeans. What’s your message for all the women around the world who don’t believe in themselves? Set clear goals and stay focused on them. And remember that sometimes it’s the things that you don’t do in order to stay true to yourself and your values that lead to success in the end.

INTERVIEW
What fashion advice do you have for curvier women? Do not hide or be ashamed of your curves! An outfit always looks great when worn with personality and confidence - both of which have nothing to do with body type or measurements. But when it comes to actually choosing the outfit, don’t hide your body with oversized, tent-like clothing. Instead, focus on really emphasizing your own, unique silhouette by highlighting parts of your body that you love and want to show off. Overall, a well-groomed appearance, great shoes and carefully selected accessories (especially jewelry) give every outfit that perfect touch. You have exceptionally beautiful skin— What are the three key things you do for your beauty routine? I always have a hydrating mist in my bag.I always remove my makeup thoroughly with a good quality face wash and never forget to moisturize.Water is so important! I drink a lot of water to keep my skin (and body) hydrated, looking young and fresh. Did you struggle a lot to reach your goals? Not really. Of course there are always ups and downs in life. I have a clear vision for my life and always keep my mind focused on my dreams. Maybe this is one of my secrets for a happy life. What helped you in your journey to become a world famous model? I found out, that if I want to shine glamorous on the outside I have to feel happy and self-confident in the inside. Additionally, I’ve learned the importance of remaining true to myself as well as treating others and myself with complete respect and send the love I want to get back. Tell us something we don’t know about you. Mmmhhh… Interesting question. A secret? I love shoes - this is not very special, I know Especially high-heels, the higher the better. What’s the most important catwalk you worked on? Guess and Vienna Fashion week. What’s the most important brand you worked with? GUESS What’s the most beautiful compliment someone can give you? That I shine twice. From inside and outside. Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? As a role model for glamorous natural beautiness in the whole world. Do you travel a lot for work? I do. I have 1 flight a week, what is for an european incredibly much. What’s your favorite place in the world? Monaco, I love the mix between new glam, lifestyle and historic buildings. What do you miss the most about home? My family! What are your goals for 2021? One more Guess Campaign, Dolce&Gabbana
Where can our readers follow your next steps? On Instagram www.instagram.com/NadineMirada Who is your biggest role model? My mom. She’s my heart and soul and greatest support.

Coral Eyewear Unveils Glasses made from Econyl
Sustainability focused start-up Coral Eyewear has become the first UK-based company to launch a collection of glasses and sunglasses made with Econyl regenerated nylon.
The eyewear industry needs to take inspiration from fashion brands such as Tala, Veja and Patagonia in implementing sustainable business models.
The Endangered collection features si unisex designs available in four colours that can be tailored with prescription lenses. Each frame comes accompanied with a recycled plastic case and the frames are shipped in recyclable tubes.
As well as tackling the global plastic problem by using Econyl regenerated nylon, Coral Eyewear is also launching a frame recycling scheme which will become active next year in a bid to ‘close the loop’ on waste within the eyewear industry.
The frames are all made using Econyl regenerated nylon, which is produced by Italian manufacturer Aquafil, from fishing nets from the aquaculture sector and postconsumer waste material such as fabric scraps and carpets. Econyl regenerated nylon can reduce the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90 percent when compared with the same material derived from oil, added Coral Eyewear.
The frames in the Endangered collection come with a 2 year guarantee and after this period they can be returned to Coral Eyewear and Aquafil for recycling.
Coral Eyewear, co-founder George Bailey, said in a statement: “We’ve seen widespread adoption of Econyl and other recycled materials in fashion, swimwear and sportswear for a number of years.
Giulio Bonazzi, chairman and chief executive of Aquafil, added: “Nylon waste for me is not something to be disposed of, but a fantastic resource. We have a responsibility to look beyond our manufacturing and we encourage our brands to consider what happens at the end of their products use in the way Coral Eyewear are doing.” Coral Eyewear’s Endangered Collection is available for purchase online and in selected independent opticians.

ARCHITECTURE
Architects have Designed a Martian City for the Desert outside Dubai
Dubai is a city where firefighters use jetpacks, archipelagos are built from scratch, and buildings climb into the clouds; a slick metropolis in the middle of a vast red desert. Firsttime visitors would be forgiven for thinking they had stumbled onto a film set for a sci-fi movie. Now Dubai is set for what must be its most other-worldly architectural project yet. In 2017, the United Arab Emirates announced its ambition to colonize Mars within the next 100 years. But architects are already imagining what a Martian city might look likeand planning to recreate it in the desert outside Dubai. Mars Science City was originally earmarked to cover 176,000 square meters of desert - the size of more than 30 football fields -- and cost approximately $135 million. Intended as a space for Dubai's Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) to develop the technology needed to colonize Mars, architects Bjarke Ingels Group were asked to design a prototype of a city suitable for sustaining life on Mars -- and then adapt it for use in the Emirati desert. Mars has a thin atmosphere and no global magnetic field, so there's little protection from harmful radiation. Temperature is another problem -- the average on Mars is a chilly -63 degrees C (-81 degrees F). The thin atmosphere also means there's little air pressure, so liquids quickly evaporate into gas; despite freezing temperatures, an unprotected human's blood would boil on Mars. For this unique commission, the architects first had to overcome the immense challenges of creating a design to make the inhospitable environment of Mars habitable.
But according to Jonathan Eastwood, director of the Space Lab at Imperial College London, who's not connected with the Dubai project, the challenges of living on Mars extend far beyond technicalities. "I think the biggest challenge in terms of a sustained presence on Mars is not the engineering [or scientific] challenge, but the human [and] personal one," Eastwood explained. To maintain a comfortable temperature and habitable air pressure, the Martian city would be made up of pressurized biodomes each covered with a transparent polyethylene membrane. Oxygen, made by applying electricity to underground ice, would fill each biodome. As the population on Mars grows, biodomes would be joined together to form villages and eventually form cities in the shape of rings, or "toruses." The city would be powered and heated using solar energy, and the thin atmosphere could actually help the domes maintain their temperature. "Since there is very little atmosphere on Mars, the heat transfer will be very low, meaning that the air inside the domes will not cool down as fast as it would on Earth," said Lange. Buildings would be 3D printed under the domes, using Martian soil, and rooms would extend 20 feet underground, protecting from harmful radiation and meteors. The unearthly design even becomes a little playful in places. "In the future on Mars, you would have skylights in your underground cave that would be like aquariums, with fish swimming around," said Lange. The water-windows would shield the residents from radiation while allowing light to enter the underground rooms. No longer bound by Earth's physics, Martian architecture can take on a whole new form. "There is approximately one-third gravity which means that you can suddenly make columns that are [slimmer] and [have] longer spans of structures," Lange said. "It creates almost like a completely new rule set that you have to follow when designing architecture in space." MBRSC says the Science City is still in the concept stage, and that it hasn't yet settled on a design or architect for the final build, but BIG has already worked out how it would adapt its proposal for the Dubai desert, if selected. In BIG's design, as well as research labs, Mars Science City will contain an educational facility, museum, an amphitheater, and co-working office spac.
As yet, there's no timeline for when construction will begin, or when it will open, but MBRSC says it is currently conducting a detailed study of the specifications, which it will use to develop a revised budget and size for the site. Mars Science City is only one part of the ambitious space program run by Dubai's Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre. Last year it sent its first astronaut into space; this summer it will launch a probe to Mars, and in November it will undertake its first-ever analog mission. The eight-month venture will take place in Russia and one Emirati crewmember will be chosen as part of an international team of six. The mission will test the effects of isolation and confinement on mental and physical health. Other places on Earth used to mimic conditions for space missions include Antarctica's Concordia Station, used to simulate isolation, California's Mojave Desert, which NASA has used to test Mars rovers, and the Moroccan Sahara, used by the European Space Agency as a Mars analog. The MBRSC hopes that, in future, such research could take place in Mars Science City. "This is going to be our platform where we can develop the science [and] the technology that will help us in our future missions to Mars," said Adnan AlRais, Mars 2117 Program Manager at MBRSC. "We want to come up with a totally new facility that will help the international community." To reach its goal of colonization in less than a century, the MBRSC acknowledges enthusiasm for space travel will have to pass down multiple generations. It hopes Mars Science City will inspire the next generation to dream of life on the Red Planet enough to make it a reality.
THE LAUNCH IS PLANNED TO FALL DURING THE BIENNIAL WINDOW WHEN EARTH AND MARS ARE CLOSEST TOGETHER, STARTING IN JULY 2020 AND GOING INTO EARLY AUGUST.
THE MBRSC IS LAUNCHING A MARS PROBE (PICTURED) THIS SUMMER, WHICH WILL REACH THE RED PLANET IN FEBRUARY 2021.

Is This AI-Powered 'Mirror gym' the Future of Home Exercise?
For many Americans, regular exercise is an elusive commitment -- one made at the beginning of January that peters out within weeks or months. Busy work schedules, a lack of motivation and unease towards exercising in public all contribute to the dismal statistic that only around a quarter of adults exercise enough per week. For decades, different variations of home workouts were touted as the solution to hectic lifestyles. In 1982, there was actress Jane Fonda's popular VHS aerobics routines, Billy Blanks's Tae Bo workouts in the 1990s, 14-minute workouts on Bowflex machines, grueling P90x regiments that took off in the aughts and more casual Nintendo Wii Fit routines of the same era. More recently, design and advancements in technology have offered expanded and personalized training options, while reducing the large footprint of most home gyms. In 2018, former ballerina Brynn Putnam released Mirror, a fitness system that allows users to follow along with virtual personal trainers in classes including yoga, cardio and pilates. That same year, entrepreneur Aly Orady launched Tonal, an AI-powered wall-mounted screen that focuses more on strength training. It features an exercise bench and resistance system that uses electromagnetism to simulate weight machines. Forme "gives people access to good instruction (and) training in their own home. As we get older, we have less time to go to the gym," Behar said in a phone interview. "For most people it is hard to motivate yourself to train at home, and it is hard to feel like you're doing it right."
Interest in home exercise has particularly spiked in recent weeks around the world as brick-and-mortar gyms have temporarily shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. Home workout apps have seen a significant uptick in downloads, and trendy brands like Peloton have rolled out free virtual workouts for everyone stuck indoors. One French athlete in quarantine opted to run an entire marathon on his 23-foot balcony.
Though it's too soon to tell if mirror gyms will be the trend of the late 2010s to 2020s, as the unwieldy NordicTrack ski machine was to the 1970s, Behar explained that having a screen in the home can become the basis for more than just fitness, such as shopping or telemedicine.
But beyond the new restrictions affecting daily workout routines, Ward and Behar are tapping into the same concerns that have made every home workout appealing: the ability to save time and sweat in the privacy of one's home. In an era of personal metrics -- where one can measure their heart rate and sleep cycles with smart watches and train for marathons with AI smart sneakers -- Ward and Behar want to optimize exercise through machine learning. Like Tonal, Forme evaluates performance and adjusts weights accordingly. Easy access to performance data also makes it easier to track that progress and stay motivated.
Overall, Behar hopes Forme's design will encourage all types of people, including the elderly and gymshy, to get moving. "Everybody has a different body," he said. "Everybody has different abilities, but everyone can learn, and get better."

The Opus, Zaha Hadid’s Boutique Hotel Project
Dubai is filled with luxurious and unique hotels, but there’s one that is about to make a stand in the Emirates. ME by Melia, which opened on March 1st, is the only boutique hotel in the city to be designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid. The project was first presented as a commercial and retail building in 2007 and was designed as two separate towers, linked by a four-story atrium at the ground floor and an asymmetric bridge above ground, that merge into a cube-shaped structure with stunning views of the outside world, says the Zaha Hadid Architects Firm. “The design conveys the remarkably inventive quality of Zaha Hadid Architects’ work; expressing a sculptural sensibility that reinvents the balance between solid and void, opaque and transparent, interior and exterior,” says Mahdi Amjad, the developer of the hotel. This boutique hotel is one of four projects by Zaha Hadid Architects that were shortlisted for the 2019 World Architecture Festival Awards, as well as the only project directly touched by Zaha Hadid to be completed in Dubai. The iconic architect worked on designs for the interlocking Signature Towers as well as the Dubai Opera House, but unfortunately, these projects were never completed.
