2009 Alliance Annual Report

ALLIANCE FOR EXCELLENCE IN HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE NURSING 2009 ANNUAL REPORT Through the generous support of our corporate partner, Purdue Pharma, the Alliance held its 2nd annual summit in June, 2009 and as before it was very successful. The geriatric advance practice nurses (GAPNA), critical care nurses (AACN), oncology nurses (ONS), long term care nurses (NADONA) and colleges of nurses (AACN) were represented. The outcome of the Summit was a second white paper discussing ways to collaborate. In a brief period of time, collaborative efforts were underway. The Board of Trustees reviewed the information received from the 2008 as well as the 2009 Summits and developed a strategic plan to effect the five main focal points: Strategic integration of palliative care principles in other health care specialties; research; model identification; advocacy and transitional care coordination The four board meetings held in 2009 were productive addressing the common issues noted by the three sister organizations: the economy, healthcare reform and the public policy issues generated as a result, the need to interface with other nursing specialty organizations and finally the commitment to research. The Alliance has built a strong bond, being committed to meeting the needs of our nursing colleagues from other specialties as well as the public at large. Financially, our revenue is limited but our expenses are as well. The main focus of expenditure comes from the planning and implementation of the annual summits. We look forward to moving palliative care forward through collaboration in the years ahead.

HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE NURSES ASSOCIATION 2009 ANNUAL REPORT This report highlights the major achievements accomplished in 2009 by the Board of Directors with the support of the CEO and National Office staff. Mission Statement Development and Adoption. During strategic planning the 2008 Board of Directors identified limitations in the former Mission Statement. NATIONAL BOARD FOR CERTIFICATION OF HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE NURSES (NBCHPN®) 2009 ANNUAL REPORT Highlights and accomplishments of the past year for NBCHPN® include: •

A total of 4,907 hospice and palliative care professionals achieved initial certification or renewed their certification in 2009, bringing the total of number of certificants to over 19,000. • The 2009 NBCHPN® Certificant of the Year Awards were presented in Austin, Texas during the NBCHPN® Certification Recognition Luncheon at the HPNA/AAHPM Annual Assembly March 26. The luncheon included a presentation by Leslie Ann Patry, RN, BScN, MScN with the Canadian Nurses Association on the success of certification study groups. o Carol Matthews, CNS, ACHPN® of Mentor, Ohio was the recipient of the Certified Advanced Hospice and Palliative Nurse (ACHPN®) of the Year Award. o Donna Nolde, MA, CHPN®, of Chandler, Arizona was the recipient of the Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN®) of the Year Award. o Rose Ladue, CHPNA™ of Springfield, Massachusetts was the recipient of the Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing Assistant of the Year Award (CHPNA™). • The 2009-10 Employer of the Year was awarded to Hospice of Southern Illinois. They will be accepting their award at the 2010 Annual Assembly in Boston this March. • In July, NBCHPN® took part, once again, in the annual HPNA-sponsored gathering of Program Directors of graduate nursing schools that offer specialized education in palliative care. NBCHPN® presence at this meeting helps to keep the issues of certification for the APN in palliative care as part of the agenda. • The LP/VN Self-Assessment Exam was developed and became available in February. • NBCHPN® initiated the process of developing a certification exam for pediatric and neonatal palliative care and hospice nurses by convening a panel of pediatric experts to develop the role delineation survey. This was distributed in the fall and results will guide the development of the test content outline in 2010. • NBCHPN® remains a very active member of the accreditation organizations, the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) and the Institute for

Credentialing Excellence (ICE) formerly known as the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA). In October, NBCHPN® took part in the ABNS Research Summit in Baltimore, Maryland. The event brought together 87 participants who represented nursing certification organizations, affiliated credentialing agencies, testing companies and consumer advocates. The purpose of the Summit was to obtain consensus on a unified research agenda in support of nursing certification. We are in the final stages of developing a new testing approach for the renewal of certification by Advanced Practice Nurses called the Situational Judgment Exam (SJE). The SJE uses a series of case-based scenarios to test critical reasoning and clinical application of content knowledge beyond the level of the initial certification exam. It allows for an in-depth assessment of the approach used by the individual to handle the complexity of real-life clinical situations and can test not only assessment and treatment decisions, but also ethical and professional topics, such as team building, communication, public policy, and research. The SJE is designed to be a required component of the recertification process for APNs who will be renewing their certification for 2011. It will be incorporated into the current requirements of the APN HPAR process. Based on feedback from certificants, the Board of Directors voted to allow the RN Hospice and Palliative Alternative Recertification (RN HPAR) process for EVERY renewal cycle. Beginning in 2010, RNs may choose to renew their certification using the RN HPAR option rather than having to sit for the exam every other testing period as was required in the past. NBCHPN® continued to work with its sister organizations, HPNA, HPNF, and the Alliance for Excellence in Hospice and Palliative Nurses, to promote the unified voice of professional membership, certification, research and education. To this end, we provided financial support and were at the table for several projects, including: o The 2009 Alliance for Excellence Summit Meeting built on the successes of the first Summit in 2008 by convening with leaders from five nursing specialty groups. o Portfolio service: HPNA members and NBCHPN® certified professionals now have access to the on-line CE Tracker program. It is a way to keep an all-inclusive record of professional development activities. This record keeping system can be utilized for licensure renewal, resume building and HPAR submission. o NBCHPN® continues to provide funding for certification scholarships and research grants available through Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF).
