Welcome Bold Leadership, Visionary Members and Powerful Results.

That’s who we are and what we do. We are the business community coming together to make our region a better place to live, work and have fun! We can help your business along the way, but we believe great regions have organizations like the Chamber & CREDC leading the way with the collective participation of the businesses, community and government. We have been around since 1884, originally as the Harrisburg Board of Trade, but like everything, we have reinvented ourselves over time. On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors and the CREDC Board of Directors, we thank our visionary members for their membership and/or their investment in CREDC. Without their support, this organization does not happen. Less than 5% of our revenues come from the public sector, the remainder comes from members and investors. Thank you for ongoing support! South Central Pennsylvania is a region on the move. We are the fastest growing region in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We

4

are well positioned for the future with a clear transportation advantage, higher education producing the workforce of the future, great public education, affordability, and a legendary work ethic. We believe, the future is bright, and by working together, we can help build a region that offers powerful results with a great place for the much sought after work-life balance. Our Live the Life campaign (www.livethelifepa.com) tells the story of living and working in our region, shares the experiences of people who have moved here, the quality of life they experience and reasons for our next generation of workforce to stay here or relocate here. Thank you for being a part of inventing a better future for our region! Sincerely,

David E. Black, President & CEO Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC

Please visit TheLifeYouWantPA.com to see an ever-growing and evolving list of job posts.

If our recent college grad, Anna, had known nothing else when making her decision to move to NYC instead of Harrisburg, she should have known this: The Big Apple is (on average) 88.5% more expensive to live in than the Harrisburg, PA region. Breaking that down, this translates to Anna requiring an annual salary exceeding $100,000 to maintain the same standard of living that Ben enjoys making $55,000 per year. And why do we say “on average” above? That’s because the cost of living more than doubles should Anna try to reside directly in Manhattan (not to mention that her apartment will be roughly the size of the bathmat next to Ben’s shower). Overall, according to the PA Department of Labor & Industry, the south central PA region’s cost of living is almost 5% below the national average. CNN Money has a convenient cost of living calculator available. Visit TheLifeYouWantPA.com to see for yourself.

Harrisburg Events, Entertainment, Art & Cuisine

We’re eco-conscious, curious and creative with a strong business community and a wealth of quality educational opportunities. We love our hometown feeling, the abundance of nature, and the easy-access to big cities. We are lucky to have bloggers like Sara Bozich who are passionate about the area and write about all the things and events in Harrisburg that make us cool, hip, relevant and exciting. Things like Restaurant Row on Second and North Streets, Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, and City Island in the summer. Or our first class symphony with a Tony Award winning conductor, renowned youth ballet company, the Susquehanna Art Museum and stunning art shows. The Harrisburg region is truly a vibrant center of artistic, cultural, civic, and entertainment activity. There really is something for everyone. We are also extremely lucky to have a parks and rec department that would make Leslie Knope proud. The best part: Many events are free! If you do get bored, there’s so much within reach! Go ahead and visit. You’ll be back. We know you will.

Strategic Location

The south central region of Pennsylvania is a sweet place to call home, and we’re not just talking about proximity to Hersheypark. Did you know that if you live in the central PA area, you’ll be about a two hour (or less) drive to major metropolitan areas like Balti-

more, Washington DC, and Philadelphia? Add an extra hour to that drive time and you’re in New York City, Pittsburgh, and the Atlantic Ocean (bring your sunscreen)! And if you don’t feel like driving, simply hop on the train or schedule one of the countless day-trip bus tours. This translates to countless opportunities that you can actually

afford because the central PA area boasts a cost of living 4.7% below the national average. Speaking of planes, trains and automobiles, the Harrisburg region has numerous modes of transportation that make travel easy and accessible. So if you’re dreaming of exotic vacations or family visits, they’re within reach. continued 3

RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE

The Harrisburg Region is truly a special place to live, work, play, and raise a family. Families and companies moving into the region easily find outstanding housing opportunities; it’s just a question of where you want to live – urban, suburban, rural, mountain, or river valley. Families looking to settle in the Harrisburg Region will find a host of styles and price ranges to choose from in every community in this large and expansive region we call home. Within just a few minutes of downtown Harrisburg and the Capitol Complex, you’ll find several Cumberland County communities with grand views of the Susquehanna River – in New Cumberland, Lemoyne, and Wormleysburg. Carlisle, in the center of Cumberland County, offers historic homes with rich architecture within walking distance of one of America’s oldest colleges. You’ll find new housing developments, condominiums, and town homes scattered throughout Cumberland County – from Camp Hill to Shippensburg. Dauphin County offers many options. Harrisburg’s numerous suburban communities offer convenient and quick connections to the area’s numerous public and private schools, to health care, and to outstanding shopping options. Urban living in a walkable and historic American city is readily available in and around downtown Harrisburg. Downtown Harrisburg provides its residents with easily reached cultural attractions, restaurants and shopping,

with plenty of public transportation. The region’s large Capitol Complex is one of the region’s most important employment locations and it is located right in the heart of downtown Harrisburg. The historically rich Shipoke neighborhood, south of the Capitol Complex along the Susquehanna River, provides a charming home location just a few minutes walk from everything our capital city has to offer. Perry County, just a few minutes drive north and west of downtown Harrisburg on the west side of the Susquehanna River is completely different from Cumberland and Dauphin Counties: it’s entirely, or almost entirely, rural. Perry County offers hunting, fishing, and recreation of every kind, within a few miles of home. Perry County, which is a similar size to its neighboring counties, has fewer than 50,000 residents. Within its 554 square miles you’ll find fourteen well-preserved covered bridges and seventeen old mills.

EDUCATION

The 565,000 residents of our Greater Harrisburg Region (Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Counties) have access to the finest educational opportunities and facilities of any region in Pennsylvania. The public school system consists of twentythree separate school districts plus two outstanding career and technical schools (for high school juniors and seniors and some adult learners) operated by the school districts. Several Pennsylvania charter schools are also located in the Harrisburg region. In addition to an impressive public school system, many families choose one of the many private/preparatory schools located throughout the region, secular and sectarian, to educate their children. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg operates ten elementary schools throughout the region, as well as two large high schools – Trinity in Camp Hill and Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg. The Harrisburg Region is also blessed with one of the finest community colleges in Pennsylvania, HACC – Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, with its main campus located just north of downtown Harrisburg near the Farm Show Complex. Because students at HACC are sponsored by the area’s school districts, residents of the Harrisburg region attending HACC receive discounted tuition. Since the late 1980s, HACC has grown to six campuses throughout Central Pennsylvania (Gettysburg, Lebanon, Lancaster, York, and the main campus at Wildwood, along with a second campus in Harrisburg’s Midtown). HACC also offers a virtual campus for those students who cannot attend traditional classroom sessions. HACC’s Midtown campus is specifically geared toward helping our area’s residents develop hands-on skills in technology and trade careers. The region’s newest postsecondary educational institution is Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Founded in 2001 to address Central Pennsylvania’s need for increased opportunities for study leading to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, Harrisburg University is a private institution that produces graduates in science and technology disciplines. Harrisburg University collaborates extensively with the Harrisburg School District, especially with

12

the unique Sci-Tech High program in downtown Harrisburg, which offers its students a concentrated STEM program. Penn State Harrisburg, The Capital College is located on a suburban campus in Middletown, eight miles east of Harrisburg. It is an undergraduate college and graduate school of The Pennsylvania State University. Penn State Harrisburg’s campus enrolls more than 4,000 students and offers two associate, 32 baccalaureate, 22 masters, and three doctoral programs.

Harrisburg International Airport

Thanks to an outstanding network of interstate and arterial high-

ways, the Harrisburg Region is recognized by all major national trucking companies and by a significant number of regional and national distribution and logistics companies as one of the East Coast’s most preferred locations. The list of national and regional motor carriers with a physical presence in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Counties reads like a who’s who in the motor carrier industry. Motor carriers and distribution companies are attracted to the Harrisburg Region because of its outstanding highway and freight rail infrastructure. The most important highway routes leading into and out of the region include: I-81, which runs 824 miles from upstate New York at the Canadian border to Tennessee and connects with I-40; I-76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs 360 miles east to west from New Jersey to Ohio and intersects with I-81 at several intersections in Cumberland County and Dauphin County; I-83, which runs 85 miles from Harrisburg and Cumberland County to Baltimore and I-70 in northern Maryland; I-78 which connects with I-81 and runs 144 miles into New Jersey and New York City; PA Route 581, creating the Capital Beltway, connects I-81 to I-83 and I-76; and US Routes 11 and 15, which run north to south through the length of Cumberland and Perry Counties. In addition to our outstanding highway network, Norfolk Southern provides rail freight service to many of the region’s businesses and distribution/ logistics centers. Norfolk Southern’s freight classification yard in Enola, once the world’s largest freight yard, along the west bank of the Susquehanna River, is still one of the nation’s busiest freight yards. Norfolk Southern also operates two major Intermodal Yards in the region – Rutherford Intermodal Yard located in Swatara Township, just east of Harrisburg and Harrisburg Intermodal Yard in Harrisburg. Harrisburg International Airport (HIA), located just south of downtown Harrisburg in Middletown, was the first new airport terminal project to be completed after September 11, 2001, which means it is equipped with the most modern and efficient passenger and baggage screening equipment. The Susquehanna Area Regional

Airport Authority (SARAA) owns and operates Harrisburg International Airport and also owns and operates two regional airports – Capital City Airport in New Cumberland and Franklin County Regional Airport in Chambersburg. Harrisburg International Airport is served by Air Canada, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southern Airways Express, and United Airlines, which provide daily, nonstop service to 13 destinations and one-stop connections to cities around the world. Harrisburg International Airport serves 1.2 million annual passengers. Amtrak service is available in downtown Harrisburg. Amtrak provides an impressive schedule of hourly service to Lancaster, Philadelphia and New York City, as well as daily trains to Pittsburgh. The Harrisburg Amtrak station serves 1.5 million annual passengers.

SHOPPING, DINING, LODGING & TOURISM

The Harrisburg Region provides its residents, and the millions of people who visit our communities, with outstanding opportunities to “have a good time.” The Harrisburg Region is perfect for a day trip from Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York City, Baltimore or Washington – often for a fun day at Hersheypark with a car filled with excited children of all ages; a weekend getaway from anywhere within the Mid-Atlantic region; or a full vacation of exploring, shopping, dining, and enjoying. If plans call for more than a day trip to the Harrisburg Region, first decide on what part of this large region to visit and where to spend the night. If travels include historic Carlisle, perhaps for a weekend to visit the U.S Army Heritage and Education Center at the Carlisle Barracks, there is a hotel or motel within a short distance of this nationally-acclaimed military museum. The acclaimed National Civil War Museum, located high above the City of Harrisburg in Reservoir Park, is one of the largest museums in the world dedicated to telling the history of the American Civil War. Downtown Harrisburg’s fine selection of hotels are just minutes away from this special museum. In Hershey, in addition to Hersheypark and Chocolate World, there are two unique tourism-related attractions – Hershey’s ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park, and Hershey Gardens near The Hotel Hershey. ZooAmerica is a small, 11-acre, zoo located immediately adjacent to Hersheypark. For visitors to Hersheypark, entrance to ZooAmerica is included in admission, or visitors may park at the zoo and just visit the intimate park, which features more than 75 species and about 200 animals from North America. The Hershey Gardens, high atop a hill overlooking the town of Hershey and Hersheypark, is a 23-acre botanical garden and arboretum (featuring roses in particular) built as a gift from chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey for his community and to honor his wife, Catherine. The Hotel Hershey, Mr. Hershey’s grand hotel on Pat’s Hill overlooking the town that bears his name, is now a fullservice destination resort. It was built in the early 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression. Today, after recent renovations

26

and upgrades, The Hotel Hershey is recognized as one of the finest destination resorts and conference centers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Sunday brunch at the Circular, the hotel’s premier restaurant, should be on every visitor’s To-Do list. This gorgeous region of Pennsylvania, lying just south of and within the Appalachian Mountains, is home to well over a half million residents who have the pleasure of shopping in outstanding national retail stores and in hundreds of unique village shops that cater to the particular and individual needs of their customers. Wherever you live and work in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Counties, you’ll find you are located close to outstanding grocery stores and supermarkets, the finest clothing retailers in large shopping malls, to boutiques in small town settings, and specially designed outlets. The Harrisburg Region is also famous for its garden centers, country markets, and roadside stands filled with produce, fruits and vegetables, grown right here in the heart of the Susquehanna Valley. You’ll find well organized and very popular farmers markets in their own buildings in Midtown Harrisburg, Lemoyne and Grantville. Saturday’s Market in Middletown features permanent vendors within its large building and an ever-changing flea market outside in the vast parking lot. At the Farmers Open Air Market at the PA Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, when the fields are full, the market is full, with truckloads of produce. The seven-month outdoor farmers market is set up just off North Cameron Street. If you travel into western Perry County, you’ll think you are in Lancaster’s Amish country. Look for Amish buggies on the roads and brightly colored clothing hanging from wash-lines throughout the scenic valleys of Perry County. Fall is an especially important time of the year for roadside shopping as the markets are filled with apples, pumpkins, squash, cider, and cut flowers, especially sunflowers. Dining choices in the Harrisburg Region are as eclectic as the foods that are offered. From independently-owned to chain restaurants, from Indian to French cuisine and everything in

between, there are options to satisfy every appetite. Center city Harrisburg and downtown Carlisle offer Restaurant Rows enabling residents and visitors a wide variety in one location. PARKS, SPORTS & RECREATION

Over the past forty years, the City of Harrisburg has developed

City Island, a large, 63-acre landmass that lies midstream in the Susquehanna River directly across from downtown Harrisburg, into a popular regional tourism and recreational destination. Today, City Island is a multi-purpose property. During the day, it serves as a major parking resource for downtown Harrisburg’s private sector and government workers, who easily walk to work across the Walnut Street Bridge from City Island’s multi-story parking facility. City Island is also home to Metro Bank Park Stadium, the home of the Harrisburg Senators baseball team, which plays in the Eastern League. The Senators are the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Adjacent to the baseball stadium is the Skyline Sports Complex, which is the home of the Harrisburg City Islanders soccer team. The City Islanders play in the USL Professional Division, the third tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. In addition to its two sports complexes, City Island is also home to Riverside Village, Harbourtown, a Carriage House, the Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat, miniature golf, three boat marinas, a public swimming beach, and the City Island Railroad. If you are looking for even more recreational opportunities, just a few miles east of downtown Harrisburg, in Hershey (The Sweetest Place on Earth!) you’ll find roller coasters and much more at Hersheypark. With over 70 rides and attractions, including 13 roller coasters, Hersheypark draws visitors from across the Mid-Atlantic throughout the summer and during the special holiday seasons of fall and winter. Located inside Hersheypark, The Boardwalk at Hersheypark has 15 water attractions, including a lazy river, wave pool, water slides, and more! Relax with family and friends in a luxurious cabana. Adjacent to Hersheypark, you’ll find Chocolate World, the Hershey Company’s visitor center. Chocolate World is the most visited corporate visitor center in North America. Also in Hershey, the Hershey Bears Hockey Club and the Harrisburg Stampede Indoor Football play in the Giant Center. The Bears, the top affiliate of the NHL Washington Capitals, play in the American Hockey League. The Harrisburg Stampede, representing the Central Pennsylvania region, is a member of the PIFL (Professional Indoor Football League). With as many as twenty-five golf courses in three counties,

28

the Harrisburg Region is truly a golfer’s paradise. The Harrisburg Region also hosts many of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s crown jewels: our state parks and forests. Within an hour of downtown Harrisburg are the Boyd Big Tree Reserve, Little Buffalo State Park, Colonel Denning State Park, Fowler’s Hollow State Park, Big Spring State Park, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Memorial Lake State Park, Swatara State Park, Gifford Pinchot State Park, and the Weiser State Forest. All offer camp grounds, hiking, swimming, boating and picnic facilities. One of the most delightful small parks in the region is located in the northern section of the City of Harrisburg, half a mile east of the Susquehanna River. Italian Lake, as it has been called since the park was designed by noted landscape architect Warren H. Manning, lies just north of Division Street and is easily accessed by driving north on Third Street from downtown Harrisburg. The inscription on the historical marker erected within the park states that this jewel of an urban park was part of an overall plan in 1901 called the City Beautiful Movement. Since Pennsylvania expanded its gaming laws, Hollywood Casino in Grantville has offered a full-service casino with table games of every description, as well as thousands of interesting slot machines. Thoroughbred racing at the adjacent Penn National Race Course takes place Wednesday through Saturday, twelve months of the year. The Harrisburg Region is also widely known for the auto and RV shows that are hosted throughout the year. The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum is located near Hersheypark. In addition to its terrific and ever-changing automobile museum, AACA hosts its Eastern Division AACA National Fall Meet, which takes place each year during the first full week in October on the grounds and parking lots surrounding Hersheypark and Giant Center. The Hershey meet is considered one of the largest antique automobile shows and flea markets in the United States. The annual Pennsylvania RV and Camping Show in Hershey is billed as America’s largest RV show. It takes place in early September at the Giant Center in Hershey. West of Harrisburg, in historic Carlisle, Carlisle Events hosts ten car collector/enthusiasts events each year at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. These events draw visitors from all over the world. dates back to the first decades of the 18th century, shortly after William Penn received his land grant in 1681. By the first decade of the 18th century, traders, explorers and early migrants had made their way west through the first hundred or so miles of Penn’s Woods and encountered the mile-wide Susquehanna River. The river effectively blocked their western migration until John Harris, Sr., (who received a trader’s license from William Penn “to erect such buildings as are necessary for his trade, and to enclose and improve such quantities of land he shall see fit”) developed a ferry business in what was to become downtown Harrisburg to take these early migrants across the river into what would be known as Cumberland County. John Harris, Sr. built a house and trading post on the bank of the river in the area where the gloriously arched Norfolk Southern railroad bridge now crosses the Susquehanna River. Harris continued to operate his businesses successfully until his death in 1748. He is buried in a small, cast-iron-fenced plot on Front Street near the river. Upon his father’s death, John Harris, Jr. inherited his father’s businesses. In 1766, after the end of the French and Indian War, John Harris, Jr. built a substantial house for his family, which is located on a rise that places it above the high water mark for even the worst of the Susquehanna’s periodic floods, across Front Street from his father’s grave. Since John Harris, Jr. built the mansion, (now referred to as the John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion) it has had eight owners, and has been the home of the Dauphin County Historical Society since 1941. Today, history, arts and culture are thriving throughout the Harrisburg Region. In every village, town, hamlet and city in the three-county area, you’ll find museums, historic sites and historical societies, arts, creative design, visual arts of every kind, and a host of talented men and women who sometimes make their livings as artists, but more often present their talents as amateurs and volunteers. The Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM) is located in the historic Keystone Trust building at Third and Calder Streets in Midtown Harrisburg. The SAM museum is Central Pennsylvania’s only museum dedicated to the visual arts. The Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in downtown Harrisburg is the first of its kind in the nation to house performing arts, science and education in one location. Community and professional theater groups perform at the Whitaker Center as do nationally and internationally known entertainers. Harrisburg’s Forum Auditorium – a 1,763 seat historic landmark auditorium owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania – is one of the most beautiful spaces for public address and concerts in the world. This historic treasure and important civic resource, built during the height of the Great Depression in the style of an open-air Greek amphitheater, has undergone a significant upgrade and renovation. It is the home of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Stuart Malina. You’ll find two exceptional cultural organizations in downtown Hershey. The magnificent, 1,904-seat Hershey Theater, which opened in 1933 as part of Milton Hershey’s Great Building Campaign of the Depression, is a perfectly-preserved performing arts palace. The Hershey Theater is the Harrisburg region’s premier performing arts center, presenting the finest in touring Broadway shows, classical music and dance attractions, and world-renowned entertainers. Just a block west of the theater, also on Chocolate Avenue, is the Hershey Story, a modern, new museum devoted to the history and legacy of Milton S. Hershey and the chocolate candy confections he invented. The interactive museum chronicles Milton Hershey’s life, businesses, community and philanthropies. Also in Hershey, Hershey Entertainment and Resorts operates the two largest performing arts venues in the region – Hersheypark Stadium and the Giant Center. Hersheypark Stadium can accommodate as many as 18,000 for sporting events and as many as 30,000 for concerts with famous performers like Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, and Willie Nelson. Adjacent to the stadium, in a more intimate venue, Hersheypark’s Star Pavilion can accommodate up to 8,000 in both reserved seating in front of the stage and the general admission lawn area. Using the same parking facilities as the stadium, Giant Center, a 10,500-seat multi-purpose arena (home to the Hershey Bears hockey team) has hosted Elton John, Manheim Steamroller, Cirque de Soleil, Paul Simon and Sting.

CHAMBER & CREDC

Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC The Harrisburg Regional Chamber was initially known as the Harrisburg Board of Trade and was founded in the late 1800s. In 1913, it was decided that the organization should be formally incorporated as a Chamber of Commerce and by 1914 that official designation was given to the organization. The interesting fact, however, is that although the name has changed, the concept and objectives have remained constant throughout this entire history. Recognized as one of the largest, most dynamic organizations of its kind, the Harrisburg Regional Chamber has combined a unique blend of business, community, and economic development services under one roof to improve the region’s economic vitality and quality of life.
