SUPERVISORY SKILLS QUESTIONNAIRE Third Edition Eileen M. Russo, PhD
Overview Supervisors have always played a pivotal role in the success of organizations. But what made an effective supervisor ten or 20 years ago doesn’t necessarily apply today. While the basic function is the same, the job itself has become far more complex as a result of new organizational structures and technology. Add to this the differing expectations of the modern workforce, and it’s no wonder the supervisor’s role is among the most challenging in an organization. The Supervisory Skills Questionnaire (SSQ) is designed to help supervisors balance the demands of management and the needs of their workgroup by assessing and offering guidance in five core areas: • Guiding the Work

How it Works
Product Components
The SSQ presents individuals with a series of 30 real-world situations. Their task is to choose one of three possible response actions. Scores reveal an overall supervisory score as well as strengths and areas for improvement in each of the five key skill areas. The assessment is available in both print and online versions. The print version has an optional observer form, allowing supervisors to elicit feedback from their direct reports for a more rounded interpretation of their current abilities. Whichever version is used, SSQ provides supervisors with an in-depth understanding of their performance and a benchmark they can use to create an action plan for improvement.
