Stress and sleep are in cahoots. Research shows that half of us are going to bed too stressed-out to get a good night of quality sleep. The issue is also much more prevalent in women than men. The more anxious we get about not being able to sleep, the more stressed out we get and the harder it is to drift off. Going out for a walk Walking outdoors fills your lungs with fresh, oxygenated air, gets the heart pumping and toxins shifted. All this and the tiredness that comes with a daily bout of physical exercise helps you sleep better at night. Walking is also a precious opportunity to get some tech-free peace and quiet and a much needed chance to gather your thoughts. Wandering and pondering – how perfect does that sound?


Balloon breathing One of the most effective ways to achieve a sense of calm is to manage your breath. Try this simple exercise after you switch off the light tonight to help slow down your mind in preparation for sleep...

Sit comfortably with your spine straight and head titled forward slightly. Close your eyes Take a long, slow, deep breath, breathing in through you nose. As you do that put your hand on your chest and imagine your lungs as a brightly coloured balloon Breathe out through your mouth and imagine the balloon deflating then imagine it growing big again with your next breath Continue to focus on the balloon until you feel yourself begin to relax You’ll soon find your mind has quietened and you are ready to drift off in to a lovely sleep



Sit on a bench

Find a quiet place outdoors where you can be still for a while As you sit, tune in to your surroundings, What can you see? What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you feel? Notice the tiny things that we usually miss – the shape of a leaf, the feel of the grain on the bench and focus all your attention on it, notice the details Take a nice long breath in and out. Notice how being in the moment surrounded by nature can bring a feeling of peace
