SMART CITY BERLIN MASTER URBAN DESIGN / T e g e l Incubator

Prof. Raoul Bunschoten Chair for Sustainable Urban Planning and Urban Design Department of Architecture Technische Universit채t Berlin

about This work explores the former Tegel Airport in Berlin as a Incubator- isolated testbed - for the research of our future urban environment, creating various systems that aim at high-level efficiency in the use of energy and resources. We researched local protourban conditions and designed the Tegel Smart City Incubator using the Urban Gallery as methodology and an online and open source design tool. The studio cooperated directly with Tegel Projekt GmbH. Urban Gallery is a new approach to urban planning that can address the complexity and dynamic character of, for example, climate change mitigation. This involves the investigation of smart materials, the use of an architectural toolbox for the development of an urban plan, and the design of specific examples of urban systems - Scenario Games.

PT [WiTu] Wind Turbine produces energy starting from the kinetic energy. It has been thought to work in a settle, in order to produce a considerable ammount of energy. Each stripe (50mx0.5m) produces 2 kWh and could be apply to buildings or create wind wall throughout the area. This Turbine is an alternative to conventional turbines and, in the same time, is linked with buildings and social spaces, still producing a considerable amount of energy, in order to be able to respond to energy need of the area.

PT [ARS1] A rain water collecting system that could be composed in many different ways depending on situation and it’s position. One unit can collect ~1 m3 rain water. To support the hard weight of water the special structure system composed with steel pipes are strongly needed. And the columns which are supporting the roof have a possibility to set up some special objects for community like electronic equipments on it.

Smart flexible structure capable of using multiple parallel resources, transform them into energy so that it can be mobilized and transported to different users. The entire system is delivered to its users through "smart grids" which connect the different buildings and areal distributing the energy produced by the prototype. Through smart phones, users can transfer and also share the energy they need for every day.

With water, the fish produced fertilizer reaches plants which are connected with the fish basin. The rest water from the plants with its organic waste, is going back to the fish. Fish are eating the organic waste from the plants. Only a bit of water is disappearing in the cycle that has to be replaced.

Urban farming can be defined shortly as the growing of plants and the raising of animals within and around cities. The most striking feature of urban agriculture, which distinguishes it from rural agriculture, is that it is integrated into the urban economic and ecological system: urban agriculture is embedded in -and interacting with- the urban ecosystem. Urban agriculture may take place in locations inside the cities (intra-urban) or in the peri-urban areas.

OF [Ag00] Energy from Biomass. Leaves everywhere on the streets. Everyday leaves are collected. Biomass is the oldest source of renewable energy. Sustainable, low-carbon biomass can provide a significant fraction of the new renewable energy we need to reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide to levels that scientists say will avoid the worst impacts of global warming. Without sustainable, low-carbon biopower, it will likely be more expensive and take longer to transform to a clean energy economy.¨

A system of canals is established which reaches from urban areas into the Tegel water landscape with different amounts of splitting up, increasing approaching the water landscape centers.Rain water, which is not needed for special uses related to housing and agriculture will flow to the water reed plant. They filter rainwater but also peoples grey water which itself is not used for agriculture. The water reed plants provide semi-clean water again for the people's need for water, the direct flow to natural lakes and also biomass wich can be processed to energy by the waste water and energy treatment plant. The people's need for 100% clean water will be satisfied by the waste water and energy treteatment plant which also is in charge of all distrubution of water and energy.

This prototype benefits from the airport as a land for cultivating plants, which would later be used for producing biogas as well as community gardens. The soil around the airport runway is contaminated due to the various chemicals used for defrosting and frequent fuel leaks. The area is going to be cleaned by phytoremediation.

PT [C2C1] Cradle to Cradle seeks to create systems that are not only efficient but also essentially waste free. It models human industry on nature's processes viewing materials as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. It suggests that industry must protect and enrich ecosystems and nature's biological metabolism while also maintaining a safe, productive technical metabolism for the high-quality use and circulation of organic and technical nutrients.

There are many examples of how going green saves you money. Making your own compost, for instance by building a compost pile, can be a great way to save money. Not only does this reduce the need to buy expensive fertilizers, it also gives a great boost to the growth of your own vegetables and fruit. Many people build a compost tumbler or compost bin to produce compost from kitchen and garden waste.

Trees with their metabolism contribute considerably to a healthy microclimate in our cities and they enrich our daily life with their appearance. The aim of baubotanical research is to design and to build living plant constructions as architectural bearing structures in the dimension of fully grown trees. Thereby it is possible to create in short time green spaces that combine the aesthetic and ecologic qualities of trees with architectural usage and functionality.

Biodegradable packaging is plant-based. By design, using Ingeo results in 75% less greenhouse gases than the oil-based PET plastic it replaces, even if both end up in a landfill. The process to create Ingeo makes use of the carbon stored in plants by photosynthesis in the form of dextrose sugar. The carbon and other elements in these sugars are then used to make a biopolymer through a process of fermentation and separation. The resulting resin, called Ingeo biopolymer (polylactid (PLA)), can then be injection molded into plastics goods, extruded for film applications, thermoformed into packaging, or extruded for use in textiles applications. The biopolymer is also used in packaging manufacturing. Applications can be clear, opaque, flexible, or rigid.

Rammed earth, is a technique for building walls using the raw materials of earth, chalk, lime and gravel. It is simple to construct, noncombustible, thermally massive, strong, and durable. Because rammed-earth structures use locally available materials, they usually have low embodied energy and generate very little waste. The soils used are typically subsoils low in clay (between 5% and 15%), the topsoil being retained for agricultural use. Rammed earth can contribute to the overall energyefficiency of buildings. The density, thickness and thermal conductivity of rammed earth make it a particularly suitable material for passive solar heating. Warmth takes almost 12 hours to work its way through a wall 35 cm (14 in) thick.

It looks like wood, feels like wood, is even made of wood – but it shifts shape and solidifies like plastic, bringing together the most powerful material assets of two of the most used materials on the planet. Lingin (an often-discarded element of regular wood) is combined with natural resins, flax and fibers that can be injected into molds and form extremely complex, precision-shaped objects normally made of conventional, non-biodegradable petroleum-based plastics. Just like wood, it breaks down quickly and organically into eco-safe by-products like water and carbon dioxide. It is also made from a leftover part of trees that is unused during the paper-making process – over 100 million pounds of its main ingredient are created as a simple side-effect of the existing pulp industry. What can be made of Arboform? Almost anything you can imagine.

Farmers' markets and buying direct from farms are also another way to go green and often save money. Use fabric or reusable grocery bags to save using plastic bags which can be harmful to the environment.

The prototype is shaped as an artificial tree. Each unit consist of 450 flexible thread 30 meters high made of carbon fiber reinforced resin pole that will sway in the wind. As the wind moves the flexible thread it will create a synchronously bend in the downstream of the air wake, it causes bending stresses on the corresponding piezoelectric polymer that effectively absorb and convert the kinetic energy of the moving air to electrical power which are wired together into electrical regulation circuits that generate power with a high wind to power conversion efficiency.

This scenario is related to scenario 23. The question would be: what happens with the whole system if the construction of industries continues? Could the place still be imaginable for people to live in? What would it mean for the energy production? Is it necessary for the living space to interact with the industries? The space under the solar skin was turned into industry. A part from the living area had to be removed. New structure divides living from industry zones. The green space and gardening area were moved to a flying platform capable of adopting it.

Then turned into molecules u can create plastic out of those. The particular bacteria used is collected from a geyser in Calistoga, California and is mixed with calcium carbonate. By adding calcium carbonate this team of researchers was able to turn the temperature on the process up, therefore making the fermenting process as efficient as those that create plastics from corn starch or sugar cane. Some critics of bioplastics have said that we shouldn’t cut into our food supply in order to make plastics. An example for a possible urban prototype. Each cell has maximum of 35m2 area which can be designed by its user-the choreographer. From this basic space one can expand into the public area by connecting it to another user. The more angles the basic cell has the more connections it allows. In the middle there is an internal circulation which allows direct access into the Private cell. The Skin of the Cell is also used as an information board. The bridge space is a ‘Proto space’-it is where people begin to interact with each other and urban dynamics emerge. [Exki] experimental kitchen
