HRM Awards 2015 was a resounding success, with more than 800 professionals from Singapore’s HR community coming together to commemorate the profession’s most spectacular achievements by Shalini Shukla-Pandey
T
his year’s HRM Awards was truly a spectacle for all to see. Over 800 HR and business leaders turned up at the pre-eminent HR event at The Ritz Carlton on March 6 to celebrate and reward the best in HR over the past year. Living up to its reputation as “the Oscars” of the local HR industry – as lauded by The Straits Times and even some winners on the night – the event was the biggest and most spectacular one yet. The 12th Annual HRM Awards was not just glitz and glamour. A record 231 finalists from 87 companies vied for the top spots in 24 categories. That competition was extremely fierce with finalists like DBS Bank, McDonald’s Restaurants and the JUMBO Group of Restaurants all vying for top honours.

BS Bank was the biggest winner for the evening, clinching the most coveted Hays Award for Employer of Choice. Sylvia Lai, Executive Director of HR and Communications, DBS Bank, was elated to receive the pinnacle award, the bank’s third win for the evening. “This is really a feather in the cap of the journey that we have gone through the last three years. Winning Employer of Choice is a testament of what we’ve been doing in recruitment, talent development, social media and rewards. It’s all about teamwork and I’m really proud that we’ve made it,” she said. Cheong Meng Foong, Managing Director and Group Head for HR, DBS Bank attributed the win to her organisation’s efforts in looking at HR holistically. She said that the bank paid particular attention to the needs of employees and also looked at programmes that would attract candidates and boost its brand image. Cheong described the award as “a dream come true”. “We can now go out there with the DBS flag raised high and tell

Having a strong employer brand is very important and that is why we chose this award (to sponsor). “The HRM Awards is a key date in the HR diary of Singapore. We’ve been partners for five years and we are looking forward to continuing our partnership in the years to come.”

Robert Walters Award for Best HR Leader
R
esplendent in red, Aileen Tan, Group Director - HR, Singtel Group won the highly-anticipated Robert Walters Award for Best HR Leader.
The hotly-contested category featured a slew of HR heavyweights including Alexander Kershaw from American Express, Syed Ali Abbas from Pacnet Singapore and Vineet Gambhir from Yahoo! Asia Pacific.
You can be a great leader but if you have no followers, it doesn’t make a difference. I couldn’t do this without the support of my management, my boss and my colleagues
However, it was Tan’s innovative spirit that won over the judges. Tan is a strong advocate of innovation and is constantly seeking ways for her team to improve its work processes. She was also lauded for her role in leading organisational transformation at Singtel.
“The feeling is truly amazing. It is recognition of all the hard work, efforts and late nights. More importantly, it reflects the passion we have in this profession,” said a thoroughly elated Tan. “You can be a great leader but if you have no followers, it doesn’t make a difference. I couldn’t do this without the support of my management, my boss and my colleagues,” said Tan, who believes winning the award is only the beginning of a much longer journey. ‘Winning is not an individual activity or affair. Very importantly, it is about being able to share what we have learnt and making sure that the HR community benefits from some of the learnings that we have gone through ourselves.” Awards sponsor Dominic Salomoni, Associate Director of Robert Walters’ Accounting & Finance division, described the awards as a “spectacular night”.

STJobs Award for Best Employer Branding
M
cDonald’s is indeed “loving it”! Winner of the STJobs Award for Best Employer Branding, McDonald’s has continually come up with innovative ways to brand itself, whilst taking pains to involve existing employees, one judge noted. In 2014, McDonald’s employer branding campaign added another dimension to efforts. The message of “I’m More” and the campaign of “Gonna Be Great” cast a spotlight on all the great reasons to join the McFamily and the promise of a transformative experience.
We hope we can keep our brand flying high so that we can continue to attract and retain talent
McDonald’s branding initiatives are uniquely crafted to address target audiences, with eye-catching collaterals and campaigns that promote the brand as one that attracts, develops and engages a great team of great people, another judge said. The testimony of employees lends personal experience, which is a powerful branding tool to inspire both current and external candidates. “We worked very hard to have a branding strategy and we’re very happy that our efforts paid off,” said Audrey Chin, HR Director, McDonald’s Restaurants. “We hope we can keep our brand flying high so that we can continue to attract and retain talent. “We are indeed very honoured to be recognised by HRM Awards as having the best employer brand in Singapore,” she added. Steven Wong, Head - Marketing, Digital Division, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), gave his thumbs up to HRM Awards for coming up with the Special Recognition award for each category, allowing more companies to be lauded for their great HR practices. “STJobs has also built its own branding over the past two years so we decided to support this particular award,” he said. Having high praise for the awards, Wong spared no time in saying that STJobs would be back next year and continue to do so for years to come.

Hay Group Award for Best Diversity & Inclusion Strategies
H
aving snagged the Hay Group Award for Best Diversity & Inclusion Strategies, Marianne Lim, Head of HR, Singapore, Barclays Bank, is already looking ahead to how the bank can further expand its scope.
“I think it just spurs us on to do more. There is a lot more to do, and for us, diversity and inclusion is not just gender, it’s not just culture; it’s people with disabilities, multi-generational workforces and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (staff) as well,” she explained.
The core of everything that we do is diversity and inclusion, and it’s wonderful to be honoured for that
“There is a lot more to do.” Having been employed by Barclays Bank for nine years now, Lim said “the core of everything that we do is diversity and inclusion, and it’s wonderful to be honoured for that”. “I think it is in everything that we do every day with the people that we hire and the people that work with us, and it’s something that HR really focuses on as well as senior management. That partnership is what has led us here today,” she elaborated. “It’s a really nice feeling and we are the people behind the scenes. We usually don’t get recognised and usually have to do the really difficult stuff, so for us, I think it is a really refreshing and really nice thing to happen.” Lauren Gardner, Manager - Regional MNC Business (Fast Growing Markets) Hay Group, which sponsored the Diversity & Inclusion Strategies Award, says the company was keen to be involved because it does a lot of work around organisations who are trying to improve performance. “There are a number of ways that they do that and diversity and inclusion and changing the way people think about things, changing the way they view organisations and the cultures that are involved, is one of the ways that we support businesses,” she said.

Best Use of Social Media
S
ocial media is rapidly emerging as a powerful business and HR tool. It helps businesses to eliminate boundaries, spur innovation and also communicate more effectively with the workforce.
Technology giant Dell is a frontrunner in this space, and deservedly clinched the evening’s award for Best Use of Social Media. It edged out stiff competition from companies including Singtel, Deutsche Bank and Certis CISCO. The judges were impressed at how Dell – an early adopter of social media – has continued to systematically expand its use to improve recruitment, employee branding, engagement, and employee communications.
Social media is something that is extremely important to Dell. It actually starts up right at the CEO level and it is something that he is extremely passionate about
“Social media is something that is extremely important to Dell. It actually starts up right at the CEO level and it is something that he is extremely passionate about,” shared Tiffany See, Executive Director - Asia-Pacific, Dell. See also said that the technology industry had changed significantly. “It’s all about digitalisation, social media and connection. And we’ve moved with the changes. Being a technology company, we have that to our advantage.”

or an organisation that was determined to bag the Best CSR Practices gong, you can expect Starwood Asia-Pacific Hotels & Resorts to espouse exemplary traits in Corporate Social Responsibility matters.
The organisation overcame stiff competition from the likes of Resorts World Sentosa, Yahoo! Asia Pacific and SMRT Corporation to win the award, much to the absolute delight of Dylan Choong, Director of HR for Starwood Asia-Pacific Hotels & Resorts. “We definitely feel very proud and I think the CSR Award looks at recognising organisations like us for having done a good job in being a corporate citizen and I think this win validates that,” said Choong.
I think this win is the global effort of Starwood as a company and specifically in AsiaPacific, where we have 75,000 associates and are led by leaders who are committed towards trying to leave a better place for everybody else to experience
“I think this win is the global effort of Starwood as a company and specifically in Asia-Pacific, where we have 75,000 associates and are led by leaders who are committed towards trying to leave a better place for everybody else to experience.” Choong remarked that the victory now affirms the company’s commitment to strive toward even greater heights. “We’ve won awards before and I think this is a new category that we’ve won this year. I think this also shows that there are many other facets of HR that we can go on and become better in,” he explained. “So let’s hope this means many more to come!”

PayrollServe Award for Best Use of Technology
H
arnessing the power of something that’s constantly evolving is not an easy feat. Yet, American Express has mastered this art and for that, won the PayrollServe Award for Best Use of Technology. “Their use of technology is clear and focused, and their results are impressive,” one judge noted. “Their recruitment strategies and talent acquisition initiatives are very purposeful and focused on delivering personalised outreach to talent with greater use of digital innovation.”
For us, it’s not about using technology for technology’s sake, but rather to use it to improve our employees’ working experience
Another judge lauded the bank’s commitment to having cuttingedge technology infrastructure to deliver quality digital projects and best-in-class HR e-systems and tools. The bank still manages to have a one-stop HR portal, including a comprehensive training framework for self-directed and team-learning. “American Express continually finds ways to drive employee interest, engagement and active participation in technology,” the judge added. “We’re absolutely thrilled and very surprised at the same time,” said Alex Kershaw, HR Director – Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia, American Express. “Over the last twelve months we’ve done a lot to upgrade our technology and simplify our processes through the use of technology. “For us it’s not about using technology for technology’s sake, but rather to use it to improve our employees’ working experience,” she explained. Kershaw added that while the award recognises the bank’s efforts over the last twelve months, it doesn’t stop there.

Best Mature & Re-Employment Practices
M
ature workers offer a wealth of experience that can benefit a workforce. The Public Service Division of the Prime Minister’s Office, winner of the Best Mature and Re-Employment Practices Award understands this well.
Over the years, the organisation has proactively implemented numerous policies, practices and measures to support the growth and development of mature workers. All its officers are entitled to 100 hours of training per year and the organisation implemented the re-employment policy six months ahead of national legislation. In 2013, 94% of officers who would have otherwise retired at the age of 62 were offered re-employment.
They (mature workers) have paved the way for younger generations of officers and are very good mentors for us
Employees at the Public Service Division, Prime Minister’s Office also benefit from flexible working policies and practices. Mature workers are a very valuable resource for the Public Service, said Lim Teck Kia, Director - HR Policy, Public Service Division, Prime Minister’s Office. “They have paved the way for younger generations of officers and are very good mentors for us. They continue to be an asset to further the work and productivity of the Public Service.” Commenting on the win, Lim said: “What we did was to really be true to support the needs of our mature and re-employed workers in the Public Service. It is about understanding their needs and working together with them to come up with good practices and policies on the ground.” “It is a continual process. We will continue to engage these stakeholders. We will continue to see how best we can meet their needs,” Lim said. “We hope to work together to show that they are a valuable resource.”

Best Reward & Recognition Strategies
When we look at them and when we segmentise the various categories of people, we question what really makes them tick

BS Bank has done it again. The organisation outfought and outsmarted worthy challengers such as McDonald’s Restaurants, Singtel Group, StarHub and Unilever Asia to retain the Best Reward & Recognition Strategies crown it won in the 2014 edition of the HRM Awards. “This is the second year that we have won this. We won the same award last year and we are winning it again this year,” said Cheong Meng Foong, Managing Director and Group Head of Rewards for HR at DBS Bank. “We are really very proud to be the winner and feel honoured to be selected again.” According to Cheong, the key to the bank’s stunning win has been about aligning every one of its customers with employees as the forefront of strategy when it crafts reward and recognition frameworks. “When we look at them and when we segmentise the various categories of people, we question what really makes them tick,” she explained. “So when we think about that, we really think about our customers and our employees.”
While admitting that the bank would to love to complete a hattrick of the same award next year, Cheong said realistically, it raises the bar again. “We said that last year, and we are saying it again this year – we really will of course, strive even harder to ensure that we not only make DBS Bank proud in Singapore, but also in the region,” she added. “I think it increases DBS Bank’s brand image and that is really important. Champion of HR
T
he public sector in Singapore this year is abuzz with activity, what with SG50 and all. Now, it has yet another cause for celebration. Yong Ying-I, Permanent Secretary – Public Service Division, Prime Minister’s Office, has been crowned the Champion of HR at the HRM Awards this year. “I’m very honoured and stunned,” she exclaimed. “I’d like to thank the judges and HRM Asia for this award.”The Singapore public sector has been working very hard to continue to improve itself and be a great employer and organisation for its people, said Yong. “The work we’ve done is not so much about trying to win an award (although that’s a big plus) but more about trying to do the right thing.”
I hope the public and private sector can work together to learn from each other’s best practices for the betterment of the entire HR community in Singapore
“People are at the heart of the public service and it’s critically important that the HR community is able to build a public service that is strong and progressive and motivated to serve the people of Singapore,” she added. “I think it was critical for me to support the development of HR across the public service of Singapore.” Yong indeed has vision and believes that this vision can be turned into reality through proper development of human capital, one judge said. She has worked hard with all the stakeholders to ensure that the right processes are put in place. In her own words: “As the leader of the Service’s central HR agency, I recognised that the role of HR is more important than before. It needs to partner and work alongside the senior leadership to address capability needs by equipping officers with the necessary competencies and skill-sets for now and the future.” Another judge noted how she worked to professionalise HR, uplift its capabilities and build “one” HR community. “She championed the development of a progressive, responsive and flexible HR framework for the public service sector,” another judge said. “She also displays decisive leadership qualities, recognises the value of team dynamics and maximises all available resources.” Moving forward, for the first time, the Public Service Division has rolled out a leadership development programme for young HR professionals. “More such efforts will help more leaders emerge from the public sector,” said Yong. “I hope the public and private sector can work together to learn from each other’s best practices for the betterment of the entire HR community in Singapore.”

here’s been lots of talk about developing skills and developing potential in Singapore. Unilever Asia has stuck out of the crowd in the graduate development space, winning the HRM Award for Best Graduate Development this year. Towers Watson Award for Best Work-Life Balance
I
t personified its credentials when it reclaimed the Best Reward & Recognition Strategies gong.
And DBS Bank went one step further when it scooped up the Towers Watson Award for Best Work-Life Balance at this year’s HRM Awards. Needless to say, Cheong Meng Foong, Managing Director and Group Head of Rewards for HR at DBS Bank, said her team “feel on top of the world”.
Today’s population where we have multigenerational workers and where every one of them demands some form of flexibility at different parts of their life cycle demands that we believe in work-life balance
“I think winning the best worklife balance award is really not that easy because the competition was strong, but it endorses the notion that we have done the right thing for our staff and for our organisation and that is why we are here,” she said. Tellingly, Cheong said work-life balance was not just for people with children and for people with old folks that they have to look after; rather, it’s meant for the whole population. “Today’s population where we have multi-generational workers and where every one of them demands some form of flexibility at different parts of their life cycle demands that we believe in work-life balance,” she elaborated. “We actually looked into that and therefore, we felt that it was the right strategy for the business to adopt. We need to work harder, think more of ‘what next’ for our people. The focus is really on our people, doing what’s right for them and doing what’s right for the bank.” Debbie Ng, Director - Benefits, Towers Watson Singapore, who presented the award, said that work-life balance had actually been cited as one of the top three drivers of sustainable engagement. “We are really passionate about work-life balance, even for our own employees , and hence, this is an award that we definitely fully support,” she affirmed. Ng also cited that the HRM Awards was really what HR watchers had labelled it to be.

ealthy and happy employees create a more effective and productive workplace. Resorts World Sentosa has experienced clear wins in this space, the latest being the Ikeda Spa Prestige Award for Best Health & Wellbeing.
Resorts World Sentosa has 13,000 staff with 53% of that population aged 30 years or below. “You can’t have one-sizefits-all policy. We need to really look at different age groups and profiles and come up with a benefits programme that benefits the majority of them. This is not an easy feat. We have to be receptive to their concerns and ideas,” said Valerie Loy, VP HR, Resorts World Sentosa.
You can’t have one-sizefits-all policy. We need to really look at different age groups and profiles and come up with a benefits programme that benefits the majority of them
Engaging employees in constant feedback sessions was a major contribution to the win, Loy revealed. “We like to hear from them on what is valuable to them, instead of having white elephant benefits. Whatever policies, benefits and initiatives we develop, we have our team members in mind. They are always at the centre of our brainstorming and how we develop our policies.” Looking ahead, Loy said that winning the award has set the bar even higher and there is still a lot more to be done. “I hope to come back next year and win the same award. We will continue do what we are doing and look at even better offerings,” Loy said. First-time award sponsor Ikeda Spa was delighted to be a part of the HRM Awards this year. “I was completely wowed. I did not expect such a grand event. I mingled around and chatted with companies about their recent HR developments,” said Eric Tan, Director, Ikeda Spa. “We are a Japanese spa and corporate wellness is close to our heart. We would like to take this chance to give recognition to companies who have challenged themselves to think differently about wellness and what it means to their employees,” said Tan.

Best Recruitment Strategies
T
here is no doubting that recruitment is one of the most important components of HR’s make-up and judging from McDonald’s Restaurants’ second straight victory in the Best Recruitment Strategies category, the fast food giant is in a world of its own when it comes to the notoriously difficult area of hiring the right people. “It’s such an honour for McDonald’s to win this award and we are really thrilled,” said Lynn Hong, Senior Manager - HR, McDonald’s Restaurants. “This is the second time that we are winning, and it’s really a testament to all the hard work the team has put in.”
Winning this award is more about employee branding. It gives us the testimony that we’ve done the right thing and it means that we are in a better position to bring in the best talents
Indeed, the fast food conglomerate fought off intense competition from illustrious counterparts such as American Express, DBS Bank, Unilever Asia and the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore to reclaim its prized award.
Hong revealed that McDonald’s robustly believes that human capital is its best asset, and that the organisation designs strategies that are out of the norm to try to get people to join what she termed as “one of the world’s best companies”. “We will bring this award back home. We will celebrate first, and we will continue to work harder to bring in more talents into the company,” she added. “Winning this award is more about employee branding. It gives us the testimony that we’ve done the right thing and it means that we are in a better position to bring in the best talents.”

But it certainly was a first to hear Elaine Xu, Talent Development Manager, Keppel Offshore & Marine labelling Keppel staff as “Keppelites” after she collected the Kaplan Professional Award for Best Training, Learning & Development on behalf of her organisation. “Thank you very much to HRM Asia and to the esteemed panel of judges for giving us this recognition,” said Xu. “I’m very proud and honoured that we have been able to win this award and it’s all because of the hard work of ‘Keppelites’ from Keppel Offshore & Marine.”
