HRM ASIA READERS CHOICE AWARDS 2015

Celebrating

the best corporate services

The HRM Asia Readers Choice Awards 2015 was truly a success, with a large number of organisations coming together to celebrate the top corporate service providers to HR

T

his year’s HRM Asia Readers Choice Awards was a clear reflection of just who are the most preferred and best corporate service providers in Singapore. Leading up to the award ceremony, HR professionals and HRM’s esteemed readers were called on to choose and vote for the best vendor organisations as part of a month-long campaign. HRM Asia’s inaugural award presentation was held at Caribbean restaurant and bar Lime House on September 9. Representatives from the various vendor organisations gathered to celebrate and honour the winners. The evening boasted a formal, yet hip, atmosphere with guests clad professionally in blazers, suits and dresses. Food and drinks were served as part of an intimate networking session before the formalities got underway. More than 70 finalist organisations strove for the top spots in the 14 award categories, which ranged from the Best HR Technology to the Best Business Hotel. And the competition was certainly fierce. However, in the end, the big winners boiled down to the following winners: iHRMS, Info-Tech Systems and Integrators, Resource Solutions, Raffles Medical Group, Marketing Institute of Singapore, Kaplan Leadership Institute, ROHEI Corporation, Santa Fe Relocation Services, Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, Orange Clove Catering, Asia Medic, Frasers Hospitality, Lanson Place Winsland Serviced Residences, and Capri by Fraser, Changi City, Singapore.

Best HR Tech – Outsourcing – RESOURCE SOLUTIONS

F

or Simon Bradberry, Managing Director of Resource Solutions in Asia-Pacific, his organisation’s victory in the Best HR Tech – Outsourcing category vindicates its robust utilisation of technology in its talent recruitment efforts. “We offer recruitment and talent acquisition services, and we offer technology as part of that on an outsource basis. We believe quite strongly that the deployment of technology and outsourcing works much better if you have a service provider that is providing broader services as part of their own solution,” says Bradberry. “We are able to do that and we offer cost savings to HR in terms of talent acquisition. We offer technology as part of that service and we think that is a significant benefit for HR.” Bradberry feels that talent acquisition is the most important area of HR, because that is where the profession is really adding value to the rest of the business. “Hence, you can improve the quality of the people you’re bringing in, and you can save money at the same time, and you can improve your processes. So, we think that’s a niche model to be offered to people and it’s an area that isn’t widely adopted at the moment,” he explains. Bradberry adds the recruitment processes that people want to apply and go through are changing dramatically. “For example, people want to use mobile devices, tablets and smartphones to apply for jobs. Our technology allows people to use things like direct links to social media; they don’t need a CV and they can apply directly – which is a great experience and gives a really good impression of the company,” he says. “They feel very good about the process being modern and they can apply for a job faster than they can book a taxi!” Simon Bradberry, Managing Director Asia-Pacific, Resource Solutions (Pictured in middle)

Best Corporate Healthcare Group – RAFFLES MEDICAL GROUP

R

affles Medical Group (RMG) was crowned the winner for the Best Corporate Healthcare Group award. Having won the award, Yong Yih Ming, Deputy General Manager, Raffles Medical Group, says HR can look forward to a total direct engagement experience for their healthcare and employee benefits needs with RMG. “Such a partnership will allow HR to better manage their healthcare expenditure, overall productivity, and corporate wellness programmes,” he says. Yong also says RMG has a distinctive approach in its medical practices. “RMG adopts a Group Practice Model for its medical practice that integrates directly with its group insurance, third party claims processes, and other corporate medical services,” he explains. “This itself is a unique value-add for HR, as RMG is able to directly manage the spectrum of requirements within its own operational ecosystem.” Other aspects of RMG’s offer have also proven to be a beneficial tool for staff. “Employees can look forward to our premier Raffles healthcare and service experiences that are not only consistent across all our clinics, but also convenient and accessible across Singapore,” Yong says. “They can also look towards a lifelong medical partnership not just for themselves, but also for their family members.”

Best Corporate Learning and Development Provider – MARKETING INSTITUTE OF SINGAPORE

L

earning and Development is becoming increasingly crucial to the development of HR as a profession, something which Christina Ho, Head, Executive Development Services, Marketing Institute of Singapore (MIS), can attest to. “The role of HR has evolved more quickly than ever in the last five years. Due to the dynamic shifts in demographics of our workforce, there is a widening of functional responsibilities undertaken by HR professionals today. Like an extended arm of the HR team, MIS provides the platform and expertise in supporting and taking care of their learning and development needs,” she says, upon her organisation snagging the Best Corporate Learning and Development Provider award. According to Ho, MIS’ wide range of courses and highlyexperienced consultants across various disciplines gives it the capability to help HR professionals analyse their company’s training gaps, and design suitable courses to help them elevate their human capital potential. “Knowing that their learning and development needs are well taken care of by us, HR professionals can dedicate more time and resources to focus on other core areas,” she explains. Citing that MIS’ courses are supported and endorsed by various industry partners, including the Workforce Development Agency and technology giant Google, Ho says MIS is able to bring the latest business trends and insights to its customers. “By staying abreast of changing shifts and trends in the economy, employees are better equipped with the necessary skillsets to address oncoming challenges, thus giving them a winning edge over their peers and competitors,” she states.

Best Corporate Leadership Programme – KAPLAN LEARNING INSTITUTE

E

ffective leaders are not groomed overnight. Companies often have to invest time and money to develop new leaders and enhance the competencies of their leaders. HRM Asia Readers Choice Awards’ winner for Best Corporate Leadership Programme Kaplan Learning Institute adopts a consultative approach and customises its programmes to suit the context of each company it works with. Andy Chew, Director of Business and Strategic Partnership, Kaplan Learning Institute, says, “We help HR to measure performance through our differentiated and innovation intervention. We understand each company differs in terms of culture and dynamics so we tailor-make our learning and development solutions for different companies.” Participants can be assured that they will be able to recognise the relevance of what they learned, and apply it to the context of their respective companies and industries. “My personal perspective is that acquiring knowledge does not mean that an employee will know how to apply it into the workplace. Relevance is found in the content of our programme through contextualisation as well as quality pedagogical design,” Chew says. For HR to achieve maximum capital investment in Kaplan’s leadership programme, employees will experience performance-based and outcome-oriented solutions. “Combining with our experiential learning approach, employees will be able to internalise the knowledge and this allows them to see how they can be applied back to the workplace efficiently and effectively,” Chew says.

Best Corporate Training Provider – ROHEI

L

earning is a lifelong journey, as is often said, and this is especially true when it comes to people management. To get the best out of employees, and to meet the changing needs of today’s business landscape, HR practitioners can turn to corporate training to improve the core skills of their people. With over 50 fulltime consultants in nine departments, HRM Asia Readers Choice Awards’ winner for Best Corporate Training Provider Rohei takes a holistic approach to the training and development needs of businesses. Rachel Ong, CEO of Rohei, says HR, and the organisation at large, can stand to benefit by tapping on corporate training services. “We give a very contextualised approach so depending on the needs analysis, we also look into contextualising for each level,” says Ong. “We train individuals of different levels from board members and C-suites leaders to middle management and rank and file employees. The learning methodology for each group differs, so the experience is different. I think corporate training would greatly benefit not just HR but across the entire organisation.” The programmes are designed to give participants the best learning experience, regardless of the duration of the programme. Rohei also puts much thought into the learner’s experience, including the physical space where the trainings are conducted. While some companies may not see corporate training as a priority, Ong assures that tangible results and outcomes can be seen when the company decides to set aside a budget and invest in training and development. “We find that when we are able to help a client transfer learning into results, they are very much more convinced that it is a worthwhile investment.” Employers can be confident that their investment is well-spent, and will go a long way towards the betterment of the business.

Best Corporate Relocation Provider – SANTA FE

J

osh Sims, General Manager of Moving Services, Santa Fe Relocation Services, says factors such as timing, control and costs are seeing global mobility and HR getting squeezed. “So, staff may have to do more work and they are being seen as a cost function rather than as someone that can help a company grow,” he says. Sims says this is where Santa Fe, winner of the Best Corporate Relocation Provider award, can come in and provide reporting, cost projections and statistics that can actually help staff prove their worth to the company. “The question we always ask HR and mobility functions is whether they know how much they are spending,” he says. “Yes, they go out for a tender but what are they actually paying a year later or two years later down the track? We have a global network across six continents, so that’s a lot of leverage we can use. There are also a lot of people on the ground. We’ve got great technology and we have a single platform that everyone works through.” Sims elaborates that Santa Fe can use single points of contact for assignees when they move around the world. “We are fast growing and have to be on the edge of new ideas within mobility and if we are not there, we will lose customers,” he says. Sims stresses that while his organisation has a responsibility to HR and to the business, the employee is still the number one focus. “The employee is the one that will inevitably keep our business going and the one that returns satisfaction scores of 10 out of 10 and the one that says they will use us again,” he says. “So, the biggest thing we try and teach our staff is to never lose sight of how important that one person’s move is. It’s not just about that one person; it’s also their families and their kids and everyone else that is involved in their move.”

Best Corporate MICE Venue

– SUNTEC SINGAPORE CONVENTION & EXHIBITION CENTRE

A

fter collecting the Best Corporate MICE Venue accolade, Grace Yang, Assistant Director of HR, Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, believes important elements such as customisation and flexibility played a crucial role in the organisation’s victory. With Suntec Singapore operating as an integrated facility with walking access to over 1,000 retail shops, 300 restaurants, six museums and a world-class performing arts centre, she feels it is an ideal venue choice for HR. “From a simple meeting of five people to a plenary session for 5,000, our venues offer customisable conferences, facilities and a multitude of flexible break-out rooms. So, with this 42,000 square metre of space within the centre, it allows clients to be creative and ensures the realisation of their specific needs,” Yang explains. She also elaborates that as HR practitioners, her counterparts should consider all these flexibilities as part of their core choices when they choose a training venue or site for a meeting or teambuilding session. “At Suntec Singapore, we listen to our clients’ views to develop and offer services like the high-speed WiFi – a free service to all guests. We also have innovative catering offerings to position us as the preferred place to meet,” she adds.

aving won the award for Best Corporate Caterer, Elvis Lee, Executive Director of Orange Clove emphasises that the company strives to provide a wellrounded service to a range of corporate clients. “When companies engage us for events, they can have a peace of mind, and more importantly, we live up to our promise of making them a hero,” Lee says. “So, we give them the trust and reliability that we can deliver, and we have been doing so for the past seven years.” External catering is often a convenient option for companies looking to organise events. “Companies can choose the venue of their own and have the comfort of their own office premises,” explains Lee. “We are providing convenience, and we can do a one-stop event solution. Not only with just food, we provide a sound system, programmes, lightings, and emcees as well.” Essentially, Lee says the client’s happiness is his company’s first priority. “We are in a happy business as we help people in celebrations. very company wants their employees to be at the best of health, and AsiaMedic strives to ensure organisations are able to achieve just that. Derrick Ong, Head of Corporate Communications at AsiaMedic, says the company helps its clients practice preventive health. “We offer corporate reports where we give them a holistic view of their wellness programmes,” says Ong. “We offer preventive health. So, when employees come for health screenings, we look at the diagnostics and analytics of each individual employee.” “When we detect illnesses from an early stage where it is 90% curable, we will go the extra mile to refer them to a specialist,” he adds. Just as importantly, AsiaMedic is quick to pick up on trends that can provide added convenience to clients and their staff. “The current trend is no longer about executive health screening, where staff come to the screening sector themselves,” he says. “Currently, the trend is for on-site services. Instead of them coming to our centre, our nurses and colleagues will go down to the company itself to conduct health screenings.” Ong also shares that AsiaMedic provides a holistic approach to employee health. “Currently, we have a scheme where we cater the exact same corporate services to dependents,” he explains. “On top of taking care of the company, we look after their family members as well.”

Best Serviced Apartment Group – FRASERS HOSPITALITY

F

rasers Hospitality outsmarted worthy competitors in the Best Serviced Apartment Group category this year. Tonya Khong, Area General Manager, Southeast Asia at Frasers Hospitality, stresses that the company works hand in hand with HR and mobility managers in providing the ideal serviced accommodation to meet the needs of travelling and relocating employees. Some of the advantages include a wide global network, an established brand, and a choice of apartment sizes and brand offerings to fit the profiles and needs of employees. “Our brand offerings include Fraser-branded Gold-Standard serviced residences (Fraser Suites, Fraser Place, and Fraser Residence), Modena by Fraser serviced residences for ‘road warrior’ travellers, Capri by Fraser hotel residences for e-generation travellers, and Malmaison and Hotel du Vin boutique lifestyle hotels,” she says. Khong also says there are similarities between the serviced apartment sector and the HR profession. “We share the same goals as HR in ensuring employees and their families settle in as effortlessly as possible into their new city of residence, so that they can focus on the main task at hand – work,” she explains. “With that in mind, we constantly keep attuned to the evolving needs of corporate travellers. We are constantly obtaining feedback from HR, and evaluating our offerings in order to anticipate and exceed the expectations of corporate travellers.” Frasers Hospitality provides a wide range of options for travelling employees, including prime locations, thoughtful spaces and conveniences, and family-friendly facilities and services. “Our offerings are all geared towards providing comfort, convenience and memorable experiences for corporate travelers and relocating executives,” Khong says.

Best Serviced Apartment by Property – LANSON PLACE

H

aving bagged the Best Serviced Apartment by Property gong, Martin Chan, General Manager, Lanson Place Winsland Serviced Residences, reiterates the fact that serviced apartments take relocation and moving very seriously. “For us, relocation represents almost 70% of our long-term businesses. As a result, the HR practices and policies that we implement in serviced apartments are equally, if not just, as important as what HR practices are being practiced in hotels,” he explains. “So, we deal with relocation companies who in turn, handle a lot of relocation and movements globally, and that to us, is a huge market for us to tap into. Hence, it’s all the more important for HR to be very much involved in this.” Chan, who could not attend the event, says a lot of HR departments turn to serviced apartments as a partner in relieving them of mundane and very tedious duties such as having to plan a relocation process. “So, as serviced apartment partners, we actually step in and provide these services for the relocation companies. They can move on to bigger and more important tasks at hand, while we handle the A to Z of their clients moving to Singapore from wherever they are in the world,” he elaborates. According to Chan, the plethora of serviced apartment options is an attractive prospect for relocating employees. “As serviced apartments, we offer them other options, and therefore, this gives their employer more choices and they know what’s out there in the market,” he says.

Best HR Tech (Payroll) — INFO-TECH SYSTEMS INTEGRATORS

H

R technology is increasingly becoming an important tool for supporting the function. HRM Asia Readers Choice Awards’ winner for Best HR Tech – Payroll, Info-Tech Systems Integrators affirms the benefits for HR to invest in technology. “By using the integrated solution, it is easier for HR practitioners to manage the software as a whole rather than handling it by piece by piece,” Babu Dilip, Director, Info-Tech Systems Integrators, says. By engaging in HR Technology, HR managers can look forward to smooth processes, where they can easily keep tabs on their duties. “It makes everything easier, from calculating employees’ salaries to managing leave applications and much more,” Dilip says. Implementing user-friendly HR Technology services is also highly beneficial for employees. For example, Dilip says they can be thoroughly assured that the calculation of their overtime is accurate, and they can clearly view details of their benefits packages through the online system. The payroll software is also packaged with leave records and employees can track their annual, medical, and child care leave allowances. This makes it easy for employees to check their leave eligibility, and keep track of their used and unused leave days. They can also get their payslips on time by logging on to the service portal to view and print their statements, without depending on HR to distribute them. Payslips can be printed on sealed payslip paper, or they can be sent through e-mail in a PDF format with password protection. On top of that, staff can also file their income tax returns with ease, as the system allows IR8A online submissions to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore as part of the Auto Inclusion function.

Best HR Tech (HRMS) – iHRMS

U

pon winning the award for Best HR Tech – HR Management Systems (HRMS), Wyman Poon, Group Business Manager at iHRMS, highlights the ways HR can benefit from services in the HRMS sector. They include logical workflows and smooth processes, customisable management reports, and up-to-date and accurate legislative requirements and changes. He also shares that iHRMS’ two-version system helps employees in a number of different ways. “We have two versions of our system: the on-premise host version and the software as a service (SAAS) version,” Poon says. “The first one has the best of both worlds. You pay a onetime cost and use your own server to host it. At the same time, your administrators and employees can log in externally, just like the SAAS version, but which would have incurred recurring monthly costs.” “In addition, you do not need to pay for any additional client access or administration licenses. All your employees can have access, as long as the administration sets the access levels for them,” he adds. With such implementation, companies may find an easier method in tackling HRrelated areas. “Employees can perform any HR transactions such as online applications for leave and reimbursement claims, updates to personal details, uploading of documents, and self-appraisals at their own convenient time from home or even overseas,” Poon explains. “This helps them to better manage their own schedules and strike a better work-life balance.”
