OUR In celebration of our history, we’ve been delving back into the Shipley College archives to find some inspiration for our new course guide. It’s amazing to see the style evolution of our brand and find courses we didn’t even know we offered! The Saltaire Collection also kindly shared with us some archival photos from the College over the years; from woodworking classes in the early 1900s to dressmaking showcases in what is now the Exhibition Hall, our College has always been an institute of high quality education.

48

THE SALTAIRE COLLECTION The Saltaire Collection was created by the people of Saltaire to tell the unique story of the World Heritage Site and is managed by the Saltaire World Heritage Education Association on behalf of Shipley College. It has a wealth of information for researchers, schools or anyone who would just like to know more about Saltaire. The time period covered is from the origins of Saltaire in the 1850s, with plans for building the village, to the present day. We have an online catalogue of over 5000 items and you can also make an appointment to visit The Collection in person. The Collection reveals new insights into Saltaire’s international connections and shows what it was like to live and work in the village and surrounding area through books, a variety of documents, maps, plans, art and objects, some of which belonged to the Salt family. saltairecollection.org

Learning new skills is an opportunity to build confidence and develop pride in your accomplishments. Overcoming challenges in a class can help increase your self-esteem, giving you something to feel good about!

TOP TIPS FOR THE One of the biggest factors in taking a great photograph is lighting. Even if you have the best equipment, not understanding the impact of lighting on your subject can make or break your photo. Finding nice even lighting which causes no distractions around your subject is ideal. Experiment with different angles depending on which way your light source is shining, and see how it changes the dynamic of your photos.

56

Don’t get bogged down in thinking you need the best or most expensive equipment to be able to take great photographs. As long as you know how to work your camera, understand light and composition, you can get amazing results with even the most basic of DSLR cameras. Practice makes perfect!

Learning to set your own focus point can help you finely control your photography. By default, many cameras will be set to automatically select an area of focus, which can result in a different outcome than expected. You can manually set the focus of your composition by holding down the auto-focus point selection button and using the navigation tool to finetune your selection point.

“I have been teaching photography both as a leisure activity and to students pursuing formal qualifications, and I think I have encountered – and helped to resolve - every possible difficulty and confusion that people can have with photography!” Steve Rayner, Photography Tutor

TOP TIPS FOR If you are having trouble with stitching, don’t be afraid to rethread the machine. This can often rectify problems with tight or loose threads and skipped stitches. Checking around the needle plate for any lint which needs clearing out can also help with these issues.

58

Find it difficult to thread a needle? Spraying the end of the thread with a bit of hairspray will strengthen it. This will make it much easier to insert the stiffened thread through the eye of a needle.

Using the right tool for the job always makes things easier, so make sure you are using the right type of needle for your project! There are different needle types for different fabrics, such as stretch or more delicate fabrics and even thicker materials like leather. It is recommended to swap out your needle after every 8 hours of sewing for optimum stitching.

TOP TIPS FOR

62

Eager cake decorators often make the mistake of not waiting for their cake to completely cool before icing.

If you have trouble getting a smooth finish with your icing, try applying a ‘crumb coat’ before your final layer.

Piping buttercream can create some really fun and interesting patterns for decorating your cakes.

This can often result in a sticky melted mess! If you’re short on time, pop your cake in the freezer to speed up the process. This can also be handy if you need to bake ahead of time - cake freezes well and doesn’t take much time to defrost.

Spread a very thin layer of icing over the cake and wait for it to fully dry. This seals in moisture and any loose crumbs before applying your main covering. This technique gives you a clean and professional finish.

Experiment with different nozzles on a sheet of baking paper before applying directly to your cake once you get the hang of it, you’ll be creating beautiful decorations in no time!

“I began cake decorating as an enthusiastic student, and over the past 15 years I have learnt so much. I love to pass on what I have learnt and improve my own skills from my students’ ideas. To see students develop and create cakes beyond what they thought possible is reason on its own to teach.” Maxine Sains, Cake Decorating Tutor
