(little miss Universe Kenya 2020) Anita & Joshua Gitonga

Anita is a 12-year-old girl and loves all things creative as well as fashion, as her middle name depicts, “Mumbi” meaning one who creates. Her creative trait and sense of fashion can be seen to come from her father who is an interior designer and her paternal grandmother who she is named after, whose taste for fashion is still evident at her old age. Anita often attempts designing outfits for her doll and has perfected the art of braiding hair. It will be no surprise if she pursues this line in future. She has also occasionally indicated that she would like to be a doctor. This can be attributed to the many visits to the hospital as she battled severe food allergies within the first 3 years of her life. Up to the age of two, she was highly dependent on camel milk with allergic reactions that made her look like a skin cancer patient. Fast forward to this day, it is a miracle that she is thriving as a model, with her latest achievement being crowned as the reigning Little Miss Universe-Kenya 2020.

Anita’s days are filled with juggling between school and other activities. She takes piano classes on Saturdays and participates in swimming as well as ballet during the week in school. In the midst of all these activities, her life is centered around her 8-year old brother, Joshua. Anita has demonstrated responsibility as the elder sibling to Joshua who has always looked up to her. After overcoming the food allergy, Anita started showing a love for being in front of the camera to a point whereby she was enrolled in modelling school just before she turned 9 years. Joshua admired the progress of his sister within a few weeks of training and he followed suit. They have both been participating in pageants every year since 2017, except for 2020 when Joshua opted to take a short break.

Joshua has proved to discover his potential as he has excelled in modelling and has since been awarded Tiny Mr. Kenya 2017 (Little Mr. & Miss Kenya), Little Prince of Africa, 2018 (Little Prince & Princess of Africa) and Junior Mr. Africa (Prince Princess International in Thailand, 2018) and Mini Mr. World-Kenya, 2019. During this period, Anita has inspired Joshua to keep going even when the it seemed challenging. This has been evidenced by the titles that he has acquired. Apart from modelling, Joshua is passionate about soccer which he trains every weekend. He constantly keeps up to date with the trends in the sports arena. He also loves science and is looking to pursue activities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). He keeps his mind challenged by watching episodes on experiments and innovation, with his favorite being Da Vinci Kids. He is due to enroll in Young Engineers club in his school. His ambition in STEM has been further been made possible after he and Anita were offered 1-year free membership in Young Aviators of Africa, following recognition of their modelling achievements by their school.

Anita is natural when on stage and loves being on the runway. She has been awarded Little Miss Photo Model, 2017 (Little Mr. & Miss Kenya), Mini Princess of Africa, 2018 (Little Prince & Princess of Africa), Little Miss Africa (Prince Princess International in Thailand, 2018) and Little Miss UniverseKenya, 2020. She will be participating in the international competition of Little Miss Universe 2021 in Georgia. This will be her second time to compete at the international level. Her crowning as Little Miss Universe-Kenya came as a pleasant surprise and she would like to challenge herself further as she realizes her potential. Anita and Joshua are both animal lovers. They are both volunteers at the Nairobi National Park as part of their wildlife conservation activities. In light of his passion for sports as well as humanity, Joshua would like to be involved in activities that support sports in marginalized areas to give hope to under privileged children. As the reigning Little Miss Universe-Kenya, Anita would like to further engage in activities involving human-wildlife conflict resolution as she seeks avenues to finance these activities even beyond her reign. Participating in modelling has been one of the best things that has happened to Anita and Joshua. It has provided a platform to enhance their creativity and confidence levels. Every child is unique. Their potential needs to be explored and nurtured. And hence just as Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
