Understanding Yourself and Defining Your Career Goals

66 Mandatory or Optional

CareerLeader

CareerLeader is one of the most comprehensive and best-used MBA self-assessment tools. Designed and developed by career professionals at Harvard Business School, CareerLeader helps you identify the career paths and cultures that are the best fit for you, based on your interests, skills and motivators. An individual report will give you guidance for translating your profile into a career goal and developing an action plan to reach it.

You are required to bring a copy of the report with you to your first meeting with your Career Consultant as it will form the basis of your initial discussions. Your report will also be referred to in some of the careers workshops.

Mandatory Prerequisites/Preparation None

Objectives: CareerLeader will allow you to: • Think about what type of career is the best fit for you. Typically, 70-80% of MBAs don’t know what their career goal is when they enrol • Assess yourself on the three most important elements of career satisfaction and success: interests, values, and abilities • Get an objective view of what is most important to you, rather than relying on the advice or pressures from others • Articulate the reasons for your career choice to potential employers, at job interviews and networking events. • •

Outcomes CareerLeader will: Form the basis of a dialogue with your Careers Adviser Enable you to understand your personal drivers and motivators, and then assess how these are reflected in different career options • Provide the basis for reflection as your MBA and job search progresses

1:1 Career Coaching and Advisory Support MBA Career Consultants Our experienced professional MBA Career Consultants provide one to one advisory sessions for all our MBA students. Each student undertaking a job search will be assigned to a consultant, with whom they can start to work in Michaelmas term. Students who are returning to their employers or starting their own venture will have an opportunity to engage with a consultant during Lent and Easter terms to focus on personal development coaching. All our consultants have the experience and skills to offer career advice and support across a range of topics; however, if your assigned consultant thinks it would be useful for you to see one of the other members of the team, this will be arranged on a referral basis. Students also have the opportunity to engage with all of our consultants through plenary and small group sessions, workshops and surgeries. The career consultant’s role is to support you in getting the job you want, offering advice and honest feedback as you undertake your job search. They will: • work with you to identify your longer term career goals and a plan to realise these based upon your skills, motivators and interests • in doing so, challenge your assumptions, give you feedback, broaden your horizons and support you in key decision making • provide industry / career specific advice and make recommendations of where to gain additional information and support • support you in preparation for interviews • work with you to identify where you may be getting stuck and help you unblock whatever is getting in the way Your career consultant will hold you accountable for making progress against your plan and you will be expected to follow up on actions agreed. Sign-up for advisory sessions is through the Online Careers Centre (OCC). You are required to have completed the Careers Leader questionnaire and printed off your report to bring with you to your first advisory session. Note that all students who plan to work with a consultant are required to complete all mandatory careers sessions. After your initial session, further appointments with advisers will be available throughout the term, booked through the OCC. You will be able to schedule up to three appointments per term; additional appointments may be approved by the Careers Office as needed. We expect each student undertaking a job search to meet their consultant at least once during the programme (either in person or via Skype).

Dates and times can change because of unforeseen circumstances and many of the courses are streamed so please refer to your MBA timetable for the latest information.

Cambridge MBA Careers Best Practice Guidelines The purpose of the Cambridge MBA Careers Best Practice Guidelines is to promote a positive, productive and collaborative relationship amongst students, Careers Consultants, employers and the Careers team. Based on our experience, these guidelines ensure an efficient and effective use of the time and commitment of all parties involved, resulting in maximum benefit for all. Careers provision, advisory and employer events • Register for workshops, surgeries and advisory in advance via the Online Career Centre, to ensure a place at your desired session. • Register for employer events in advance via the Online Career Centre, so that we can plan for the appropriate room size and catering requirements. • If you are unable to attend a session for which you’ve registered, cancel your registration online as soon as possible, with at least 24 hours notice. Someone else may be able to register in your place. This is particularly important for 1:1 advisory sessions. • Students who repeatedly miss sessions which they do not cancel may be blocked from future sessions. Students who miss 1:1 sessions with their career consultant without cancelling may be charged for the session. • Arrive punctually, at least five minutes before the scheduled start time of the session; late arrivals may be refused entry to prevent interruption. Plan to attend the entire session. • Come to careers provision sessions with clear objectives, having done some research and prepared questions in advance. • Come to employer events prepared to interact with recruiters and having done some research on the company and job requirements. Take advantage of the opportunity to create a positive first impression, sell yourself, and expand your network. Always present a professional image of yourself and the Cambridge MBA. • Follow-up on actions agreed including required research, reflection, homework and/or preparation for the next session. • Please consider employer events as a professional engagement and take note of the dress code required for each occasion. • Address any urgent queries to careersoffice@jbs.cam.ac.uk – we endeavor to answer all emails in two working days. Job Applications • Apply only for opportunities that interest you, fit your profile and for which you meet the requirements. If you are unsure, seek advice from a member of the Careers team. • Research the company fully, using the resources available from Careers, the Business Information Centre, and your classmates. • Always submit a cover letter and CV (unless otherwise specified), which are tailored to the job opportunity and checked for correct grammar and spelling. We encourage you to ask a classmate to review your cover letter and CV‘s prior to submitting your application. Ensure that you submit your application to the employer’s schedule, as applications submitted after a deadline will usually not be considered. • If the application process is not being administered through Careers, employers will contact you directly, and Careers will not be able to provide updates on the status of your application. Please be aware that not all employers inform applicants who are unsuccessful.
