The three circular econo1ny business 1nodels in construction available to the industry The three initiatives arose from a consultancy commissioned by the Corfo Construye2025 program, within the framework of one of the axes of the C&DW Roadmap and Circular Economy in Construction. Along with reviewing 119 international and 12 Chilean models, the study made an open design platform for social and economic housing available to stakeholders in the ecosystem; a marketplace for waste and construction materials; and a passport of materials. All this, with the aim of accelerating the transition towards the circular economy in construction. CRISTIAN GONZALEZ FARFAN I JUL 27, 2021 AT 6:00 AM

ccording to discouraging figures from the actors of the circular economy in construction, this industry is the largest consumer of raw materials and other resources in the world. About half of the world's steel production is used in construction, to which is added more than three billion tons of raw materials. Of these, concrete and aggregates represent between 65% and 75% of the volume. On the other hand, construction and demolition waste (C&DW) represents around 35 percent of solid waste globally, and 34% nationally. In response to this unfavorable context, the C&DW Circular Economy in Construction Roadmap was born , a kind of guide to move towards a circular economy in industry, led by the C&DW Strategy Advisory Committee. Made up of the Ministries of Housing, Environment and Public Works, plus Corfo and its Construye2025 program, the Consultative Committee drew up five axes on which the roadmap is based. One of them is "ecosystems and value chains for circular economy markets under construction". Taking this axis into account, Construye2025 commissioned a consultancy with the aim of accelerating the transition from the construction industry to the circular economy. The idea was to have a document with business models of circular economy in construction that had economic and technical feasibility for the industry and, therefore, that would bring circular solutions to entrepreneurs and innovators. The study, mandated by Construye2025, was implemented by the consultancy Social Renovable, which exhaustively reviewed 119 international circular business models adapted to construction and 12 Chilean ones. However, even more important was the development of three business models adaptable to the Chilean reality: an open design platform for social and economic housing; a marketplace for materials and construction waste; and a building materials passport. "We know that construction is a complex area due to the amount of waste it generates. A survey was made of the state of the art in business models in the circular economy under construction and later in Chile. All the success stories worldwide were reviewed and once we understood what the capture of value and innovation was like, we developed three own models adapted to Chile and that met some characteristics: interdependent, that were scalable, were replicated and had external innovation ", Explains the Chilean Cristian Zegers Cadiz, who together with his Brazilian partner in the consultancy, Henrique Sala Benites, were in charge of the investigation.
For its part, Sala Benites details that "each of the models is focused on a specific stage of the value chain. There is a very important point, and that is that the circular economy is not only about managing waste at the end of the life cycle of resources, but it is also necessary to change the entire system and focus on the design part ". Each of the circular economy models were made available through the final document developed by both Social Renewable specialists, and which can be downloaded at the following link , in addition to the other national and international models that they were able to research.

Alejandra Tapia, Construye2025 Sustainability Coordinator, values the tender awarded by this consultancy to prepare the study, insofar as "we needed someone to systematize this information, which models existed as references, along with expert opinions and it would be expressed in three business models . It was a theoretical exercise, but with the idea of landing it. The experience of Cristian and Henrique helped a lot. The latter is developing his doctoral thesis on circular economy in construction, and Cristian has been advising companies in these terms. It was a good duo that had many foundations ".
