Hornsby Library

28-44 George Street (Entrance Hunter Lane) Hornsby NSW 2077, 9847 6813 TIPS FOR THE NOVICE

1 Firstly, gather up as many of the family’s birth, death and marriage certificates as you can find. Photocopies will do. In fact, it is a good idea to photocopy originals, work from the copies, and file the originals away for safekeeping.

2 Talk to family members, particularly elderly relatives, and if possible record what they remember about parents, grandparents, school days, family events, etc.

3 Next, sort out the information you have about each member of the family. Draw up or download a family tree chart to record everything you know, being careful to record dates accurately and without ambiguity. Dates help to sort the family out when there are several relatives of the same name.

4 It is very important to note where your information has come from in order to keep track and always verify the authenticity of the source.

5 Refer to the handbooks and guides to various aspects of family history which are available at Hornsby Library.

HUNTING FOR

YOUR ANCESTORS?

Hornsby Shire Library and Information Services has a wealth of research resources for the novice and the expert.

The Family History Collection is located at Hornsby Library, in the Local Studies Reading Room, adjacent to the Information Desk.

The resources in this collection can be used in the library only, although many of the books are available in our lending collection.

The number of indexes and databases available for the family historian has increased rapidly over the past few years. Many internet sites now provide information of interest to family historians.

2 | hornsby.nsw.gov.au/whatson Image: Fagan Park Here we stand on the cusp of summer, preparing for the school holidays and ready to enjoy the festive season. It is the perfect time of year to get out with your family and enjoy everything our Bushland Shire has to offer.

This guide will help, giving you a handy calendar of all the great events that are taking place throughout the approaching summer months.

If you’re looking for something to do between these events, don’t forget there are plenty of other great opportunities for fun that are available every day of the year. For instance, if you’re looking for a nice place to relax for a picnic or barbecue you should visit some of the many great parks scattered across our Shire.

It’s not my place to pick favourites, but I strongly suggest that Fagan Park and Lisgar Gardens should be on your must-see list. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, there are a range of excellent bushwalking trails and bike tracks that are well worth exploring. Meanwhile, on the truly scorching hot days, the best option is to head to one of our picturesque waterways. Brooklyn and Berowra Waters are ideal spots to get your feet wet, while if you’re looking for a full day out you should head to Dangar Island or Bar Island on the Hawkesbury River. The Indigenous and colonial history on offer on both islands will make it worth the visit, let alone the spectacular native wildlife you will see.

Visit discoverhornsby.sydney to find out everything your Shire has to offer.
