With Heartfelt Gratitude Dear Friends of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School, The 2012-2013 school year at OLSH was marked by milestones. At the same time that we celebrated our 80-year legacy of providing students with an education like no other, we achieved record enrollment, demonstrating our school’s continued value, viability, vibrancy and relevance in a changing world. Your donations made the difference and together we achieved a higher standard. Without question, OLSH is a school of substance. Our rich traditions and history, focus on faith and our Felician values, and warm, welcoming culture form the foundation for our status at the leading edge among schools in our region. From an academic perspective, we were blessed last year by the news that two of our seniors were named National Merit Finalists, and another was recognized as a Semi-finalist. Our faculty engaged in a wide variety of professional development activities, and incorporated emerging technologies into their teaching approaches. And the Class of 2013 garnered over $6 million in college scholarship offers over four years, more than any other class in school history. Our students achieved impressive outcomes outside of the classroom as well, earning the school’s first WPIAL boys cross country championship; participating in an inaugural OLSH mission trip; achieving more athletic playoff berths than ever; and directly engaging in over 30 service and charitable giving activities. Over the summer we installed state-of-the-art technology in each of our classrooms that rivals or exceeds instructional equipment found in public and private schools across the U.S. The completion of this project would not have been possible without the exceptional support of our benefactors. We are grateful to all who support OLSH each day with time, talent, treasure and prayer. Please enjoy the 2012-2013 Advancement Review and the impressive array of OLSH achievements included herein. In addition, we invite you to review the names of the over 500
individuals and businesses that partnered with us last year to advance the mission of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School. May God’s blessings surround and sustain you!
With sincerest gratitude on behalf of the OLSH Board of Directors, Administration, Faculty, Staff and Students,
2012-2013 SENIOR ADMINISTRATION Terry O’Rourke Donoghue President Tim Plocinik Principal Cheryl L. Karashin Vice President of Advancement Cathy T. Neubert Business Manager

The OLSH Fund The cornerstone of philanthropic giving at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School, The OLSH Fund supports all aspects of an OLSH education: academics, the arts, athletics, technology, faith and tuition assistance. Giving to The OLSH Fund increased for the sixth consecutive fiscal year, demonstrating the confidence OLSH parents, alumni, friends and the greater community have in OLSH and our mission. Growth of The OLSH Fund is essential to the continued legacy of excellence at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School for generations to come. Your gifts to The OLSH Fund in 2012-2013 directly impacted our students, faculty and staff , enabling them to experience unique opportunities and to continue to achieve at a high standard. In addition to the technology enhancements described on the next pages, your partnership enabled us to: • Supply teachers with resources on their wish lists, such as the YOUCAT (Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church) for the religion department, kettlebells, super bands, and foam rollers for phys ed classes, and ceramics supplies for art classes. • Enable faculty and staff to attend professional development workshops and seminars, such as the National Council of Teachers of Math national conference, the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) 2013 Convention, the NCEA Law Symposium, and the College Board’s AP Institute, to stay on the front edge of advancements in our fields. • Ensure the continued safety and well-being of all students by offering in-depth safety training for staff, creating a position for a second guidance counselor, inviting faculty to participate in updated Student Assistance Program training, and adding facility enhancements to OLSH’s already secure campus.

Technology Initiative OLSH launched a comprehensive technology exploration and acquisition initiative during the 2012-2013 school year. Over $140,000 was raised, making possible the implementation of a variety of technological upgrades and enhancements, including iPads for the Reading and Basic Algebra classes to help meet the learning needs of students in those courses, an iPad loaded with educational apps for every OLSH teacher, interactive projectors located in our classrooms, and an IPTV device capable of streaming WCHR News and other video material to students. These efforts, combined with wireless infrastructure upgrades, a new faculty/staff email system and other enhancements keep OLSH on the leading edge of classroom technology among Catholic, public and other private schools in our region.
iPads in the Classroom OLSH’s Reading and Basic Algebra courses were equipped with iPads for student use this year as a result of the school receiving $25,000 in grant funding from the St. Francis Fund of Felician Services Inc. Students in these courses gained access to online resources designed to support learning through visual and kinesthetic activities. Students were able to focus on their learning style strengths as the courses have become more centered on applying classroom lessons to real-life situations.
iPads for Teachers A benefactor partnered with OLSH to provide funding to equip each teacher with an iPad, allowing our faculty to begin to explore the educational possibilities associated with the academic disciplines reflected in their teaching. Training sessions included a general overview of the capabilities of the iPad technology and one-on-one meetings with an expert who shared apps and resources specific to different academic areas. Teachers received gift cards to purchase apps specific to their courses and curricula and are excited to continue using the iPads in the classroom in new and interesting ways.

Classroom Technology At this year’s OLSH Legacy Gala, we “made our needs known” to guests and asked for support to replace the outdated TVs in our classrooms through the Fund the Vision campaign. Thanks to an outstanding response, a matched gift, and a successful social media effort, those needs were realized. This summer Epson Bright Link Pro ultra-short-throw interactive projectors and Apple TVs were installed in each classroom, turning our traditional whiteboards into digital, interactive boards. Teachers are able to project content wirelessly and our Haivision Viper MAX IPTV device allows for streaming of video. WCHR student-produced news announcements, Channel One news, select cable TV channels and a library of on-demand options are now viewed as 80-inch projected images.

OLSH Legacy Gala The 2013 OLSH Legacy Gala was marked by record-breaking attendance, donations, and participation. The event, held March 2, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh Airport, was themed Amazing Journey in celebration of OLSH’s 80th year. The Legacy Award was presented to the Felician Sisters for their unfailing dedication to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School since its opening in 1932. The record 300 attendees were made up of 40 Felician Sisters, over 60 alumni, and many current parents, faculty, staff and other friends of OLSH. Grossing over $130,000, the Legacy Gala was the most successful of our annual fundraising events, raising funds for student programs, athletics, arts and academics, as well as technology, through the Fund the Vision campaign. The evening, which featured lively bidding, a student performance and even a surprise visit from Bishop David Zubik, was a brilliant celebration of OLSH’s rich history and future vitality.

Scholarships & Endowed Funds Access to an OLSH education remains vitally important as we work to advance the mission of the Felician Sisters, to educate a socially and economically diverse student body. While OLSH remains one of the most affordable Catholic high schools in the region, many families require additional financial support, which comes from tuition assistance donations, scholarships and endowed funds. Gifts to these funds make it possible for talented young men and women to earn a transformative OLSH education.
ADOPT A STUDENT PROGRAM – This program is an opportunity for individuals to donate scholarship dollars to students at OLSH with significant financial need. Commitments range from partial scholarships to full financial responsibility for educational costs.
ANONYMOUS INDEPENDENT SETTLEMENT SERVICES, LLC TIM PLOCINIK AND CINDY LOUGHMAN JAMES ROONEY BERNADINE SKRABA
ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS – A named Endowed Scholarship is an ideal way to honor a person not only at the time it is created, but also far into the future, as these scholarships last in perpetuity. Interest is used to support the scholarship while the principal continuously grows. Current Endowed Scholarships:
THE SISTER MARY DENISE BERNAS SCHOLARSHIP THE POLESKI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
10
NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS – Scholarships can be established in honor or memory of an individual. Annual donations allow the scholarship to remain active. Active Named Scholarships:
THE SUSAN FAHEY SCHOLARSHIP THE ALISON J. MICHEL SCHOLARSHIP YOUTHTOWNE YOUNG SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP
EITC Businesses in the state of Pennsylvania can reallocate money from their state taxes to financial aid at OLSH. The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program allows businesses to receive a 90% tax credit (if donating for two consecutive years), and families at OLSH receive tuition assistance. We extend a special thanks to the following companies who donated to OLSH tuition assistance via the Scholastic Opportunity Scholarship, the Bishop’s Education Fund, The Bridge Foundation, and Bravo Foundation through EITC during the 2012-2013 school year:
COPELAND FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES GREATER PITTSBURGH SURGICAL ALLIANCE, PC JIAN STRATEGIC MARKETING QUAKER CAPITAL MANAGEMENT CORPORATION ROHRICH AUTOMOTIVE GROUP
TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND – Tuition Assistance represents a vital component of OLSH Advancement efforts. Gifts to this program enabled 40% of OLSH families to receive financial aid.

This year. the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School Scholarship Organization was established, providing local businesses the opportunity to point their donations directly to OLSH, with 100% of the funds donated going to the students. Several new businesses have partnered with OLSH, taking advantage of this outstanding opportunity from the State of Pennsylvania and providing needed assistance to our students. Thank you to our new partners, whose contributions will support tuition assistance for the 2013-2014 school year and who will be recognized for the amount of their contributions in next year’s Advancement Review.

These benefactors have demonstrated a strong commitment to the mission of OLSH and have helped to ensure the legacy of a tranformational OLSH education. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the members of the 2012-2013 President’s Leadership Council.

Alumni Giving OLSH Alumni Make a Difference Alumni form the foundation of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School’s 80 year legacy. OLSH alumni make a difference in the world daily, and many have made the choice to make a difference at their alma mater. With alumni partnership, OLSH continues the tradition of faith and service, and excellence in academics, arts and athletics that over 3,000 graduates have experienced. Alumni gifts of all sizes make a difference at OLSH, with each gift helping to ensure that excellence continues to define the OLSH experience. This year, the newly formed Alumni Council issued a Challenge to inspire fellow alumni to participate in The OLSH Fund. In addition to recognition in this publication, the OLSH Class of 1978 will be recognized at OLSH Homecoming in the fall for having the largest number of participants during the 2012-2013 OLSH Fund. Each year OLSH will recognize classes for their participation and commitment to the legacy of OLSH – past, present and future.

Blessed Angela Society The Blessed Angela Society was created to honor the individuals who have shown uncommon commitment to OLSH through planned giving. Individuals or foundations are eligible for membership in the Blessed Angela Society if they choose OLSH to be the recipient of gifts when they become available in the future by way of various occurrences; for example, through a retirement plan, IRA, or life insurance policy. Planned giving builds the endowment fund for the school; therefore the donor is supporting tuition assistance, faculty support, and the expansion of academic and extracurricular activities. The success of the endowment fund ensures continued and increased vitality of OLSH from one generation to the next. Without such gracious benefactors, the long future that is paved ahead of OLSH would not be as secure.

ANTHONY AND JOSEPHINE ‘48 BILLOTTI + FRANK AND ROSEMARY HELDERLE MR. & MRS. DOUGLAS MARVIN DR. & MRS. DAVID SCHAUB HAROLD J. STOLL + DONNA J. STUDENY RON & CATHY TISCH RONALD TRUSKOWSKI THOMAS AND MARYANN ‘68 WOOD Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, the foundress of the Felician Sisters, had a deep love and devotion to God, the Blessed Mother, and serving God’s people. As a young girl, she was inspired to care for the poor and underprivileged and committed her life to serving the poor and marginalized, first as a lay person, and later in creating a new religious community. The Sisters of St. Felix of Canatalice, or Felician Sisters as we know them, is a community founded on the values and ideals of St .Francis and the active-contemplative model of St. Felix of Cantalice. Those members of the Blessed Angela Society allow OLSH to continue in Blessed Angela’s mission to “serve Him with a joyful heart.”
