EPHEMERAL PILGRIMAGE

Type: Hybrid (Urban & architecture)

Year: 2022

Area: GFA - 2.4 million m²

Currently, more than 2 million pilgrims from around the world are stated to attend the five-day Hajj in 2021. The living tents in the Mina Tent City are one of the places where people spend most of their pilgrimage time to gether. In the light of the pandemic these spaces are not only too confined but if not treated right, are capable of jeopardizing the entire experience of the pilgrimage. The tents were a great leap in the living challenges of Minabut they require a complete overhaul to continue serving the pilgrims in the years to come.

The figure is speculated to grow to 5 - 10 million visitors in the coming decades which is sure to push the design of current system to its limits. While increasing capac ity is certainly the goal, what other solutions can offer better arrangements - how to unlock more space and give quality accommodation to pilgrims who spend their time here?

Brief: The design challenge is to conceive a modular and fragmented solution for housing Hajj pilgrims in the city of Mina. The stay duration is aimed to have quality oriented living arrangement, considering the dry and rig idly hot climate of the region, that is fireproof, hygienic, public friendly and incremental.

First Floor

For female pilgrims, the first floor is designated. A closet for personal storage and electrical outlets for charging will be provided in each bed. Being a requirement for all. A connecting terrace will provide access to the nearby library/multi purpose room.

Ground Floor

The primary entrance to the clus ters of hotels is on the ground floor. The major site circulation is the primary thoroughfare. By separating the pilgrims into separate regions, this thoroughfare also controls the crowds by preventing overcrowd ing. There is a central common area in the motel itself. There is a courtyard on the first level and a library/multipurpose room that the pilgrim kamaah can use for prayer, socializing, dining, or just as a place to ponder.

18

Roofing

Along with protecting the pilgrims from the elements, the roof layer also serves as a service space. On the roof level, there are integrated solar panels, water tanks, and wind towers. This layer is essential for the lodging’s interior comfort.

Structural & Facade System

The steel post and beam system with bolted connections, which allows for removal in accordance with programmatic needs, is the principal structure used in the scheme. It is backed up to give it more stiffness. In addition to providing fittings for the building envelopes, this system also offers room to run ducts and conduits.

MOSQUE AS AN INSTITUTION

Type: Educational Architecture

Year: 2016

Area: GFA - 3500 m²

The mosque played a major part in spreading of edu cation in the Muslim World, and the association of the mosque with education remained one of its main char acteristics throughout history, and, the school became an indispensable appendage to the mosque. From the earliest days of Islam, the mosque was the center of the Muslim community, a place for prayer, meditation, re ligious instruction, political discussion, and a library. And anywhere Islam took hold, mosques were established, and basic religious and educational instruction began. Once established, mosques developed into well-known places of learning pharmacology, engineering, astronomy and courses on grammar, rhetoric, logic, mathematics, and astronomy, geography and chemistry were taught in the mosques.

Brief: The main focus is to re- imagine the mosque as institution that is used for multi-purpose functions. The time lapse of mosque will give us continuity of activities. The mosque will be used 24 hours with different activi ties like library, Islamic gallery, rejuvenation space. The project will contain religious architecture throughout the time and how it changed referring to the past. Bringing in the religious practices under one umbrella and designing it using Islamic elements that are practiced today.

THE MEET HUB

Private project (Islamabad, Pakistan)

Client: The Meet Hub

Type: Interior Architecture / Product Design

Year: 2018 Area: GFA - 160 m²

Meet-hub was created to be an innovative multi-purpose cafe lounge for the entrepreneurial world. More collabora tive, local and independent, aligned with the issues involved in the debate on functionality, new forms of incuba tors and quality concerns. In order to achieve the multi-functionality an open plan design was proposed along with the light-integrated suspended ceilings , which creates intangible buffer between three zones of the space (read ing/library area, leisure area and jamming area) without obstructing the visual connection through the rectangular space. The main frame of suspended ceilings, which also acts as linear chandeliers, were conceived in wood with metal clamps reinforcing the joinery details.
