This residential project is designed for a family who want to build their new house near the ocean in Taiwan. The house is around 1,400 sq.ft. Followings are the project contents. Site Target User Programming Floor Plans Elevations Perspectives Materials Furniture

Site This house is located in the Sanchich township in the north of Taiwan. To the west side is the Taiwan Straight, and it also neighbors with Shimen District, Jinshan District, Tamsui District, and has a boundary, Datun Mountain, with Beitou District. With the 101 highway crossing this district, traffic is convenient. The unique terrain feature is rock and sand mixed shore, which has eroded and accumulated; the wide intertidal zone has algal reef which is also called by people as “coral stone.” Because Datun Mountain is in the south east, it can’t stop wind blowing; the weather in this district is cold and humid in winter and hot and dry in summer. Recent years, few coffee store and restaurants have opened, many artists moved into this district, and more and more people want to visit. On the other side, the government transforming agricultural land

Target User This house is designed for a four-member family. They really enjoy weekends with friends and family. Sometimes they have visitors stay one or two nights. The father always busy during week days; the mom likes cooking, baking, and painting. Daughter is studying in other city, and she only comes home on weekends; the son is still in high school. He plans to study in the university near home. Family Members profile Father

Moodboard / Concept My concept was “Pendulum Effect. “ Humans’ actions decide the design of a space, and a space can affect humans’ actions and reactions. This is a mutual effect, just like “Pendulum Effect.” My concept reflects in this project: people adjust space for different actions, and actions are affected by interior spaces. For this office, the interior design is “spaces affect actions, and actions create spaces,” and it is highly modular, with multifunctional workstations or an open conference space. Those areas can be used when people need them, this is “actions create spaces.” Moreover, through the different height of floors, people have to move their feet to either go up or down; this is “spaces affect actions.”

This workstation is a customized design piece for this project. Since the office will be built in the future, we need to think about the network between people. This workstation is good for group projects, and it also can be used as a small informal presentation area. The materials are glass, particleboard and metal. Glass is used for cabinet doors; particleboard is mainly used in this system, and metal is used for legs. Glass doors can

Branding Strategy The goal for the design firm, Chi Studio, is to bring harmonious, highly comfortable, and sophisticated interior design to clients. The studio is based on the desire of creating an individual design for every client. Human beings are the center of actions: actions will reflect in spaces, and design will affect reactions of humans. People will be the main consideration of designs. To make their career more successful, Chi Studio has a furniture design department to customize furniture to have unique aesthetic objects in spaces. Chi Studio will develop as a green business. Beyond using green materials, Chi Studio encourages employers to keep sustainable practices in their daily office. For the space, it will be open space without solid panels. The first reason is bringing the sunlight into the office; and the second is to break down the dividers for more sharing and brainstorming opportunities.

People usually say that we can broaden our view through traveling. Reading is a special way of travel. Travel is an experience of exploring and adventuring. Words record past, and books are mediums which store those memories. Our concept was traveling. As time goes by, technology helps us get information faster, but books still play an important role in our life. Some people still like to read hardcopies rather than kindle. Our goal was to design a space for the community to enhance the mind and relax by reading. In our space, we encourage people to read, play, and communicate with each other. Through traveling and adventuring with words, our life and knowledge will be enriched. To symbolize travel, we used railroads and hot air balloons as our main design ideas. Railroads on the ground also became a wayfinding sign, which guides people to the entire space; furthermore, we minimized the use of materials to reduce distraction and cost. Our elegant space design will be more focused on letting users sense the environment. Moreover, daylighting in our design reduced the cost of electricity and brought the warm and natural feeling inside the entire space.

Educational data shows the highest level of education attained by San Francisco residents is in Potrero Hill. Over 70% of residences have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is higher than the San Francisco Metro (27%). We thought this data told us that people study a lot in this district; therefore, the target users for this project will be children and local community.

Branding Strategy The specialty in our design was periodical book sharing activities. The events will be held every holiday, important historical date, and season; such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day, to name a few. In our project, we designed a book sharing event for Christmas. This event was focused on children of the neighborhood during the Christmas season. The goal of the event will be based on Christmas story sharing and handmade Christmas cards.

Concept My concept was “Nexus.” Gustav Stickley’s works were the connection of two different styles. He was the person who brought the new style into furniture design industry; however, he couldn’t keep up with trends, before his new style came out, and he went broke. Gustav Stickley was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, therefore I came up with the idea of using “origami” to form the entire structure. Origami has simple forms but complex folding, overlapping, and combination techniques, just like the Arts and Crafts movement represent: simple but romantic.
