In order to create a more vibrant lifestyle, an idea has been adopted to encourage mixed use of urban space. It is not limited to 2 dimensional level but upgraded to 3 dimensional levels, which means the integration of building functions. Taking an example as right, we imagine a residential complex, with retail, restaurant & leisure on its skirt building, equipped with a public gymnasium and pool on higher floor. The integrated function promotes the diversity & vitality of residential areas. Living is no longer the only behaviour in the area while more activities are encouraged. The privacy and the public can works even better with each other in urban space.

为了回应社会对环境议题的关注以及能源短缺问题,我们 构思了一种新型态的建筑。它搭载了前沿的技术,包含雨 水回收系统、太阳能发电以及日照控制机制。这些设备 能有效节约水源使用和减少对中央空调的依赖;更重要 的是,降低了建筑的营运成本。另一方面,我们建议建筑 应该与公交站点共构,透过地下通道、下沉广场、手扶电 梯与空中走廊的连接,串联成一个无缝接轨的步行环境, 提供一个更安全且具有效率的移动方式,减少对汽车的依 赖。这所有的努力都是为了节省城市居民的生活开销与时 间成本,缔造一个更聪明的生活方式。 To reflect social concern of environmental interest and energy shortage issues, we imagine a new form of architecture, which is accommodated with cuttingedge technologies, including rain recycling system, solar panels and sunlight shade control. They can properly save water, reduce the dependence on airconditioning and, more importantly, turn down the budget on property maintenance. On the other hand, the building is suggested to be constructed with the public transportation line. They are connected by a series of walkable space; consist of “Underground path,” “Sunken Plaza,” “Escalator” & “Elevated Linkway”. This is to aim at a “Seamless Walking Environment,” allowing people to travel in a more efficient and safe way by public transportation instead of relying on vehicles. It can also potentially save people’s time on looking for a parking space. The above effort is generated to save citizen’s money & time in city life toward a smarter lifestyle.

SMART INFRASTRUCTURE

这个想法是为了创造一个城市脊轴,将市政系统、公共设施和 开放空间结合为一体。它可以被区分为数个特色分区,提供各 式各样的城市活动平台。同时,这些分区的空间造型是对应市 政系统而设计的。举例而言,那树状的景观小品就是一个对应 排水管线与灌溉系统而设计的雨水收集装置。 This idea is to create an urban spine combining the infrastructure, public realm and open space as a whole. This spine can be divided into eight different characteristic sections, providing a variety of spaces for different urban activities. The form follows the functions of infrastructure. For example, the tree-like public art is a rain recycling installation connected to the sewage system and irritating system.

HOW TO MAKE A MORE REASONABLE CITY LAYOUT? STEP 1: Lake is set to reconnect the landscape context.

STEP 2: Lake surrounded by commercial building, maximising water landscape value.

STEP 3: Alongside the river bank, a series of building, ranged from 6-11 stories, will be built to form a green belt.

STEP 6: Finally, a more reasonable and legible city layout is established.

STEP 5: Around the service buildings, residential buildings will be built.

STEP 4: A range of service building are introduced to each subdivision as a core in a reasonable service radius.

One of city’s functions is to direct citizens to their destination. The legibility of city, therefore, is one of the most important thinking in urban design. In this project, the building height & volume becomes a catalyst to link the spatial sense between the hill & the river. They constitute a legible series of city images, Hill-Urban Core-HarbourRiver, providing a few sensible urban references for people’s life. Furthermore, this overall arrangement of urban form strategically follows the building’s function.

An artificial lake is located in the middle of the city core. In order to make its existence more reasonable, a number of urban functions are introduced to the lakeside. This makes sure that the population and density of human activities around the area. More people live & work on the lakeside, more valuable is the development of the lake.

DIVERSIFY THE EXPERIENCE OF CULTURE

现代城市发展中,对地方文化与历史的关注往往被后 置或忽略。为了重新获得这些品质,在这个项目里我 们将许多地方元素融入城市景观。举例而言,那些景 观灯柱就来自于 “白日千杆桅,夜里万盏灯”的诗 句。不只是硬体环境的建设,许多本地活动像是 “ 花鼓灯节”与 “舞龙”等都将被装载进这些景观空间 里。这些将提供公众更多样化的文化与历史体验。 The concern on local culture & history is always turned down or ignored in modern urban development. To reclaim these qualities, a few local elements are merged to urban landscape in the project. For instance, the lamp poles erected in the water are inspired by a line of poet, “thousands of pole mast in daytimes, tens thousands of lamps at night.” Not only the built environment but some social and local events like “Hub Lantern Festival” and “Dragon Parade” will be loaded to these landscaping spaces, etc. They provide the public diverse experiences of local culture & history.

Location: Yibin City, Sichuan Province Site Areas: 27 ha Map Section 在宜宾市,地方产业逐渐退出长江北岸工业区,遗留 下大量的工业建筑、宿舍和码头设施。它们变成城市 的特色与形象代表,代表著过往兴盛的工业历史。为 了延续这个空间品质与创造附加价值,我们研究了这 区域的典型肌理,并提出一些想法来提升建筑环境品 质,包括保留开放空间,以及将拥挤的宿舍群移除, 改建为办公、酒店建筑。借此延续空间特色,提升土 地价值。 In Yi-Bin city, local industries are gradually removed from industrial area on north bank of Yangzi River, left with massive areas of industrial building, dorm &port. They become a characteristic feature and icon of urban space, representing the past time of thriving industries. To last this quality and create additional value, we study the typical area of this zone, generating some specific ideas to upgrade the built environment. These ideas include preserving open spaces and replacing part of crowded dorm cluster by newly developed business & hotel buildings. All efforts are to inherit the spatial quality and increase land value.

RESPECT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXT

When the environment or an item exists in a city for a long term, it will become part of the city context. The site sat between the mountain & the river for few decades, with a number of industrial constructions standing in between. They witness history of the city, representing environmental and historic context, respectively. To inherit this value, we preserve a few historic landmarks like chimneys & warehouse, pose a few new buildings to refill the empty space and shape a couple of visual corridors connecting the mountain to the river. The effort is not only to keep the spatial quality but to last city history and spirit in modern life.

URBAN FORM FOLLOWS THE TOPOGRAPHY

基地地形看起来像把梯子从山体延伸进入 长江。因为这个特性,我们对于建筑、道 路与开放空间的安排都顺应著原有地形。 这造就了一个阶梯似的天际线,促使沿江 建筑群分享长江的景致。另外,这个设计 中的高差提供来访者有趣的行走与视觉经 验,特别是当他们走下阶梯,穿越历史保 留区,然后到达水岸边上。这是一个认识 与发现城市环境特质的绝佳机会。 The topography of the site looks like a steep stair extending from the mountain to Yangzi River. Because of this feature, we arrange the building, road and open space by following its original topography. This makes a stair-like skyline, ensuring every single building to share marvelous view toward Yangzi River. Also, this height difference in the design provides a more interesting walking & visual experience for visitors when they go down the stairs, pass through the historic area and approach the waterfront. This is a brilliant chance for them to identify and sense the city environment.

A TEAINDUSTRY-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT IN POER CITY Location:Poer City, Yunnan Province Site area: 23 ha 作为普洱茶的原乡,茶业在普洱市持续兴盛 了数百年。这个项目就是为了启动一个开发 模式来促进这个产业的繁荣。它包含了一座 作为茶买卖与期货交易的茶交易研究中心、 一座商务酒店、三个综合商业建筑,以及两 个居住小区开发。整个项目可以视为一个独 立小城镇,却又融入整个城市肌理。 As the origin of “Poer Tea,” tea industry & business in Poer City has been flourishing for hundreds of years. This project is to trigger a development for the city to thrive this historic business. It constitutes a “Tea Trade Centre” for trading and stock exchange, a business hotel, three separate commercial complexes and two plots of residential areas. The whole project can be seen as an independent town but merging to the city context.

In this project, a few ideas are applied to approach this aim. Each of them delivers different levels of value. It consists of those qualities worth inherited from the past and expectable benefit for the future. The detail will be demonstrated in the following pages.

The tools used in teabrewing like tea cup & tea pot is transformed into a building clusters, accommodated with the function of storage, trading & stock exchange, etc. On the other hand, the form of business hotel simulates the ring shape of “Poer Tea Pie,” a kind of tea product.

This movement is to fill up the spatial gap between the centre and the city context;otherwise, it will become isolated from people’s life. Considering the region as a whole, we implant a few functions to the land, including commercial, residential, & condominium, etc. The effort is to increase land value for the region and deliver a more vibrant living interest.

在全球的低碳发展趋势下,绿色技术被广泛应 用在城市设计里。这是为了节约能源以及循环 使用资源,尤其是水资源。

这些措施能减少建筑的营运成本,甚至能为物 业持有者创造价值,假如建筑产生的能源充沛 到能被贩售。

因此,我们建议将感应式日光遮板、太阳能板以 及雨水回收设施应用在茶业交易中心与商务酒店 建筑上,期望为发者创造额外的未来价值。

In global tendency of low-carbon development, green technology is broadly adopted in urban design. It tries to save energy and reuse resource, especially water.

These measures may reduce the cost of maintenance, and even make profit for the building holder if the energy generated by the building is plentiful enough and sold for profit.

Te propose “Sunlight Blind Control,” “Solar Panel” and “Rain Recycling System” applied in the tea trade centre and business hotel, expecting to make extra value for the developer in the future.

VISIONING A PLACE WITH UNLIMITED POSSIBILITY

这是一个坐落于深圳市前海湾上的人造岛。它是一个 空旷且毫无活力的城市岛屿。所幸,这里未来的将会 迅速发展,意味著岛将被无数高楼包围,并面相市民 生活。抓住这个机会,我们构思了一个故事线来开发 这个场所,描绘著一个愿景-一个岛屿如何从无聊的 城市角落变成一个富有无限可能的城市空间。 The site is an artificial island located at Qianhai Bay in Shenzhen City. It is an empty urban island without vitality. Fortunately, the development around the island will grow rapidly, which means the island will be surrounded by numerous high-rising buildings and fronton citizen’s life in the future. Take advantage of this opportunity, we compose a story line to develop the place, illustrating a vision of the site from a boring city’s end to a vibrant urban space full of unlimited possibilities.

A NEW DESTINATION FOR EXERCISE

Location: QianhaiDist, Shenzhen City Site area: 1.4 ha

这个基地被切分成三个主要特色区,作为不同类型运 动的场所。这些分区包括极限公园、滑轮广场以及街 球场。这些区域被一个环绕全岛的大步行环线围绕, 沿途有许多节点与设施作为娱乐与休闲目的使用。未 来,每个年龄层的市民都能找到自己喜欢的场所进行 运动。 The site is divided into three primary feature zones for different types of exercise, including “Skate Park,” “Roller Skating Square,” and “Street Basketball Court.” They are connected by a big circle of walkway surrounding the whole island, with a couple of node and facility for leisure purposes. In the future, different age groups can suit in and choose their preferring space to do work-out.

EXTREME SPORT AS A TRIGGER FOR DEVELOPMENT

在深圳,极限运动玩家急遽增加;然而,这里却没有 适合的场地供他们活动。如前所述,我们规划了一个 极限公园,将该运动引入作为发展基地的契机。这是 因为群众的潜意识里往往会想好奇且想参与城市里其 他人的活动。极限运动的刺激姓氏个很好的媒介来集 聚人气。当群众聚集会衍生出一连串的城市行为,包 括伫留、聊天、观看甚至是买卖等等。这个地方可能 最后会变得受欢迎且成为城市的一个活力点。 In Shenzhen, the numbers of extreme sport player go up steeply;nonetheless, there is not an proper space for this. As mentioned, a “Skate Park” is planned to introduce this exercise to this space as a trigger to flourish the space. That is because the public is subconsciously curious of and want to involve with the others’ activities in the city. The excitement of extreme sports is a good catalyst to catch people’s attentions and gather the crowd. When people get together, a range of urban behaviours will be generated, including staying, chatting, seeing and trading, etc. The place may eventually be popular and become a vibrant part of the city.

MERGES INFRASTRUCTURE TO LANDSCAPE

假如一个城市空间变得热门,一些后续议题会接踵而 来,像是城市污水处理等等。因为它临海的位置让这 个议题在这基地显得更为明显。下雨时,所有的地 表雨污水与垃圾会被冲入海中。为了解决这个问题, 我们引进一些解决手段,包含雨水回收、透水铺装以 及生态过滤湿地等等。他们适当融入了岛上的景观当 中。 critical in the island than the other places because its location. Location: Sunning City, Sichuan Province Site area: 1.8 sq km

这个项目是景观城市主义在城市设计上的一次实践。 在这项目里,水系和城市绿带被视为城市基础建设的 一部份,而不仅仅只是不可企及的景致。当水网络渗 入城市的每个角落,船运变成公共交通的要角之一。 另一方面,城市绿带被完整连接成一个绿色网络,直 面所有建筑街廓的正面,变成供给社区活动的花园, 而不仅仅只是道路和街廓的隔离带。当水与绿面相公 众生活,这个城市将会变成一个建立在花园中且适合 人居的水城。 This project is a practice of landscape urbanism in urban design. In this project, water system and urban green are considered as part of infrastructure more than an inaccessible scene. Boating becomes an important part of public transportation when the water network spreads into every ends of the city. On the other hand, urban green is well connected into a green network toward the front side of every block. They are the urban garden for communal activities rather than a divider of road or blocks. A couple of activities are introduced to this area, consist of boating, skating, walking, cycling, river bathing and rock climbing, etc. The design of the venues for these purposes takes advantage of its spatial features, such as height different of embankment, wetland, canals and waterways, and so on.

FISH LADDER

There are a few water gates constructed with embankment. These facilities can be merely urban infrastructure defending flooding but potential venues for educational use. On north end of the area, a fish ladder and a Watergate control centre is suggested to be built with the Watergate and the canal lock. When fish jumps over the ladder, people can appreciate this interesting view from the watching window on the wall of the control centre’s basement. Simultaneously, an environmental-friendly idea can be delivered by such fascinating experience.
