HELLO, MY NAME IS SEAN WANG.
Hello! My name is Wang Shang-Yuan. I was born and raised in Taipei, and I have just completed my degree Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. I love sharing thoughts and communicating with different people. To me, the most exciting part of the design process is to generate ideas by discussing with teammates and various stakeholders. To me, what is design? I strongly believe that design is not only about problem-solving, but it must also create some value or social impact that can help shape the future lifestyle. In my latest projects, I have tried some topics with social concerns and focus on design research process for human-centered design. I always put a lot of effort into user research to discover not only pain points but also potential needs, and try to find out integrated solutions from various viewpoints.

This is an international multidisciplinary design project collaborated with two Korean students majoring in biomedical engineering and material engineering. In the 6-month design process, we have collaborated overseas and combined both of our specialties to create this innovative rehabilitation device. It is a device that integrates both software and hardware, bringing a brand new rehabilitation experience that eliminates the exhaustion and enhances the incentive to do rehabilitation.

Providing an optimised rehabilitation journey for stroke patients. The journey of rehabilitation is often long, slow and exhausting for patients, therapists and caretakers. It is always hard for patients to keep doing rehabilitation after a stroke although it is the only way for them to maximize their recovery. RE+ is an innovative hand rehabilitation device for stroke patients which applies the concept of gamification and group therapy to eliminate the exhaustion of the rehabilitation journey and enhance the incentive of rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation System RE+ is a two-fold design concept: a wearable hand movement sensor device and a game software that syncs to the device, which allows stroke patients to use the device to control the game. The games in the software are all designed for the specific movement for rehabilitation, guiding patients to conduct the rehabilitation exercise in a gamified method.

Releasing muscle tightness aftera stroke The wearable sensor device can sense the position and strength of patient’s hand by several sensors inserted inside the device under the silicone supporter. By conducting the hand movements guided by the game software, patients can train their muscles of fingers, carpal and arm, which helps them release the muscle tightness following a stroke. The soft silicone rubber supporter with an ergonomic shape makes it more comfortable for patients to use for a long time since a rehabilitation process might takes up to several hours.

software The RE+ system is accompanied by a collocated game software with a variety of games designed for the particular hand movement of stroke patients. We have selected several games that is fit for the hand rehabilitation and also easy to learned by elderly. The games includes drawing game, mirror game, tic tac toe, gomoku and denryu iraira bo, which are devided into different difficulty level. The creative or competitive game gives patients the empowerment of creativity and sense of accomplishment, improving the feedback of rehabilitation.

Personal record: log in by account The software requires patients to log into his/her own account before starting the game. The performance history can be recorded in the account of each patient, which is easier for therapists to measure the recovery level of each patient, and group patients with homogeneity to conduct the group therapy function, a function that will be introduced in the next page.

Group therapy: mutiplayer mode In physical therapy, the physiotherapist will select patients with homogeneity to do rehabilitation together, aiming to reach the social facilitation effect which can make patients perform better. Thus, the game software applies the group therapy concept, providing a multiplayer mode that allows several patients or even caretakers to join the rehabilitation together. For patients, the social facilitation effect would not only make the rehabilitation journey more interesting and interactive, but also stimulate their performance on rehabilitation. Moreover, when the caretakers also join the rehabilitation, it would increase caretakers’ engagement in the patients’ rehabilitation journey, which would also improve the relationship between them.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH STROKE - Brain hypoxia Stroke is a medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death. A common cause of stroke is a blood clot that forms in a brain blood vessel. A stroke causes damage to the brain, and the symptoms depend on the area of the brain affected. The more extensive the area of the brain affected, the more functions that are likely to be lost.

DEFINING PROBLEM “Why it is hard for stroke patients to keep doing rehabilitation?” Rehabilitaion is the most important part in the stroke treatment. It is almost the only way for patients to recover and maximize their quality of life after a stroke. However, many patients cannot keep doing rehabilitaion in the chronic period.
REASON 1: Diminishing utility of rehabilitation Most return of function is seen in the first few months, and then improvement falls off with the 6-month "golden window" considered officially by U.S. state rehabilitation units and others to be closed after six months, with little chance of further improvement.

GROUP THERAPY - Increasing interactivity by social facilitation In psychology, social facilitation can be defined as the tendency for people to perform better on simple or well-rehearsed tasks when in the presence of others than when alone. This effect is applied in physical therapy. The physiotherapist will select patients with homogeneity to do rehabilitation together. For each patient, the presence of other patients serves as a source of arousal, and heightened arousal increases the likelihood of the patients to do better on the tasks.

Natural disasters has been a nightmare for Taiwanese people for long. Through this project, my teammates and I tryed to find out a solution to decrease the impact or harm caused by natural disasters for Taiwan from different aspects. During the design process, we have put a lot of efforts to make the design more simple. We wanted to create a little simple change to existing products and enable them to exist normally but come in handy when natural disaster happens.

Providing a better environment inside evacuation shelters.
SHAIR is a stadium auditorium seat which can be transformed into a modularized living space for refugees when the stadium becomes an emergency shelter for disasters. It is composed of modular units and simple tenons that can be easily collapsed and assembled. SHAIR can create a private living space which provides refugees a higher living quality and larger personal space during the hard times inside the shelter.

Modularized components The chair is composed of modularized components: two connected pads fixed on the bleacher and a shell fixed on the pads. When the stadium becomes a shelter, the shell can be simply taken down from the pad, and it can have some assemble type with the latch on the pad.

Assembly There are special tenons, latches and jacks on the side of the pads and the shell. The tenons allow the shell to be fixed on the pads when the stadium is for normal use, and to be assembled with the pads after it is taken off from them when the stadium becomes a shelter. The several assembly types allow us to create a modularized living space for refugees.

Dismantling procedure: easy to conduct but not easy to discover We have designed a special dismantling procedure by the tenons, which is for staffs in the shelter, who know about the procedure, to take off the shell easily, but hard for normal people to find out the procedure. This is to prevent the shell from being easily taken off by crazy audiences when the stadium is as its normal use (having a ball game).

Match the hole on the side of the shell and the red latch on one of the pad, and it can be used as a cubicle wall for the refugees in order to separate their living space.
Clutch the trench on the shell to the edge of one of the pads and we can get a barrier above used as a visor for the bunk. What’s more, the flat area on top can be served as a table for dining or other uses.
And the bleacher will be transformed into modularized living spaces.

Modularized Living Space For Refugees A single bunk is constructed by 8 chairs in total, including 4 on the upper row and another 4 below. The cubicle walls can also be re-assembled and turn into simple tables. This makes the life in the shelter become more convenient and improves privacy for the refugees.

Easier To Set Up / Clean Up With SHAIR applicated in the stadium, it would be easier to set up for a shelter by simply transforming the auditorium seats into living spaces, instead of preparing great amount of material resources. After the emergency evacuation, the environment can be easily cleaned up by putting the seats back to their original position.

Better QoL Inside The Shelter The modularized living space created by SHAIR not only gives consideration to space, privacy and flexibility, but also protects refugees from moisture of concrete floor by the pads below since the weather in Taiwan is usually moist. It can create better QoL inside the shelter for the refugees.

More Efficient Space Usage If the resting area of refugees is moved onto the bleacher (auditorium seats area) from the ground, the space would become larger. Moreover, since the ground space is cleared, it can be used to store relief goods or be used as medical center, special care area, activity area, etc. In this situation, the staffs working on 1st floor would not disturb the refugees resting on 2nd floor (bleacher).

DESIGN BACKGROUND Taiwan: one of the most fragile country Under threat of multiple natural disasters, Taiwan has been appraised as top 10 most vulnerable country in the world by S&P. Once a natural disaster occurs in Taiwan, it will not only result in gigantic financial losses and human injuries, but also lead to great amount of victims being homeless. The victims must be evacuated from dangerous area, and then be assigned to shelters nearby.
Nightmare inside emergency shelters Shelters are overloaded due to great amount of people that flock into the spaces. The average living space per refugee will be gravely compressed. It ends up with refugees losing their most primary right of privacy. Under this extreme environment, the refugees could not get enough rest, and their stress will also increase by the time they’ve gone through in the shelter. On top of those, the process of setting up the shelter is pretty exhausting. It also consumes a lot of man power and material resources.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH Professional consultation: NCDR In order to get deeper understanding of the emergency evacuation system in Taiwan and know about problems that would happen inside emergency shelters, we have cunsulted with specialist Prof. Chuang Ming-Ren from National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR).
Insight: SOP varies from different disasters According to the emergency evacuation SOP in Taiwan, there are specific responses to different kinds of disasters. Typhoons or flood usually cause less refugees, and the evacuation duration is shorter. As a result, local hotels have the capacity to accept the refugees and there is no need to launch a shelter. However, earthquakes often cause more refugees, and the evacuation duration can usually be longer than two weeks. To settle the refugees and also take square footage and seismic coefficient into account, it would usually launch a shelter in local stadium.

DEFINING PROBLEM From the consultation, we realized that only when earthquake happens will it need to launch an emergency shelter in a stadium. To find out what problem would happen inside the shelter, we have make a journey map of emergency evacuation to search for pain points and design opportunity points.

In fact, the capacity of temporary sheltering in Taiwan does not meet the needs. If a great earthquake hits Taiwan, shelters will be overloaded and the space per refugee in the shelter will be against regulation. Under this orderless circumstances, refugees surely will gone through more stress and anxieties.
Despite the problems such as orderless and crowded space, another one is that refugees have no privacy in the shelter. Moreover, while the volunteers and staffs are walking around, they will also disturb the refugees. In this situation, refugees cannot get enough rest and will be totally stressed out.
Great amount of resources, such as bed frame, will be needed when a stadium is running as a shelter that can accommodate dozens of refugees. It may takes up to 24 hours to settle everything up. In this situation, refugees can not move into shelters immediately. It is also a big trouble to set up or clean up the shelter.

DESIGN GOAL According to previous studies, we can know that the biggest problems are: space insufficiency, privacy issue, and the trouble with setting up the shelter. That is when a thought came through our mind—what if we can come up with a solution to help speed up the process when opening a shelter, meanwhile make sure that each refugees can get enough living space, and improve quality of live and privacy at the same time?

IDEA:
WHY NOT MAKE USE OF BLEACHERS?
The bleacher (seating area) accounts for much space in the stadium. The sheltering capacity will be highly increased if we bring the space to use. As a result, we came up with an idea to move refugees from the floor onto the bleacher, and redesign the chairs on the bleachers that can be easily and quickly transformed into living spaces for refugees when the stadium becomes a shelter. With the wide area on the bleacher and great amount of seats, it can provide a lot of modularized living spaces for refugees. Also, the shape of the stairs may be used as barriers to block visual cues.
FIELD STUDY To ensure design feasibility, we did some research about the building act of stadiums, and went to some stadiums to conduct bodystorming. Based on our research, we found out that there are specific regulations about the spacification of bleachers or auditorium areas in a stadium. Therefore, we can make sure that our design on the stadium seats can reach to the expected functions under restrictions and can be compatible to different kind of stadiums.

This is a project applied lean product development (LPD) method to improve the customer satisfaction of a budget hair dryer product. Different from my other works, my teammate and I focused more on the R&D process and market evaluation in this project. In the research process, we have applied some knowledges about both engineering and management, and we have tried to think in a more pratical way to make this project closer to the real commercial world.

The purpose of product development is to design new products that improve the lives of customers. As a result, how to identify customer value precisely and create solutions in a short period development cycle is the main challenge for companies in a competitive market. Lean product development (LPD) is a pratical method for companies to face the challenge, helping them to satisfy their customer value, reduce development cost and shorten the development cycle time. It has been claimed to increase innovation ten-fold and increase introduction of new products 400%-500%

LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Lean product development (LPD) is a lean approach to meet the challenges of product development, aiming to reduce long development cycle times and costs. The concept of LPD was first developed by Toyota, which started its lean product development journey at Toyota Loom Works. Maximizing customer value is a core principle in LPD, but the value definitions used tend to be based on logical reasoning rather than real life observations. Feedback on the decision to design a certain feature will not be received until the product is in the hands of the customer. This means that decisions are made on short-cycle experimentation, prototyping, set-based design, and emergent practice. In this project, we have applied a LPD progress presented by Inagaki Kimio, a Japanese LPD leading expert, to develop a more efficient budget hair dryer.

FINDING TECHNICAL SOLUTION ANALOGICAL THINKING According to the opportunity value analysis, the point we need to improve first is the wind volume. As a result, we tried to use analogical thinking method to develop technical solutions. After we did some research in fluid mechanics and consulted with some expert for the airflow problem, we learned a simple effect that can influence the flow of fluid Coanda effect.
COANDA EFFECT The Coanda effect is the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface. As described by the eponymous Henri Coand in different patents: "the tendency of a jet of fluid emerging from an orifice to follow an adjacent flat or curved surface and to entrain fluid from the surroundings so that a region of lower pressure develops." The pressure effect, which is usually not indicated, is fundamental for the comprehension of the Coand effect. -Wikipedia The Coanda effect has many kinds of applications, and the most common one is the wing of aircraft that extra lift coefficient can be caused by the Coanda effect.

SHORT-CYCLE EXPERIMENTATION In LPD, a core principle is that decisions are always made on short-cycle experimentation, prototyping, set-based design, and emergent practice. It is to ensure that designers can verify their hypothesis before the product is in the hands of the customer. As a result, we have conducted a simple and low-cost experimentation to verify that Coanda surface can work on a hair dryer to enlarge wind volume.
TEST MATERIALS
COANDA SURFACE TEST As we have known that applying a Coanda surface to the wind outlet may suck the surrounding air to the flow and make the wind volume larger, we conducted an easy experiment to test if the idea can surely work and which kind of coanda surface we should apply.

Use a hair dryer applied with each simulated wind outlet (5 types: A-D and none) to dry a piece of tissue and calculate the time spent each time.

Pushing our product into market: LEC Global Summit 2018: Shanghai LEC Global Summit is a grand annual meeting of the lean enterprise community in China. The participants includes excecutives of some enterprises including WAHL, BOSCH, STIHL, Giant, etc. Through the recommendation of Mr. Inagaki Kimio, a Japanese LPD leading expert, My teammate and I brought our work to the LEC Global Summit in Shanghai with our professor to share our lean product developing process with the participants. Our project was used as a demonstration project in the summit and listed in the LEC yearbook 2018. Our hair dryer has found a business partner in the summit that it is currently in a mass production schedule by Keyarrow (Taiwan) Co., Ltd. and will soon be in the market.

Balance Acrylic light design
This is a lighting design concept proposed during my 2017 internship in Xcellent Design, Taipei. Xcellent Design is a Taipei-based lighting and furniture company. Acrylic light is the main product of Xcellent. The core technic of Xcellent is the triac dimming technology which can make light refract softly through the acrylic, creating a comfortable lighting atmosphere.

XCELLENT’S LIGHT GUIDE TECHNOLOGY The light guide technology is to apply the triac dimming technology to the acrylic light guide boards that refracts the light softly through the acrylic, creating a comfortable lighting atmosphere.
BENDABLE ACRYLIC BOARD This time, I tried to make use of the bendable characteristic of the acrylic light guide, making a silk-like lamp that intergrates with fluent shape.

INSPIRATION: BALANCE When the masses on the two sides of a balance are equal, they will achieve static equilibrium. At the same time, it gives a feeling of calm, harmony and relaxation. I want to apply the concept of a balance to create a lamp that can also achieve the feeling of static equilibrium by its special weight configuration.

VISUALIZING FLIGHT DELAY PROBLEM IN CHINA
“Is the distance between two cities really as we think?” If we consider the delay factor during the journey, the distance between two cities may become farther than expected. In fact, the flight on-time performance in China is relatively worse than in the world. The flight delay problem is even more serious in big airports including Beijing, Shanghai, etc. Take a flight from Beijing to Shanghai for example, the flight duration could usually be delayed to 3 or 4 hours although the estimated travelling time was only 2 hours. Since then, can we still say that the distance between Beijing to Shanghai is still only 2 hours long? This project is to visualize the flight delay problem in China. I have collected the on-time performance data of flights from Beijing to Shanghai within 1 week, and visualize the data on a graph to show the difference between ideal travelling time and the real situation. This project also provides some different kinds of data analysis including the relationship between the delay situation and airline or departure time, which can be a reference for traveler before planning a trip.

COLLECTING FLIGHT DATA I collected the flight data from flightradar24.com, an internet-based service showing real-time commercial flight information. I recorded information including STD, STA, ATD, ATA and airline for the 400+ flights from Beijing to Shanghai within 3/25~31 2018. After collecting the data, I used excel to convert the data into a form that can be read by my Processing code.
PROCESSING THE DATA I created a Processing program to process the data. The code can read the excel file and use the data in the file as parameters to draw a special graph.

PRESENTING THE DATA To present the delay time by distance? We know that the distance between Beijing and Shanghai is about 600 miles with a flight time of 2 hours. However, if a flight is delayed to 4 hours, can we say that it seems like the distance between the two cities has become twice since the flight has travelled twice the time?

I tried to present the delay time by the simulated distance travelled more caused by the delay, and draw the data of each flight into a bar. By the length of the bar that is out of the actual distance, we can know that how long the flight was delayed.

GRAPHIC OUTCOME I changed the arrage of time into a round shape that is easier for audiences to compare different time point in a day. The graphic shows the on-time performance in a day that it is an overlay of 7-day data. From the graphic , we can see that the on-time performance in the morning and afternnon is reletively good while the performance become worse in the evening and at night. As a result, the distance between Beijing and Shanghai seems to become longer in the evening and at night. For audiences to check out different layers of this graphic to see the relationship between on-time performance and different parameters including dates and airlines, I have created an interface for audiences to check out by different layers of this data graphic that would be introduced in the following pages.

ANIMATE THE DATA To let audiences know how the graphic outcome was generated by the data and the code, I created a special function that if we click the start button, it will start an animation showing the animated data that help explain how each flight data is drawn as a curved trajectory and what time point the points would change color.

INFORMATION REVEALING The interface also allows audiences to chenk the data by different parameters. Audiences can see the on-time performance on each day and the difference between airlines. It can be a reference for travelers before planning a trip.

What’s next? Although my definition of design is continuously changing, the one thing never changes is that I believe design must create some value and social impact to make a positive difference in the world. Although we have repeatedly taught that design is a kind of science and a logical reasoning process, I still believe that emotion is the key ingredient to build up connections between objects and people. In my future design projects, I will also focus on the research of people’s emotional feelings and intuition toward an object. In my senior year at NCKU, I joined my professor’s lab, which focuses on cognitive and Kansei (emotional) experience design. I am trying to discover design in a psychology viewpoint to see how people’s emotion works in the building up process of their cognition about objects, and implement the idea to create products that can truly touch people.
