Introduction The Spark Arts for Children have really enjoyed working with Medway Community Primary School and it is our great pleasure to present to you our My City publication. This is a collection of some of the poems that have been created by very talented children in your school. The children, who worked with Joseph Coelho, have explored the parks and playgrounds of Leicester, labeled trees with post-it note similes, found poems for the statues dotted around the city and discovered poems beating in their hearts. We have seen some fantastic, confident performances and read some creatively genius poems, all inspired by the children’s own experiences and all with Leicester at their heart. We hope you enjoy reading this collection of work. Why not write your own poem too‌.?

Flying on Wings Such wings, such wings where can they go, through the heavens and up above. Such wings, such wings, the sign of peace, through the clouds with such ease. Such wings, such wings, bring joy to us, through the skies like a flying bus. Such wings such wings, they’re much too calm, it’s written on your glowing palm. We know you’re right, you give no bite, you mean no harm, you’re such a charm. Adam Ismail
Important Rules In Leicester here are some rules for you and me, See how important they can be Always be honest be kind and fair, Always be good and willing to share. These are rules we should all know, We follow these rules wherever we go. Aysha Hasan

Is She a Clown? She jumped and skipped and started to dance Then she pretended she was flying to France She said she wants the paper with dots oops I am kind of a fuss pot She ate lots of bananas like a greedy monkey Then she kicked people like an angry donkey She stuck magnets to the kettle “I think that’s made of metal!” People tried to eat like her in cups She shouted “Oh just give up!” People said “You’re a baby!” She said “at least I’m not crazy!” She kept on slamming the door Her mum said, “Why can’t you sit on the floor?” She ran near a long black train She couldn’t think using her brain She said we have to get out of this town I think I’m turning into a clown! What a Journey My beautiful house protecting me while shops annoyingly scream. Lollipop lady screaming, “have a lolly for free”. Trees tumbling while leaves are rustling. My journey nice and clean. Peacefully hearing the mosque praying delightfully. Red light beeping like a morse code! The laughter of children playing in the adventure park. But in the distance the painful dog making people deaf like a machine. What a journey I had and that’s the end of my day, I must say! Iqra Parveen

I love my Leicester Leicester, Leicester I love my Leicester. It is an exciting place to be. With the beautiful plants and the marvellous trees, how could I ever leave. A friendly place and a happy place I would love to be. With gorgeous houses and exotic gardens. I live in Leicester and it’s great. I don’t want to leave because this is where I’m meant to be. So how could I ever leave! Radiyah Khanom

A Seamstress A seamstress who is always pricking her fingers. A seamstress who works day and night. A seamstress who looks very helpful. A seamstress who wears a scarf on her shoulders everyday. A seamstress sewing socks all day. A seamstress who is always busy A seamstress who wears a maid hat. A seamstress who wears slippery shoes. A seamstress who is always stressed. A seamstress who always gets tired. Samiha Pathan

If all of Leicester If all of Leicester was candy the clock tower would be made out of lollypop sticks. If all of Leicester was candy the rainbows would be made out of skittles. If all of Leicester was candy all houses would be made of ginger bread houses. If clouds were in the sky the candy floss would be floating! Fateha Begum
King Richard III King Richard III was a king who wore a lot of bling, but he was not a good one as he never won a single battle he locked his nephews in the Tower of London and he is not a good warrior His army ditched him and he got obliterated in battle. Alex Mocas

Mysteries of Mercury The angel, oh angel, how your mighty wings soar, how your voice is so calm and it never does roar, The olive branch you hold so tight, it brings us ease, It’s a symbol of peace. From what I know you’re high above, but you still fly round us just like a dove. Your soul we know is always here, You never have brought to us a single tear. You bring us joy, we know your power is not a toy. WE SHALL NEVER TAKE YOU FOR GRANTED! No matter what!
Aaliyah Khaled

A house with people on the top A house with people on the top making noise as loud as a ferocious elephant. Graffitied walls dripping on the floor as if it was blood, a loud cat which lives underneath a car. Shops full of food, making the road smell fishy. A petrol station which leaves petrol on the floor, with black ink. A church which makes tick-tock noises as loud as a trumpet. A broken car which will never get fixed! A school which I learn poems in. Asha Cameron

Leicester, Leicester Leicester, Leicester a place full of danger, Just down the road people drinking and getting weird Leicester, Leicester a place full of weirdos, people who listen to music and dance on the roads Whilst car’s horns beep. Fun people dancing around like dogs in circles to catch there tails people in the pubs going mad and doing weird stuff. Asif Hanan

In Leicester In Leicester there are Lollipops as trees, rivers as chocolate milk, houses made out of gingerbread and trees as brown as chocolate. In Leicester there is, concrete made out of liquorish, a fountain spilling out cola and sweet wrappers used as decorations. In Leicester there are hail storms as sugar cubes, rain as sprinkles and rainbows as skittles, (taste the rainbow). In Leicester there is a statue of Thomas Cook made out of hard chocolate, the clock tower made out of caramel and clothing made out of toffee. In Leicester there is one home, a normal home, a home made out of bricks, it’s all in your imagination. Aleeah Begum

Love Your Leicester Oh historical witty city We have no pity For what we have learnt about our city like… King Richard III And mysteries The amazing Curve And tragedies Multi cultural festivities And a whopping amount of factories We welcome you to this stunning place It’ll bring a smile to your face It’s just round the corner Not far away If you run a bit faster You’ll reach the brilliant city of LEICESTER Hafizah Satia

The wolf that lived in the mysterious forests of Leicester The wolf that lived in the mysterious forests of Leicester had a wife and children, they came outside one night and saw the empty roads in Leicester. A car came past and they hid in the shade. They were getting terrified so they broke the shop on East Park Road. They ran and ran when they reached a park opposite my house and they broke the gates. Haafizah Mansur

Friends When I started school I was all alone Your heart feels warm and then it glows But when I met a friend like you You encouraged me a lot I wish everyone had a friend like you who is always by my side a friend who’ll always support me every time and everyday. I can always trust my friend a friend that can help you more. Thank you for being my friend!

Tryophobia This child has tryophobia no matter where he goes, Even when he has to touch a gate ICE cold, When he has to try to write a play, Or try to bake a cake, This is the most weirdest phobia of all. He’s even scared to try to kick a football. When he has seen boulders Or people fall over, Scared to try to watch TV, Even when he has to try to say “please”, This kid has tryophobia as he has to go to the park and play, Even when he has to say “hey”, When he has tryophobia he has to try and act strong But gets scared when he tries to play ping pong! Tryophobia! Reefat Aziz

Friends Friends oh friends what can I do without friends. If I fall down they will appear like thunder they will ask and say “Are you OK what can I help you with today” I will reply and say may I please have ice cream. Friends will reply carefully OK is that all for today. I will say yes madam friends. Once they have gone to get me ice cream I will often do a party I quickly go and bake a cake for friends. I pour the dusty flour in the bowl 20 minutes later friends come back I gave her cake and they give me ice cream. I say be gone for today. Manal Muhammed
What’s Out A old house which inside is a modern house. A house that people said that, it used to belong to ghosts. A broken down Audi left on its own for 3 months The oldest school which fought in the wars. Almas Ilyas

Leicester Poem If all Leicester was candy, the river Soar would be made out of chocolate. If all Leicester was candy, you would walk to school with gum shoes. If all Leicester was candy the Lord Mayor would have to call the dentist to check children. If all Leicester was made out of candy, the clock tower would be made out of gummy worms. If all Leicester was made out of candy, you wouldn’t be eating Walker’s crisps you would be having ice cream cones in crisp bags. If all Leicester was candy, lolly sticks would be all over the floor. But we have to remember that this is not true. As Leicester is already great to live in. Aniyah Miah

The flying fairy She fly’s to help others all day long. Have we ever thought when we’ll be gone. We play all day and never think how does she manage this? Did she go up to the sky and with her friends make apple pie? Nor people would say she’d rest her mighty sword and say Peace upon everyone! In distress she’d barely rest, unhappily all day trying to be ok. Her wings would fly shimmer and shine! Now she dread in sorrow time to say goodbye! Sabia Khanom
She did not know She did not know that the ground was as scaly as a snakes back. She did not know that the chains were as cold as ice. She did not know that the wind looks like it’s snowing. She did not know that the pole is as smooth as a fish. Aneta Gaborova

The things that people say The things that people say is, Alina, which is me, is as creative as an artist, The tree is as tall as a tower, Bin as smelly as dogs poo, Handle of ladder as red as blood, Bench that has an orange texture like gold, The ground as wet as a gigantic waterfall, Tyres as bouncy as jelly, clouds as soft as candy floss, snow as sprinkly as sugar, Town as huge as a kingdom, And those were the things that people say. Alina Khan

King of England Richard the III, Richard the III, as brave as a lion, his sword made of iron, A knight who was ready to fight, Settled himself for the battle, He was pretty strong, but sometimes he went wrong, sadly he did not live long, He had a golden crown which did not let him down, Richard died and his family members cried. Zayan Motegeria

If Leicester had Star Wars If Leicester had Star Wars, the Lord Mayor would be Darth Vader. If Leicester had Star Wars, Thomas Cook would be Luke Skywalker. If Leicester had Star Wars, Bosworth Battlefield would be filled with storm troopers and clone troopers. If Leicester had Star Wars, the noble M600 would be the TIE fighters and X-wing fighters. Muhammad Patel
Richard Richard Richard Richard why did you die like a piece of pie Richard Richard I thought you were brave but you fell off your horse like a wave Richard Richard why did you lock your nephews in the tower Just because of you they vanished like a flower Saajid Ahmed 24

If Leicester was made of chocolate If Leicester was made out of chocolate Richard III would be buried in Easter eggs, If Leicester was made out of chocolate Everyone would eat chocolate flavour crisps, If Leicester was made out of chocolate The Leicester Cathedral would be made out of toffee, If Leicester was made out of chocolate Clock tower would be made out of caramel, If Leicester was made out of chocolate I would gobble her up, But Leicester isn’t made out of chocolate, But it would be cool if it was.
