Welcome A warm welcome to The Spark Festival 2015, our thirteenth year of bringing some of the world’s best artists and companies to Leicester to inspire and entertain you over thirteen fabulous days.
This year we are particularly excited to welcome back Arun Ghosh launching our very own Young People’s Jazz Club at The Cookie. Curve will host the gorgeous English National Ballet’s Swan Lake as well as international dance theatre from Nevski Prospekt, Hop. At Attenborough Arts Centre (formerly Embrace Arts) we have the superb Spitalfields Music’s Musical Rumpus and there is incredible Water Light Graffiti by French digital artist Antonin Fourneau at Phoenix.
In and around the festival there are workshops to get involved with and free activity for the whole family. This year’s all new City Play-ground will see Attenborough Arts Centre turn their venue into an Enchanted Forest, Curve will be hosting a Family Day, Digital Delights return to Phoenix, and the LCB Depot (home to the festival office) will bring the City Play-ground to a close with Show Off! - an opportunity to experiment, invent and show off your festival creations.
We hope you come and join us to see, hear, do and show off all your talents. It’s festival time!
Adel Al-Salloum, Director

Digital Sparks Tuesday 26 - Friday 29 May 11am - 5pm
Immerse yourself in amazing interactive experiences at Phoenix for The Spark Festival 2015. We have a host of activities for all ages, from family films to short workshops, giving children the chance to engage, learn, play and create with some of the latest – and coolest! – digital technology around.
Water Light Graffiti
Antonin Fourneau, French digital artist extraordinaire, brings his unique interactive artwork Water Light Graffiti to Phoenix and invites you to create your own original ‘light art’.
Antonin has developed a remarkable smart surface from thousands of tiny lights that illuminate on contact with water, so you can draw in light simply using a wet paintbrush, water spray, or even your finger... and the wetter it is, the brighter the image.
Write, draw or just go for an abstract splash that looks like fireworks - Water Light Graffiti enables anyone to create magical, ephemeral lightworks, whatever their age.
There’ll also be lots of fun free activities taking place around Phoenix to fire up the imagination – see the venue brochure and website for further details. Water Light Graffiti is a creation by Antonin Fourneau, produced by Art2M.

Schools Programme Monday 18 - Friday 22 May
The Spark Festival’s At Your School programme remains at the heart of the festival. We bring performances and workshops into Leicester schools and offer special theatre shows for school audiences at Curve & Attenborough Arts Centre (see pages 8 & 9).
As well as being enormously entertaining and inspiring, these performances are a powerful teaching tool, stimulating a wealth of classroom activity across Pre-school, Key Stages 1, 2 and 3. Productions are supported by resources for teachers and some offer practical workshops, led by the performers themselves.
Arts Award
The Spark Festival offers a fantastic opportunity for children and young people to explore the richness and diversity of art and culture. It is an easy way for schools to kick start their engagement with two Arts Award qualifications – Discover and Explore.
The Spark Arts for Children has trained Arts Award Advisers, who can help Leicestershire schools develop fun and flexible programmes for youngsters. Contact us on 0116 261 6893 for more information about Arts Award and how your school could benefit. Our partners at Attenborough Arts Centre are also offering discounted tickets for young people to see performances. Please contact arts-education@le.ac.uk to find out more.

Catapluf's Musical Journey
Into The Rainbow
For Key Stage 1 & 2
Come and join our two excavators as they scuttle through the muck, finding treasures hidden amongst a world of rubbish. This beautiful, silly and inventive world will engage youngsters with themes of recycling and the environment, whilst introducing them to some amazing puppetry.
Created by award-winning company Theatre-Rites, Recycled Rubbish was inspired by the hugely successful show Rubbish, which toured the UK in 2014 and appeared at last year’s Spark Festival.
“It is precious, and profound, and playfully inspiring”
Total Theatre
For Key Stage 1 & 2
Meet Catapluf, a character fascinated by sounds. His imagination travels to places where everything makes music: saucepans, water, drums and even the body!
Created by percussionist and composer Adriano Adewale, this show is full of music from every corner of the globe and packed with ideas that will fuel some great classroom discussions.
“Captivated by the array of instruments and sounds, within minutes the children were involved; moving and responding to what they could see and hear” Sophie McLoughlin, Music Teacher, Latchmere Primary School

During the workshop session participants will get the opportunity to take part in creative dance, movement and music activities exploring the theme of a magical world inside a rainbow. This will include making rainbows and exploring characters that live inside the rainbow. There will also be an opportunity during the workshop for the participants to watch sections from the show performed by some of the cast members.
