Kota Bharu International Airport

Kota Bharu, Malaysia

Terminal Extension Design

Project Data Year of Operation: 2019 - 2032

APROXIMATE BUILT UP AREA: 78214 m2 Concept Design: Kelantan is a state rich in native cultural traditions such as flying the moon shaped “wau”kites, wayang kulit, intricate silk weaving of the songket and the thematic flower of the awan larat, tampuk manggis. The interior design approach of this terminal can be best summarised as a fusion of contemporary terminal spatial, functional and circulation clarity, and Kelantan’s cultural influences that mark the terminal as belonging to this state. The terminal interiors must first and foremost read as a transport terminal whilst having the cultural and religious nuances layered on top.

VVIP Building Design

Project Data Year of Operation: 2019 - 2032

APROXIMATE BUILT UP AREA: 1348 m2 Concept Design: The VIP building is a microcosm of the main terminal focussing on a passenger segment accorded the status to board the aircraft from this terminal. In its architecture, the stand-alone building retains the pseudoMiddle Eastern architecture of arches and geometrical decorations and is linked at first floor level via a bridge to the main terminal. In designing the interior, we have taken the outside in by employing similar features. The triple arch that is prevalent in Moorish architecture is used to enhance the VIP and VVIP rooms. Geometrical screens and Kelantan motifs are employed to complete the theme of place and belonging. The VIP and VVIP rooms share a common theme of finding the balance between modernity and tradition.

VVIP BUILDING GROUND FLOOR PLAN

Our designs incorporate Moorish Islamic motifs as well as the use of local teak wood veneers and flooring to enrich the interiors. Carpets are used in each major space to give warmth and individuality and to impart a sense of wellness to its VVIP guests.

Surgut International Airport Surgut, Russia

Concept Design for Terminal Competition

Project Data

APROXIMATE BUILT UP AREA: 29443 m2 Concept Design: Surgut is a city located in the oil rich oblast of Khanti-Manty Autonomous Okrug of Russia with a population of 348,643 (2016). The concept design of this competition called for a terminal of approximately 29,400m2 with a domestic peak hour of 1290 and an international peak hour 360. The distinctive double curved roof is the result of creating two high ceilinged spaces over the international and departure lounges. The low point of the main roof is then tilted back towards landside to enable melting snow and rain to be channelled away from the terminal footprint. A spine roof picks up passengers from the carpark and provides a “kiss and fly drop off solution in addition to the regular curbside. Design emphasis is placed on the airside and landside facades.

Montijo International Airport

Montijo, Portugal

Concept Design

Project Data Year of Operation: 2019 - 2032 Capacity: 10.7 mppa

APROXIMATE BUILT UP AREA: 76000 m2 Concept Design: The combined architecture of solids and voids, of terminal and plaza is intended to create more than a transient space. Deep in the psyche of the passenger comes a recognition of the form as a part of their Portuguese culture. The big open plaza where people congregate will become a landmark and a meeting point for its people in much the same way as Munich’s open umbrella between the two terminals. The triangular shape and the gentle curves reminds us of the front of the Portuguese Caravels. The greenery, blue open sky and water views will always be present in the passenger’s line of sight, offering an everlasting ‘Portugal Experience’ to the very last minute in Montijo Airport. PROPOSED TERMINAL BUILT UP AREA: 62450 m2 (all 3 stages) TERMINAL PHASE 1 BUILT UP AREA: 2800 m2 Client OJSC Koltsovo Airport Completion of Design January 2013 Concept Design: Merging with the landscape is an important theme in our quest for a beautiful facade. We have introdu`ced a plaza, a beautifully clean and avant-garde groundscape that will transform the area to the right of the site. By slicing the site in front with an angled low wall (which screens the carpark), we define a triangular piece of land that will become the urban architecture of the airport. The angled grass and walkways now point us physically and visually to the landside facade.

DAY VIEW OF LANDSIDE FACADE

In this dramatic plaza is cut into its surface a long water feature that drives deep to the terminal facade. This water feature greets the passenger upon arrival and is the focal point when one is in the arrivals cafe.

The brief for this masterplan called for 2 further phases, with each phase approximately the same size as the first , in addition to commercial development and parking. In Phase 2 and 3, the 30m deep landside plaza, complete with landscaping and inground lighting are united into a lond drop off curb leading directly to the hotel and conference buildings. An alternative means of access and egress was proposed on the left giving separate access to this complex and the office tower in front. Passengers and staff working in the commercial buildings can walk under cover in winter to all areas including the terminal. Design Completed in 2013 The Tropical Architecture of the Pier Large overlapping planes highlight the tropical architecture of the terminal and its parts. There is consistency in the treatment of the secondary passenger pier in that shading is taken very seriously. As in the main terminal a deep roof overhang (6m) protects the glazed facades from direct radiation and rain. The glazed walls of the pier are louvered by deep aluminium clad transoms cutting off sunlight at lower angles. This passive approach to energy use dictates that most of the vertical surfaces shall be shaded under the big roof.

Project Data TERMINAL BUILT UP AREA: 30165 m2 Client OJSC Koltsovo Airport Completion of Design May 2013 Project Description: Our inspiration for Perm is in the use of wood, for which the region of Perm is famous for. Wood strucures have been used in many terminals in the world. There is a great deal of know-how and technology in relation to the use of wood cladding and wood structures. We intend to create such a structure that will showcase the modern use of timber technology in a public building in Russia.

Guggenheium Helsinki Helsinki Waterfront, Finland

Design Completed: 2014 Competition Year: September 2014 Project Description: A single pieve of an artisan’s wood shaving so thin that the beauty of its grain can be seen through light is our source of inspiration. We marvel at the way it curls, unwittingly trapping space, balancing on its own mass to weight ratio. Showing the same warmth and grai on both sides, the wonder of the wood shaving is morphed into a form encompassing the site. Starting at one end, it flows as walls enclosing space, trees, splits into layers to create canopies cascades along the waterfront, wraps around public spaces, loops over to form the galleries before spiraling down to from the multi-purpose hall. The birch forest that we propose is to show where wood is from, how it is cultivated, how it grows and matures into trees. Eventually, how it supports wildfire and how it enters the material world.

Art Museum Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Project Description

Located at the end of a park, the site is sandwiched between Jalan Kia Peng and Jalan Conlay. The three wings of the museum encompassed a vibrant plaza of reflecting pools, water features, urban sculptures and dazzling lighti through the “petals of the buildings. Two main wings are enveloped by white translucent PTFE membranes onto which will be projected imagery and data on the exhibitions. The space between the petal membranes will enclose museum ciculation whilst lighting of the petals at night will transform the buildings into pieces of art. The third building is conceived as a clear picture frame reflecting the landscape of the part and the ever changing sky onto its mirror glass facade.

Project Concept We conceived this art museum, the first of its kind in Malaysia, as a new spring bud growing out of a sea of green after a day of rain. The commercial driving force was to create a world class iconic landmark that would place Malaysia on the art world, making it a metting place for social interaction, fine dinning, art appreciation and art education. A global tourist destination - this was the Brief. Our work included researching and visiting the museums of New York. But finally, inspiration came from the petals of a new flower that curl to protect, its precious pollen! We conceived this art museum, the first of its kind in Malaysia, as a new spring bud growing out of a sea of green after a day of rain. The commercial driving force was to create a world class iconic landmark that would place Malaysia on the art world, making it a meeting place for social interaction, fine dinning, art appreciation and art education.

Eco World Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Design Concept for an Ecologically Sustainable Office and Project Showroom Water, creating life and urbanization. By way of a waterfall, water is expressed as a very important feature on the building. A waterfall is an instantly recognizable feature with great feng-shui benefits. It is an auspicious symbol of wealth and good life. In this refinement, we have removed the river that flowed through the centre of the Galleria. The river has been replaced with an informal landscapeof shallow edgeless reflective pools that are connected to the waterfalls as an integrated and active cooling system. Some pools will have Koi fish and water hycinths and lillies, others simply reflective pools that can absorb ambient heat and give an impression of coolness. Combined with lush tropical planting, the interior of the galeria becomes space where Air Condicioning may become unnecessary.

Corpotate Offices Port of Tanjung Pelepas,

Malaysia Project Description

In this project we chose to express forms, textures and technology to create an ambience that would remind us of the nautical world, past and present. The colour schemes used were derived from those found at the edges of the seas: sand, turquoise waves, sea creatures, white sails and the motion of birds. The port of Tanjung Pelepas, is arguably the most innovative and baroque. Making metal move was an objective per say, yet it was achieved through precise detailing of the metal components in the many components in the many elements of this substancial corporate interior. Each major space was given a strong theme and its function was expressed in a shipping vernacular, familiar to those in the industry. The extensive use of timber reflects the interiors of ocean - going of a bygone era.`
