Welcome

Focus is the highlight of our year. It is an opportunity to holiday with our church family and enjoy a week together with old friends and new. This year we will be returning to Somerley Estate in the New Forest, which was such a huge success in 2016.

We are thrilled to have an extraordinary group of speakers with us this year. The programme has plenty for everyone, with inspiring celebrations in the Big Top, Tent Talks, prayer and worship. There are groups for children, youth and students, sporting activities and plenty of local amenities for all the family, including beautiful beaches just a short drive away. Take a look through this guide to ensure you take advantage of everything on offer during the week. We hope you have a wonderful time! With love,

Camping for Newbies

CHOOSE THE PERFECT TENT A tent with a spare compartment is the easiest way to keep things organised; your sleeping space stays clean and dry and you have an area to store shoes and any other bits and bobs you bring. Pitch your tent at home before you head to Focus. Check you have all the parts and there are no holes or problems.

PACK SMART Put the things you’ll need first when you get to Focus in your car last. Put your tent in last so you can take it out first, pitch it and leave everything safely in your car until it’s up. Pack your stove and teabags last so you can enjoy a nice cuppa while setting up camp. Store things in plastic boxes with lids to keep everything dry. Spare tent pegs, guy ropes, tent poles and duct tape are all very useful things to pack. Always check you have gas in your stove or gas canister before heading off. Our on-site Camp Shop will sell equipment, including gas canisters, if you run out during the week. Pack clothes for every season. As we all know, weather can change very quickly in the UK.

Layers keep you covered for hot and cold weather, and flip-flops and wellies are always useful. Bring more than one pair of jeans, we all know how long they can take to dry if they get wet. Bring a cool box with ice blocks for food and drink. There will also be an ice block exchange in our onsite Camp Shop. It gets cold at night. If you are sleeping on an airbed, make sure you have something underneath it (roll mats or even cardboard). This will help to stop the cold ground cooling the air in your airbed. Thick socks are also brilliant to help stay warm during the night. Earplugs and eye mask! If you are a light sleeper this could save your week.

Tent Tips Bring a hot water bottle and thick bed socks to keep extra warm at night.

Bring a head torch to help pitch your tent in the dark. Tent locks suggest there are valuables inside. Instead, keep your valuables with you or leave them at home.

If it rains, try not to touch the side of your tent as this can cause leaks.

Night time can be colder than you think. Pack an extra blanket, just in case.

Bring bunting or something to help you find your tent easily.

Make friends with your neighbours – helpful when you need to borrow milk or sugar for your cup of tea.

Somerley is a beautiful site. We ask you to respect your surroundings and help us to leave it in the best state possible.

Tent Talks RELATIONSHIPS THE POWER OF BELONGING IN MARRIAGE Wednesday + Thursday Focus Kids Village, Red Tent Hosted by Revd Nicky + Sila Lee THE POWER OF BELONGING IN MARRIAGE: PART 1

THE POWER OF BELONGING IN MARRIAGE: PART 2

Revd Nicky and Sila Lee Wednesday 4.00pm – 5.00pm

Revd Nicky and Sila Lee with Steve and Mandy Marshall-Taylor Thursday 4.00pm – 5.00pm

Creating a sense of belonging to each other within marriage is essential for a strong and lasting relationship. ‘Belonging’ nurtures a sense of safety and emotional connection and enables us to withstand the inevitable pressures we will face at different stages, whether with children, teenagers, health, money, retirement and so on. Knowing we belong in our marriage helps us to change and adapt to the different seasons and stages of married life. Whatever stage you are at, come and invest and consider how you might increase your sense of belonging.

How do we overcome the challenges we face? What causes us to react inappropriately and unhelpfully to each other? How do we move towards each other rather than away from each other at critical moments? Nicky and Sila and Steve and Mandy will be looking at the pressures that cause us to disconnect and offering practical help in working through them together, and in the process strengthening our marriages and sense of belonging to each other.

Getting ready to date positively, is about developing an awareness of your real intentions and ambitions and an ability to express who you really are to another person. This tent talk helps you to ask the questions (and offer some answers) that will have the biggest impact on you both being and finding a successful date.

We are called to be people of peace, but what does this look like in a world of violence? Stephen will explore the theology and practices of peacemakers.

Zoe and Andy Clark-Coates Thursday 2.30pm – 3.30pm

Will Van Der Hart Friday 2.30pm – 3.30pm

Zoe & Andy will be sharing their story of loss and how they turned their pain into purpose. They will give practical advice on how to embrace and process grief and loss whether that be for you personally or for you to help and support friends or congregations. Zoe will also interview the actress Sally Phillips about how she journeyed through loss.

We all long for belonging and yes so many of us struggle with feelings of fraudulence and exclusion. Even within the church we can feel that we perpetually don’t match up. This tent talk tracks the story of shame in the life of Moses and offers a biblical and psychological model of how we can let go of shame and enjoy the true belonging that is ours in Jesus.

Arianna and the team at Mercy UK have been working at the forefront of freedom ministry for over 10 years, seeing incredible results in their residential homes and increasingly in partnership with local churches. Find the keys to freedom and enjoy a great Q&A around emotional freedom and faith in Jesus. Interview with Arianna Walker, followed by panel interview with Arianna, Sam Coates, Rachel Hughes and Louie Van Der Hart.

Prepare for a stress tent talk with a difference.

Tent Talks LEADERSHIP COLLEGE LONDON Wednesday – Friday and Sunday Focus Kids Village, Blue Tent Hosted by Pete Wynter

LIVING DIFFERENTLY IN A WORLD RULED BY CONSUMERISM Jo Herbert Wednesday 2.30pm – 3.30pm ‘I shop therefore I am' is the philosophy of our day. God made us to consume, but in proportion. Over-consumption threatens our own spirituality, the environment and the world's poor. How can we lead differently? We'll practically and theologically explore how we can live differently, thinking about circular economy, zero waste, what Scripture says and more.

CREATIVE COMMUNICATION Stewart Bewley Thursday 2.30pm – 3.30pm Stories change the world. Jesus was an amazing storyteller and if we are his followers shouldn't we have a go at telling stories too? Our stories carry the potential for change in our every day lives. This practical workshop will equip you to communicate with impact and confidence, whether you are chatting to your neighbour over the fence or to hundreds from a stage.

GIVING THANKS: THE MIRACULOUS POWER OF GRATITUDE TO TRANSFORM THE WORKPLACE Roger Bretherton Friday 2.30pm – 3.30pm Psychologist, Dr Roger Bretherton, draws on biblical principles and psychological science to examine the simple power of gratitude and appreciation in the workplace. Being grateful for those we work with is an essential element of leadership that makes a difference. The number one reason people give for leaving their job is that they feel under-appreciated. This tent talk presents deep theology and practical guidance on how to use the attitude and behaviours of thankfulness to bring the grace of God to bear on any work situation.

HOW’S YOUR RESILIENCE CUSHION? Steve Burston Sunday 2.30pm – 3.30pm How do we bounce back up when the pressures of work and life push us down? An increasingly important aspect of our character into today’s world is our resilience. What happens in our mind, body and spirit when things go wrong?

Revd Paul Cowley MBE Wednesday 2.30pm – 3.30pm Focus Kids Village, Red Tent Social transformation is God’s love in action, changing the lives of the least, the lost and the lonely. We will be exploring prison theology and our God who was behind bars, and the team will offer practical steps to serve ex-offenders, the homeless and those in debt in your

THURSDAY CHANGING THE NARRATIVE OF OUR TIME

ARISE: RAISING A GENERATION OF FEMALE CHURCH LEADERS

Ken Costa Thursday 2.30pm – 3.30pm Focus Kids Village, Red Tent

Sarah McDonald Thursday 4.00pm – 5.00pm Functions

We live in a VUCA world: volatile, uncertain, complex and angry. That’s the narrative of our time. Can it be changed? Can we reshape our cultural narrative and restore hope at every level of our society or are we just passive observers in the cultural narrative; powerless on-lookers of a VUCA world. Our core story is hope. Resurrection hope. Ken Costa looks at how we can shape the story of our time listening to the longings of a generation ready to stand up, influence and shape our communities, churches, cities, and country.

What is God’s call to the women of this nation? What does it look like to be an ordained female leader? Is it possible to find a clerical shirt that doesn’t look like you are wearing a sack with a bib? Join Sarah (and friends) to explore the pioneering, exciting ways that women are leading within the church. Whether you're exploring a call to ordained ministry or passionate about raising up female leaders this is a great chance to hear testimonies, ask questions and explore further God's heart for women.

Unmissable One-Offs FRIDAY THIS IS US: THE STORY OF GAS STREET

COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP: THE POWER OF A UNITED VOICE

Tim and Rachel Hughes Friday 2.30pm – 3.30pm Focus Kids Village, Red Tent

Georgi Sheaf and Shelley Hartland Friday 4.00pm – 5.00pm Focus Kids Village, Red Tent

Come and join Tim and Rachel Hughes and their team as they share lessons from the story of Gas Street so far. Through interviews with Tim and Rachel and the team this will have a touch of the Piers Morgan no stone unturned grilling! What’s it like communicating and executing vision, over-seeing a building project, raising up leaders, discipling a growing community, building teams & structures; whilst leading together, prioritising family life, maintaining spiritual fervour and staying sane!

Collaborative leadership has been called a feminine superpower. While both men and women can possess a collaborative leadership style, research shows it is more intuitive for women. As millennial leaders increasingly seek to work in a collaborative environment, is the call to lead in this way becoming imperative regardless of gender? Join the WLN Team and guests as we explore how both men and women can harness the power of collaboration and lead this generation with greater effectiveness.

In this session, Arianna Walker explores the relationship between the lavish overflow of the ocean of God's grace, and our inclination to approach it with a teaspoon.

Compassion Café Tuesday – Saturday 7.30am – 6.30pm Thursday After Hours: 9.00pm – 10.30pm The Compassion Café and Soft Play is back at Focus for 2017. Poverty stops millions of children from going to school. Going to school to learn how to read and write is the start of being able to break free from poverty. Education, like food, water and healthcare, is a basic right that many children in poverty can’t access. Compassion is all about the ONE CHILD. We place huge value on children and their potential and within our programmes, each child is known, loved and protected. We place this same value on your children and hope this space serves you and your family during your time at Focus.

Soft Play Our soft play zone is a bright, safe place for your kids to run wild and make some memories of their own, whilst you sit back in the café and catch your breath. We have everything you need – reading zones, a baby changing area, toys galore and even a dressing-up box!

Refuel Take a moment. Choose from our selection of freshly ground Fairtrade coffee and our range of Fairtrade teas, you can even treat the little ones to a hot chocolate mountain with all the extras! A number of fresh treats will be available for the whole family to enjoy throughout the day; from fresh pastries and scones, to amazing cakes. Make a lunch pit stop and choose from an array fresh sandwiches and salads.

Live Stream Morning Celebrations from the Big Top will be shown on our screens, so you won’t miss a thing!

Everyone Loves to Chat & Hear Stories Why not join us over the course of the week for some special Tent Talks and interviews. Come and hang out with us as we chat with Alpha Global Vice-President, Bonnie Yule-Kuehne. Join us for a practical Tent Talk that will unpack why church leaders should make God’s heart for justice central to their strategy for growth, discipleship and teaching, led by Stuart Keir of Audacious Church, Manchester. As well as that, hear from one of our Formerly Sponsored Compassion Graduates sharing about their experience of poverty and how sponsorship changed their life. Or, join us after the Big Top Celebration for a hot chocolate

mountain and an evening of acoustic entertainment with one of our Compassion Ambassadors. Check the Compassion Café schedule for more information.

Get involved Whilst you’re enjoying your coffee and treats, why not chat to the team about Compassion’s work and see how you and your family can change the life for ONE CHILD.

Bookshop Tuesday – Sunday 8.00am – 5.00pm and 7.00pm – 11.00pm St Andrew’s Bookshop have been serving the local church, as well as at conferences and festivals, throughout the UK for 60 years. It’s our belief that reading Christian literature is essential if we want to grow & mature in our faith. Christian books give us the opportunity to learn from wise teachers, to be inspired by

the heroes of our faith, to be challenged by those who have learnt to depend on God alone, and to be comforted by those who have travelled through difficult times. All this and more is available in the treasure of Christian literature! Come and have a browse, and if you need some inspiration please do have a chat with one of our staff.

Parents’ Guide to Focus The next few pages will outline what your children will be doing throughout the week at Focus. Our aim is to make this the best possible week for your family, as part of a large and diverse community. All the advice below is designed to help us live happily and safely together, so it is important to read the following pages carefully. We very much hope that Focus will be a blessing to you and your children. With love, Nicky and Sila Lee Associate Vicar at HTB and authors of The Marriage and Parenting Courses

Jenny Newman Head of Rising Generation (0–23 age group) at HTB

Rising Generation encompasses young children right the way through primary school (Focus Kids) to secondary school (Focus Youth) to young adults of university age (Focus Students). There will be a Focus Kids and Youth Help Desk for parents, staffed all morning by an experienced team. Please feel free to come and see us if you or your children need our support. 1. A ll parents and guardians should attend the Parents’ Welcome and Briefing on Wednesday morning at 9.30am in the Big Top. 2. W e ask parents and guardians to take full responsibility for their children and teenagers at all times outside their scheduled sessions at Focus Kids and Focus Youth. This includes supervising their behaviour; being vigilant about their whereabouts and wellbeing; ensuring that they get to bed at a suitable time and that they don’t prevent others from sleeping, particularly in the late evening or early morning.

3. W e ask parents not to leave the site when children are under the care of Focus Kids and Focus Youth. It is very important that we are able to contact parents and guardians and request their presence quickly. 4. P lease drop off and collect your children promptly for each of their sessions, which begin at 10.00am and end at 12.30pm from Wednesday to Sunday. 5. A ll children aged 8 and under must be taken to and collected from their groups by their parents or guardians using the card system, which is designed to ensure children’s safety. Nine and 10-year-olds are permitted to come and go alone, but this will be the decision of parents and guardians, who must take responsibility for them at all times when they are not in their correct age group location, at the scheduled programme times, under the responsibility of their age group leaders.

Focus Kids cannot take responsibility for children on their journey to and from their group, and parents would not be alerted if a child did not arrive. If parents of nine and ten-year-olds permit their children to come and go alone, we ask them to give the children’s small group helper a signed letter of permission on the first day. 6. D uring the main programmes, we ask that all bicycles are stowed in the marked areas around the bigger venues and that they are locked securely. 7. F amily Movies will be screened in the Focus Kids Green Tent from Monday to Sunday (4.00pm – 5.30pm). Children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult.

8. M issing children should be reported at the Info Hut, which is located in The Village; all reports of lost children are dealt with as a priority with an immediate on-site response. 9. T his year, your child’s age and age group at Focus Kids is the age he or she will be on 1 September 2017. 10. P lease note that no under18s are permitted to consume alcohol on the Focus site. 11. T here is a fast flowing river that runs through Somerley Estate. It is dangerous and cannot be swum in. Please speak with your children and warn them not to go anywhere near the river. There will be fencing and signage but please supervise your children onsite and let them know the dangers in advance.

Focus Kids Adventures with Jesus: The Ultimate Superhero There are three levels of living our life on earth: 1. MY ADVENTURE Each child at Focus (and each person on earth) is different from everyone else. We pray that each child will go on a unique and memorable adventure at Focus. 2. OUR ADVENTURE We are uniquely made, but the fact that we are all people made by God helps us to understand each other and to relate to one another. We pray that your children’s relationships will deepen as they go on an adventure with God and with friends in their small groups and age groups throughout the week.

3. THE ADVENTURE At Focus, we will be helping the children find different ways to place their own individual adventure, and their collective adventure, into the big over-arching adventure of God that we find in the pages of the Bible. We will be tracking Jesus’ journey through five biblical instants and, at each milestone, asking, in ageappropriate ways, ‘What might this mean for me, and for us?’

DAY ONE: FRIEND

DAY FOUR: RESCUER

The Calling of the First Disciples Matthew 4:18–22

Jesus Walks on Water Matthew 14:22–33

Jesus’ chose an unexpected group of friends:

When Jesus’ friends are in trouble, he does everything he can to rescue them. Even when he’s surrounded by water he doesn’t sink.

What does it tell us about who he is? Does Jesus choose me? How can I know? DAY TWO: HELP, ROCK, COMFORT Jesus Calms the Storm Mark 4:35–41 Jesus used his authority to help and protect his friends when they were scared. How can Jesus be my rock when I’m scared? How can I be like a rock to others? DAY THREE: HEALER Two Blind Men Receive Sight Matthew 20:29–34 Jesus’ healing of the blind man: What does that tell us about him? What does this mean for me?

How far would he go to rescue me? DAY FIVE: SAME POWER AS US Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Mark 6:1–6 It’s nearly time for Jesus to go home to heaven, but he doesn’t leave his friends alone without his help. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to be with his friends always. Where is the Holy Spirit now; is he still here? When I go home from Focus who will be with me? Don’t forget that your child’s age group is the age he or she is on 1 September 2017.

1–2s

3–6s

1yrs SKY BLUE

3–4yrs PURPLE

2yrs ORANGE

5–6yrs GREEN

Focus for the 1–2s will be a week where the children are cared for by a great team: we are so excited about welcoming your little ones into our safe, fun and creative tents.

There will be two Purple Home Zone tents for the 3–4s, and two clearly labelled Green Home Zone tents for the 5–6s. Each child will be part of a small group of peers with two dedicated small group helpers, there at their side all week to guide them through the Focus adventure, and these groups will, at times, gather together for ‘altogether times’, led by experienced team leaders.

We will have a daily structure that includes (according to age) worship time, craft time and Bible time with the little ones – amongst a plethora of other fun activities. We pray that this week the children will learn the simple but life-changing truth that Jesus loves them and will always love them as they journey through their lives. We want the Focus week to be a happy and settled week for children and their families, and we can’t wait to meet you all!

Within the structure of each morning there will be: colourful Bible stories around our five themes, songs of worship, times of prayer, creative zones, physical activities and sport.

7–10s 7–8yrs RED 9–10yrs BLUE As well as fun filled morning sessions, there are additional evening sessions for the 7–10s, which run from 7.15pm – 8.15pm. Each evening will have a special focus including mission, worship, prayer and more. The children will meet in their respective home zone tents, both of which are massive. Morning and evening sessions will include a mix of fun and faith filled activities, creative workshops and specialist sessions with music, dance and sport led by experienced team leaders. All the 7–10 year olds will be part of a small group with their own dedicated small group helpers, who will be there at their side all week to guide them through the Focus Adventure.

Our Tent Our Tent is a space within the Kids Village for children who have any kind of special need. We take ‘special need’ to mean requiring extra or different help from that given to other children of the same age. Children who come to Our Tent have one-to-one support from a volunteer buddy. Together with their parents and their one-to-one buddy children will plan with how best to spend the sessions – in Focus Kids venues, in Our Tent, or often a combination of both. Our Tent will be led by a great group of leaders with activities that follow the Focus Kids theme of Jesus our Superhero. We hope your child will discover more about Jesus this Focus.

Our Hut Our Hut is a space for youth who have any kind of special need. We take ‘special need’ to mean requiring extra or different help from that given to other young people of the same age. Youth who come to Our Hut will have extra support from a volunteer buddy to help them participate throughout the youth programme. Together with their parents and buddy they will be able to plan how best to spend the youth sessions – in the Focus Youth venue, in Our Hut, or in a combination of both. Our Hut will be led by a great team of volunteers, and the activities will follow the Focus Youth themes. We hope your young person will have a week discovering more of God.

Focus Youth #hopeanddream Focus Youth is an emerging movement of teenagers from around the UK. Together we thrive and gather to worship God and encounter him. For more information, get your hands on the Focus Youth magazine. We’re told this generation of young people are a hopeless generation. We’re told they’ve lost the ability to dream, that they’ve settled for a humdrum life. But... but...

You see, hope has this uncanny ability to show up where we least expect it. Before Jesus appeared, all looked hopeless. Yet suddenly, out of some backward town in Galilee came a murmuring. Hope was stirring, right where they least expected it. The eternal hope of Jesus gives hope in the here and now, hope right where we least expect it, hope that things can change, hope that our lives might matter. And once we have hope, we can begin to dream again. This year, one of our young people sang ‘All our hope, all our fears, we put our trust in you.’ This week at Focus, we’re going to hope and dream.
