Yo, so it’s the fall season, so obviously you gotta get all up in that warm coffee, nice friends, and huggy love scene. What better way to show all that love than with some arts & craftsy cute paper cutouts? There is no better way. I’m the best. I got a bunch of paper textures and cut and arranged them on photoshop to make a lovely little Starbucks-esque setting, you dig? ‘Cause fall’s all about that– cozy sweaters, soft scarves, warm drinks, and happiness. I chose some lovely warm tones to try and reflect that.

If you’ve been on Twitter lately, you know exactly who this is. Alex From Target, the guy who’s bagging your milk. Except, he’s a lot more attractive than anyone who has ever bagged my milk. On Sunday evening, twitter was blowing up one picture of a seemingly attractive bagboy, named Alex. Girls went ballistic. Everyone wanted to know what this guy’s name was and where he was from. How old is he? Which state is he from? Which target does he work in? In a matter of hours, all this information and more was leaked. In a matter of hours, a collection of hormone crazed teenage girls in Los Angeles were able to track down some guy from Frisco, Texas. And sure enough, in a matter of minutes, they tracked down Alex’s girlfriend. Fangirls then proceeded to send brutal death threats to his girlfriend for no other reason than the simple fact that they are dating. What has the internet come to? We can track some random guy 1,500 miles away using only a picture and a network of girls. A network of girls can actually join forces to stalk a boy together. Is no boy safe? Who’s next? Frankie from Starbucks? Matt from Red Robin? What if we were to use this newfound power for good? Thousands of people are reported missing every day. If we could blast pictures of these missing persons all over social media, we could actually save lives. Instead of stalking attractive boys, we could potentially decrease the number of missing persons. We obviously won’t give up all comedic aspects of Twitter. Let’s keep it fun and entertaining, but let’s also use our followers to spread news of issues that we think are important; issues that we want to solve. That is step one.

NEWSLETTER Dear HTLA Families: It’s hard to believe, but we are at the halfway mark of the semester! 10 week grades will be mailed home next Wednesday, 10/22. If you do not receive your child’s report card within 5 days, please call Ms. Singer in the Main Office at 818609-2687. Drop off and pick up are going smoothly this year thanks to parents following the directions that are detailed in the handbook – Thank you! Please remember that, for the safety of all students, the immediate front of the school is not a drop off or pick up area at any time.
We are not able to accommodate requests to relay messages to students during classes or after school. If you have an urgent message for your student, you may leave a message with the Main Office and they will call your student into the office at the next break (nutrition, lunch.) Other messages should be emailed to students during the school day. If your child is not in the habit of checking email during the school day, please remind him/her to do so. Also, if your student has an appointment during the school day, please have him/her bring a note to the office the morning of the appointment and then go to the office to be picked up at the appointed time. It is very disruptive to the education of the rest of the class to interrupt a class to retrieve a student. Our annual Fall Exhibition Night will be held from 6:00 – 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 18th. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend and all students will have work displayed. All students are expected to attend Exhibition Night and participate in the clean-up after.Lastly, 2014 – 2015 HTLA Yearbooks may be purchased at http://www.entourageyearbooks.com/YBStore/YearbookStoreMain. asp?YBID=7A010D1612

SENIORS EAT MEXICAN Emely Herrera Senior
Burrific turnout on Thursday’s Chipotle Night hosted by the class of 2015! All students showed their support for the Class of 2015 by purchasing Chipotle’s delicious burritos and bowls. Our wonderful seniors, Leemai Valensi, Liav Paz, Ana Asadollahpour, Sue Baharloo, and Alisa Tokarev, handed out flyers all night long to customers on Ventura Blvd. The number of people showing up to support the class was outstanding. HTLA students sat down inside the restaurant, enjoying their meals and each other’s company. Our amazing teachers took their time from their busy schedules to attend Chipotle as well! In the end, the class of 2015 raised over $900 in just four hours! This remarkable success was truly thanks to the entire HTLA community. Thank you all for attending the event and don’t worry if you missed it! Be sure to keep an eye out for the next Chipotle Night in January 2015!

ADVICE Dear A,
Ms. Rostami seems really strict and I’m failing her class. What are some tips you can give me to be able to do better in her class?
?
Oh, let me just start off by saying Ms. Rostami is a great teacher, and great person in general; but she is one of the strictest teachers I have ever had. No matter what grade level you’re in, just know that you will get used to it. Her class is tough, it’s no joke, but the fear will go away soon. To insure that you pass the class, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I can’t stress that enough. She hates it when people don’t complete the homework she assigns. Test are also very important in that class so designate time to study. I know most people don’t really study for math class, or don’t know how... but it’s absolutely necessary to put aside time to study for her classes. Don’t be scared to ask questions and go to tutoring if needed. Just remember, you are definitely not alone in your struggle. Try forming a study group.

Dear A,
It’s been hard for me to make friends lately and it’s already been 2 months. What should I do?
I know it’s difficult to come into a new school with new faces but I can assure you that the one thing you don’t have to worry about here at High Tech, is making friends. Because we have framed our school with project-based learning, you’re surely to meet friends in class. The easiest and fastest way, however, is to join some clubs! Here at HTLA we have a lot of great clubs such as the Journalism club, Operation Donation, Eco Club, Robotics, GSA, Game Club, and many more. Based on what your interests are, choose a club or two and you’re bound to find people that share the same interests as you.

SPORTS volleyball: a guide to the game
Annie Shahbazyan Freshman
Volleyball is a team sport where two teams play against each other. Six players from each team are up against one another and are only separated by a net. Players from the opposite team have to get the volleyball to fall on the opposite side of the court. For example, if you are on the right side of the court your goal is to get the ball on the left side. When the ball touches the ground, then you will get a point under well-regulated rules. A volleyball game starts when a player on one of the teams begins the game by serving the ball over the net onto the other team’s court. However, the person serving the ball has to stand behind the back boundary line. The opposite team’s task is to not let the ball fall onto their side of the court. The team only gets 3 times to touch the ball, and the third touch has to get the ball over the net. Players on the opposing team may not strike the ball over the net the first time they touch the ball. When the ball is served, and Alexa Smith, US Junior Volleyball team player it goes over the net, the first thing Photographed by advantagefo you should do is either set the ball or bump it. If the ball is served, it goes to the back line. You should either dive down or step back to bump it. If the ball is served to the front line, the line closest to the net, you should set it, set it up so that the other players can bump it or again, set it. This particular rule is not really mandatory to follow. You can bump the ball if you are in the back line or set it if you are in the back. However, you can’t strike on a serve! Later on in the game when the ball is going back and forth striking may be needed, but you would have to be standing in the front line to do so. If you’re standing in the front line you may also block the ball by jumping up and not hitting the ball, but simply preventing it to go over the net onto your side of the court. These are some skills every volleyball player should be aware of. In more detail, a serve is when a player stands behind the inline and serves the ball.

OPINION feminism: a fancy word for “gender equality”
Liz Weiler Senior
Tal Boussi Senior
The true goal of feminism is not widely known. Only 20% of Americans consider themselves feminists while 82% of Americans promote gender equality (1). In reality, the two are the same thing. People hear the word feminism and jump to the conclusion that it is a social justice movement that hates men, when it is really quite the opposite. Feminism is simply a social justice movement that promotes gender equality. Any form of feminism that does not promote gender equality is not feminism. Feminist ideals really are that simple: men and women should be equal. There are women who are radical in their “feminist” views. They are man - haters, but there are always radicals. These radicals are not the representors of all feminists. In the same way that there are radicals in feminists, there are radicals in the muslim community. Not every muslim believes that 9/11 was a great thing, but now all muslims are thought to be evil and horrible when in reality, those extremists who committed the act are not a representation of all the muslim community’s core beliefs and it is completely ignorant and uninformed to think so. Many muslims are being attacked and bullied daily by Americans who are ignorant and think that the entire muslim community is somehow in on terrorism. The entire Christian community is not represented by the extremists radicals of the Westboro Baptist Church. Avoiding the real issues of men and women’s equal rights to complain and or attack radicals does not solve any problems and does not being the society together for a better future. One common widespread myth about feminism is that the movement doesn’t take men’s rights into account. In reality, feminists acknowledge that gender inequality hurts both men and women. The fact that men feel like they can’t openly cry is a result of the male gender role that men should show no emotion in order to keep their masculinity. This is an example of how gender roles hurt men, which is why the majority of feminists believe that
htlaTODAY’s november edition
photo by world time gender roles should be eliminated. Men crying is connected to the fact that crying is reserved to females and women, and so adhering to this kind of behavior is embarrassing because to cry is to downgrade yourself to a feminine state. When there are statements that end with “like a girl” such as “you throw like a girl,” it is showing that being feminine is downgrading. These are terms that young girls are taunted with, making women think that being a female is always less than being a male from a very young age. This also teaches young boys that they are superior to women in a very subconscious manner. A myth that must be debunked is that biology is the main factor in gender difference. This is not true. Biology is the main factor in sex difference. Gender, however, is socially constructed. Society loves to categorize things when they see differences. This is why when some babies are born and do not live up to the boy and girl standard, there is a “social emergency” which can allow doctors to alter the gender of the child without their permission just because society likes to categorize people. However, having institutions built upon this gender dichotomy is essentially like splitting the world up into thin and fat people. There are biological differences between thin and fat people. There are all kinds of biological factors that can influence someone’s weight whether they eat healthy and exercise or not. This should not be a reason to give people unequal opportunities based on their weight or looks. In the same way, biology and gender are linked, but social aspects hugely affect the process. This is something that must be taken into consideration when many hold the view that gender differences can not be helped.
Girls and boys are not innately born with the qualities that align with their appropriate gender roles. They are socialized into gender roles. Girls, for the most part, are not born with an innate, biological love of the color pink. Rather, they are socialized to love pink when all of the girls toys in a store are pink. Girls are not innately born loving dolls and clothes - they are led down that path by a society that tells girls that they should love dolls and clothes. If a girl wants to play with toy dinosaurs, most adults will not allow her because those are “boy toys.” Our gender paths are made for us since birth when girls are told to look up to skinny barbie dolls while boys are told to play with their buff GI Joe action figures. It is no wonder that the generalization is that girls are obsessed with looks while boys are obsessed with aggression. It is because we have been socialized to become this way. To say that these traits are innate and biological is absurd when we have been guided down gender paths our entire lives. Gender inequality is not only a real issue, but a socially constructed one. If social inequalities were constructed by our society, then they can certainly be undone by our society. Feminists believe that this gender equality would be beneficial to the society as a whole, not just themselves. Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

It seems Halloween is careening around the corner yet again in its usual form. Commercials, decorations, Party City sales, and every single horror flick trying to squeeze its way into opening on October 31st. Perhaps this year among the Rob Zombie remakes and “gut-em-ups” we might find a few gems. Actually, I heard that James Wan released a new movie as a precursor to “The Conjuring,” which I actually liked, despite its numerous flaws. Maybe this movie will learn from the mistakes made by its predecessor. Maybe the two stories will connect with each other and we’ll learn more about Ed and Lorain Warren. Maybe, it will be good movie. “Annabelle” is not a good movie. There are many reasons why. I will try to get through all of them, but first let’s review the plot. A possessed doll threatens a family by attempting to steal their newborn baby’s soul. “Great! I love creepy dolls! This should be scary!” said everyone. “Great! I just blew twenty bucks on a bad movie! That wasn’t scary!” said everyone also. And it’s true, because while I was skeptical that a horror movie prequel was sort of already set up for failure, I knew that I liked the idea of a doll in a horror film because I knew there was no way that wouldn’t be scary. But it turns out that I didn’t factor in the possibility of the director (who I later found out was not James Wan) not utilizing the doll entirely. The doll sits there, and that’s all it does, and it’s just a doll!
htlaTODAY’s november edition
The reason that this is so mind boggling to me is that other parts of this movie were very scary! Very few parts were scary, but at least I know that the people behind “Annabelle” know how to create an atmosphere that is effective to an extent. However, this is not the case for the majority of the film. And I know that my idea of scary isn’t always going to be someone else’s idea of scary, but for the sake of this review which is by definition my experience and opinions of the film, I will say that it was not scary. If there was anything good besides the creation of atmospheric horror from Annabelle I would praise the cinematography and more specifically the angling of shots to provide an imbalance in the tone and physicality of the film. But the rest of the movie is decimated by bad performances, an ineffective execution of the premise as far as horror goes, and yet another terrible third act in the long line of James Wan films. I’m disappointed to say that “Annabelle” did not fix the mistakes made in “The Conjuring”; it merely expanded upon them.

HIDDEN GEMS

Music has the power to spread an emotion across a crowd of people and bring them together. The band Modern Baseball does a great job at doing that. Modern Baseball formed at Drexel University in 2012. Jake Ewald and Brendan Lukens write pop-punk indie rock songs. At first they were an acoustic act, but once they met Sean Huber (drums) and Ian Farmer (bass), they became a four-piece. Their song “Tears Over Beers” creates an image of remembering how Ewald used to dance with someone he loved. It talks about troubled love that he eventually he got over. They aren’t the most skilled musicians or the best vocalists, but they create awesome music. To be honest I’m pretty impressed with what they can do, and their ability to give emotional value to their songs is amazing. Listen to their songs “The Weekend” and “Two Good Things.” Both have the ability to conjure up images and feelings.
Why does music give us pleasure? Sometimes it’s about the element of surprise. A band that can give that rush of excitement is The Front Bottoms. Their music is a mix of pop, rock, and punk, and they have a surreal view of the world. Mathew Uychich plays the drums and bullhorn, and Brian Sella sings and plays the guitar. Their song Twin Size Mattress tells a story that pulls people in. I believe the song is about someone being sent away because of something they did, so their plan is to just run away. But his/her friends are begging him/her to stay. Other songs by them are “12 Feet Deep” and “Lipstick Covered Magnet.” This is a wonderful band that hasn’t received the attention they deserve. Their music causes such intense emotion that simple words can’t really explain. If you’re looking for a new fresh band to follow, check called Kill It Kid out. NME and Clash magazine rated their debut album 8/10 and 9/10. My favorite song by them is “Carolina” and I think it’s about young, immature love. The girl in the song is an obsession and temptation. Their other songs are “Wild and Wasted Waters” and “I’ll Be the First.” Kill it Kid’s music is influenced by British Blues, Delta Blues, roots and Ragtime. Bands similar to them are The White Stripes and Band of Skulls. Listen to one of their songs and find out for yourself if you think this band is awesome.

Skirts not your thing? No problem. Jeans and leggings are a must have in your closet! Nothing more comfortable and quick than adding a sumptuous coat or an oversized sweater. If it gets a little chilly, then don’t be afraid to add a nice big scarf or a beanie/headpiece. Can never go wrong with that! Some nice brown tones in your wardrobe would look great. You can incorporate that with a belt or a small handbag. If you want to spice it up a bit then add some of your favorite jewelry! Some nice bronze or gold colors would go well with this seasons colors. Or maybe some pastel floral earrings would sure be a bonus! Whatever you put together will look great as long as you love it and are yourself. Hope these tips helped! photos by brandy melville

FEATURED autumn diy This cute and edible cornucopia treat can be used as an adorable giveaway at any friend or family Thanksgiving gathering. To make this you will need a waffle cone as well as little treats to fill the waffle cone such as m&ms or skittles. To create the cone’s cornucopia shape, you must dip the tip of the waffle cone into warm water for around 20 seconds. Then, you must wrap the soft cone tip around a pencil and leave it be for around 20 more seconds. Take the pencil out and put the little treats inside to create your little cornucopia! Put it in a goodie bag for a finishing touch.
Making this apple-cider float is very simple. All you really need is apple cider and ice cream, but adding in a cinnamon stick and other fun ingredients can make it taste even better! To assemble the float, pile in as much ice cream as you wish into your favorite mason jar mug. Then, drizzle some optional cinnamon over the ice cream if you’re feeling particularly good about yourself. Pour in the apple cider until your ice cream is completely covered. A spoonful of caramel as well as another sprinkle of cinnamon will make this float to die for.

Do you want your home to have the sweet, mesmerizing aroma of autumn air without actually having to leave your house? I have just the thing for you! To give your house a cozy, welcoming scent all you need are four ingredients: one apple, a few cinnamon sticks, a handful of cloves, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. After slicing open your apple, all you have to do is plop the four ingredients into heated water and wait for your home to smell like the gates of heaven.
To make these lovely jars that bring the feeling of autumn warmth into your area, all you need is a mason jar, autumn leaves, mod podge and a cute ribbon or string to tie around the jar. Get a mason jar from your local dollar tree and the fall leaves from, well, the floor! Dampen your leaves to make sure they don’t crumble and then stick them to the outside of your mason jar. Once it’s surrounded with the leaves, tie it with a ribbon or bow and take in the beauty of your creation! Put a candle on the inside of your jar to create a real glowing masterpiece.
