WELCOME TO OUR SPRING/ SUMMER SEASON My vision is for our theatre to be a vibrant, cultural hub and that means presenting work that is accessible to all members of our community. I work closely with colleagues at the theatre to ensure we include a balance that both responds to the remarkable stories of Hull’s people and places and widens our horizons to embrace compelling and relevant stories from further afield. As well as continuing to present our own productions with a Northern Voice and welcoming established partners like Northern Broadsides and Hull Jazz Festival, we’ve introduced new strands of programming, such as live streaming cultural performances and events from around the world and Thank Truck It’s Friday music nights. I hope you find lots to look forward to in the following pages and, for those of you who want to get closer to the work we do, I can recommend our Grow Festival (pages 24-25),or our series of Discover events (page 34). See you soon,

HULL TRUCK SCREEN
In the summer of 2015 we installed a state of the art screen and sound system in the Studio Theatre and have been streaming live broadcasts in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, Opera Australia and, from 29 November, the new Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company. These screenings run alongside our season in partnership with Hull Independent Cinema and have proved very popular. See page 33 and book early to avoid disappointment!
HULL UK CITY OF CULTURE 2017 We are working closely with the team at City of Culture and, without giving anything away, we can promise a year of theatre beyond anything we’ve done before. The projects and partnerships we’re planning all convey the message that this is Hull’s moment to stand up and be noticed. This work isn’t just going to happen on the stages - we’re joining forces with other arts organisations across the city to reach new audiences and engage people of all ages, from all communities.
GROW FESTIVAL 2016
Our annual Grow Festival continues to go from strength to strength and we work throughout the year to support and develop artists of all ages and in all stages of their career. This year we are launching Be Our Guest – welcoming artists to be resident with us for an extended period of time in order to develop new work. Turn to pages 24-25 to find out how you can get involved, or be the first to witness the theatre of the future.

BY CHARLOTTE JONES DIRECTED BY MARK BABYCH In a suburban semi on a cold winter’s evening, a collection of family, friends and acquaintances gather to celebrate a birthday. There’s Josie, the ageing dominatrix conducting business from her living room and in no mood to celebrate; her daughter Brenda-Marie with a wisdom beyond her years; Martha – Josie’s devout Irish cleaner who’s none the wiser and happy to keep it that way; and, of course, Lionel – Josie’s most loyal client with a heart of gold and a secret yearning to wear ladies dresses. But no party would be complete without entertainment, and for once Josie has the night off. Elvis impersonator Timothy Wong has entered the building and only the arrival of a very unexpected guest could upstage the King himself. Heartfelt, poignant and funny in equal measure, Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis captures the glimmer of promise and potential that lies in all of us - shining a spotlight on the opportunities that are out there, if only we choose to take them.

GOING VIRAL WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY DANIEL BYE DIRECTED BY DICK BONHAM
An aeroplane flies from Uganda to England. Everyone on board is weeping. Everyone except you. On the ground, the weeping spreads. Is it a strange new disease? An outbreak of hysteria? Or has the world become genuinely sad? In this uncanny, high-definition world we are all more connected, more vulnerable, and more human - but not equally so.

“Jackie, now you’ve had your leg off you could be a Paralympian!” “Yeah, just as much as you could be an Olympian, I’m gonna carry on being me...” Jackie Hagan spent the summer of 2013 in hospital. FAMILY
From the heart of Northumberland, Alistair Anderson’s exciting new line-up conjures the spirit of the landscape with music. Alistair’s own tunes rub shoulders with those of the Northumbrian shepherds who inspired him, alongside old tunes passed through many generations. Sarah Hayes’ carefully chosen songs bring a different dimension and the whole is underpinned by arrangements that make the music soar.

MARK WATSON: I'M NOT HERE A seemingly minor problem at an airport is the starting point for a spiralling examination of identity in the digital age. But with an enormous number of jokes, luckily, as well as Watson’s customary flailing, chaotic audience interactions and all sorts of other fun. In short: if you like comedy, but you don’t come and see this, you’re acting very oddly.
