WELCOME... to the second half of our year of exceptional drama. This season we celebrate the many and varied journeys that people make towards a better life. Tales from South Africa, Ukraine and Dickensian Britain all combine to tell a story of hope, transition and change. Highlights of the Freedom season include the opportunity to see a world class piece of theatre The Suitcase from the Market Theatre of Johannesburg, a world premiére based on Marina Lewycka's Novel A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and we’ve even got an additional production that’s so special we are not going to announce it until August so please do look out for it! As parents ourselves we know sharing a theatre experience with a child can be extra special, so we have increased our family offer with a host of productions you can share as a family, including The Gruffalo’s Child, The Hogwallops and the extra magical A Christmas Carol, one of our favourites.

CIRCUS

It’s 1950s South Africa. A young newly married couple leave their rural village and disapproving family, for the city of Durban. Their goal: to return home, rich and free.

EVENT

But, alienated in the city, unemployed and poor, Timi starts to lose his moral compass. Desperate to provide for his pregnant wife he steals a suitcase left on a bus not knowing what might be inside; an act which brings frightening consequences, dramatic twists and unexpected turns. Based on a true story, The Suitcase has been nominated in the New Director category in the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards for The Rosalie van der Gucht Prize. Director James Ngcobo saw enormous theatrical potential in this poignant and emotive story and so adapted it for stage. The production - evocative, visual and moving encompasses African storytelling and lyrical music at its very best. Es'kia Mphahlele is among South Africa’s greatest writers, thinkers and critics. Respected worldwide as a literary luminary, he has published many short stories, essays and novels dealing with issues of race and South Africa’s changing society. Hugh Masekela, legendary South African musician, has written the perfect soundtrack to this powerful piece.

“This gold digging, blonde bombshell, with her superior breasts is not going to con our father of his small worldly possessions.”

EVENT

Meet Nikolai, a retired Ukrainian engineer and tractor historian, and his daughters, Vera and Nadezhda, who haven’t spoken since the death of their mother. None of them are prepared for the fluffy pink grenade that’s about to explode into their lives. Nikolai is instantly besotted with thirty-six year old bombshell Valentina, but is she a refuge searching for better opportunities, or visa seeker trying to cheat a vulnerable old man? The sisters unite in horror to defend their father and what remains of his pension. As Valentina’s dreams of Western prosperity begin to shatter, things take a darker turn. Nadezhda and her shaken family must face the ghosts of their past, confront their heritage and rediscover relationships. Marina Lewycka’s million-copy bestselling novel won The Bollinger Everyman Prize for Comic Fiction and the Waverton Good Read Award, and was shortlisted for The Orange Prize for Fiction in 2005. Adapted by award-winning playwright Tanika Gupta (The Waiting Room, The Empress, Anita and Me) as a piece of ensemble storytelling, this family comedy continues to have sharp relevance to today’s society.

COMEDY

On a cold Christmas Eve, four spirits conspire to show Ebenezer Scrooge the error of his ways. His old business partner, Jacob Marley has returned from the dead to offer him a second chance, if he can change his mean and miserly behaviour.

CIRCUS

EVENT

Nowhere are the effects of poverty more keenly felt than in the Cratchit family, especially by their youngest son, Tiny Tim. As Scrooge’s inspirational journey shows him both the hardship and love of those around him, he is reminded of his own powers of charity and kindness. This fresh adaptation of Dicken’s classic Christmas ghost story, set in Hull, is a magical, festive treat for all the family.

“A Christmas Carol remains as fresh and relevant today as it was in 1843. It’s a heart-warming and hopeful tale about how generosity can triumph over inequality, and how everyone deserves a chance at redemption.” Playwright Deborah McAndrew

Having kids is not an easy decision: Can I afford it? Have I got enough room? Will I screw it up?

Yes, yes ‘they’ do. Fast moving, raw and eye-opening, Mia explores the truths and myths about learning disability and parenthood in today’s society. Think pop culture with popcorn, science with silliness, stories with statistics. Mia challenges the often taken for granted idea of ‘being a parent’. OFF THE KERB PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

RICH HALL’S HOEDOWN

A post-show discussion will follow every performance.

Rich Hall’s critically acclaimed new show begins its second leg of touring. There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. His BBC Four documentaries, most recently Rich Hall’s Countrier Than You and Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match and BBC Radio 4 series Rich Hall’s (US Election) Breakdown have built him a new legion of followers, as has appearances on Have I Got News For You and QI. But if you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve short-changed yourself.

THIS EVIL THING "For God’s sake! This protest of yours – is it really worth losing your lives over?" January 1916: Bert Brocklesby is a young schoolteacher, and preacher at his local Methodist church; Bertrand Russell is one of the greatest philosophers of his time. With the advent of military conscription their worlds are about to be turned upside down.

This Evil Thing is the compelling, shocking and inspiring story of the men who said no to war; a rarely told story involving a dizzying journey from a chapel in Yorkshire to the House of Commons; from an English country garden to a quarry in Aberdeen; from a cell in Richmond Castle to a firing squad in France.

FINLAY MCGUIGAN'S GREAT ADVENTURES IN STORYLAND Finlay McGuigan loves stories. He enjoys diving in to the depths of his imagination, making friends and going on exciting adventures. But some stories are missing beginnings, ends, pages, maps and clues, and he needs your help to save the stories! FOR AGES 3-6

With military conscription still in force in many countries today, and prisoners of conscience still languishing in jails, the questions posed by This Evil Thing are as relevant and urgent as they were one hundred years ago.

ELECTRIC STRAWBS Following their superb acoustic inauguration in Britain’s fertile 1960s world of traditional folk, the innovative music of the Strawbs, as exemplified by the band’s resourceful and inventive leader and writer Dave Cousins, had to open out to develop a richer, electric framework to accommodate ambitious new compositions. By expanding their soundscape with the addition of such luminaries as keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman, their catalogue took on a new grandeur. As ever, the resourceful and imaginative Dave Cousins fronts the show, and in addition to long-time regulars Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk, the electric Strawbs are proud to have Tony Fernandez on drums, and Dave Bainbridge on keyboards. All in all, this is an impressive combination of terrific talent to showcase some enduring compositions. SONGS FOR THE END OF THE WORLD BY DOM COYOTE AND THE BLOODMONEYS

Musician and theatre maker Dom Coyote and his hi-octane multi-instrumentalist band The Bloodmoneys obliterate the line between epic theatre and raucous gig. Inspired by Philip K Dick's post-apocalyptic novel Dr. Bloodmoney and David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, Songs for the End of the World is a show like no other. Welcome to New Albion, a near-future dystopia of suffering and exploitation. While some predict armageddon, many are simply preparing for the end. When the apocalypse does arrive, astronaut Jim Walters is left suspended in orbit on his way to Mars, broadcasting his songs for the end of the world back to a silent Earth. Dom Coyote is a regular collaborator with Kneehigh Theatre and his high octane, multiinstrumentalist band, The Bloodmoneys, have toured and recorded with artists including Beth Orton, Scissor Sisters, Gary Newman.
