WELCOME... What an incredible year 2017 has been, not just for us here at Hull Truck Theatre, but for the city of Hull which has delivered a spectacular UK City of Culture of which we can all be proud. We’d like to say an enormous thank you to all our staff who have worked so incredibly hard to deliver this year of exceptional drama with such dedication. And of course to you, our audience, who have responded so enthusiastically and in such numbers, to the work we have made in both our theatre spaces and out in the city. The fastest selling show in the theatre’s history, our co-production with the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Hypocrite by Richard Bean, got us off to an outstanding start. Featuring a stellar cast led by Mark Addy and Caroline Quentin, Philip Breen’s production was much loved by audiences filling the theatre every night with a swell of true Hullensian pride. What a joy it was to hear the laughter and the passion ring out in the packed Swan Theatre in Stratford, carrying the pride of the city into the hearts and minds of audiences far and wide.

We celebrated Barrie Rutter and Northern Broadsides as they marked their 25th Anniversary with a production of Richard III starring Mat Fraser. Mat breathed powerful new life into the role of Richard as an actor with a disability playing one of Shakespeare’s most famous villains – the authenticity of his words hit us more deeply and profoundly and reminded us of the journey our industry still needs to make in truly reflecting the diversity of a modern Britain on our stages. Our youth theatre and over 55s theatre makers Act III lent their unique voices to this year through their intergenerational site-specific project Defiance at The Guildhall and the epic retelling of Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend in a brand new adaptation by Bryony Lavery that saw around 60 young people grace our main stage. The Hull Trilogy came to a conclusion with Amanda Whittington’s Mighty Atoms, celebrating the achievements of women in Hull through the lens of a community boxing show. Through a blend of spectacular choreography, physicality, warmth and

spirit, this production reflected the work of inspiring organisations such as Goodwin Development Trust and Vulcan Learning Centre to build a hopeful future for our communities. Local stories are a key part of our artistic identity at Hull Truck Theatre and it’s been a privilege to share them with the rest of country – The Last Testament of Lillian Bilocca by Maxine Peake, staged at The Guildhall, was a powerful and relevant political piece about the women of Hull standing up against injustice. As the city looks more and more internationally, we were able to cement our growing relationships with the British Council in Ukraine and Sierra Leone, where some of our Supported Artists have been making work with artists in Freetown. We achieved a long held ambition to bring the Market Theatre Johannesburg to Hull with their moving production of The Suitcase featuring the sublime music of Hugh Masekela and direction by James NgCobo. Our production of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian lifted the lid on one of the darkest chapters of Eastern European history and examined attitudes to migrants through the eye of people who were once immigrants themselves. As our world becomes more divided, it seems more important than ever that we continue to tell stories and share experiences from beyond our borders that unite us in our common humanity.

we continue our commitment to new work and building new partnerships that enable us to connect with as broad a spectrum of audiences and artists as possible. We’re thrilled to be working with James Graham, one of the UK’s leading dramatists and Hull University alumnus, on the world premiere of The Culture – A Farce in Two Acts, our final production in our Year of Exceptional Drama programme for HULL2017. Granted behind the scenes access to the year that was, James takes a comic look at the culture behind the culture! We’re also continuing our commitment to more women’s voices on our stages and are delighted to be joining forces with our friends at the New Vic Theatre and Oldham Coliseum in a new version of the classic Ealing Comedy Whisky Galore that takes its inspiration from the all-female touring theatre companies of the 1950s. And rounding off the spring summer season we have the world première of Clown Klub, a dark comedy set in Hull written by the hugely talented comedian Lucy Beaumont.

Alongside our diverse programme of visiting companies and work by some of Hull’s brightest young theatre makers, all of us at Hull Truck Theatre are excited about continuing the momentum of 2017 far into the future, ensuring that our city remains firmly on the map as a world class visitor and cultural destination. A FARCE IN TWO ACTS COMEDY

WORLD PREMIÈRE PRODUCTION BY JAMES GRAHAM DIRECTED BY MARK BABYCH

DANCE

CIRCUS

January 2018, and a busy day at the offices of Hull 2017. Today is the ceremonial handover to ambassadors from the next City of Culture. Meanwhile, the monitoring and evaluation team have to present The Audit – a measurement of the impact ‘the culture’ has had on the city. Can their logic models, outcome evaluations and statistical analyses really measure its impact on the people of Hull? The visiting Minister from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport certainly expect so.

EVENT

What could go wrong…? Only, perhaps, Dennis, an "average citizen" who arrives into the offices of Hull 2017 on Lowgate to register a complaint but accidentally finds himself at the centre of events that could bring the whole thing to its knees.

The Culture is a satirical farce in two acts, examining the 'culture' of culture, and the inner workings of the Hull 2017 project. Playwright James Graham (writer of Ink and Labour of Love which ran concurrently in the West End in 2017; This House nominated for the Olivier Best Play award; and The Vote, nominated for a BAFTA) was granted behind the scenes access to the running of the yearlong festival.

WHISKY GALORE BY COMPTON MACKENZIE ADAPTED BY PHILIP GOULDING DIRECTED BY KEVIN SHAW

COMEDY

DANCE

The islanders of Great and Little Todday are dismayed to find their whisky supply dwindling as the UK government diverts the precious stuff to the Americans, in an attempt to bribe them into supporting the British war-effort. When the whisky runs out completely it seems like the end of the world…

CIRCUS

EVENT

But then a 50,000 whisky bottle cargo is shipwrecked close by the islands, and welcome relief seems to be at hand. Conflict is guaranteed, however, once stuffy Paul Waggett of the Home Guard takes it upon himself to try to reinforce discipline and prevent the thirsty islanders from taking advantage of their apparent good fortune. Meanwhile, as in the finest of Shakespearian comedies, two weddings are planned: one hinges on timid George Campbell finally finding the (Dutch?) courage to stand up to his disapproving mother; the other involves an English Officer’s love for the daughter of a leading whisky filcher. This new production, set in 1955, is a tribute to the feisty, fearless all-female touring theatre companies of the post-war years. Under the dogmatic direction of the redoubtable Flora Bellerby, witness the Pallas Players - Win, Leaky, Bea, Aileen, Connie and last-minute replacement Juliet – as they play all the hilarious and diverse characters from Mackenzie’s comedy classic, in an innovative and beguiling adaptation that breathes fresh life into a well-loved, internationallyacknowledged masterpiece.

“This comedy classic is given a fresh twist by being brought to life by an all female cast.” Artistic Director - Mark Babych

Together, they weave a magical spell, effortlessly travelling musically from India to Africa, the Middle East and the USA.

Wall to Wall Prince Tickets £23 (students and under-26s £6) His Purple Highness would have been 60 this year. David McAlmont interprets a back catalogue richer and more varied than perhaps any other recording artist. David’s music is pure emotion. One of the UK’s most distinctive vocalists, he’s collaborated with the likes of Bond composer David Arnold, Michael Nyman, Paul Weller and most famously with Bernard Butler, producing the classic hit singleYes.

“Help Hull Truck Theatre to build a cultural legacy for the city.” Our Year of Exceptional Drama 2017 as part of Hull UK City of Culture was one of our busiest and most successful years so far and we couldn’t have done it without the continuing support of our loyal audiences. The excitement continues this year and we hope you will all continue to be part of our story as it unfolds. In fact, we’re counting on you. Supporting Cast is our flagship regular giving scheme that enables our friends to make regular donations in support of key areas of our work. By giving you can help create a legacy for our city by investing in the theatre, the artists we work with and the communities we support. A regular donation can make a really big difference:

£5 a month

£10 a month

£20 a month

Will help 6 disadvantaged young people from across Hull to see our Christmas show.

Will help us offer on the job training to the next generation of theatre technicians from across the city.

Will help us nurture up and coming local artists through our Supported Artist scheme.

It’s amazing the difference a regular donation can have on our theatre. For details of how to join Supporting Cast, visit www.hulltruck.co.uk. 38
