SEASON BROCHURE
Box Office 01482 323638
JANUARY - JULY 2019
hulltruck.co.uk
WELCOME A big warm Hull Truck Theatre welcome to all! We’ve got some terrific productions lined up for audiences this season which really demonstrate the breadth and depth of our artistic programme. I’m delighted to be reuniting with Barrie Rutter after the huge success of Richard III as part of Hull 2017. Barrie will direct and play the title role of Jack Lear in a thrilling story set on the banks of the River Humber, with music by the supremely gifted Eliza Carthy. We will also be working with four other theatres this season to bring you stories from the wider world, including Chinonyerem Odimba’s fantastic new play Princess & The Hustler. Directed by the brilliant Dawn Walton in co-production with Eclipse Theatre and Bristol Old Vic, the show will embark on a national tour, which is really exciting. We’ll be working with Queen's Theatre Hornchurch to co-produce one of my favourite ever musicals The Hired Man in association with Oldham Coliseum Theatre. We’ll also be working in association with Hull-theatre makers Middle Child, whose unique brand of theatre has been taking audiences across the country by storm. I’m really looking forward to seeing their latest work which has been written by the talented Maureen Lennon, along with music by gig theatre maestro, James Frewer. This piece will appear on our mainstage at a time of enormous political change for our country.
It’s 10 years since the company moved into our building on Ferensway and to celebrate we have commissioned 10, ten-minute plays to be performed by our young company from writers with close connections to the city; including Ellen Brammer, Lydia Marchant, Josh Overton and Morgan Sproxton. I’ve also commissioned a new piece by Hull artist Hester Ullyart called Paragon Dreams that I’m thrilled to be directing as a follow-up to the mesmerising Ballad of Paragon Station. As part of the 10 year celebrations, we’ll also be offering new local audiences the opportunity to experience the amazing variety of work on offer here for absolutely FREE. See page 3 for more details. Alongside our producing work, we are delighted to present a thrilling array of visiting work including Rupert Creed’s highly acclaimed tribute to Mick Ronson, Turn and Face The Strange, the return of the incredible Barely Methodical Troupe with their breath-taking acrobatic new show SHIFT; and great family shows including Room on The Broom, Wind in the Willows and Slime. I’m extremely proud of the whole team at Hull Truck Theatre who work hard to bring you the highest quality experience possible. I hope you find something in the programme to enjoy and we look forward to welcoming you to your theatre soon. Mark Babych Artistic Director & Chief Executive

JAMIE WOOD PRESENTS
I AM A TREE When I am still for any length of time, someone finds me and tells me about their life. Granddad taught me what I know about listening. And now there’s a gap in my landscape. Last year I walked 150 miles back to where my grandparents were born, to look for what I’ve lost- a homemade pilgrimage, returning to roots, slow motion time travel. The show is something else entirely. A dance party with ghosts, in a forest, in a theatre. A hopping ritual. An invitation to drink deep: to face the shadows that growl on your insides and laugh big. Hold on tight!
