These performances sit alongside a series of workshops lead by some of the UK’s leading companies and artists. Outside of the official programme, the Grow Festival is a place to make new connections, find future collaborators and celebrate new ideas.

COME TO WHERE I’M FROM Since 2010 writers from across the UK have returned to their home towns to pen plays about the places that shaped them. At theatres from Bristol to Belfast, Cardiff to Coventry and Nottingham to Newcastle, these plays have been performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale. Now Come To Where I’m From visits Hull to invite four of the city’s finest playwrights to join this celebrated nationwide project by performing their own short plays about their home. 130 previous Come To Where I’m From plays are available in audio form, for free, on the App Store.

Join us afterwards for a Q&A session (with panellists including Garfield Allen, Director of STUN, and Amanda Huxtable, Artistic Associate at Hull Truck Theatre and ACE Change Maker) to discuss creative opportunities over a buffet. Sustained Theatre Up North | STUN are part of a National Movement dedicated to the growth and prosperity of BAME Creatives across the UK.
Award-winning playwright James Graham comes to Grow Festival to share his thoughts and some practical skills. James’s work for theatre, TV and Film includes This House (National Theatre & West End, 2016), nominated for the Oliver Best Play award, Finding Neverland the Musical (Broadway 2015), Coalition (Channel 4) and The Vote (Donmar Warehouse). He is an alumni of The University of Hull.

GROW GOES INTERNATIONAL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BRITISH COUNCIL SIERRA LEONE. Hull Truck Theatre and British Council Sierra Leone are working together on an international artist exchange programme. The programme starts at the Grow Festival and will form a new international strand of HTT’s yearround Grow programme. Artists from Sierra Leone will meet and work with artists connected to the Grow Festival, participating in the programme and immersing themselves in the cultural life of the city. In the Autumn, artists from Hull will make a return visit, collaborating to create a new performance. The partnership is part of Hull-Freetown 2017, a year-long programme of cultural, civic and educational activities.
