September 2021 — January 2022

FAMILY MUSIC DRAMA

EVENTS FILM COMEDY

WELCOME BACK! Thank you for supporting us as we reopened this summer, it was great to see audiences back enjoying live theatre. We also hugely enjoyed trying something new with our open-air version of Romeo and Juliet at Stage@TheDock, it was fantastic to receive such a warm response to this production. With Government guidance now permitting fuller capacities we have been able to re-programme some of the visiting work we were unable to present during our closure. Turn and Face the Strange, The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff and Sunny Side Up will all be worth the wait! We have two pieces of home-produced work in a somewhat transport-themed season: Lone Flyer, celebrating one of Hull’s greats, Amy Johnson; and The Railway Children which we have wanted to create for our Christmas audiences for a long time now. We cannot wait to see families back sharing what might be their first live theatre together for some time.

We are still doing everything we can to make you as safe as possible, with enhanced cleaning, recommending continued mask wearing and for those audiences taking their first tentative steps into larger groups, we have programmed some special socially distanced performances where we are committed to being at least 1m+ between parties. Throughout the closure period we all realised how much live theatre meant to us when we could no longer experience it, so please do read through the brochure, discover that must-see production and book for an hour or two where you can switch off and let your imagination take flight.

Mark Babych Artistic Director

Janthi Mills-Ward Executive Director

We also look forward to welcoming back Hull Comedy Festival and Hull Jazz Festival in November, meaning there’s plenty to look forward to over the coming months.

We are proud to be See It Safely approved by Society Of London Theatre & UK Theatre and have the Good To Go accreditation, so you can feel confident and safe knowing that we are COVID-secure and following the latest Government and performing arts guidelines.

Next year we are looking forward to celebrating 50 years of Hull Truck Theatre. We’re doing this by focusing on the thing that makes Hull Truck magic – the people. Without our supportive audiences, generous funders, talented artists, passionate participants and dedicated staff, this theatre wouldn’t have kept its place at the heart of Hull’s creative core for half a century. We’ll be taking a look back at the journey since 1972 to the present, but also looking to the future and asking, what will the next 50 years hold? How will Hull Truck Theatre continue to inspire future generations? We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an extraordinary birthday year, packed full of great work on our stages and opportunities to take part.

HULL TRUCK THEATRE PRESENTS

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN BY E NESBIT ADAPTED BY MIKE KENNY DIRECTED BY MARK BABYCH ALL ABOARD AS E NESBIT’S CLASSIC STORY STEAMS INTO HULL THIS CHRISTMAS! Join Bobby, Peter and Phyllis in this warm-hearted, uplifting tale of hope, friendship and family. With their Father gone, the family is forced to leave their comfortable home in London. Here in Yorkshire they experience a life of adventure by the railway, whilst struggling to make ends meet. Through the kindness and generosity of friends and neighbours they continue to have faith that it’ll all come right in the end. Mike Kenny (Cinderella & Sleeping Beauty) has revisited his award-winning adaptation to include the original songs that have become a much-loved part of a Hull Truck Theatre Christmas show. Directed by Mark Babych and from the team who brought you Oliver Twist and Peter Pan, the delightful original music, toe-tapping dance routines and breath-taking set and costumes guarantee a treat for all the family to enjoy. The Railway Children won an Olivier Award in 2011 and has been performed at the National Railway Museum York, Waterloo Station London, Roundhouse Park Toronto and Kings Cross Station London.

“As a director, it feels amazing to return to this play and bring it to the people of Hull. The Railway Children is such a classic tale, bringing with it a pinch of nostalgia for those who grew up with it and also sharing this wonderful story with a new generation of theatre-goers. Christmas is a special time for bringing together families and friends and it’s a pleasure to be able to share more theatrical magic at this time next year.” Mark Babych, Director

HARPY

Andy was in the middle of a UK Tour when theatres had to close due to lockdown – and the tour was called ‘Healing The Nation’ – so that title worked out well. The rewritten 2019/2020 tour now extended into 2021/2022 due to popular demand but also mainly lack of open theatres. And with negative powers of healing.

BY PHILIP MEEKS, STARRING SU POLLARD

Birdie’s a hoarder. The neighbours call her a harridan and a harpy, although most have never even met her. They see her hoard as a hazard for house prices. But it isn’t rubbish. It’s her life’s work and it exists because years ago something deeply cherished was stolen from her; Birdie’s not been able to give up anything since. She’ll do anything to get this priceless thing back. Anything at all. hulltruck.co.uk
