WELCOME We are excited to be kicking off the second half of our 50th anniversary season, when our programme shifts to looking to the future, whether that’s through long term friendships in Ladies Unleashed, Scrooge’s journey through past, present and future in A Christmas Carol, or a fresh voice exploring the relationships of women across three generations and the promise of new life in Mumsy. We are delighted to be working with Amanda Whittington on the third installment of the Ladies Trilogy, following the popular Hull Truck Theatre hits, Ladies Day and Ladies Down Under. In Ladies Unleashed the group of friends are reunited on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, as they face growing older and the next stage of their lives with typical humour, drama and some ghostly goings on. Christmas is always a favourite time of year at the theatre and we’re looking forward to welcoming families and friends to enjoy two magical shows. Jack, Mum and the Beanstalk gives a Hull Truck Theatre twist to the well-known fairytale and will be a great introduction to theatre for ages 3+. Our 2017 production of A Christmas Carol has been wowing audiences with two revivals at Leeds Playhouse, and a refreshed version returns under a new director, Sameena Hussain. Packed with singing, dancing and music, audiences of all ages from 5+ are guaranteed to enjoy a classic festive treat. The finale of our 50th anniversary season sees the talent of the future placed centre stage. Written by Hull’s own Lydia Marchant, Mumsy is a warm and moving comedy about mother-daughter relationships and the challenges of being a single parent. Developed through our Grow Artist Development programme, we can’t wait to see this brought to life on our main theatre. Visit page 10 for info about Baby Friendly performances as well. We’ve got our eyes on the future 50 and what this looks like for Hull Truck Theatre, with projects underway with local communities, young people and our Act III over 55s groups that we’re looking forward to sharing with you. For audiences, we’ve begun the Hull Truck Play Project, working with 4 local writers to explore new stories dug from the heart of our city. Keep an eye on our social media channels or sign up to receive our e-newsletters to find out more as things develop!

LADIES UNLEASHED WRITTEN BY AMANDA WHITTINGTON DIRECTED BY MARK BABYCH The Ladies are back! Pearl, Jan and Linda set off for a long-awaited break on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. It’s definitely not a hen do, as Linda keeps reminding them a week before her wedding. Linda wants a weekend of quiet contemplation but soon finds her best-laid plans derailed. When a surprise visitor turns up on, their retreat becomes a reunion and pretty soon, a riot. They haven’t seen Shelley for years but what’s changed? Quite a lot, they’ll discover. Cut off from the mainland, tensions rise with the tide. The island is restless too, with echoes of the past in the cold air. As the sky grows dark, the winds of change blow skeletons from closets. Past, present and future collide. As the dawn breaks, will the four friends see themselves in a new light? Following the smash-hits Ladies Day and Ladies Down Under, Amanda Whittington brings us the third in the Ladies Trilogy. Don’t miss this moving comedy about friendship, growing older and living for today.

“I’d resisted the urge to revisit the Ladies for too long. As soon as I started writing, it was like meeting old friends. Once again, they’re fish out of water - first the races, then Australia and now in the magical surroundings of Lindisfarne. Our audience will meet them as they are now, in a somewhat turbulent 24-hours on Holy Island. Prepare for laughter, secrets and let’s hope, a wonderful reunion.” Amanda Whittington, Playwright

HULL TRUCK THEATRE IN ASSOCIATION WITH LEEDS PLAYHOUSE PRESENT
A CHRISTMAS CAROL BASED ON THE NOVELLA BY CHARLES DICKENS ADAPTED BY DEBORAH MCANDREW DIRECTED BY SAMEENA HUSSAIN On a cold Christmas Eve, four spirits conspire to show Ebenezer Scrooge the error of his ways. His old business partner, Jacob Marley has returned from the dead to offer him a second chance, if he can change his mean and miserly behaviour. Nowhere are the effects of poverty more keenly felt than in the Cratchit family, especially by their youngest son, Tiny Tim. As Scrooge’s inspirational journey shows him both the hardship and love of those around him, he is reminded of his own powers of charity and kindness. This thrilling adaptation of Dicken’s classic Christmas ghost story, set in Hull, is a magical, festive treat for all the family. RECOMMENDED

Jean Toussaint all-star 4-tet
Songs for Sisters Brothers and Others Jean Toussaint – Saxophone; Jonathan Gee Piano; Mutale Chashi – Bass; Shane Forbes Drums We welcome back Jazz Messenger and Grammy award winning saxophonist Jean Toussaint after sellout gigs in 2016 and 2018 with his most ambitious and exciting work to date and an allstar band. Jean Toussaint first came to prominence when he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1982, after studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is one of the world’s leading jazz artists at the forefront of modern jazz. His new project Songs for Sisters Brothers and Others reflects on recent turbulent events.
Jean Toussaint says “Art used to say “it doesn’t matter how complex you want to play as long as you swing and play from the heart” then he’d cite the great John Coltrane as an example. I owe it all to the great Art Blakey and I’ll be a Jazz Messenger for life.”

We believe in the power of great theatre. Do you?
"As a Spotlight Partner, we receive the peace of mind that our investment not only helps people to express themselves and develop new talents, but also enables additional jobs in the arts sector.”
We believe in the power of theatre and creativity to change lives. That’s why we want to welcome the widest possible audience to enjoy our work. Every year we try to remove barriers that might prevent someone from coming to the theatre. “Each year Hull Truck Theatre is able to provide us with hundreds of tickets that we then give to children living in foster care and schools in areas of disadvantage. These children have never been to the theatre before and it’s an incredible opportunity for them. A person who visits the theatre as a child is twice as likely to return as an adult, so this programme really does give children the gift of theatre for life.” Natasha Banke, Director of Hull & East Yorkshire Children’s University We’re so grateful to all our donors and partners whose generosity and valuable support make this possible. For our Spotlight Partners a commitment to the community and great theatre makes good business sense.
