WELCOME

Throughout our 50th Anniversary season, we have been proud to produce a number of works that have explored our origins, our present and now. As we move into the New Year, we turn our focus to the future with the world premiere of Hull playwright Lydia Marchant’s brand new comedy Mumsy. Developed through our Grow artist development programme, Mumsy is a must-see for fans of programmes like Motherland as Lydia explores the highs and lows of mother-daughter relationships in a highly entertaining and moving comedy.

At Hull Truck Theatre we are excited to present a number of projects with a variety of co-producing partners both nationally and internationally. Anders Lustgarten’s gripping new play The City and The Town is presented in association with Matthew Linley creative projects and Swedish company Riksteatern, and we are thrilled to be working with our colleagues at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick on a joyous and theatrically thrilling production for all the family of the much loved Around The World in 80 Days.

With a half term treat of a well-loved children story The Tortoise and The Hare, and exciting new productions by the brilliant Middle Child, Northern Broadsides and the return of the ever popular Bouncers, there’s a huge amount to enjoy alongside some great music and comedy and a diverse programme of contemporary work in the Godber Studio to keep you entertained as we move through the winter into the much awaited summer months.

Thank you from all of us here at Hull Truck Theatre for your continued supportwe look forward to welcoming you.

HULL TRUCK THEATRE PRESENTS MUMSY

Sophie is going to be a third generation single Mum and she’s terrified. How will she afford to feed them both? Can she hold on to her job? What if she’s a crap Mum? Surely she can count on her own Mum and Nan to help…

Wrong! Rachel’s got used to having a life of her own and doesn’t fancy giving up pole class and Tinder to go back to changing nappies and no sleep. Having Sophie back home is really cramping her style. Meanwhile, after getting scouted to be an Annie Lennox impersonator on the P&O Ferries, her Nan’s having a three quarter life crisis of her own.

In a one-bed flat in Gyspyville, Hull, three women battle through the friendship, drama and love of mother-daughter relationships.

For fans of A Taste of Honey and Motherland, this warm comedy has been developed as part of Hull Truck Theatre’s Grow Artist Development programme.

“What a privilege to be directing this funny, warm, authentic new play – crammed into a one bed flat with rising bills and decreasing wages, three generations of women push at their circumstances (and sometimes each other) to let their dreams soar.”

Zoë Waterman, Director

YOUNG CREATORS PRESENT THE HOUSES ARE SINKING (AND THE ADULTS DON’T CARE)

“Why am I planning for the future when that future isn’t going to be there? No one knows what it is that’s terrorizing our home, causing all this to happen, but more importantly, not one grown-up seems to care.”

Nora’s house has disappeared. Its foundations have cracked as it plunged deep into the earth. And do you know what? It’s not the first house in town to sink either.

Join Nora and Donnie on their quest to uncover the town’s biggest secrets. Why our town? Why us? Trapped in a place where the future is uncertain and the present is bleak, how do the young stay optimistic?

Hull Truck Theatre’s Young Creators are a group of talented theatre-makers aged between 14 - 18 from across the city and region who come together to make bold, thought-provoking and contemporary theatre from scratch. Hull-based playwright and poet Josh Overton has written the play based on the opinions, ideas and voices of the group. His previous work includes Faustus and Dungeons & Dragons (The Unofficial Adventure).

QUALITY STREET

From the writer of Peter Pan, this delicious farce was such a sensation in its day that it gave its name to the UK’s most loved chocolates.

Phoebe Throssel runs a school for unruly children on Quality Street.

Ten years since a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of

disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets an older, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action.

She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon beguiles the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled, can she juggle both personas? Or will the deception scandalise the town and wreck any future with the man she loves?

Northern Broadsides revive their hit regency comedy, stirring in a good helping of Yorkshire wit from the retired workers of the Halifax factory where Quality Street have been proudly made since 1936. Think Bridgerton meets Inside the Factory.
