7.30pm, Matinees: 24 & 27 May, 2pm, Tickets £20 - £10

1874. Elizabeth Thompsons stuns the Royal Academy with her painting, Roll Call. Five years later, she falls two votes short of becoming the first woman elected to the academy.

In between, she must shoulder the hopes and dreams of women across the country, while fighting for her place at a table full of top hats, ties and mutton chop beards.

Twisting theatre, music hall and drag king cabaret, Modest is laced with punk spirit as it brings you a Victorian art scene superstar. Performed by a cast of actor-musicians, this farcical show will break your heart and start a revolution.

Modest is a collaboration between Hullbased Middle Child and artist-led Milk Presents, two award-winning companies, developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme.
