, ed snote THAT EARTHY FEELING All of the PR around living sustainably does seem to be having an effect. Architects are taking earth-friendly approaches to their work; designers are opting for eco-friendly materials for products and accessories; and the general public, like you and I, are putting some concerted effort into saving electricity and water, and recycling where we can. Our June issue is focused on sustainable living, and how the eco-trend can be adopted throughout the home. From the energy-efficient kitchen to the waterwise bathroom, and recycling versus upcycling – we’ve got it all covered. And we even have a special collection of articles focusing on what sustainable living really is, and how to incorporate it into your heating, flooring and everyday life. Our Earth is the only one we’ve got, so it’s our responsibility to take care of it and ensure that our families have a safe and beautiful place in which to live for generations to come.

love cooking, so I’d love to get an electric food slicer, to make my life easier. THE BEST THING ABOUT WINTER IS that, most of the time, I am

indoors with my favourite people – my family. WHOSE HOME WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT? Basetsana Kumalo’s. I believe I can learn a lot from her – she’s powerful and has managed to keep her private life private. I admire her for that. WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE COMFORT FOOD? Pizza, all the way. WHAT DO YOU FIND REALLY BEAUTIFUL? I find my precious two-year-old daughter beautiful; she’s the light of my life and my greatest gift. A QUOTE I LIVE BY: There are no secrets to success. It is the

HASMITA AMTHA EXPLORES SUSTAINABLE DESIGN TRENDS IN SOUTH AFRICA

G

reen living is a way of life today, and in South Africa it has been embraced, from the way our houses are being built to the way they are furnished. Consider these five sustainable design trends when you undertake a new build.

1

A ROOFTOP DELIGHT

A practice that has spread across the globe, living roofs are the use of roofs of a building for a garden. Planted over a waterproofing membrane, a root barrier, draining and irrigation systems, all of which make the living roof possible, rooftop gardens allow the roof to filter pollutants out of the air, while providing a habitat for local birdlife.

24 JUNE 2016

THE BEAUTY OF BAMBOO

Wooden floors are always a favourite, but bamboo is an eco-friendly alternative. Unlike most trees, bamboo grows quickly and is easy to harvest. Bamboo flooring is also more affordable, and comes in a range of colours and styles to suit one’s needs.

3

A NATURAL DIP

Mimicking the natural ecosystems producing chemical-free soft water, a wetland pool is a natural swimming pool where the water is filtered through a wetland to keep it clean and clear. In harmony with their natural surroundings, these pools attract animals, which can keep pests, such as mosquitoes and harmful bacteria, at bay.

4

KEEP IT LOCAL

Where does this product come from? How was it made? What is its impact on the environment and our society? These are questions more and more shoppers are asking before swiping their cards. In response, designers are creating pieces that are eco-friendly and support local communities. From furniture to cushions, you can find a wide variety of products to style up your home, all locally made with eco-friendly materials.

Where does this product come from? How was it made? What is its impact on the environment and our society

5

BUILDING BLOCKS

Timber, stone, mud brick, and clay are some of the building materials that are being used to create homes that get the green stamp of approval. Bamboo and marble are also trending. Bear in mind that materials need to be sustainably managed, recyclable, non-toxic, reusable and renewable.

ANDREW DOMINIC FURNITURE DESIGNER/MAKER

C

C

ape Town furniture designer/maker Andrew Dominic grew up on the coast of South Devon, England. After years working in the luxury yachting industry, he chose to follow his other passion, woodwork, and trained at David Savage’s respected furniture school in North Devon. After meeting his Johannesburg-born wife in the south of France, he moved to South Africa and established a furniture business that has a reputation for having an uncompromising dedication to quality, detail and authentic design.

Good-quality furniture takes time to make. I am well known for my signature Manu server and Draper kitchen stools. My signature range is a collection of limited-quantity pieces that best describes my design aesthetic. We find that all of our clients share an appreciation for the beauty and finer detailing found in handcrafted furniture. One of my most memorable achievements is cycling from the north coast of France to the south coast of Spain. My clients include leading South Africa interior design companies and entrepreneurs, wine estates and a few high-profile individuals.

My friends would describe me as “A good book, the plot becoming more intriguing the deeper into the story you delve”; “The last real craftsman”; “An uncomplicated nice guy”, “Secretly gregarious” (answers supplied by friends). I am happiest when I’m in the sea or with my two beautiful daughters. My favourite furniture designer is North American furniture maker, Sam Maloof. Every home needs a large table around which everything happens. In the next 10 years I hope to be living and working from my workshop on a farm in the countryside, with my furniture in homes around the world.

Consumers BEWARE of these unsafe products ›› There are more than 3000 electrical fires annually in South Africa and there are many more with unknown causes that could be electrical. Cases of electrocution are not widely publicized. ›› The products illustrated below and purchased in February & March 2016 are a tiny sample of a range of sub-standard, unsafe electrical products being distributed in South Africa on a large scale. ›› The problem also extends to safety devices such as circuit breakers and earth-leakage units that do not perform their function and endanger lives and property.

›› Such products do not comply with compulsory standards and are illegal. Distributing such products is a criminal act, yet unscrupulous suppliers are able to distribute them with apparent impunity. ›› Non-compliance is difficult to assess and unsuspecting customers are using unsafe products in their homes and in commercial and industrial buildings. ›› Some sub-standard products are distributed under different brand names and in packaging that obscures their identity. ›› Documents produced as authorisations to distribute products are not always reliable proof of compliance with regulations, as may be the case here.

Except for the AP-02 adaptor which has visual non-compliances, the SAFEhouse Association has had the electrical products depicted below tested by an accredited laboratory. They have been found to be non-compliant with SA regulations and are unsafe.

CONSEQUENCE

RISK TO USER

SANS 60227-5 and SANS 1574-1 Cable fail

Conductor resistance exceeds requirements.

Overheating and fire. With a high-resistance earth conductor, the earth leakage protection function may be compromised.

What to do? ………..some guidelines: • Purchase brands you know and can trust. • Ask your supplier to confirm compliance with safety regulations. • Be suspicious of prices that are substantially below those of other, similar products on offer. • Examine products for obvious signs of inferior design, materials or workmanship • Be suspicious of products and packaging that lack basic information such as Voltage, Amperage and, for instance, in the case of electrical

cable and wire, a description of the applications for which the product is suitable or not. • Look for markings such as the SABS mark – and try to authenticate this as the mark can be used fraudulently. • The “CE” mark is widely used but is NOT an indicator of independent certification of compliance with regulations. • Check with the SAFEhouse Association. It may have information to assist you.

SAFEhouse has identified a retailer of the abovementioned products, the “Checkout” chain of stores, in KwaZulu Natal. In 2015 the retailer was advised of these findings, but is still offering the products for sale.

SAFEhouse has attempted to make contact with the importer of the products but has had no response to the approach.

SAFEhouse has attempted to make contact with the retailer’s supplier, Delta Electrical, in order to share its findings, but has been unsuccessful.

SAFEhouse reports its findings to the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications and, where applicable, lodges complaints with the National Consumer Commission.

In our view, these products are dangerous and should be withdrawn from the market. Sold products should be recalled as users are at risk. SAFEhouse appeals to the importer, distributor and retailer of the products to make contact at the email address or telephone number below. SAFEhouse cautions sub-distributors, retail chains, hardware stores, electrical contractors and end-users. The South African SAFEhouse Association is an independent, registered, non-profit organization established by the electrical industry and committed to communicating with customers.

For more information contact: Pierre Nothard: Tel: 011 396 8140 | Email: pierren@safehousesa.co.za

www.safehousesa.co.za

As at 16/03/2016

The South African SAFEhouse Association has been established to combat the proliferation of dangerous electrical products and services by: • Making the market aware of the risks in using such products and services • Exposing sub-standard products and services • Persuading specifiers, suppliers and distribution channels not to recommend or to offer such products and services for sale

n deciding it was time for a change, this home owner sought out a new home and applied a fresh decor style that brought life and inspiration to the spaces Overall, the home exudes old Hollywood glam. Shaggy rugs bring warmth and a cosy feel, but it’s the reflective surfaces, floor-to-ceiling drapes, recessed ceilings, chandeliers and luxurious fabrics that are the punctuation marks in a sophisticated conversation between modern and classical styles. The introduction of natural wood accents grounds the home and adds a relaxed feel to the chic interiors. Over time, the home owner had collected a number of classicalstyle pieces, including sideboards, armchairs and a chaise longue in the main bedroom.

COUTTS CONSTRUCTION 082 445 8294

TOP: When designing a home, it is important to pay just as much attention to the exterior as the interior, and paving plays a significant role. This home specified modern paving in a sleek design, which was achieved with the use of the Urban Slimline marble paver from Bosun. Coutts Construction, a company that specialises in turnkey projects, from plans through to the finished product, worked closely with the home owner to achieve the layout and finishes that suited her lifestyle. Large windows lend an impressive feel to the front of the home, while ensuring privacy for the inhabitants.

CHAD-O-CHEF 011 794 3570 BESPOKE KITCHENS AND DESIGNS 082 440 4457

ABOVE RIGHT: Keeping the dining area cosy and warm, and making a stylish statement at the same time, is the Chad-O-Chef vent-free gas fireplace. The stainless steel, stone and ceramic materials perfectly complement the interiors, and the fireplace helps to demarcate areas of the home without closing them in.

RIGHT: The kitchen of this home was designed to be spacious, stylish, functional and a central meeting place for the family. Monocoat oak cabinetry doors, with Duco sprayed turned legs and cornices, provides ample storage and, paired with a quartz stone worktop, makes for a sleek and sophisticated kitchen design and layout.

Since she did not want to part with these, it fell to the interior designer to integrate them into a modern scheme. The solution was to have each piece refinished in black lacquer and reupholstered in vibrant fabrics. These items now make a real design statement and paired with the contemporary pieces, form a symbolic bridge between the home owner’s old life and new. This new life includes plenty of entertaining and family gatherings. Various seating and eating areas, the open-plan lounge, dining and bar areas lead out on to the patio, where views of the surrounding area offer privacy and solitude. High walls are forgone in favour of clear fencing, on the other side of which animals can often be seen grazing – despite the fact that the property is situated within a sprawling urban environment. The interior designer had free rein on the addition of modern furniture pieces and the overall look of the home, and the selected artworks play an important role. The pieces were commissioned from artist Isaac Fourie and purchased by the designer to showcase the potential of the home, but the home owner loved them and has kept them as permanent fixtures in the home alongside her own blackand-white photography. Other decorative design elements include the sliding door into the kitchen, featuring silhouetted trees, which mirror the trees outside the property that are silhouetted against the roller blinds on the windows. JUNE 2016 49

MICHAEL PRINSLOO DESIGNS 082 490 9662 The informal living room, flowing off the dining room, avoids the television being the centre of attention by creating a cosy conversation area that is welcoming and punctuated with fun, contemporary fabrics and family pictures. The different wood finishes of the floor, coffee table and TV console ensure that the living room feels relaxed and uncontrived, while the rug design and accents in the scatter cushions bring in elements of the outdoors. A clear ceiling with recessed lighting establishes the perfect ambience and allows for decorative elements in the room without creating a cluttered feel.

50 JUNE 2016

MICHAEL PRINSLOO DESIGNS 082 490 9662 The open-plan dining room and living area are demarcated through the use of recessed ceilings, dark and light walls, and glamorous chandeliers. The contemporary dining table and chairs in natural wood finishes and sleek modern fabric play off beautifully against the dark wood sideboard and mirror, creating a space that feels luxurious and sleek, yet comfortable. Michael Prinsloo Designs was given free rein when it came to the interior decor, and was simply asked to incorporate some of the home owners’ existing items, which, after a refurb, worked well to bring weight to the otherwise modern approach.

With Geberit, you don’t just enjoy the benefits of an extremely quiet, reliable and efficient system – you get a solution that is pleasing to all senses, too.

Classical-style items now make a real design statement, pairing with the contemporary pieces to form a symbolic bridge between the home owner’s old life and new This attention to detail carries through into the upper level of the home, with each space carefully considered – from seating areas on the landing and in the main bedroom to the individual colour schemes for each bedroom and bathroom.

THE ODD TABLE COMPANY 072 437 7487 As the owners wanted the kitchen to be the social hub of the home, they commissioned The Odd Table Company to create an island geared for communal living. An eclectic mix of finishes gives the double-storey home a rustic touch. To make the most of the farmstyle look, roan satin facebrick was specified. The Timbador design with its horizontal slatted-wood finish reminds one of a stable swing-door, which complements the home’s contemporary farmstyle aesthetic. Doorzone supplies both single and double-door garages. Customers can choose from steel and wood materials, with automation being an added functional option. owners’ love of understated style. Pairing sleek simplicity with classic appeal, it straddles the divide between architectural interest and a family-focused lifestyle. Unsurprisingly, the refreshed version of their home is filled with light-drenched spaces and a seamless integration between home and garden. The close-knit family of four loves spending quality time together outdoors. “We cycle together in the estate, and the boys also love playing ball games on the golf course,” says the owner. When the couple decided to give their Tuscan-style home a radical reboot, they had a contemporary, streamlined design in mind. “The wood and cladding give the house a unique character, and the exterior paint colours blend well with this aesthetic. We also replaced the old balustrades with stainless steel, to add to the modern look,” he explains. JUNE 2016 59

Once the architectural and aesthetic foundations were laid, it was time to tackle the interiors. Their design choices were informed by a focus on integrative living. “We wanted open-plan living areas with minimal changes to the existing structure. n the northern suburbs of Johannesburg is where you will find this family home, which was built to enjoy blue skies and greenery. The home owner’s love for the great outdoors led to a design that incorporates plenty of sunshine, and an indoor and outdoor flow. Large windows and doors allow the family to enjoy the beautiful views from various parts of the home, in addition to the sculptures in the garden, which add depth and character to the outdoor spaces. One of these sculptures, by a local artist, stands sentry over the pool, creating a dramatic impact as one approaches the entrance.

BELOW: Architect Tickey Klawansky interpreted and conceptualised the brief for a contemporary family home with a modern design that includes strong architectural lines, and encompasses all features and amenities to satisfy the client’s expectations. To achieve an open, light-filled environment, large windows and stacking doors were used, while still allowing the home owners to enjoy their privacy when needed. Care was taken to incorporate and maximise the beautiful views over the northern suburbs of Johannesburg that the property offered.

As much as the home enjoys a great deal of openness, not least as a result of a double-volume ceiling, it has the ability to offer privacy when needed through the use of curtains throughout the house. A neutral colour palette was employed, with pops of colour introduced to break the mould. The interior decorator was given free rein. The objective was to create a clean, simple and contemporary home that included a lot of warmth, to make the house feel like a home. they opted to invest in renewable energy, which would also have the potential to free them from unpredictable power cuts and shortages. While solar panels can often detract from the style of a home, in this case they are well integrated and, through the careful construction of a north-facing framework on the roof of the building, do not detract from the breathtaking views from the top-floor entertainment area. his active family of four likes nothing more than spending time outdoors, flyfishing, camping or entertaining friends at home. “We’re very earthy people. We like the simple things and definitely believe in a less-is-more approach to life. We were looking for a functional space that would reflect our personalities and approach to life,” says the owner. Their brief to the architect was to create an uncluttered, unfussy home with a pastel undertone. Most importantly, the owners wanted a warm, inviting home filled with light-

drenched open spaces. “We like our privacy, but at the same time we love to entertain. So our house had to merge these two elements,” says the owner; adding that they don’t have an affinity for super-modern, extravagant design. In terms of the interiors, a subtle earthy colour palette, roughly hewn wood and exposed red brick remind one of a charming countryside homestead, while dramatic focal walls in night shades add a touch of drama. “Our architect was wonderful; he did everything we asked for – and more,” she notes. TOP: A clean-lined, modernist aesthetic underpins this contemporary home in this golf and wildlife estate. The owners approached Orton Architects to do a complete home makeover and to turn the existing structure into a contemporary home featuring the latest materials, finishes and specifications. In line with the owners’ brief, Orton Architects combined subtle natural colours with bold steel, glass and naturally tactile timber accents. Thanks to an environmentally responsive, authentic and lifestyle-focused approach to architectural design, the modern home has a unique character.

The home is geared towards maximised living and is filled with personal touches. Thanks to a well-devised open-plan design, one space seamlessly flows into another. “The kitchen, lounge and entertainment area are interlinked, which is perfectly suited to our inclusive lifestyle,” says the owner. “Our kitchen is the heart of our home and is also a visual showpiece. As my husband loves cooking, we wanted everything to be modern, trendy and geared towards easy cooking. The centre island keeps everyone engaged. It’s where we touch base, have meals, chat and make plans for the future.” The couple loves to open up the stacking doors that divide the dining and decked pool area. “We love the integrated indoor/outdoor aspect of our home, which maximises our

link with our natural surrounds. As our kids are real water-babies, the pool is literally on our doorstep, so it’s easy to keep an eye on them.” As with their lifestyle, their approach to decorating was straightforward and unfussy. “We have a lot of antique furniture, carpets and paintings that we’ve collected over the years, so we used what we had (and love) to decorate the house,” she notes. Less is more indeed.

Known fondly by friends as the “little cathedral”, the main lounge and dining area sits beneath a 7,5m-high open roof structure, instantly adding character to this open-plan space. The feature apex is one of many striking additions that make this KwaZulu-Natal home unique. In the entrance, a beautifully patterned tiled floor is a bold and

creative gesture that sets the tone for the interior finishes. Careful not to skimp on the main elements, such as the floors and bathrooms, the owners set a limited budget for the decoration, which is where the creative juices began to flow. “Almost all of our furniture has been given to us over the years and tells some kind of story. Our dining room table’s legs were in my mom’s florist workshop for years, and before that in my grandpa’s shop in Pietermaritzburg,” the owner says.

Antique sideboards have been used as bathroom vanities and old wooden crates have been hung on walls to create shelving, a fun and practical addition to the kid’s bedroom. Recycling of various pieces has brought character to this new build, as well as happy memories for the family. SHIRLEY MAST DIRECTOR AND CO-OWNER, WOODBENDER

W

oodbender was inspired by a love of woodwork and a passion to explore the art of bending, and was started by Shirley Mast and her husband, Charles. The company has been operating for over 25 years, offering reliability, durability and design flexibility to suit varying applications, from high-traffic environments such as restaurants and hotels, right through to private homes. The solid bentwood furniture is beautiful and built to last, with the advantage of handcrafted quality that is consistently achieved over large production runs. “All of our products are made in ash timber, imported from North America, where the certified forests are so vast that they replenish themselves naturally,” she says. The family-run business makes a variety of furniture, but believes its niche is in chairs. “We realised there weren’t that many chair-makers,” says Shirley. “We had shop-owners and carpenters coming to us to make chairs for them. People who make bars and pubs prefer us to make the bar stools.” 116 JUNE 2016

Shirley manages the sales, marketing and finance departments, and works on the research and development for the business. Their unwavering commitment to product and people has enabled them to grow a sizable enterprise with a factory and two showrooms. “Our extended family has grown to a large, dedicated team, including the next generation of Masts who have joined the management team,” she says. What inspires you? Getting away from my desk and working out of the office. The best compliment I’ve ever received is every time we receive a client email thanking my team for the service they have received, and the exceptional quality of the product – it never gets old. The best thing about winter is curling up in a blanket with a good book and my cat Holly; although I’m a summer person through and through. I’m happy when I’m with my husband and children, outside on our patio with our dogs mingling around.

Serve a Side of efficiency

An energy-efficient kitchen will lower energy costs And protect the environment, writes EsthEr Moloi

june 2016 121

A simple guide to purchasing energy-efficient appliances: • First consider the areas in your home that will use a lot of electricity or fuel. Tasks such as cooking, dishwashing, and heating and cooling are known to consume the most energy in homes. • When shopping for appliances, consider the daily usage of the product. This will determine how much of the daily energy consumption in your home the appliance takes up, and help to guide you in choosing efficient alternatives. • Look for appliances with the correct energy rating. Aim for a rating of AAA or A+. Appliances such as your washing machine, dishwasher and fridge should be checked according to this rating. 122 june 2016

E

nergy efficiency is a reality most modern homes have to face. electricity costs are increasing, and the government has started regulating power consumption for household appliances. It is therefore vital for home owners to be more aware when purchasing such appliances. energy-efficient appliances will assist in lowering power and water-consumption costs. new legislation has made it easier for home owners to understand how the energy grading works, as these ratings are clearly visible on the label.

Energy-efficient appliances will assist in lowering power and water-consumption costs Here are a few considerations that will help to make each area of your kitchen more energy efficient.

Cooking Induction cooking has the advantage of speed and efficiency, when compared to conventional cooktops. Gas cooking allows for perfect heat distribution for your cookware, and saves you on energy costs. There are even ovens and slow-cooking devices that use either less electricity or solar energy. The following day-to-day adjustments can also aid in lowering energy consumption while cooking: • Cover your pots and pans when you are cooking, as this will increase the temperature so that you can turn down your stove while cooking. This will also help to cook food quicker. • Inexpensive pots and pans can hamper heat distribution, which will result in more energy being used to cook food. It is better to invest in quality cookware that works with your cooktop. • Cutting your food into smaller pieces will mean that the food will cook more quickly, which will reduce the cooking time.

june 2016 123

Dishwashing Contrary to popular belief, a dishwasher will actually help you to conserve water and energy. A dishwasher uses 15 to 22 litres of water (some can use as little as nine litres), whereas a traditional basin has the average consumption of 20 to 30 litres of water. To keep your dishwasher efficient, consider the following: • Select the economy or eco programme, as this uses less power and electricity. • Wait until the dishwasher is completely full before you start the washing cycle. • use a quality detergent that will clean your dishes effectively the first time.

heating/cooling systems

For air-conditioning systems, be cognisant of the following: • ensure that your air-conditioning system is equipped with an inverter compressor rather than an on-and-off compressor. This is because the inverter compressor never shuts off; it regulates energy consumption. • Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable for warmth in winter and coolness in summer. • Clean or replace the filters as recommended in the owner’s manual. Water Ways It makes sense to be water wIse In the bathroom, says Janine Jorgensen

W

hile we can look to alternative sources of power when it comes to a shortage of electricity, water is something we cannot live without. With drought and other strains on water delivery systems, it therefore makes sense to be economical with this vital resource. One of the best places to start is at home, in the bathroom.

TIP:

STAMP OF APPROVAL When buying products for the bathroom, look for the Water Efficiency Label (Well), which is an international standard that indicates how efficient an item is in terms of water and energy.

Many of the latest taps have been designed to be more economical with water by incorporating a flowlimiting function. One technology being employed is laminar flow, which produces parallel streams of water rather than a big gush, to reduce the amount of water coming out of the tap. Another device for taps is an aerator, which decreases the flow of water but maintains the pressure with air. A sensor tap, which turns on automatically when it senses an object, can also be economical for the basin.

SAVING WATER IN THE SHOWER Although showers already have the benefit of using less water than baths, they can reduce wastage in other ways. Changing the showerhead to one that is water saving can be a simple and effective way to cut down on the amount of water used. These types of fixtures can involve aeration and/or a flow restrictor to reduce water but not pressure. Use a timer to ensure you’re not spending too long in the shower (some of the latest products even include a pause feature to stop the flow while washing your hair), and try not to run the shower before you get in – the latest shower systems that allow you to set a preferred temperature are ideal for this. 134 JUNE 2016

• Check if your

showerhead is emitting too much water Place a two-litre pot in the shower. Turn the shower on. If the pot fills up in less than 20 seconds, consider a more efficient showerhead.

GREY MATTERS Greywater systems are becoming more common in homes as a way to save water. These systems recycle the wastewater from a sink or bath for other uses, from flushing the toilet to irrigating the garden. Installation should be done by an expert, and is easier for new builds rather than adapting existing plumbing.

TOP TIPS SAVING WATER IN THE BATH Baths are viewed as not very economical with water, but for those who do love a long soak in the tub, install a small bath, which will have a low-filling volume, minimising water consumption. A new innovation is manufacturing baths from materials that maintain the water temperature, so the bath doesn’t get cold, getting rid of the need to top up, and use more, hot water. Steel and limestone baths retain the heat for longer.

GEBERIT TIPS FOR SAVING WATER

SAVING WATER IN THE TOILET

Install flow restrictors in your taps, showers and kitchen mixers to reduce the amount of water that comes out.

With thanks to Duravit, Ferreiras, Geberit Southern Africa, Hansgrohe, Kohler, Lifestyle Ceramics and Water Wise

136 JUNE 2016

Place a bucket in your shower to collect the excess water while you’re waiting for your desired temperature. Use this water for your plants and garden.

Don’t leave the tap running unnecessarily – for example, when brushing your teeth or even washing your hair in the shower. Reduce the amount of water when flushing your toilet by installing a 3/6-litre dual-flush system. Geberit has a variety of water-saving flushing systems for your toilet, whether you have a concealed cistern or a close-coupled toilet suite.

Picture: ©iStock.com/Drew Hadley

Toilets use the most water in the bathroom. Newer toilets offer a function to lower the number of litres needed to flush. A common way to decrease water while maintaining effectiveness is a dual-flush mechanism, with two flush options: one for solid waste and the other for liquid waste, which uses less water. A trick to reduce the amount of water per flush is to place a 500ml bottle filled with water in the cistern. Other water-saving developments for toilets include a siphon flush and sanitation by UV light.

Fix any leaks or dripping taps immediately, as this can save litres of water in the long run.

Creating new items from old has positive eCologiCal and eConomiC impliCations, says Marianne Mcdonald

june 2016 141

Furniture designers use upcycling to create one-of-a-kind pieces that are well made, beautiful and bring a unique look to your home

I

n the words of sustainable food advocate Anna Lappé: “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” This idea lies at the heart of upcycling.

THE HISTORY While the concept of upcycling has been around for centuries, especially in developing countries where resources are scarce, the term was coined in 1994 by the owner of a German technology company. Since then, upcycling has been used in both the industry and the creative fields to save money, increase greening initiatives, and to make social and political commentary.

142 JUNE 2016

The idea even extended to New York City’s fashion scene in 2004, when underground fashion designers used “trashion”, or clothing made from discarded materials, and even rubbish, to make social commentary. The more recent interest in upcycling in the developed world has been influenced by people’s interest in eco-friendly solutions, sustainability, innovation and having a close relationship with smaller manufacturers.

Upcycling rarely uses mechanical means to completely break down an object, making it more ecologically friendly

UPCYCLING VS RECYCLING

Pictures: Recreate, Trouve and ©iStock.com/kinemero/marugod83

The main difference between recycling and upcycling is that recycling breaks down the original item, which is then reformed into items of a lesser value. Upcycling, on the other hand, has fewer mechanical processes, and the end item is of a higher value than the individual parts from which it was created. Upcycling rarely uses mechanical means to completely break down an object, making it more ecologically friendly.

UPCYCLING IN THE REAL WORLD One of the best examples of upcycling can be found at an orchestra in Paraguay – the instruments are all constructed from the trash found in the massive landfills around the town of Cateura.

JUNE 2016 143

Old suitcases placed on a trestle make for beautiful bedside tables, and offer storage space too Furniture designers use upcycling to create one-ofa-kind pieces that are well made, beautiful and bring a unique look to your home. Strategically placed upcycled items will add personality to your space that just cannot be achieved with mass-produced products. • Old suitcases placed on a trestle make for beautiful bedside tables, and offer storage space too. The same suitcases opened up, stuffed and upholstered, are original seating options for any area of the home. • One of the most popular items to upcycle are palettes. They are cheap, easy to work with and can be configured into various shapes. From bed bases to outdoor furniture and even desk workspaces, these handy wooden contraptions used to transport goods are making an appearance in stylish homes around the world. • Glass is one of the prettiest items to use in upcycling projects – from storage containers to lamps and planters. • An easy way to take on an upcycling project yourself is to breathe new life into your existing furniture by reupholstering or painting. If you have material and paint left over from another project, or can get hold of some offcuts and samples, your resources and materials are free and you’ll be saving items from ending up in the landfill. • If you’re not too enthusiastic about doing it yourself, there are various design companies in South Africa that are creating jobs through this concept. Customers receive locally made, high-quality goods at a reasonable price, while the makers are rewarded with maximum profitability. With thanks to Recreate, Trouve and Vamp

HANG IN THERE We love Opus Studio’s Monstera deliciosa, Hoya carnosa, palm and fern kokedamas. Often called the poor-man’s bonsai in Japan, kokedama literally means moss (koke) ball (dama). It consists of a small ball of soil covered with organic material such as mosses, grass and flowers, which are mixed and arranged to form a hanging garden. Opusstudio.co.za

BROMELIAD BEAUTY Guzamanias are ideal for adding a splash of greenery to your home, plus they help to clean the air of pollutants. These tropical plants are part of the bromeliad family and have strappy, shiny green leaves that rise from a deep central cup. A light daily misting will keep them looking their best. Pour water in the central cup of the plant and replace frequently to keep it from rotting. Lifeisagarden.co.za

TOP TIPS FOR WINTER GARDENING

Blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors with Woodenways’ Taste by 4 Seasons patio furniture. The Rimini Relax chair is ideal for stealing some me-time, while the Vincenza 2.5-seater bench is a must-have for entertaining friends. Make the most of your winter patio by adding a few cosy throws and adding an outdoor heater. Woodenways.co.za

COLOUR ME PRETTY Add some winter colour to your borders with the all-new Penstemon hartwegii Cha Cha and Arabesque. Cha Cha is more compact and hardy than its predecessors; Arabesque is a little larger and offers the look of a perennial, with the ease of an annual. They thrive in hot, sunny conditions and look best planted in groups.

DISTINCTIVE GARDENS OFFERS ADVICE ON HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR GARDEN DURING WINTER: ●

Keeping garden covers handy would be wise this time of year, as the first winter frost can be expected to fall, and water your gardens in the morning to allow foliage to dry before nightfall. If you have Iceland poppies, pansies and violas in your garden, try to water them during the day in areas that experience frost, and feed them liquid fertiliser twice a month to keep up performance. This month, pruning of fruit trees is important. When pruning, you not only shape the tree for the summer months to come, but at the same time you are removing dead branches that may cause pest infestation. When pruning your fruit tree, ensure you remove dead wood and water shoots; this will allow for easier shaping of the fruit tree. Set your automated irrigation systems to go on between 5am and 6am, as this waters down the severity of frost. Remember, irrigation systems are far more efficient than hand-watering.

T

here’s no doubt that you’ve heard the term “sustainable living”, but what does it really mean, and what impact is it having on how we design, and live in, our homes? In simple terms, sustainable living means meeting our needs in the present without compromising the long-term availability of the natural resources that sustain our way of life. It involves taking no more than the environment can supply and renew, living in balance with nature, and being aware of how your actions (from buying products to throwing away waste) affect the environment.

hoW is sustainable thinking being implemented in homes? A sustainable home uses few non-renewable resources, is energy efficient and causes little or no damage to its environment. “The national Building Regulations have made sustainable thinking in architecture mandatory,” says Chen Sagnelli of Sagnelli Associate Architects. Along with solar power, “building orientation, window openings, natural ventilation, natural vegetation, building skins and atriums are feature aspects in creating buildings that can sustain themselves”, adds Francois Marais of Francois Marais Architects. Other sustainable solutions to implement at home include greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting. When it comes to building, materials should be environmentally friendly, and be reused and recycled where possible, with new technologies, such as plaster with thermal properties, also providing opportunities to being more resourceful with home design. “It is important that, when choosing an architect and proceeding with the initial design of your home, you consider going green from the start,” says Katie Truscott of Greenleaf Alternative Solutions.

Sustainable solutions to implement at home include greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting What are the cost implications of a sustainable design? While the initial outlay to make a home sustainable may seem high, in the long term it will be less costly, not only for bills, but also on the environment. “With ever-developing technologies and an increasing need for sustainability, there are more and more products on the market that are becoming affordable, allowing green design to form part of the residential market,” points out Francois. lot of energy is used in keeping the home warm in winter and cool in summer – data suggests 54% of the total energy bill in most homes can be attributed to this. As the winter chills are upon us, it is good to know that there are various avenues that can be explored to keep the home warm the eco way. Good insulation in the home will go a long way towards lowering energy costs. A home that is not well insulated can lose as much as 40% of its heat through the roof and ceiling, and a further 35% through the walls and floors. north-facing homes have the benefit of being exposed to light and heat from the sun, which means the home will benefit from lower energy costs from heating and cooling. It is also comforting to know that most insulation can be environmentally friendly too.

Large windows and skylights allow the home to enjoy plenty of sunshine, which also means the home gets that much-needed natural warmth When looking at insulating your home, the following factors should be taken into consideration.

Walls and floors Building materials that come from a renewable or sustainable source will ensure that your home is eco friendly. There are environmentally-friendly alternatives for everything, from roofing to paints. natural materials such as stone, thatch, bamboo, aluminium and clay have gained popularity as not only do they offer a striking aesthetic in the home, they do a great job of keeping the home warm too.

Large windows and skylights allow the home to enjoy plenty of sunshine, which also means the home gets that much-needed natural warmth. As Pieter Malherbe of Teva Windows notes: “uPVC windows tend to have higher insulation properties than other windows, as they can retain the heat that is generally lost by standard windows. This is because the double-glazing in these windows doubles the thermal resistance. The air pockets created between the two glass panes provide an insulating barrier that keeps the exterior heat or cold outside, while regulating the interior temperature. uPVC windows are also made from natural resources. In addition, lined curtains will help to retain heat in winter. 162 june 2016

SHUTTERS Shutters make for great thermal insulators, as they provide an extra layer of warmth. “Their adjustable louvres allow ventilation and light control, while limiting the heat loss through windows and doors in winter and heat gain in summer,” notes Karina Palmer of American Shutters. Aluminium shutters provide an attractive weather barrier, and offer added security. Briggie Kirchmann of Plantation Shutters concludes “Aluminium security shutters can also be used to enclose a patio, allowing the patio to be heated and used during the cold winter months”. t’s great to see that sustainability is being factored into all areas of the home, including flooring. In recent times we have seen the progress many flooring companies are making in investing in cleaner manufacturing initiatives, such as sourcing environmentally-friendly and recycled raw materials. The trend that sees a return to more natural products is also evident in the replication of wood patterns and grains on other materials such as porcelain tiles, laminate flooring and vinyl. As Bernd de Smedt of Van Dyck notes: “Thanks to technology, carpets, laminates, luxury vinyl tiles and even artificial grass are becoming more environmentally friendly as new developments in yarns and fibres, and the increased use of recycled content are taking over.

For you to consider...

Pictures: Cemcrete and Finfloor SA

When choosing the right flooring for your home, you should keep the following in mind: • What type of activity will be taking place in that area and how much moisture will be present in that environment? This will determine the type of material that should be used on the floor. • How much traffic do you anticipate in that area? This will determine how durable the flooring should be and what amount of traffic or pressure the flooring will be able to withstand. • Do you have children, or pets? This will determine the amount of maintenance the flooring will need once installed. • How much will it cost? You can often expect hidden costs when it comes to the installation of flooring. You will also need to verify how long the particular flooring option will last and if it would ever need to be replaced. • Will your chosen flooring fit in with the current style of your home? It is best to choose an option that will not date.

june 2016 171

By following the cleaning and maintenance guide for your flooring carefully, you can preserve and even extend the lifespan of the flooring. It is a good idea to look into biodegradable products and avoid harsh chemicals as cleaning agents, as they will complete the eco circle. Simply sweeping away dirt and debris daily will go a long way towards preserving your floors. Attaching felt pads to heavy furniture that is moved frequently will also keep your floors in tip-top condition. Q With thanks to Cemcrete, Finfloor SA, Italcotto and Van Dyck

Some ideaS Here are some options for flooring that have less of a negative impact on the environment.

laminate flooring An eco-friendly alternative to solid wood flooring, laminate flooring can be manufactured using raw materials from renewable resources, where wood waste is used to create the substrate. The design layer uses an innovative technical process that replicates the grain of original timber.

Vinyl tile flooring Certain companies use materials that are environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable. Vinyl tiles are often the easiest tiles to install and maintain. They come in a vast array of patterns and finishes.

ConCrete flooring Concrete does not deplete natural resources and requires less energy in manufacture than other floor types. It is good for indoor air quality, too, because it inhibits mould, mildew and odours. It is recyclable and comes in various finishes, including matt, gloss and polished.

Carpet tileS The demand for eco-friendly carpets is growing. natural fibres and recycled rubber are used to make certain carpet tiles. 172 june 2016

ECO TIPS

_ EARTH CONSCIOUS EFFORT SIMPLE ACTIONS AT HOME CAN PLAY THEIR PART IN CONSERVING THE PLANET. JANINE JORGENSEN PROVIDES THESE 10 TIPS

1

CHANGE YOUR LIGHTING

Switch your traditional incandescent bulbs to CFL or LED lighting to reduce your demand on energy resources. These lights are low in energy consumption and are long-lasting, limiting their space in landfills. Other ways to save on electricity with lighting is to use dimmer switches, incorporate a timer, particularly for exterior fittings, install occupancy sensors and consider solar lighting in areas such as the garden.

2 3

UNPLUG DEVICES

Most electronic devices still draw electricity even when they are turned off. Simply unplug them when they are not in use, which saves energy and money.

CHOOSE ENERGY_EFFICIENT APPLIANCES

Look for household appliances that have low water and electricity consumption. For washing machines, this can be indicated by the EU energy label of an A rating, with the highest rating being A++ and the lowest, G. Also wait until you have a full load of laundry to wash and turn down the temperature by a degree or two to save energy.

4

Recycle

Separate waste items to be recycled and keep a compost bin in the kitchen to keep your landfill load low. For glass, visit theglassrecyclingcompany.co.za to locate a glass bank in your area. use rechargeable batteries where possible, as not only do these last longer if you invest in a charger, but they can be recycled too.

5

Go natuRal

Investigate ways to clean your home with natural ingredients. This reduces the amount of chemicals being added to the water system, and the amount of packaging being made for detergents.

Investigate ways to clean your home with natural ingredients When shoppinG: • Do your research. Buy from retailers that have sustainable practices and are environmentally friendly. • Go local. Support businesses in your area, which keep your community employed, and choose local products over imported where possible, to prevent emissions from transporting goods long distances. • Minimise your use of packaging. If it’s unavoidable, check to see if it can be recycled. And use that “bag for life” – keep it at hand, so it’s ready when you reach the till. • Buy less. Try to limit your purchases to only what you need and will use. Start small with cutting out one thing a month. The more stuff we accumulate, the more goes into landfills and other waste zones. • Read the label. See where items come from and how they have been produced. For example, wood products should be from a sustainable source, approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

6

CLEAN YOUR FRIDGE REGULARLY

Pictures: Maison et Objet, Miele, Sagnelli, The Lighting Warehouse, Yuppiechef and ©iStock.com/enis izgi/JPC-PROD

When the coils at the back of the fridge are dirty, they can’t distribute heat evenly from the inside to the outside of the appliance, and the fridge has to use more energy to keep cold. Clean coils are not the only way have an energy-efficient fridge; ensure the freezer is free from frost and place the fridge away from any heat source, such as an oven or dishwasher.

7 8

WRAP YOUR GEYSER UP

A geyser can be a guzzler of a household’s energy. Install a timer to avoid heating water unnecessarily, and fit a geyser blanket to prevent heat loss.

COVER YOUR POOL

A pool cover will stop water from evaporating and therefore reduce the need to refill it. A cover will also keep the pool cleaner, which means you won’t need to run pumps and filters more frequently, thus saving energy.

9

PLANT A TREE

Not only are trees good for purifying the air and contributing to a greener environment, but they can help to reduce cooling bills at home when planted in strategic positions, to shade hot areas of your house.

10

INSULATE YOUR HOME

Proper insulation will save energy and cut down costs when it comes to heating and cooling your home. Heat can escape through the roof, so install a layer of insulation there. Consider glazing for windows, and choose treatments, such as blinds and shutters, that will block out the sun in summer and retain warmth in winter. Draught-proof your house by sealing cracks in windows, doors and walls. burning issue

Appetite for green Kerry Johnston considers sustainable living from a cost perspective, and explores the long_term savings versus the short_term expense of going green in the home

G

oing green” is everywhere nowadays – in the news, in our politics, on our roads, in our homes, and even in our technology. There’s no denying that every single thing we do, every day, has an impact on the planet. The good news is that you have the power to control most of your choices and therefore reduce the effect of your footprint (in ways both big and small), starting at home…

What constitutes a green home? In a nutshell, a green home is a type of household that is designed, remodelled and/or operated to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, while also focusing on the efficient use of energy and water, using sustainable, recycled or used materials, and producing less waste. Buying more energy-efficient appliances and using specific building materials that are more efficient in keeping both cool and heated air inside the home also fall under all things “green”.

hoW easy is it to go green? According to the Green Building Council SA (GBCSA), “greening” can be applied in a number of ways and to varying degrees. Through its My Green Home initiative, the GBCSA has identified “no-Cost”, “Low-Cost” and “Invest-to-Save” implementations, depending on the “green appetite” of the home owner. No-Cost implementations and behaviour changes include factors such as reducing the ironing pile by ironing only essentials and not bedding, pyjamas, etc; turning your geyser down to between 55°C and 60°C (especially in summer); limiting the running time of your pool pump; switching to a cold wash for laundry; and taking shorter showers. Low-Cost (under R1 000) implementations include replacing your bulbs with LeDs; installing low-flow showerheads; heating areas of the home only where needed; and installing motion-sensor lights outside for security. These are all obvious starting points when greening a house, with savings that will cover your costs quickly. Invest-to-Save implementations include installing a solar water heater (or considering a heat pump for hot water); buying a more efficient pool pump; installing adequate ceiling insulation; using gas for cooking; and choosing a more energy-efficient refrigerator. Some of these greening options might cost more upfront, but they will save you money over time. 182 June 2016

Such expenditures should be seen as an investment – in both a future of lower utility costs, and a healthier environment. Q

Long_term savings vs short_term expense _ a case study In 2014, the ngewana family committed to creating a greener home and lifestyle by accepting the My Green Home challenge. This family of five had a domestic helper that worked full-time, from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings, helping with the cleaning, washing, ironing and cooking, and they lived in a double-storey house with five bedrooms, three lounges, a dining room, a kitchen and two bathrooms. There was a swimming pool and some outbuildings (laundry, storeroom and flat with a bathroom), as well as a double garage. The erf size was about 880m². They attempted to cut electricity consumption by 40%, water by 20% and waste to landfill by 75%. Some were sceptical that such drastic cuts would be possible, but the ngewana family demolished every one of those targets by a good margin. no-Cost changes were an obvious starting point, and these allowed the ngewana family to save 32% on electricity and 26% on water before a cent had been spent upgrading their home. ultimately, electricity at the home fell by 53%, water use by 44% and waste to landfill by 81%, setting a course for the ngewanas to spend about R18 000 less per year on utilities than they would have with their former lifestyle.

hoW to measure your sWitch to green For those who want to approach the greening process methodically, by measuring results, the first step is to establish a baseline. Ideally, gather a full year’s worth of records to calculate annual or, even better, seasonal average daily or monthly consumption of electricity in kilowatt hours and water in kilolitres. An eco-audit* can help to identify where most of that power and water is being used, and help you to set goals for reduction. * Visit Mygreenhome.org.za for ways to do your own home eco audit.

out&about

Exploring the real gems around the country _ BY JANINE JORGENSEN SAVE THE DATE: 1 _ 5 JUNE

A MODERN OUTLOOK If you’re a fan of the current trend of 20th Century modern furniture, it may be worth your while to visit The New Modernist in Cape Town’s Urban Hub. The store offers collectible items, reproduction pieces, lighting and accessories to recreate that retro style at home. Emma De Crespigny, who worked as an art collector and dealer in New York, and owns C20 Galerie in Woodstock, curates the collection. Thenewmodernist.com

Kamers returns to Cape Town, at the Castle of Good Hope from 1 to 5 June. As a retail platform for South Africa’s creative “makers”, it offers the opportunity to shop for innovative craft, design and food. Look out for the Young Entrepreneurs, young, local talents who have been given a kickstart at the show. Kamersvol.com

CHILD STARS Dovetail, a new studio based in Johannesburg, creates furniture and decor accessories especially for kids. Mums Shelley James and Rochelle Derksen, both architects, founded the business after they felt there was a gap in the market for playful, welldesigned children’s furniture, which was affordable at the same time. The products, mostly made of wood, by hand, are simple, yet fun, and remain suitable as kids get older. Dvtl.co.za Don’t miss Southern Guild’s latest exhibition, Graphica, which runs until 1 July at the Woodstock gallery. The pieces feature a strong African aesthetic, with “dynamic silhouettes and exquisite surface detailing”, explains Southern Guild founder Trevyn McGowan, by designers and artists such as David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Porky Hefer and Xandre Kriel, among others.
