This 10-block walk passes by the Virginia Quilt Museum, Explore More Discovery Museum, Harrisonburg Farmers Market, Oasis Fine Art & Craft, Valley Turnpike Museum, and parts of two National Historic Districts. In Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the surrounding areas, there are eight designated National Historic Districts: Harrisonburg Downtown and Harrisonburg Old Town Historic Districts, Port Republic, Bridgewater, Dayton, Massanetta Springs, Singers Glen, and the Skyline Drive Historic Districts. These designated areas are hot spots for self-guided walking tours. Uptown is filled with national favorites so whatever you came for, you’ll leave with that and more! If you’re looking for an eco-friendly vacation, you’ll find it in Harrisonburg. Our city was the first in Virginia to offer guests access to an electric car charge! The Area’s Best... Commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the Shenandoah Valley played significant roles during the American Civil War. Harrisonburg was at the crossroads of two major highways: the Valley Turnpike (modern-day Rt. 11) and the Rockingham Turnpike (modern-day Rt. 33). The city was also located about 25 miles north of a huge Confederate rail and supply center in Staunton. At the time, Rockingham County was
one of the most prosperous agricultural counties in the nation. The region including Harrisonburg and Rockingham County was known as the “The Breadbasket of the Confederacy” resulting in a prime location for the struggle between Union and Confederate
