An Agricultural Experience Museum Based on Continous Folded Plate Typology Type: Academic Group Work(Group Member) Collaborators: Yaxi Liu, Chen Liang Contribution: 30% Concept, 30% Model, 30% Plan, 80% Effect picture Time: 6th Semester 2017.03-2017.06 Tutor: Cui Liu Email:cui_liu@zju.edu.cn Location: Yangjiapailou, Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Discription: Considering residents in big cities of China live in a concrete jungle and bear heavy work stress, so we design a building in urban village for citizens to have a taste of agriculture lifestyle with various activities, including vegetable picking, tea tasting, cooking, farming, and sightseeing. In that way, citizens can enjoy a moment of rural peace without driving a long distance and have a wonderful weekend with family. The concept of architectural form ------ folded plate is inspired by typography and mountain and eventually combined with the environment. 1

Yang's Village which is left out in the process of rapid urbanization is located in the central part of the city. The mountain around it could act as the connection between the National Scenic Area --- Xixi Wetland and the famous tour attraction --- West Lake. In spite of the good location, residents here make little use of their natural resources to attract tourists. Thus, this village became the missing point in the urban tourism route planning. The site we choose is between the major tea mountain in the village and the river, thus we could make full use of these natural resources to develop leisure agriculture as the new industry to combine the village with tourism.

SITE

Indoor Semi-Outdoor Outdoor

According to the existing resources and people's needs, we accomodate tourism, catering, tea industry and farming as our main functions. And four basic forms were chosen in terms of the ratio between indoor and outdoor activities of these four functions. 2

AGGREGATION ADAPTED TO MOUNTAIN The combination on section offers new interior and exterior spatial qualities. The diversity of singular connection typology are extracted from the mountain shape and being aggregated as new entity that reflects certain programs that meet the demands from both tourists and local. Thoughts on how the architecture could combine with nature are represented on playing with its transition from exteriority to interiority.

Set the continuous folded plate from river side to the mountain, the view is limited.

Rotate the lowest part and the top part of the building to parellel the scenery of river side and the mountain accordingly.

Tilt the main enclosure wall of each combination to make the building more natural.

A Second-hand Bookstore with Multiple Functions Type: Academic Individual Work Time: 5th Semester 2016.09-2016.11 Tutor: Qiu zhi Email: qiuzhi0710@zju.edu.cn Location: Xihu District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Discription: The second-hand bookstore was transformed from the old faculty activity center near Zhejiang University. The renovation of the building and the resale of books both are the process of getting a new life. And the stock and demand for secondhand books are enormous due to the surrounding university campuses and teacher dormitories. This second-hand bookstore has comprehensive functions to satisfy the need for purchase, reading, scouring, and sharing of students, children, seniors, and social people. In terms of functional layout, the characteristics of reading behavior of different groups of people are the most critical considerations. 6

REBORN OF BOOKS AND ARCHITECTURE The original building is a faculty and staff activity center, located in the middle of the Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University and the teacher's dormitory area. It was built in the 1990s, interior space and structure are very conservative. In the transformation process, it takes on a new role, attracting new people to inspire more vitality. For books, the sale of second-hand books also means the newborn of the book. Because it will meet new owners, who treat this book with their unique attitude, then the book will record a fantasy story.

Artist Community Using Three Planning Strategies Type: Academic Individual Work Time: 7th Semester 2017.09-2017.11 Tutor: Francisco F. Longoria Email:longoria.aur@gmail.com Location: Yuhang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Discription: In the center of the newly planned Future Sci-tech City in Hangzhou, an artist community has been designed to meet the needs of the surrounding artists, as well as to provide business people in this district with a way of entertainment after work. The artist is divided into 3 groups --- painters, sculptors and musicians. According to the characteristics of the land itself and the production needs of different artists, on the basis of the grid, the planning strategies of translation, integration and rotation are adopted respectively. And venues for artists to perform and exhibit are also arranged around. 10

DIALOGUE BETWEEN OFFICE WORKERS AND ARTISTS Due to Hangzhou's geographical location advantage and strong entrepreneurial atmosphere, Yuhang District in the west of Hangzhou is planned as a Future Sci-tech City. However, during the rapid development of commerce, the living space of original residents is squeezed, and the cultural facilities needed for business district are also lacking. Therefore, an artist community is put to increase the living space of artists among the original residents, and at the same time to serve the emerging sci-tech city.

Collaborators: Yu Ka Long Keith (Phase 1)

Discription: The demand for affordable housing is an emerging crisis that exists as a problem both in the developed world and in developing regions. There are many extremely dense and dangerous old houses and villages in the city of Jakarta. Through the assembly test and exploration of metal material in the first phase, and the field visit to the Kampumg Cikini in Jakarta in the second phase, a growable structural system logic was explored to respond to the poors' previous, present, and future demands for affordable housing. 27

Movement Translation + 1:1 Public Interactive Installation at Sai Wan Pier Type: Academic Group Work Collaborators: Yutong Sun, Mei Yang Contribution: 30% Concept, 30% Model, 70% Structure, 50% Video, 25% Plan & Section Time: 2020.09-2020.12 Tutor: Sony Devabhaktuni, Roberto Requejo-Belette Location: Hong Kong

Discription: This is a process of exploring and translating the relationship between space, human body, and movement. After six weeks of observing and documenting the public space of Chater Road in Central, we designed and fabricated the exhibition "room" to show the influence of crowd, weather, time, and date on the public realm with drawings and films. We also tried to translate the movement in Chater Road to Sai Wan Pier by making a kit of 1:1 wooden installation, a spiral process to develop our structure through multiple choreographies and filmings. 32

PHASE 3 ON-SITE EXPERIMENT

On-site Experiment 1 - Rotate Axis and Space in-between

Use on-site experiment at Sai Wan Pier and performance to test our ideas and learn from it, which is a spiral process to develop our structure following the three key words: Flexibilty, Participatory, Adaptability. There are 4 on-site experiments and one future development test conducted by drawings in phase 5. Through all onsite experiments, we develop and verify our structure from line to surface, from single to modularity, from combination to systematization.

08 TEMPORAL LIVING ROOMS

Thesis : The On-Site Aseemble Rope System For Foreign Domestic Workers Type: Academic Individual Work Time: 2021.02-2021.05 Tutor: Sony Devabhaktuni, Roberto Requejo-Belette Location: Central, Hong Kong

Discription: The Sunday gatherings of foreign domestic helpers in public space have become part of Hong Kong's cultural identity, shaping a special urban landscape, especially in Central area. Unfortunately, their gathering is undervalued and not totally accepted by other stakeholders. What I would like to address is whether it can improve the interaction between foreign domestic helpers and the public realm through the transformation of urban fabric and intervention of flexible, temporal, supportive structural system, so as to turn the street, corner, park, plaza, bridge etc in Central into specific living rooms with different attributes for foreign domestic helpers. 40

INTERVIEW & RESEARCH Inter view is the most important research methodology, leading the progress of the thesis, and the subject/topic of interviews have changed correspondingly at different stages. In the first stage, the interview questions mainly revolved around temporary logistics activities on the Chater Road. The second stage added a new focus of the survey: the connection or contradiction between their day-off lives and the public space in Central. During this stage, many in-depth interviews and dialogues were carried out.

Interview photos

Panoramic Street Elevation Throughout the course of survey, I heard, saw, and collected various stories. This collaged panoramic street elevation restored the liveliness, hubbub, and busyness of the Chater Road while also narrating part of the story.

MAPPING While conducting research, I walked around ever y street, corner, park, bridge to document the activity area and spatial characteristics of foreign domestic helpers in the Central area, and used this notational mapping (figure 15) to locate their dif ferent typologies of enclaves. There are 4 typical enclaves: - Box room They will make use of recycled carton or cardboard to build a temporal "room" with floor and wall. It’s a place for chatting, eating, sitting, sleeping, playing games. - Ground boundary They will spread mats, cloths, sheets, or cardboards on the ground to distinguish their boundaries. It’s a place for chatting, eating, sitting, sleeping, putting things, playing games. - Site facility They will sit or lean on site facilities like step, parterre, the edge of pool, handrail, etc. It’s a place for chatting, eating, sitting, dancing, working. - Tent They tend to set up tents on empty lawns, on the one hand, they can be sheltered from the sun and rain, on the other hand, they also have more privacy inside the tent.

AT THE MOMENT OF PARTING An Inter-City Bus Station for Farewell Words

Type:Academic Group Work(Group Leaeder) Collaborators: Yunbai SHI, Yuhang SHI Contribution:70% Concept, 80% Model, 30% Diagram, 50% Structure Time:8th Semester Tutor: Huangfu Wenzhi Email:huangfuwenzhi@163.com Location: Longxiang Qiao, Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Discription: Most bus stations in big cities of China only focus on efficiency, which means that passengers should enter waiting room quickly and say goodbye to companions before the security check. It is a cruel way to part lovers, family and friends. I hope that my project can create an innovative process of taking a bus, offering a comfortable space for people to express emotions at the time of parting. And I chose a site that was originally a big bus station 9 years ago, so I can arouse the memory of the land in citizens’ heart. 48

PRE-ENTRANCE TYPE DEVELOPMENT After extending the pre-entrance time, we need to offer a spatial form to hold extra companions, while at the same time suitable for parting conversation. The initial form is that the crowd randomly stand outdoors, which lacks comfort and privacy. The form we designed is a mobile rail car that has a meaning of participating in your journey and is a comfortable place to express sincere feelings. According to survey statistics, it is concluded that the majority of acquaintance group in bus stations has no more than four people, so we designed the rail car with a capacity for 4 men.

OPTIMUM CAPACITY

Type A - standing

Type B - sitting together

Type C - stable box

Type D - moving coaches
