According to Cecilia Hercik, Director of Hualālai Sports Club and Hualālai Spa who sites the latest research in fitness and biomedical science, functional fitness training is comprised of exercises that involve training the body for activities performed in daily life more easily and without injury. The exercises are low impact and targeted at core muscles of the abdomen and lower back, creating greater muscle memory, flexibility and coordination, while improving balance and posture, and helping with joint pain.
To provide this state-of-the-art fitness experience, Sports Club pavilion floors were replaced with natural wood-topped rubber flooring and every piece of fitness equipment is new, Hercik says. During the three week renovation one of the nation’s most esteemed functional fitness “gurus”, Pete McCall, was flown in for a few days to provide three personal trainers and six class instructors with

well as the advanced equipment and modalities now available. “Our new ‘Human Sport’ strength equipment is user-defined, meaning that the plane of motion is not fixed, allowing for variability from user to user and offering superior biomechanics. For the ultimate functional experience, we also added a Throwdown Rig System, affectionately dubbed the ‘Ninja Warrior Wall’ by our staff,” Hercik says. The technologically advanced system includes bumper plates, kettlebells, land mines and medicine balls. Rig systems, she says, are incredibly popular today because although relatively compact they offer unlimited training modalities. “Looking for some intense core training? We now have the brand new Vicore 0-90 bench and the Terra Core which uses an air surface for greater comfort and more muscle activation. Even our new
dumbbells are state-of-the-art with gel urethane coverings for a superior grip that is also soft in the hand,” she says. The Club’s cardio pavilion is outfitted with Star Trac, a global leader in treadmill and stationary bike innovation, as well as new Stairmaster equipment. The Series 8 treadmills offer many benefits, including a patented shock absorption system that runs the length of the deck, providing better feel and greater return similar to running on grass. The high performance Peloton bikes offer a variety of indoor cycling classes from expert trainers around the globe. They’re perfect for those who prefer individual, rather than group classes for their High Intensity Intermittent Training (HIIT) sessions, featuring short periods of intense work with rest in between. Meanwhile, just next door, the group exercise pavilion now boasts Schwinn AC Performance Plus Bikes with Carbon Blue Technology. “These are the best group cycling bikes in the industry with the greatest comfort, adjustability and Q-Factor,” Hercik says. Boga Boards are also part of the new equipment mix and are used by instructors in the Sports Club lap pool. Similar to stand up paddle boards, they are, however, broader with more floatation built-in and complete with stability straps that are attached to swim lane dividers when in use. They test core strength, balance and concentration in classes focused on traditional yoga and Pilates movements, as well as meditative breathing techniques. Clients are wanting outdoor kitchens with multi-fuel grills (wood and gas), smokers, pizza ovens and side burners. We've had two 'foodie' clients install a Grillworks artisanal grill with a culinary pedigree recognized the world over. Comfortable outdoor lounging and entertaining areas. We’ve had requests for pop-up or wall-mounted TVs on the lānai.

s with most mainland-based interior designers, Ross Cassidy landed his first custom home commission at Hualālai Resort via existing clients – in this case, a couple living primarily in Los Angeles, home to his firm Ross Cassidy, Inc. “They not only introduced me to Hualālai, but to Hawai‘i as well – I’d never been here before and I absolutely fell in love with the islands,” Cassidy says.
High on Cassidy’s agenda at the moment is a charitable organization, Healthy Decorating, he recently founded to explore the impact of design on the mind.
High praise from this in-demand, South African native who spent several years as a fashion model in London, Hong Kong and New York, traveling to exotic locations worldwide prior to pursuing his love for design.
“Décor has the power to heal, I really firmly believe this and science is starting to prove it to be true. Studies, for example, are showing how color can increase healing – great info for creating healing home environments and hugely important for health and wellness facilities,” he says.

The much beloved Residents’ Beach House was the resort’s initial dining venue, serving its first meals in February 1996, and it remains a Member favorite today. Casual, comfortable and familiar, this charming restaurant and bar dishes up uber-fresh, innovative
and delicious food and drink while conjuring up treasured memories of good times with family and friends over the years. Situated beachside at the edge of Waiakauhi fishpond on the southern end of Hualālai, natural beauty abounds and the tranquil, kick back and relax vibe is ever present. With its plank decking, dramatic driftwood light fixture, surf-culture inspired wall art and silver hardwood, the ambiance is clearly beach chic. 36
Once you land here it’s hard to leave, so it’s no surprise that many of the employees are as familiar as the place itself, having welcomed Members and guests for years with much aloha, including lead chef Eric Garrett. At the Beach House stoves for 16 years, Garrett, who grew up ocean side in Monterey, California, says his love for food was inspired by the diverse produce cultivated in nearby Salinas Valley and the
seafood from Monterey Bay. Hawai‘i Island with its relaxed lifestyle, bountiful produce and extraordinary fish, has proven to be a perfect fit for the laid back, talented and adventurous sous chef. While he happily owns his California/Mediterranean influenced cooking style, his worldwide travels and time spent living abroad are also evident in the bold, bright flavors showcased in many of the signature dishes.
Making his way to Hawai‘i Island in 2002 via the food and wine scene in San Francisco, Garrett says when he wasn’t cooking in an Italian restaurant in North Beach, he was busy eating at “every ethnic restaurant you can imagine in the city from Mexican and Vietnamese to Greek and Japanese and many, many more,” he says. That tasty research also expanded his culinary imagination.
Garrett credits a major kitchen expansion in the fall of 2017 for making it possible to experiment and create a larger menu with numerous new dishes, while maintaining many of the classics. “This is especially exciting for me and the entire culinary team, our front of house staff and, most importantly, our lunch and dinner guests,” he says. Among the popular new lunch
“I lived in Beirut, Lebanon with my family for five years and fell in love with the local shawarmas, and will feature one as a special here from time to time,” Garrett says. For those not in the know, shawarma, one of the world’s most popular street foods, is a slow roasted Levantine meat preparation rolled up in Lafa bread and most often eaten with cucumbers, tomatoes, hummus or tahini. A year living in Bangkok, Thailand as a teenager also fired up Garret’s passion for noodle dishes and the distinct flavor of coconut. “The food there blew my mind! I still remember the flavors and textures as if it were yesterday. Our house-made coconut sorbet here at the Beach House takes me right back to Thailand,” he says.

Creating culinary memories keeps me motivated and energized. We’re always looking for the next great dish,” he says.

decade after introducing Seaside Luxe and Seaside Beach boutiques at Hualālai Resort, retail industry visionary Lee Ann Sauter, founder and CEO, debuted the Maris Collective this year and has emerged as the established leader in multi-brand retail experiences at luxury resorts around the globe.
Of Latin origin, Maris means “of the sea” and the sea, Sauter says, “has always been integral to our identity and a source of our inspiration.” Just as the sea is always moving, things at the Seaside Luxe and Seaside Beach boutiques are always in motion, always evolving. With a core of long-time designers (James Perse, Missoni, Pucci, Stella McCartney and Letarte among them) new lines are constantly being added, Ramona Gulbransen, Director of Resort Retail, says. “In-store pop ups and seasonal trunk shows keep things fresh adding excitement to the retail experience. It’s a win-win for all-our staff, seasoned and upcoming designers, resort Residents and hotel guests,” Gulbransen says.
In 2008, the two Seaside boutiques revolutionized traditional resort retail, elevating it to ultrasophisticated standards by featuring internationally acclaimed fashion designers and jewelers that resonate with homeowners and hotel guests at five diamond resorts worldwide. “Through our experience, my partners and I recognized that resort retail hadn’t evolved at the same rate as the culinary, guest room and amenity experiences at most luxury resorts, so we set out to change that,” Sauter, a 25-year veteran of the retail industry, says.
