It’s Important to Know Your Importance For every action there is always a reason behind it. Some people say they act without any expectations. Others will not move without being persuasion. Throughout our world’s history there are many individuals who have enjoyed great prominence through their great deeds and accomplishments. Whichever conclusion is met, life proves that it takes action to get somewhere. While many don’t solicit approval, I believe that it’s necessary and important for everyone to know their importance. Basketball superstar Michael Jordan didn’t become a champion all by himself. His glory was made possible with the assistance of his teammates and coaching staff. Sure Jordan was the focal point of the team, but everyone played a significant role. In their absence, many of us could argue that Jordan and the Chicago Bulls wouldn’t be champions. In order for his team to reach prominence, Jordan had to lead by example and also encourage them. This meant acknowledging each of his teammates strength and weapons, and letting them know how important they were for the success of the entire team. In life, we are also required to inform our supporting cast (friends and loved ones) of their importance in our lives. We must tell our friends why we value their friendships. Let them know how your life has been enhanced through the experiences we share, both good and bad. A truly good friend can allow you to see yourself from a different perspective. Tell your parents how important they are. Let your children know how important their success is to you. Even that person who works relentlessly to bring the worst out in you, let them know how great it really makes you feel. It doesn’t matter if you’re bringing me up, or trying to pull me down, you role is still important in my life.

Dion Siler: She is far from Average the inspiration that led her to find and follow her passion. The words he spoke that day, “Why don’t you do it yourself?”, would have offended the most average customer. However, not Deon, 14 years later she is a prospering barber at the United Headlinerz Barbershop in Greensboro, N.C. Barbering is not known as a field for women but Siler has never let that shy her away from her talent. She mentioned the 2002 comedy film, Barbershop where the rapper, Eve played the female barber in a male dominated industry. Eve was portrayed as this extra tough woman who worked hard to make a name for herself as a talented barber.
When mother of two, Deon Siler would take her boys to the barbershop when they were younger, she was always displeased with the work and tried to let the barber know exactly what she wanted. The barber then gave her
Siler’s knows this story all too well because it is her daily life that she has been dealing with from rude customers that have doubted her skills for many years to loving customers that come back again and again. “It was hurtful in the beginning—there were many nights where I sat down and cried, but I’ve learned to bite that bullet,” said Siler.

Siler plans on becoming an instructor so that she can bring more women into the barbering industry. “You have to embrace having a talent and a skill, and not feel like you don’t amount or compare to males or male barbers,” she says. She wants to empower women and her community. She is also an active member of the community organization “Ladies of the Triad.” Even though there have been people that have refused her services—those nights of tears are long gone. So many established men have welcomed Siler with open arms. She has cut the heads of many celebrities such as Plies, Jadakiss, Young Buck and Jim Jones. She has also entered and won several hair shows that show that real talent cannot be denied. Those local patrons that have shunned her have done nothing but pushed her harder. h

2nd Annual Hip-Hop Community J.A.A.M.S Vonda Sampson a.k.a. VB Still, a poet, educator, mother and most of all a woman of her community, started this event last year with the purpose of showcasing the hip-hop culture into a positive light. “So many people look at hip-hop as negative because they associate it with rap music however they are two totally different things,” explains VB Still. “Hip-hop in its originality is positive music that uplifts the community, while rap music is usually secular music over a good beat.”
On August 4 and 5, VB Still and Marty B will host the 2nd Annual Hip-Hop Community J.A.A.M.S. (Joining Athletes, Artists and Musicians for our Schools and Communities) at Aggie Park at 1 p.m. This event will give youth the opportunity to enjoy a weekend of the hiphop culture, fun, entertainment and education.
For more than 20 years, VB Still has been in the music industry in some way shape or form and has a deep love for the culture. This love is shared by her son, Marty B who has found his own way into the hip-hop community as well. When her son started to work on his music she realized how effective hip-hop could be if used as a tool to reach our youth in a positive way. “You have to meet youth at what they love and young people love hip-hop—they love music,” said VB Still. For the past 10 years, VB Still has managed and guided her son’s career along with being a youth mentor; which gives her the perfect credentials to produce this hip-hop

Shannon Hairston
Lady Shae’s Hair Salon By Tonya Dixon Photos by Jarvis Harris ady Shae’s Hair Salon is uniquely in a class of its own. From the time patrons enter the reception area to the time they depart they are treated as royalty. The southern-style, elegant architecture of the exterior of the salon gives way to a sleek, sophisticated and modern interior. As soon as clients enter Lady Shae’s salon they are warmly greeted by owner, Shannon Hairston or any other member of the salon staff. It’s just one example of how the salon stands behind its mantra that “Lady Shae’s is the place where everyone is somebody all of the time.” Clients are made to feel right at home in the salon’s relaxed environment. They are offered a choice of water, tea, coffee or hot cocoa as well as any of the available “treat” for the day. In short, clients are treated like a dear family member. In fact, that’s exactly how each stylist at the salon describes the atmosphere. They all agree-it’s just like a family; teaching one another and helping each other out. There is much to be said when a group of stylists, varying ages, personalities and skill levels, unanimously testify to the secret of a salon’s success. Similarly, and perhaps more importantly it speaks volumes about the integrity of the salon’s management and ownership. Shannon Hairston began Lady Shae’s Hair Salon in 2008, but she has been doing hair much longer than that. For many years she worked at other salons and was pretty much content, nevertheless circumstances necessitated she make a move and she hasn’t looked back since. She grew up doing hair and always knew she wanted to do hair. She was that girl who was always styling friends hair in high school as well as playing the part of kitchen-tician at home, especially on Sunday mornings. She just loves helping people out and serving others. She says, “Service is service; however you do it, make a difference.” It’s not just something she says, but she lives it. “I’m still the person that helps the little lady with groceries. It pleases me to please others. That’s just my personality. That’s just me,” says Hairston. Her desire to help and serve others isn’t just confined to the individuals who sit in her styling chair. She is reaching out through other avenues as well. Over 10 years ago, when she initially began her career in the hair field, she, like many others, was inclined to acquire a part time job to help fill-in the holes in her finances until she built a stable clientele. She became a licensed CNA and began working at a group home. Of course, being that she loves to serve people, she found that she really enjoyed working with the individuals at the home and providing assistance. However, having to punch a clock and check in has always left a sour taste Hairston’s mouth. She has never been one to shy away from work; she just feels if she has to push that hard it should be for herself. Which is exactly what she did. “It’s just my personality. As long as God allows me I will never work for anybody,” says Hairston. She had the experience; she just needed to know the set-up process. Hairston spent a considerable amount of time simply researching and planning. It wasn’t long before she opened the doors to her very own group home, A Brighter Day. She admits it’s a delicate balancing act operating as an owner-stylist, as well as owner and manager of a group home. It’s her ambition and proactive mentality that enables her to make it all seem so easy. She says she just does what she has to do and gets the job done.

The group of Lady Shae stylists have been known to participate in many community service projects together. From providing their time and services at Back to School hair events to various drives to participating in one of the local health organizations events such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the ladies of Lady Shae Hair Salon are all concerned about providing community service and support as well as industry support. Likewise, the stylists are really able to support, assist and connect with their clients in a more personalized manner. Traditionally, stylists work with their patrons in an open area side-by-side. However, the Lady Shae’s Salon is uniquely designed so that each stylist has their own styling room. It’s an accommodation that Hairston is particularly proud. She says that feature allows the hair stylists to give clients their undivided attention as well as
provide a singular area that is inspired by and reflective of each stylist’s personality. The individual rooms and main floor area (for two of the stylists) is what provides hair stylist Crystal Johnson, from Siler City, NC, the opportunity to showcase her artistic personality. Although, Johnson has been doing hair for 18 years, two and a half of which have been at Lady Shae’s Salon, she also boasts a degree in art. Her room is the physical manifestation of her creative personality. The footprint of her artistic ability is evidenced in everything she does from her love of color application and treatment to her unique hair styles. “I dream hair; I live hair; I think about it all the time,” she says. Johnson also holds her instructors license. Kimberly Johnson has been a stylist for over 20 years. She also recalls doing hair in her local Greensboro neighborhood since she was a child. For the past one and a half years Johnson has been showcasing her skills at Lady Shae’s Salon, especially her skills in the use of weave. She definitely knows her way around a weave. In fact, she is considered a master weaveologist. In addition, she is a make-up stylist with an impressive clientele list. She pursues both areas with vigor and passion.

Originally from New Jersey, Kenya Howell has been at Lady Shae’s for six months, but she has been in the industry for 20 years. She says she specializes in making sure her clients understand the importance of and have healthy hair. She too has always wanted to be a hair stylist. There was really no other option. Howell is trained in the application of the high-end Fusion hair extensions-a form of permanent extensions that are literally fused to the hair for a natural and long-lasting effect. She says she gets great joy just seeing the smile on her clients faces after she has done their hair. Jodie Briggs has been styling hair since 2002. The Richmond, VA native began doing hair on the side as a sophomore at Norfolk State University. Ironically, she ultimately received a degree in journalism. Although Briggs is
capable of styling all hair types she specializes in all things related to natural hair. She loves the fact that, as a stylist, she has a hand in cultivating and building confidence in her clients simply by encouraging them to love their hair. With over 28 years in the hair care industry under her belt, Kimberly Moorman has a great deal of experience in the industry. She teaches cosmetology at Guilford Technical Community College as well as Rockingham Community College. Her take on hair is very interesting. She studies it. She wants to know why it does what it does. Perhaps she could be described as the “hair scientist” of the group. She loves getting her clients to step outside of their box and try different looks. All the stylists are well-trained and provide exceptional service to their clients. From Dominican blowouts to Keratin treatments Lady Shae’s Hair Salon is committed to providing clients with the latest in hair treatments, styles and education while ensuring clients receive the best salon experience ever. h

ou can’t pick up the newspaper or turn on the news without hearing the latest about the economy, ups and downs of the stock market, or the latest unemployment figure. In past days, a burgeoning economy allowed the average person to increase their net income and net worth almost on autopilot. But, doing the same in today’s market requires a different game plan. Speaking of game plans, let’s look at the lifetime incomes of some professional athletes: Terrell Owens ($80 million), Allen Iverson ($100 million) and Cheryl Swoopes ($50 million). Would you be surprised to know that they are BROKE? This proves that the money flowing in isn’t the whole story. Gross income is nice, but net income is nicer. Would you be surprised to know that many people give away tens of thousands of dollars a year? Did you know that you can keep hundreds or thousands (even tens of thousands) more of your money …all with the blessing of the government? The secret is maximizing your pre-tax dollars vs. after-tax dollars. You lose every time you spend aftertax dollars that could have been spent with pre-tax money. A North Carolina couple with $50,000 in income. Subtracting the personal exemption and standard deduction, they would pay 20.6% in (federal & state taxes)on $31,000 of income, or $6399. Every legitimate dollar that can be spent with pre-tax income reduces that $31,000, thereby reducing their taxes. Contributing to a 401K or an IRA is something everyone can do immediately. But, far more deductions are available for business ownership, it doesn’t matter if its part time or full time. Additional deductions available to business owners include: 1. Hiring Children. If your children help you in your business, you can pay them up to $5,800 a year. It’s a tax deduction for you, and tax free income for them). Instead of an allowance, pay them a salary. 2. Vehicle Expenses. You may deduct 55.5 cents for every business mile driven. Driving 10,000 miles a year would result in a $5,500 reduction in taxable income. That’s $458 a month that could go toward your car payment and expenses. 3. Meals and Entertainment. You can deduct 50% for meals outside your home and 100% for meals/ entertainment from home. Just $100 a month in deductions in this category could provide $1200 in
deductions. 4. Home Office Expenses. The IRS allows you to deduct expenses for phone, utilities, home office space depreciation, property taxes and insurance and more based on the percentage of home office space in your home. For instance, if your home office is 18% of your space, you can deduct 18% of those costs against your pre-tax income. Those are fixed expenses you’ll pay anyway; why not pay some of it from pre-tax earnings? 5. Medical Benefits. This is a huge tax saver if you do not have employer provided insurance. Rather than paying for benefits with after-tax funds, make it a business benefit paid with pre-tax funds. Obviously, exact figures are dependent on circumstances and you should always check with your tax professional to set your business up properly. So...can you legally quit giving your money away? Just by combining items 1-3, our hypothetical couple would reduce their taxable income by $13,000 and lower the amount they were giving away in taxes by almost $2,000! It’s not too late in the year to make a difference in your 2012 taxes. Everything you do between now and December 31 impacts your after-tax income. If you’re tired giving your hard-earned money away, start making a plan today, if you need help call us for a free tax analysis and newsletter. h

P
amela Green is the founder, owner and operator of PSG Event Management, a full service event design and planning company. The Sanford, N.C. native says she specializes in all the “fun stuff.” From retreats to reunions; anniversaries to retirements and weddings to church events, PSG is more than capable of handling it all. Each event is custom designed and tailor-made for each client. The exploding business was inaugurated only four short months ago and although it may seem to be a bit “green” in relation to its founding, Pamela Green is certainly not a novice or a “wet-behind-the ears” business woman. In fact, she boasts over a decade’s worth of related education and experience. After graduating in 2001 with a degree in business management from Shaw University she took the first step on the path that would lead to an impressive career in the hospitality and service industry. Green immediately landed a front desk position at a hotel. It wasn’t long before she had risen in the ranks past that entry-level position to hotel general sales manager, catering director and ultimately general manager. From there she gained experience in sales and market development for a major national firm. Before long she was recruited by another major player in the hospitality industry and subsequently returned to her roots-the hotel business. Nevertheless, in late 2011, within a few short months of accepting the new position she became a victim of the slow economy and was released from her job when the company was forced to downsize. She was undoubtedly shaken by the abrupt life-altering event that had taken place, but she never deviated from her optimistic outlook on life. Her thoughts may have lingered in the uncertainties of what lie ahead, but she whole-heartedly trusted that God had divinely orchestrated that major life-event to force her into her life’s purpose. In addition, she says all the knowledge and information she garnered was invaluable. “I truly believe things happen for a reason. If God had kept me on that job I wouldn’t be where I am right now. I’m certain I wouldn’t own my own business,” says Green. “I would have put it on the back burner. I would have been thinking about it, talking about it, but I wouldn’t have done it.” It eventually dawned on Green everything she had been doing for someone else’s company; all the expertise she had, she could just as easily do it for herself. She took the initial leap and established the company. From inception, PSG Event Management has handled an array of projects and dealt with different customers with various event design and budget needs. She believes it’s important for contracted or potential clients to realize they are not relegated to have a mediocre or less fulfilling event just because there may be financial limitations. Green recalls an extremely rewarding event she was contracted to coordinate. “I was able to work with a family who was struggling financially yet the husband wanted to do something really nice for his wife,” she explains. “He didn’t have extra income but with a monthly budget structure and a lot of ingenuity, I was able to create a memorable 30th birthday celebration for her. I knew when I saw the tears in his eyes on the evening of the event, this is what I was born to do.” Regardless of the budget, Green says there is a level of elegance and professionalism that every PSG event will have, regardless. “You may have a limited budget but that’s why you have a great planner to do the thinking and ‘working out’ for you,” she says. “For example, you may think plastic tablecloths and utensils are cheaper [therefore the best route] for an upscale event, but I can get real china and linens for the same cost.” She is able to reach back and utilize the great contacts, connections and relationships she made with vendors while working in

the corporate world. It all fits together perfectly producing a brand—the PSG brand, that is synonymous with professionalism and excellence. PSG Event Management’s level of commitment to making sure a client is completely satisfied is unparalleled. Green is constantly thinking, strategizing, working, not only making sure her own company is operating at optimum performance, but making sure her clients experience a oneof-a-kind event giddy with excitement, yearning for the next. “I want it to be what you want it to be, times 10,” she says. She understands what a magnitude of a job it often is to pull off those near perfect events and does everything she can to make it happen. Whether that means going to bed at midnight planning or waking before sunrise still planning, PSG Event Management will get the job done. Not only that, but the company will supersede expectations. “I will under promise and over deliver,” she says.
Green’s creative and generous personality shines through everything she does. As much as she is interested in growing her own brand, she is equally committed to giving back to the community. For every event she books she sows 10% back into the community—whether through a local charity, giveaways or the like, it’ just her way of saying thank you. She regularly donates her services to many local non-profits. No doubt the giving spirit and commitment to client satisfaction will insure the plans and goals Green has set for PSG will come to pass. Her goals are attainable and her strategies are meticulous. The end result should look similar to this: PSG Event Management will oversee and own a full-service events center as well as a vendor showcase center. Until then the PSG brand is growing and already spreading like wildfire. h

Jimmie “J.J.”Jeter By Terry L. Watson Photos by Still Shot Photography Inc.
W
inston-Salem, N.C., native Jimmie Jeter is a triple threat — he sings, acts, and dances. He has worked with the North Carolina Black Reparatory Company, the Kernersville Little Theater, North Forsyth High School Theater, West Side Civic Theater Company and the Community Theater of Greensboro. He is also a member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. As talented and gifted as he obviously is, he confesses that his life would be nothing without the mercy and love of God, stating that he is the ultimate ruler of his life and refuses to have it any other way Jeter is the son of Steven and Sonya Waddell, and brother to Joi and Jasmine Jeter. “As I look back over my life, I guess all those whoopings worked,” he says. In his 18 years of life on Earth, he says there have been many challenges, but the greatest struggle he says was finding out why he truly loves God. “I’m sure most kids my age and younger can agree that we are “told” most of our lives to believe God but never really given the opportunity to genuinely experience him for ourselves,” he says. “In this past year, I have experienced God for myself and in a new light, so the challenges that I face every day are now minor because nothing really is greater than my love for Christ.” He is a recent graduate of the 2012 high school drama program of the North Carolina School of the Arts. There, he was challenged in every aspect of his life: mentally, physically, emotionally, physiologically and spiritually. Some of his academic accomplishments include the Sharon Poindexter Citizenship Award of North Forsyth High School, Humanitarian Award - Human Relations Committee of Winston Salem, Best Male Actor- North Carolina Theater Company, Best Leading Male- North Carolina Theater Company and he is a Honor Roll student. Not only did God give Jeter the opportunity to go to the best high school for Performing Arts, but He also opened the door for Jeter to attend the best college for Performing Arts — The Juilliard School in New York City, with his tuition paid in full through scholarships. He says his aspirations are to continuously work as an actor, whether in movies, stage plays, or television. He also desires to work professionally with Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Idris Elba and Johnny Depp. “I would also like to one day become an artistic director of a theater company,” he says. Jeter acknowledges the fact that it takes a village to raise child. He accredits the
constant support of his parents as his greatest inspiration and example for life. He also credits Bishop Sheldon McCarter and his co-pastor for being spiritual influences. He says Kelly and Molley Maxner have been tremendous jewels in his artistic development. Mable Robinson helped him start on his journey by pushing him to go further. Most importantly he says his grandmother, who passed away two years ago, has undoubtedly been a vital key to his success. “She always taught me to keep God first in all that I do.,” he says. “My relationship with God is the only thing that keeps me sane in this crazy industry. It has taught me to love, love , love, and love some more,” says Jeter. Life hasn’t always been simple for him. There have been times when he was lost. Now he professes that if God can turn my life completely around, I know he can do it for anyone. “No one is too young to love Christ and have a real relationship — know him for yourself,” he says. h

Love Makes The Difference By Terry L. Watson Photos by Perfect Lenz Photography

o enjoy success, you must first love what you do. Love will carry you through the tough times and allow you to appreciate the good ones. Kimberly Fountain-Pickard embodies that kind of love. She is a licensed cosmetologist and cosmetologist instructor. A native of Reidsville, N.C., she has owned and operated Fountain of Youth Styling Salon since 2003. Besides providing her clients with superb service, she uses her platform to impact, change lives and share her love of God. After graduating from Rockingham County High School, Pickard enrolled at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, N.C., and studied nursing. She eventually changed her focus of study to cosmetology and her journey as a hair stylist began. She then attended Carolina Beauty College in Greensboro, N.C., and graduated in 2002. She returned back to Carolina Beauty College and obtained her cosmetology instructor license in 2008. As a means to pour back into those who have helped her, she has also taught at Carolina Beauty College at both locations in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Pickard got her first shot to style hair professionally at Nate’s Beauty & Barber in Eden, N.C., owned by Nate Reynolds. She eventually moved to Reidsville and opened her salon on the first day of August in 2003. She says she experienced working in a salon setting with several other stylists. “I am well aware of many challenges of salon ownership and I certainly know about the peaks and valleys of owning your own business. My challenges became a part of my testimony about overcoming the struggle of becoming a successful entrepreneur,” she explains. When she made the decision to open her own salon, she wanted to be totally independent. Being independent she says provides her with a unique feeling of freedom. “I love the location, the relaxed atmosphere, and most of all I love the people. I don’t say this is my salon, I tell my clients that this is “our” salon because it is the people that help create a welcoming and peaceful environment,” she says. The salon doors are always open. She has clients that come for services but there are some that come in just to speak. She is also able to reach out to her friends that are homeless, battling drug addiction or cancer. “I truly care about people as a whole,” she says. Continued on the next page

Some of the services Pickard specializes in are waxing, make up application for individuals and groups such as bridal and photoshoots, color and healthy hair. In addition to being a salon owner, she says she is a people person, a go-getter, and someone who loves to laugh. In her spare time she designs for her own jewelry line, Designs by Kimberly Fountain-Pickard — Divas Working With Experience. While in cosmetology school, Pickard says she had excellent instructors. “They really cared about your education. They were focused on you succeeding not only in cosmetology but also in life,” she says. One that she speaks highly of is, Betty Sharpe (former Director of Carolina Beauty College), who she says

She also acknowledges Christie Harrison, owner of Innovative Styles in Greensboro, Yvonne Hawkins who is also an instructor at CBC, her pastor and first lady Bobby and Carol Robertson of Monument of Faith Ministries in Eden, N.C. becoming a salon owner. She is inspired by the satisfaction of her clients express after receiving her service. One in particular is Mrs. Lillian Graves. “She walked into my salon after her first treatment of chemotherapy and asked me to be strong for her. It was my first time ever having a client with cancer, and also one still in the process of receiving treatment,” she says. Mrs. Graves had faith in her and she says she knew that she could not let her down. As she draped her, she says she noticed a couple of strands of hair were on her towel. Once the water from the shampoo bowl touched her hair, she says the hair from her head began to fill the bottom of the shampoo bowl. “I had to fight back tears as I took my hands to remove all the long hair she had on her head and place it in the trash because it was clogging the sink before I could continue to shampoo her hair,” she says. When she was finished shampooing her hair, Pickard says she was bald with little strands of hair still on her head. She says this was the hardest moment in her life and career. As she began to look in the mirror, Mrs. Graves said “it’s gone and but it could have been worse. I am still here and it is just hair”. Pickard says she thanks God for allowing her to share that experience with her client. She is now a breast cancer survivor and has regrown all of her long, thick beautiful hair. Pickard says that if it wasn’t for God, she wouldn’t be the person she is today ‘I wouldn’t be fortunate to have so many great people in my life. My motto for life is, “if I can help somebody as I travel along then my living shall not be in vain.” She advises anyone who may be thinking about following in her footsteps to plan and prepare as much as possible. “The styling profession isn’t easy but it can be very rewarding. The most important thing that you must have is a genuine love for what you do. If you love it, everyone that you come in contact with will notice and appreciate you and your service,” she says. h

hris Brown has always known he wanted to own his own business and in July 2001 his desire came to fruition. He began Armor Bearer Discount Movers. It all began when Brown decided to help his cousin move her belongings from one part of town to the other. His cousin had solicited quotes from many professional movers; however, after receiving stunningly high estimates she requested Brown’s assistance. The move proved to be quite simple. Clearly Brown thought his job was complete. He had successfully helped his cousin without any hiccups, mishaps, issues or problems to arise. Everything was smooth sailing. In fact, everything went so well that in the process of moving his cousin, he inadvertently acquired another client who needed a mover. Before he knew it, helping out one family member turned into a startling successful business. Brown initially operated Armor Bearer Discount Movers on a part-time basis. At the time, he was dotingly working his way through the Office Depot Management Trainee Program. The company had recruited Brown out of college. It wasn’t his dream job, but overall he was satisfied, but he soon tired of the constant need to relocate that the position required. Out of nowhere as quick and spontaneous as Armor Bearer Discount Movers began it just as quickly grew and expanded. In a very short amount of time, Brown’s part-time gig became his fulltime company. It almost seemed automatic. Although Brown is from Roxboro, NC, the company is based in Greensboro. Armor Bearer is a Biblically-based term meaning to uplift; to protect; and to take care of. The name literally describes and reflects the company’s philosophy. It’s no small coincidence and was a very conscious decision on Brown’s part. He was fully aware of the meaning. He truly came to understand the meaning and its importance through the leadership role he maintains-leader of the men’s ministry-at his church, Word of Faith Christian Fellowship. He realized it was a perfect fit. The name resonates with connotations and traits of strength and dependability. “We are Christian owned and strive to offer every client the highest level of customer service, professionalism and quality services,” says Brown. The company is completely licensed and certified by the NC Utilities Commission, who governs NC movers. Armor Bearer Discount Movers offers local and long distance moves. Special attention is given on the premises to prevent damage to both the old and new residence. Standard moves include pad wrapping and shrink wrap, all the necessary moving tools including hand trucks, dollies, any needed leverage equipment and the appropriate number of moving trucks. The company even allows customers to leave clothing and certain items in drawers to reduce the customer’s amount of packing. A basic value replacement protection plan comes standard with the option to upgrade. The majority of the company’s exceptional employees have been with the company from the beginning. Brown knows their work ethic, dedication and integrity on the job. He does his very best to make the process of every customers move as simple and seamless as possible. As much as possible customers are given an approximate estimate

based upon the information they exchange with Brown as well as an on-site review if necessary. A date for the move will be scheduled along with the appropriate number of movers. He will take the time to explain to the customer the logistics of the physical move describing exactly how the customer’s items will be meticulously handled, “protected,” and “taken care of” in an effort to reassure the customer. A confirmation is sent out and the customer will also receive a courtesy call the day before the move. Once the move has occurred Brown will personally follow-up with the client to make sure of the client’s complete satisfaction. It’s that top of the line; five-star approach to customer service that Brown is certain sets Armor Bearer Discount Movers apart from his competitors. “We get the majority of our jobs through referrals and word of mouth. Many customers tell me that they picked my company out of many others because of the open communication lines, excellent customer service and feeling stress free after talking with me,” says Brown. “We do a lot of moves at various retirement homes here and are often told that we treat the elderly residents better than anyone
“We do a lot of moves at various retirement homes here and are often told that we treat the elderly residents better than anyone they’ve ever met” they’ve ever met.” Brown unequivocally attributes the company’s success to his unwavering belief and faith in God. Although, Brown’s path of entrepreneurship has been for the most part problem free, he has dealt with issues that would certainly have struck a mighty blow to others. Just last year, Brown suffered a major attack on his health and stability. Nevertheless, Brown says the business never missed a beat, actually, it flourished; business was never better. He gives complete honor to God for his complete healing as well as the constant support of his wife Angie and two daughters, Aviance and Victoria and encouragement from the Armor Bearer Discount Movers team. It’s the instances such as miracles in the midst of sickness and tribulation along with sincere gratefulness of health and victorious times that convinces Brown of a bright future for his company. Big things are certainly to come. h

The Key to Shaving One of the key factors that separates good Salons and Barbershops from others is their attention to detail when servicing clients. A winning combination is a diligent focus to detail and determination to offer quality service. Let’s take a look at the art of shaving. Shaving goes back centuries, but the formula remains the same. Setting the stage: Your start determines your finish. How you start is key to ensure the face is properly moisturized. This can be achieved by applying a hot towel (steaming the face) and or shaving just after getting out of the shower. This aids in softening the hair follicles and giving you a clean shave. The Right touch: Next you will use a skin conditioning shaving lotion before you put the hot lather on, and steam the face with a hot towel. The Art It is recommended for you to shave with the grain, using long strokes or in the same direction that the hair grows to prevent irritation. For a closer shave it is required to pull the skin as you shave. In most cases an upward motion is required for the lower neck area.
Carlos Russell Faith Cuts Barbershop 3260 Randleman Road Greensboro, NC, 27406 (336)273-4676
Final shaving step: After shaving is complete, use a skin rejuvenating astringent, this procedure should eliminate or reduce skin irritations and razor bumps. Knowing your skin and how your hair grows is a key factor to understanding how often you need to shave. There are a number of barbers that offer the hot towel shave, but you will not truly enjoy the experience until you have received one provided by a barber who is committed to meeting the needs of their clients. Specifically, from the start and finish of the shave. It is paramount for any barbershop to have barbers who are well experienced and ready to service you in the art of shaving. The atmosphere is the most important part of shaving. After you are reclined, the next step should be the service of a hot towel, heated to your desire. As you enjoy an embracing atmosphere, your face will thank you for visiting your Professional Barber.

Hair Color and The Natural You Thinking about changing the color of your hair? Here are some of the things your should know. It’s a must to conduct a consultation with your client to assist them with understanding the different types of hair color. Explain permanent color shades and Semi-permanent color shades. Permanent hair color can be very damaging, especially if used improperly. If your hair is dry, weak, or shedding, consider Demi or Semi permanent coloring to add shine and depth to your hair. It is also important to determine the strength of your clients hair and ask them why they are interested in a color service. A better understanding of their occupation will also assist you with choosing a hair color. It’s also important to recognize what type of personality your client has. Treatment Protein and moisturizing treatments are essential prior to and after receiving any hair color services. Shade selection is determined by a number of factors including complexion, undertones in the skin, and even your profession. As a Professional Stylist it is also important to educate your clients on how they should maintain their hair and recommend a suitable color line product to use in between visits. Going Natural The process of going natural usually begins with the client growing out their relaxer or curl. The client must start growing the hair out, in the absence of chemicals. One technique involves cutting all the relaxed hair off (The Big Chop) or to allow the client to grow their hair to a length where the clients feels comfortable enough to cut it. Natural hair care specialist Danica Stover declares that “being natural promotes self love and appreciation of textured, wavy or straight hair”. Treatment It is important to moisturize and hydrate the hair. It is very important to select a good hydrating shampoo as well. Additionally, select a good moisturizing conditioner with good detanglers, to ensure that your hair is soft, moist, well hydrated and free of all tangles. There are so many benefits from Going Natural inlcuding Healthier Scalps, better elasticity, Healthier Shine, less split ends, and stronger hair. Just be making the decision to Go Natural, you are on the road to a life of Healthy Hair.

Living Healthy
Building Up Her Life, While Building Up Her Body By Terry L. Watson Photos by Katrina McKenzie
McKenzie says what she loves most about bodybuilding is the transformation that happens to your body. “It is the best way that I have found to sculpt my body to look the way I want it to look. It is also a great way to relieve stress,” she says. Even with limitations, she says bodybuilding allows her to feel that she’s as good as everyone else and like there is nothing physically wrong with her. One of the biggest challenges she has faced during her life was when she was diagnosed with a bone disease in 2009. Her whole life she says she knew something was wrong with her left femur but no doctor ever could find out what it was. She was told in the fifth grade that she had a hairline fracture and it would heal on its own. It never did. “I just got used to limping and to the fact that I would have this hairline fracture forever,” she says. “It caused me to not be able to be as active as I wanted to be when growing up. When I found bodybuilding/weight lifting, I realized that if I strengthened my leg muscles the pain was lessened.” However in 2009, an orthopedic doctor finally found out what the problem was. She was diagnosed with Fibrous Dysplasia. She was born with the disease active in certain parts of her bones as it replaced the bone marrow with a fibrous material. This exchange had been occurring in McKenzie’s femur for a while and by 2009 the whole top half of her femur was a fibrous matter. “I was immediately taken to surgery and told that she could step off of a curb at any moment and her bone could shatter. The doctors were astonished that she was in the process of becoming an aerobics instructor at the time and doing aerobics up to four hours a day. She says the surgery involved screwing a steel plate onto the side of her thigh bone. “It was as painful as it sounds. I was out of work for six weeks and had to go from a wheelchair to a walker, then to crutches. I recovered slowly and was back working out almost full strength after six months,” she says.
K
atrina Tia McKenzie is very energetic and outgoing besides her love to read and dance. She is a huge sports fanatic, and professes the Dallas Cowboys and the Boston Celtics as her #1 teams! She attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry, and a master’s in chemistry. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and says she is addicted to physical fitness. “I have always struggled with my weight my entire life. I was introduced to Weight Watchers at a very young age and tried every fad diet that was out there when I was growing up and never lost much weight,” she says. Twice in her life she says she found herself wearing a size 16-18 and weighing well over 220 lbs. “Then I found weight lifting and my world changed. I am now a Funky Fit Aerobics Instructor and bodybuilder,” she states. McKenzie began working out in 1998 at Quincy Roberts Elite Fitness Center Inc. in Greensboro, N.C. She was introduced to owner, Quincy Roberts and was asked if she’d ever thought about being in a bodybuilding contest. “Of course, my answer was ‘NO WAY’. I have never even owned a two piece swimsuit,” she says. Roberts was great and encouraged McKenzie to do it. “He said, lets train like you are going to do a show, if you aren’t ready we will not do it but if you are, then let’s go for it,” she says.

Almost a year to the date, she was taken back to surgery to the operating room to have Arthroscopic knee surgery on the opposite leg because no cartilage was there. Back to the crutches she went and out of work for another six weeks. She slowly recovered from that after another three months. Soon she was back up to 213 lbs, and miserable again she says. “I tried to lose weight again to no avail. Then I remembered how I lost the weight back in 1999 - bodybuilding. So I went back to my first love and with new limitations from my surgeries, I decided to train for another show after ten years,” she says. Her new ambitions were supported by personal training from IFBB Pro Henderson Gordon at MaxFit Customized Personal Training Center in High Point, N.C. She says she dieted for 365 days and on March 31, 2012 she was back on the stage again competing in a body building contest. She went from 213 lbs and 34.5% body fat to 144 lbs and 19% body fat. She says she pulls her inspiration from people that have come in contact with at the gyms throughout her life. These facilities include Elite Fitness Center in Greensboro, AC Fitness in Greensboro, N’Shapewith’N Fitness and Image Studio in Charlotte, Peak Fitness in Charlotte, Hayes Taylor YMCA in Greensboro, The Rush located on Randleman Road in Greensboro, and MaxFit Customized Personal Training Center in High Point. Her life has been impacted she says by several people during her journey. Her father, Dr. Wayland McKenzie, gave her the courage along her career, educational path, and weight loss journeys to shoot for the stars. Her three personal trainers (IFBB Pro Quincy Roberts, Nettie Reeves, CPT, CHC owner of N’Shapewith’N and IFBB Pro Henderson Gordon) have given her the tools to change her body. “My trainers have worked with me before and after surgeries. They have helped me physically recuperate, lose weight and mentally push me when I wanted to quit,” she says. In additions she admits that her Charlotte and Greensboro girlfriends have been a great impact on her life. “They have seen my tears and listened to my fears and have had my back through thick and thin,” McKenzie states.

Lastly, the one person besides God she says that has had the biggest impact on her life has been her mother, Peggy McKenzie. “My mother has been my number one cheerleader. She has pushed and carried wheelchairs, walkers and crutches, and has dried my tears and changed bandages. She never missed a doctor’s appointment and has held my hand when I didn’t think I could make it,” she professes. McKenzie also says her mother has attended any and everything that has been important to her including aerobics classes from Greensboro to Charlotte and bodybuilding contests. “She has sprayed me with tan and cooked chicken during my crazy diet times. She has even come to the gym with me at 5:30 a.m. during my training to help motivate me. My trainer, my nurse, my coach, my cheerleader, my best friend is my mother,” she says. “I would not have made it to and through any goal without her. Thank h you God for my mom!”

June 16th, 2012 Festival Park Downtown Greensboro By Terry L. Watson Photos by Howard Gaither Mykel Media Company Terri Johnson We have to do it again—God blessed us on Saturday, June 16 with beautiful weather and a great atmosphere. It was such a great experience for everyone involved. There was so much food, so many people and a wonderful time. The first Huami Magazine Community Cookout was a huge success. Alana Allen, Deputy Editor for Huami Magazine said it best. We all contributed for one cause, to give back to our community with selfless acts and compassion. The cookout was a free event for anyone who wanted to enjoy a family-fun filled day at the park in downtown Greensboro. We had great music thanks to Duncan Butler, Agape Muzic, Douglas Willett, Signature Soundz, Justin the Beloved and Bryce of Destiny Christian Center in Greensboro. The master of ceremony DJ Big Boi came through in a big way by keeping the audience’s attention with his skillful techniques. What is a cookout with a grill master? Dave Hughes didn’t miss a beat and kept the flames jumping and hotdogs smoking. Most importantly, this event could have never happened without the sponsors and volunteers. The volunteers who filled every gap from attending the inflatable jumpers, serving snow cones, serving food and more. The volunteers made the difference. This event showcased the love that so many of us have for others in our community. There is no way we could have fed nearly 800 people without them. A special thank you is given to Deon Garner for showing up at 7:00am to set up the Inflatables and Banners. He was “Mr. Everything” and very dependable. I really thank Pamela Green and Albany Jones for painting the faces of so many children. We also thank Tonya Dixon and Abbria McWhite for stepping in and serving so many. James T. Chandler of JT Financial Services says he saw the need on my face for help and jumped in without being asked to help. James is a great guy with a huge heart. Donevan Cherry of Cherveli Media came to help and also brought others with him. He is always lending a helping hand out to his community. Tanika and Colin Harris were life savers. When the food began to run short, they stepped in and provided more. That is what made this event so great. We were able to feed so many and produce a festive atmosphere all by contributing our time and resources for the good of others. I thank God for everyone and I confess that Huami Magazine didn’t do anymore than the others involved. We are making a difference in our community. h

For Your Life” because everyday is a fight, not just with your health but also with life. “After I had my son in May of 2010, I started feeling bad was told I had Vertigo (a condition in which somebody feels a sensation of whirling or tilting that causes a loss of balance). I was sent to a Ear, Nose and Throat specialist who performed a MRI on me,” she says. He later called her at work and shared his suspicions of her being afflicted with MS.

n Saturday, June 23, 2012 Palmica Haith held her first fund-raising event to increase awareness about Multiple Sclerosis and for those fighting Cancer. Recently, she has been diagnosed with the debilitating disease but hasn’t allowed her condition to hinder any ambitions for her life. She says she came up with the name “Fighting
At first Haith says she didn’t want to accept the news. She had other things going on her life. “Everything was going so fast I didn’t take the time to really inhale. All that was on my mind were my children and would I be there to care for them,” she says. A common challenge for patients diagnosed with MS is affording the treatment and
medication. With her event, Haith’s’ goal was to increase my knowledge about her ailment and that of her family and friends also. When her uncle Clark, who had been battling cancer was told that he only had six months to live, she wanted to include his fight in her event as well. “My uncle always loved to have a good time. He was called superman because no matter what the situation, he was always there for his family and friends,” says Haith. She says she truly believe she will be healed. Plans are in action for the 2nd Annual Prosperity For Life event in 2013. Haith says she also wants to produce other fund-raising and awareness functions throughout the year as well. “I hope to reach as many people as possible. Life is a journey you never know the outcome all you can do is not to take life or people for granted and to thank God to be here everyday,” she says. h

His Purpose My Praise
Angel M. Barrino was inspired to write this book, as a testimony of her own life experiences and the lessons she has learned. She compares her life to a portion of the poem Mother to Son written by Langston Hughes. In it he says, “Well, son, I’ll tell you: life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor-bare”. Barrino talks candidly about her bouts of depression, low self-esteem, bad health and abuse, and how God never left her but gave her purpose through it all. This book is meant to be a means of healing and reconciliation to help mend brokenness and emotional damage that has occurred through toxic relationships and life circumstances. Barrino has had to deal with the stigma and shame of having two failed marriages in the church. Christian marriages are supposed to be the standard that others are measured by. So how does she, a woman of God have two marriages that didn’t work, is the question she had to ask herself? For review copies or media inquiries please contact Angel M. Barrino at (336) 987-0894 or by email at hispurpose_mypraise@yahoo.com

Community First:
4th Annual Back to School Drive
W
hen it comes to the summer, our kids enjoy having fun, hanging with friends during their two and a half month break from school. However, when August peaks its beautiful head, parents have to prepare their kids to get back on the routine of a bed time, attend school orientation and back to school shopping.
By Alana Allen www.iamaqueen.org iamaqueen@gmail.com
The most important thing is the necessary supplies all of our children need in order to be successful. It doesn’t matter what grade, it goes from Pre K-12th graders needing school supplies. However, what happens to those children who don’t have the same opportunity as their peers? What about the parents who have to focus on paying the bills and worrying about school supplies later? This is the real truth of so many children in our communities not being prepared to go back to school. However, I Am A Queen, Footsteps to Follow and James B. Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club is changing the stigma that our youth go through on the first day of school. All of these organizations have collaborated together to impact the community in a positive way with the 4th Annual Back to School Drive at the Windsor Recreation Center, located at 1601 E. Lee St., Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, August 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last year’s goal was set at 100 back packs, and the organizations exceeded that goal of securing 106 with all supplies needed. This year’s goal is to secure 200 back packs along with other supplies; which means 200 kids in the triad will be helped. Supplies needed include:
Back Packs (200 Goal) Pencils & Pens Notebooks Folders & Binders Crayons & Colored Pencils Glue Sticks Scissors Calculators All donations are tax deductible through the partnership of James B. Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club, a 501 c 3 tax exempt organization. h
