FULL SPECTRUM SYMBIOSIS URBAN STRATEGY, RESEARCH, BUILDING TYPOLOGY CORE STUDIO 3 | 2017 FALL INSTRUCTOR: MATTHEW JULL PARTNER: HAN YU, YUE HAN Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD, Flow Design As the northernmost point of United States, Barrow exhibits an extreme geology-meteorology condition. At high latitudes, low average radiation in limited light time throughout the year, as well as continuous permafrost layer, contribute to the specific cold moist climate regime across the area. Low biodiversity makes the ecosystem even more fragile. Intentionally or not, road grid and building structure deeply reshaped the radiation distribution and air flow pattern within the settlement. However, mutual beneficial relationship hasn’t been observed from the lifted building structure. Interim space between building and ground becomes the most problematic area across the city, which could also be viewed as the breakthrough point to redefine the relationship between environment, human and species. With carefully designed form, function and transparency of building-ground interface, microclimate mode, as well as spatial configuration could be re-programmed according to specific site features. Varied typologies created from a spectrum of demand.

Even though Barrow has a harsh living condition, people living there has developed a living style relating to the natural environment. Outdoor activities like hunting and doing sport make up a large part of their daily life.

MOBILE LIFE MAKERSPACE CORE STUDIO 2 | 2017 SPRING INSTRUCTOR: BILL SHERMAN Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya (for animation) Hudson Yards has a history which is closely related to the development of transportation. For the present, Hudson Yards' develops based on platforms above old rail yards, which brings valuable new public spaces, office spaces, and residential spaces for the city already lack space. The current dense and complicated which make the traffic even worse. In the future, as the driverless technology develops, driverless car and mobile units will gradually substitute the traditional traffic tools. Based on the past and present of Hudson Yards, the design follows the track of transportation development and become an architecture adapting to the future New York road net, which will be affected and changed by driverless vehicle and mobile units. The whole building is a system which allows mobile units are performing various of tasks in it. Project conceptual animation: https://youtu.be/0itgNMTd4lA

INTERACTIVE COMMUNITY CAMPUS HOUSING CORE STUDIO 1 | 2016 FALL INSTRUCTOR: MARGARITA JOVER Sketchup,Vray, CAD, Photoshop, Illustrator According to the history of West Complex, it was once a hybrid building which serve as both medical college and hospital. The proposal of the collective housing applies in urban scale, building scale and unit scale. At the urban scale, a free plan was created on the site to attract tourists and citizensďźŒbringing energy to the site. At the building scale, a series of social condensers are implanted into the building to provide a place for the three groups of people to interact, connecting them vertically. At the unit scale, several units are designed for different groups of people from student to married couple to retired man and woman. The combine combination of form, program and public spaces, emphasizes walkability, interaction and exchanging in the community that improve the harmony and life quality.

The resident units encompass the existing courtyards to utilize the view and natural sunlight. A series of social condensers are implanted into the building. These social condensers connect different clusters of the residential spaces together. However, the social condensers close at night, giving privacy to each residential groups.

The ground floor refers to the precedent by Peter Zumthor's work. The idea of open space is borrowed from his free plan in Therme Vals. The ground floor is divided by 13 boxes, producing free circulation and open spaces for the residents and citizens.

ENLARGED DETAIL PLAN The floor plans refer to Peter Zumthor's another work: Home for Senior Citizens. The corridor connecting residential clusters are enlarged to provide shared spaces.Furniture is placed in the hallway to make a family-like environment for the residents, encouraging them to occupy the public space and therefore interact with others.

LIBRARY OF LIGHT CITY LIBRARY CORE STUDIO | 2016 SPRING INSTRUCTOR: YANG ZHAO Sketchup,Vray, CAD, Photoshop, Illustrator Before the appearance of public libraries, the distance between people was closer. People tend to learn knowledge from each other. However, with the emergence of multimedia, there is growing alienation of people’s social life. Hence a new method for the dissemination of knowledge is required to gather people back to the library. The concept is that people are serving as books, operating a living library. They can integrate various of knowledge and transmit them in multiple methods, which is far more interesting while efficient. Moreover, through communicating with others, there is a chance for people to develop further understanding of knowledge and new technique. TO READ A “LIVING BOOK”

Unlike other library, people in this library are not required to be quiet but even encouraged to talk. In this way, knowledge and information can be transmitted to each other, and achieve further or new understanding.

Every light well has their own structure, which is not bearing the weight of the roof. The structure of the roof is supported by a series of trusses. The material the lightwell is honeycomb panel, which disfusses the sun light, providing soft light condition for the working area.

The concept of this Frabrication Lab is to provide a comfortable light environment, in order to promote the working efficiency of people, and relieve their fatigue. The skim is to expend the roof to the slab, so as to create a series of rainwater recycling light wells, and the light wells are applied with irreflexive transparent materials, to bring soft light to the interior.
