[ light and emotion ]
[ architecture
and people's emotional need ]
When information booms faster, people prone to be indifference and estranged. When urban grow with more houses and building, but home are become distant. When walls are built higher and higher, the sense of security is lower instead. When building cluster dense and crumpt, nature and ancient house are squeezing to stifle. On this boosting, updating and accelerating world, people's emotional need are being ignored. The relationship between architecture and human is always close. Architecture is not merely a living machine, so architecture are obliged not only to draw blueprints on the blank, but to care for people's emotional need and fill their emotional loss, concerning the need of [social communication]1, the need of [harmony life with nature]2, the need of [social identification]3, the need of [sense of security]4 and the importance of [social condensking] 5 Therefore, i am trying to use architecture forms to fill these needs and to create a more pleasant circumstances for people. This portfolio demonstrates how i think and my attempt to study the relationship between people's emotional need and architecture and space elements including light, circulation, scale and sight. Here i present my portfolio.

The appearance of public library provides everyone a space to gather and learn.
With the popularization of the multimedia, people concentrate on the screen rather than people.

Before the appearance of public library, the distance between people was getting closer and closer. However, with the appearance of multimedia, the distance between people suddenly increased a lot. People start to be estranged. Hence a new method for the dissemination of knowledge is required to gather people back together in the library.

A “Living Book”
There are two kinds of people in the library: Normal people and the living “books”. The “book” who have profound knowledge or abundant of experience and are willing to share are the only group that has access to books in the library. Normal people absorb new knowledge through communicating with the “living books”, and the “book” obtain new understanding of knowledge through communication.

THE DECLINE OF FARMLANDS As the development of Guangzhou, many migrant workers flowed into this city. With the transformation of agriculture into industry in Panyu, most farmland nearby the urban villages have been rented out as industrial lands. This change has attracted numerous migrant workers to find jobs here, accompany with a great demand of housing. Thus public spaces were occupied to build houses for rent and living condition was ruined. industrial land

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOCAL PEOPLE & MIGRANT WORKERS With the decline of agriculture and the increase of industry, more and more migrant workers settled down in Shendun village. The demand of housing arises day by day. However, the migrant workers can hardly integrate into the local community, they feel lonely and lack social identity.
GROUND SPACE ANALYSIS
STREET SCALE As the demand for rental increased, most of the space in village were occupied for the construction of apartments, and houses, l i t t l e public space were left for people to spend their leisure time.
The average building height of the village is increasing, but the of street space is reducing.

FARMING GATHERS PEOPLE As the local people as well as the migrant workers were farmers before, a farming space can create a common interest to make them get closer. Moreover, as the farming space were set on the rooftop, it can physically reduce the distance between these two groups of people, so as to promote the communication between them.
COMMUNICATION CIRCLES The communication scale is divided into 3 levels

CONCEPT In Africa, many children are suffering from wars. Some children are abducted or even sold by their own parents to be child soldiers. They have seen too much death and are always afraid of being involved in this misfortune, however, there is no one to protect them. Thus, they lack a sense of security and happiness. In this project, I want to find a way to afford the children sense of security and happiness which was belong to them.
While two tribes are having war, children are always helpless.
They need a refuge to get safty.
SECURITY

Strangers' gaze will reduce children’s sense of security. On the other hand, getting the attention from their companions or teachers means safe to the children because they are being watched.

Using walls to block the strange sight from outside while keeping inside open and free.
Several walls can form spaces
A ROTATABLE WALL
Combining a spindle and walls, we find a rotatable wall. It can block the sight from the strangers. Moreover, children can interact with the wall, while they are playing with this wall, they can create a secure space as they need.
Local Ause walls to protect their own territory and gain safety.

According to the history of West Complex, it was once a hybrid building which serve as both medical college and hospital. The mutual promotion of these two functions inspired me to create a community that encourages different groups of people, including the elders, the faculty, the students and the tourists, to communicate and exchange with each other, promoting each other in life quality. The proposal of the collective housing applies in urban scale, building scale and unit scale. At the urban scale, a free plan was created on the site to attract tourists and citizens from the corner, the lawn, and the medical college to walk around, bringing energy to the site. At the building scale, different groups of people are distributed to different levels of the building, according to their life style and their needs of quietness. A series of social condensers are implanted into the building to provide a place for the three groups of people to interact, connecting them vertically. Different furniture is placed at the corridors and to provide a family-like environment for the residents, encouraging them to occupy the public space and therefore interact with others. At the unit scale, several units are designed for different groups of people from student to married couple to retired man and woman. The combine combination of form, program and public spaces, emphasizes walkability, interaction and exchanging in the community that improve the harmony and life quality.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN DEVELOPMENT
Though analysing the plan of Peter Zumthor's Vals Therme, I founed that the free circulation is derived from the decentralized layout. So, I try to take advantage of Zumthor's free plan and adapt it to the site, creating a free plan on the ground for tourists and citizens from the corner.
BUILDING SCALE TO CONNECT DIFFERENT CROWDS
TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN1:500 At the building scale, different groups of people are distributed to different levels of the building, according to their life style and their needs of quietness. Several social condensers with various programs- gym, reading room, health care and daycare are implanted into the building to provide a place for the three groups of people to interact, connecting them vertically. Horizontally many residential boxes with units inside are placed on each floor engendering continous corridors and many public spaces. Different furniture is placed at the corridor and to make a family-like environment for the residents, encouraging them to occupy the public space and therefore interact with others.

UNIT SCALE
TO MEET DIFFERENT NEEDS AND MAKE FULL USE OF SPACE
At the unit scale, several units are designed for different groups of people from student to married couple to retired man and woman. Considering the sustainability of living in this building, the arrangement of units is accommodative for the change of family structure. People can move to a new apartment if members of the family changes without being far away from their acquainted old neighbors. So that people can create new relationship without giving up the old one.

This acient building is in Liangjia village, Luoding, Guangdong. The main building is a old-style private school and there's a watchtower next to it. The roof is fabricated by mission roofing tile( 阴阳瓦 )。 Because black brick is good for heat dissipation and durable while loam brick is low –radiation, most of the walls of the building are fabricated by black bricks outside and loam brick inside( 金包银 ), saving material and being beneficial to people’s health. The eave columns are bricks inside and plastered on the surface, seeming like stelae. These columns are sophisticated made by ancient craftsmen and durable after hundreds of years. The construction of the roof is special. There are two layers of roof, the first layer is original, and due to the rainy weather in in southern China, a second layer is added to keep out rainwater. To better know the construction of this ancient building. After the survey, with the instruction of my teacher, i used computer modeling to rebuild the building based on the existing drawings and the knowledge learn form Chinese architectural history course. i have learn far more than what i read form the textbook.
