The bear cat room is designed and located within the Bear Electric Appliance company. The client requested a relaxing area for employees to enjoy spending time with cats during their breaks. The main concept involves creating a warm atmosphere for both workers and cats. Therefore, materials such as timber and concrete were chosen to fit within the budget. Careful consideration was given to eliminate sharp edges, gaps, and openings to accommodate the cats' living style. Specific construction techniques were utilized to prevent maintenance issues, such as fur getting stuck inside openings, and to ensure the safety of the cats.

Throughout the construction process, my responsibilities included designing and project managing to ensure the precision and quality of the materials selection and structure. CAT VESPER STRUCTURE

The design and construction of the cat vesper structure is a crucial aspect of this project, prioritizing efficiency and safety for both cats and visitors. Careful consideration of width and height is essential to accommodate both parties. The vesper structure for the cats has been designed to cater to both feline and human needs, creating a comfortable space for workers to sit and interact with the cats at a comfortable distance.

03 - DELVING INTO SHADOWS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Master Studio E, University of Melbourne Semester 2, 2023

Individual Work

Studio Leader: Lauren Crockett & Tope Adesina & Nicolas Braun & Arjuna Benson

The project captures the essence of a chosen shadow puppetry performance, aiming on creating a harmonious and immersive space that uses light, shadow, and thoughtful design to engage with its purpose and surroundings.

The project embodies the essence of shadow puppetry, creating an immersive space using light and shadow to engage with its surroundings. Inspired by this art form, it weaves a narrative of light and shadow, connecting with the environment and people.

By using projection mechanisms, it establishes a visual connection with nature. Each program benefits from a unique approach to light treatment, harmonizing with its intended purpose and the surrounding environment.

The art gallery's display features openings with transparent materials to allow solar light to filter in. Therefore, by installing the shadow puppet within the material display, the performance is controlled by the climate, so the position and angle will shift continuously. As a result, the performance is controlled by nature and creates interesting results despite the weather.

WORKSHOP

The moveable panels in the workshop provide a dynamic setting for the shadow puppets, allowing for a changeable display based on the movement of the panels. Once the artisan finishes their work, the moveable panels open up the space, offering visitors a glimpse inside the workshop. The concept aims to establish a visual link between private and public spaces, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with the craftspeople. It transforms into a performance showcasing the puppet creation process.

04 - LEVEING PLUS PUB+

Master Thesis, University of Melbourne Semester 1, 2024

Individual Work Studio Leader: Emilio Fuscaldo

Many international students in Australia experience dissatisfaction with their educational journey due to a lack of understanding of the host country's educational system and culture. A traditional pub used to be a place for social gatherings at the heart of the community, but international students chose not to use it.

This inner-city suburb condenses a large group of international students. Which considering lacking of activity and demanding more interactive accomodation. Acknowledging the historical value of pubs as a 'third place' that provides a homely and safe environment for travellers to engage in cultural exchange and participate with local communities, international students are part of this cohort.

Therefore, this thesis explores the potential of pubs to bring together international students in Carlton, proposing a plan to transform pubs into inclusive spaces for students to engage with the local community and prepare for their academic journey. Specific methods, such as personalized display opportunities and placemaking strategies, will be recommended to foster creativity and community connectivity.

1.Extrude the massing

3.Creating voids to allow solar access

5.Demolish and generate access on groud floor

According to research of the surrounding context, the vision is to create a walkway that promotes physical connectivity and serves as a stage for placemaking initiatives, fostering community engagement and participation. Hence, connecting University Square and Lincoln Square along Leicester Place will activate the quiet zone into a social gathering platform.

Therefore, it will create an opportunity for international students to engage with the local community and activate the quiet zone identified in the on-site observation analysis.

Meanwhile, the placemaking program can be expanded to student accommodation and allow access to people from the public. As a result, it creates a greater opportunity for international students to exchange with the community in Carlton while providing individual privacy.

This approach promises to intensify and activate activity by creating a walkway adapted to placemaking programs between existing parks to evoke participation between public and private.

MOMENTS PLAN

This project proposed a design scheme of multi-level, adaptable student accommodations that further reflects a commitment to inclusivity and personalization, addressing both practical and social needs. The design approach would refer to Steven Holl's hinged space apartment device mechanisms and incorporate Koolhaas's concept of the void to create vertical and horizontal connections. The idea is to create more engagement between international students so that they can self-customize their spaces to meet their requirements.

Meanwhile, to continue with the idea of a moveable mechanism, I have incorporated the moveable façade panels as part of the decoration. Whereas users can move the panels to create visual connection with the surrounding context and climate.

Here I want to demonstrate how the room can be arranged in different scenarios using axonometric drawings to showcase the customization of spaces and two renders to illustrate visual effects and connections.

05 - SACCAH RUM BAR

PASSIVE & AGGRESSIVE

Master Thesis, University of Melbourne Semester 1, 2023

Individual Work

Studio Leader: Katie Skillington & Jim Stewart & Eve Li

Visitors have the opportunity to experience the production process of how rum is made. This idea is reflected in the design concept, which aims to create a connection with the rum production process. The concept draws inspiration from the production of rum, where the entire process conveys a sense of transitioning from heavy to light.

It starts with extracting the essence of sugarcane, goes through a distilling process, and ends with the production of a transparent liquid. This transformation from heavy to light is reflected in the architecture through the form, program, and materials. The form evolves from a solid enclosed shape to framing systems with openings, and the program follows a similar progression from heavy to light, mirroring the rum production process.

The chosen produce its rum, a popular beverage in Australia, because it emits only 1.42 kg CO2e per bottle, significantly lower than the industry average of 2.97 kg CO2e per bottle.

The design concept committed to reducing carbon emissions by using one of the most ecological production processes available. Therefore, by using sugarcane as the raw material (less carbon emission effect) for rum production, and here is the 6-step production process.

Extrude the massing

Divide the space into two parts programs and generate entrance

Demolish the edges to open the entrances and set back due to regulation

Manipulate the form into three layers with a hierarchy rhythm

The drawings emphasize the interplay between heaviness and lightness, as the gradual reduction in wall thickness transitions into a framing system with openings. Furthermore, the section below illustrates how lighting is influenced by both form and material, thereby enhancing the concept of weight and lightness.

In this studio, we prioritize environmental sustainability through our ESD strategies. I've implemented a system for recycling and reusing materials within our production process. By repurposing most of the waste from rum production into fertilizer for plant growth and integrating a greywater system, we're making significant strides in sustainability. Additionally, the installation of solar panels on the roof is reducing our electricity consumption.

06 - APPLIED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

MEDIUM RISE OFFICE

Core Construction Subject, University of Melbourne Semester 1, 2023

Individual Work

Studio Leader: Anthony Olivera Blazquez

This proposed design I am developing a design for a high-rise mixed-use tower, featuring a hotel, working office, and sky lobby. This project showcases a deep understanding of construction components, meticulously depicted in drawings.

My focus lies in designing the office facade and its components. The detailed drawings highlight the connections and layouts of the facade, suspended floor, and ceilings.
